Chester,
a private chess engine written by Steve Timson. Chester is a solid tactical program, applying singular extensions restricted to fairly near-root nodes disjoint from recapture extensions[1] . Inspired by comments Bruce Moreland made at CCT3, if a (significantly) reduced depth search of the moves at a node reveal that only one move produced a score near alpha and the rest are all worse, then extend it. Steve further worked on positional knowledge during the development and mentioned Chester does not have any special bad bishop code beyond mobility[2] . Chester played a strong CCT3 with 4½/8 and CCT4 with 6/11.
