		1K ZX Chess, a chess program for the Sinclair ZX81, written in 1982 by David Horne in Z80 Assembly with a code size of 672 bytes, including the user interface, as published with listing in Your Computer, February 1983 ^[1] . 1K ZX Chess was commercially market by the author himself ^[2], and soon by Artic Computing ^[3] ^[4] , a software development company set up by Richard Turner ^[5] and Chris Thornton ^[6] , a chess programmer himself, and author of Spectrum Chess ^[7] , which competed at the European MCC 1982 and 1983, and Turbo Chess for the ZX Spectrum ^[8] . 1K ZX Chess was further released by Sinclair Research in 1982 ^[9] . The program could only play white starting either with 1.e4 or 1.d4. Castling, promotions and en passant were not implemented, while a version for the unexpanded 2K Timex Sinclair 1000 includes these moves ^[10] .

8080 Chess, a chess program by Robert Arnstein for S-100 bus microcomputers, consisted of the pins of the Intel 8080 run out onto the backplane. It was commercially marketed in the 70s by Processor Technology Corporation. The 8080 Chess manual is still available online. 8080 Chess was the first microcomputer to participate in an ACM North American Computer Chess Championship, the ACM 1977 ^[1]. It further played the Second West Coast Computer Faire Microcomputer Chess Tournament in March 1978 ^[2].

		Abyss, a Chinese Chess program by Chun Ye and Tony Marsland, written in C under Unix aka SunOS. A X Window GUI was written in C++ by Haiying Wang ^[1]. The program was subject of Chun Ye's 1992 master thesis at University of Alberta ^[2] on the topic of selectivity and extension heuristics in the domain of Chinese Chess. Not only Ye's advisor, Tony Marsland, contributed to the development of the program, but also Don Beal - at that time visiting professor at University of Alberta - in particular concerning null move quiescence search. Abyss participated at all three Computer Olympiads which took place in Maastricht, winning the gold medal (shared) at the 3rd Computer Olympiad, 1991, while the 1999 version played in 2001 and 2002, respectively.

Abyss' ICGA Tournaments

Description

The framework of Abyss ^[4] was based on the Western experimental Chess program Parabelle by Fred Popowich and Tony Marsland ^[5].

Move Generation

Abyss' board is represented as Mailbox - a one-dimensional array of 90 computer words, indexed by 0 .. 89. Pieces are encoded by ±1 for red and black pawns until ±7 for red and black kings, empty squares are represented by zero. To detect the edges of the board and palace during move generation, board arrays of pre-computed 12-bit direction masks consisting of four groups for each orthogonal direction of 3 bits each are utilized. Only the empty intersection of the move direction with the mask of the target square indicates target on board or inside palace, followed by piece specific tests to generate pseudo legal moves or to continue a direction loop for rook or cannon. Detection of strictly legal moves, i.e. it does not expose the own king in check, or does not oppose both kings on the same file with no pieces intervening, is delayed until the move is actually made for efficiency reasons - since not all generated pseudo legal moves are examined.

Search

The search procedure of Abyss was subject of Chun Ye's thesis concerning selectivity, in particular extensions which are combined in various experiments, and further elaborated in two additional papers along with Tony Marsland ^[6] ^[7]. Abyss already featured recursive null move pruning with depth reduction of 1 ^[8], and further Don Beal's null move quiescence search ^[9]. A piece evading move extension was motivated by threat detection concerning the complicated repetition rules of Chinese Chess.

		Achilles, a parallel chess system by Vladan Vučković based on his Axon 3 engine. In July 2007, at the Faculty of Electronic Engineering, University of Niš, Achilles won a four game match versus Grandmaster Igor Miladinović with 3½ - ½, running on a cluster of 12 AMD x64, 1.8 GHz with an own written UDP cluster chess operating system. Game was two hours per side ^[1] . Đorđe Vidanović was responsible for the opening book ^[2] .

