ACM's 21st North American Computer Chess Championship (NACCC) was held in conjunction with the ACM/IEEE Supercomputing Conference from November 11 to 14, 1990 at New York Hilton, New York, United_States, the same place as 20 years before the first ACM 1970 took place.

For the first time, a sudden death time control of 120 minutes per side and game was incorporated, affecting the outcome of the tournament, which emerged with Deep Thought and Mephisto as co-champions with 4 points. Newcomers were Nightmare by Reinhold Gellner and Gaby von Rekowski, and Now by Mark Lefler. Another newcomer, Zerker by James Testa of the UC Berkeley was not able to get up and running at the tournament site and left an odd field [1] . However, Zerker won the battle for best pre-tournament hype, as it reported 7,000,000 moves per second, roughly three times faster than Deep Thought [2] .
