Ed Trice,
an American electrical engineer, entrepreneur, chess and checkers player and programmer. He is inventor of the 10x8 chess variantGothic Chess, which is similar to Capablanca Chess by adding an Archbishop and Chancellor[1] but has a different starting position. In 2002, Ed Trice obtained U.S. Patent #6,481,716 for Gothic Chess [2]. Already in the mid 80s, Ed Trice developed the chess program The Sniper[3] which had a USCF rating of 2129 in January of 1990 [4]. Along with Gil Dodgen in the late 90s, he co-authored the checkers program World Championship Checkers[5] which includes a 7-piece endgame database solved using the Distance To Win Metric for 19 billion positions, and an 8-piece database solved for Win-Loss-Draw data for 440 billion positions [6]. The 8-piece database was further used to verify Chinook's endgame databases [7]. His Gothic Vortex Gothic Chess playing program won the 2004 [8] and 2007 Gothic Chess Computer World Championships[9] .