		Acornsoft Chess, (Chess) a commercial chess program for the BBC Micro, Model B and Acorn Electron written by Arthur Norman and Nick Pelling in 6502 assembly ^[1], and released in 1982 and 1983 respectively by Acornsoft. Chess recognizes all legal chess moves, including castling, en passant, queening, and minor promotions. The program uses pure coordinates for game notation and entering moves, allows to manually set up positions ^[2], and it features 10 levels of play.

		AdaChess, an Italian chess engine released under the GPL license, written in Ada by Alessandro Iavicoli ^[1] . The development started in early 2012 and the first version has been released on January 21, 2013. Full compliant to the rules of chess, it also recognize draws by insufficient material. AdaChess is a console application without own GUI, but supports the Chess Engine Communication Protocol aka WinBoard/XBoard protocol. Latest version is tagged 2.0 and has been released in August 2014. AdaChess played the IGT 2014, IGT 2015, and IGT 2016 over the board.

		Adam, a chess engine by Dominique Longbien, written in C++, and first released in June 2002 as WinBoard engine ^[1]. Adam 3.3, released in March 2011, is compatible with UCI only. Adam was active over the board from 2002 until 2006 in participating several French Computer Chess Championship and French Programmers Tournaments. At the FCCC 2003, running in a Pentiom 3, 1.3 GHz, Adam searched about 250 KNPS ^[2].

Advance,
a chess system by Mike Johnson and Dave Wilson, based on a home constructed and built hardware with bit slice technology, controlled by a general purpose microprocessor, until version 3.0 a 6502, the Advance 68k in 1986 had the 16-bit 68000. The bit slice technique allowed Advance to utilize bitboards ^[1], along with sliding piece attack and move generation.

Tournaments

Advance had its debut at the WMCCC 1980 in London ^[2], mentioned as Mike 3, the name of Mike Johnson's older program, and a few weeks later officially as Advance 1.0 at the WCCC 1980 in Linz. Due to its technology the micro computer status was disputed ^[3], but it was allowed to play the European Microcomputer Chess Championships.

Advance 2.0 was runner up behind Cyrus at the European MCC 1981, Advance 2.4 and Advance 3.0 won the European MCC 1982 ^[4] and European MCC 1983 respectively. Advance 2.4 further played the ACM 1982, Advance 3.0 the WCCC 1983 in New York, and Advance 68K the WCCC 1986 in Cologne ^[5].

AI Chess, (A.I. Chess)
was Marty Hirsch's first chess program and predecessor of MChess. AI Chess played the ACM 1988, the WCCC 1989 and the WMCCC 1989 ^[1].

Description

given in the WCCC 1989 booklet ^[2] :

A.I. Chess uses a fairly complicated algorithm combining full-width search, selective search, and a "layered" quiscence search which behaves differently at different levels in the search tree. The program performs an iterative full-width search using a modified form of the Principal-Variation-Search (PVS) algorithm. On top of this, it does a combined selective/quiscence analysis. A.I. Chess has the unusual feature of sometimes re-searching a "quiscence node" with a full-width investigation.

The quiscence search incorporates a detailed "threat analysis" and therefore, the program spots may combinations long before a contrasting "brute force" approach would find them. The gain (from needing less full-width plies) seems to exceed the loss in speed by a significant amount.

Position evaluation starts by considering if the side to move is threatened with pawn promotion, check, or double attack, or has trapped, pinned, or skewered pieces. Penalties similar to swap-off scores are imposed if the position is too deep to merit a re-search. Scores are then added for other tactical patterns, pressure on pieces and pawns, development, King safety, passed pawns, pawn structure, outposts, and mobility.

Some types of endgame positions are scored differently, by pattern recognition processing. The program is alert to simplifications, and to tactics involving passed pawns.

