Hans-Walter Schmitt,
a German corporate consultant, chess player, chess and Chess960 promoter, chair of the Chess Tigers e.V., a chess development association [1], and organizer of the Chess Classic tournaments in Frankfurt (1994-2000) and Mainz (2001-2010). Schmitt acquired sponsors and won Jens Beutel, mayor of Mainz, as patron of the Chess Classic.

The Chess Classics focused on rapid chess, incorporated the human rapid Chess960 world championships since 2001, and the Livingston Chess960 Computer World Championship from 2005 until 2009.
