was an American chess player, early computer chess promoter, and in 1977 editor of the two issues of the
Computer Chess Newsletter
. It was kind of forerunner and model of the
ICCA Newsletter
and Journal

, and was continued in the Computer Chess column of the
Personal Computing
magazine in April 1978. In March 1978, the
first competition exclusively for microcomputers
was held at the Second
West Coast Computer Faire
,
San Jose, California
- a suggestion of
David Levy
which was implemented thanks to Douglas Penrod
[2]
[3]
. Douglas Penrod died from cancer in November 1978. In early 1979,
The Penrod Memorial Microchess Tournament
was held, won by
Chess Challenger 10