		AICE, a free Chess Engine Communication Protocol and UCI compliant chess engine, written by Anastasios Milikas in C++ using the Standard Template Library, with Windows and Linux binaries available ^[1]. AICE is an Arena partner engine ^[2], and able to play Chess960, participated at the two open Livingston Chess960 Computer World Championships, the Chess960CWC 2005 and the Chess960CWC 2006.

Etymology

AICE stands for Artificially Intelligent Chess Engine, as explained by Anastasios, who also remarked "This is probably not a good name, since the engine is not intelligent! But I am working on it…” ^[4]. Anastasios initial intention with AICE was to use neural networks and genetic algorithms in order to optimize its evaluation weights, but he found that this was not productive and suitable for a chess evaluation function. They might be useful in time management, or controlling extentions or reductions ^[5].

Features

AICE is a bitboard based PV searcher with adaptive null move pruning in none PV-Nodes, using SEE, history- and killer heuristic to improve move ordering, and fractional extensions and non recursive reductions based on evaluation and history. In version 0.73, fail-high reductions were implemented in addition to null move pruning, but removed in in 0.97. Beside the transposition table and a smaller hash table for the quiescence search, AICE maintains a pawn hash table to cache once calculated pawn structure related data.

		Alaric, (TerraPi) a WinBoard and UCI compliant chess engine written by Peter Fendrich in C++. It uses both bitboards and other structures to represent the board and to generate moves, and further utilizes transposition table, pawn hash table, history tables, and two killer slots per ply. Inside its principal variation search with null move pruning, a precise prediction of node types takes place in order to guide the search ^[1].

Etymology

The chess engine Alaric is named after Alaric I (around 370 – 410 AD), King of the Visigoths from 395, who managed to walk with his forces right through the Roman empire, invaded Italy and sacked Rome in 410. Before that in the year 394 he served as a leader of Germanic troops under Roman command of Theodosius I but wasn't happy with how the Goths were treated ^[3].

Tournament Play

Alaric played the CCT9 with a result of 3½/7, and, under the handle TerraPi, a successful WCRCC 2007, becoming 6th with 8½/14 ^[4]. One year later, at the WCRCC 2008, Alaric even became 4th with 9½/14 ^[5]. Alaric's opening book was cooked by Günther Simon ^[6].

Mike Parker's program, Albatross, which finished the Tournament with one and a half points - much to its author's delight - turned out to be vulnerable to spectators. Someone took a flashlight photo rather too close to it and the Nascom 1, on which the Albatross was running, promptly had a seizure. This prompted cries of 'Don't shoot the Albatross' for the next seven rounds whenever anyone with a camera appeared on the scene.

		Aldebaran, a WinBoard compliant chess program written by Mauro Scarpa in C ^[1] , first released in April 2001 ^[2]. Aldebaran's aim was testing some automated tuning of the evaluation, and learning ^[3], and otherwise uses the common iterative deepening, quiescence search,and move ordering with PV and history heuristic ^[4]. Aldebaran played the CIPS 2001 and CIPS 2002 Italian Computer Chess Championships.

		Alder, an early chess program by Peter Kouwenhoven. In 1978, Alder ran on a PDP-11/45 of the Leiden University to play a small match versus IGM via telephone ^[1].

Alexs,
a chess program by Alex van Tiggelen, apparently an application of ALEXS (Automatically Learning EXpert System), a neural network approach with a learning efficiency beyond of genetic learning, as elaborated and demonstrated by Van Tiggelen and Van den Herik at Advances in Computer Chess 6 in the domain of specific endgames, in particular the endgame of two knights versus h-pawn ^[1], and by Van Tiggelen casted to the middlegame ^[2].

Alexs played the DOCCC 1996 and the DOCCC 1998, according to Vincent Diepeveen ^[3] ^[4] it was based on the Dutch Nightmare by Joost Buijs, with an automatically tuned evaluation in 1996, but manually tuned parameters in 1998. A time-served version of Alexs was commercially available through Gambit-Soft from 1999 ^[5].
