He completed a DPhil in 1998 at the University of Ulster at Jordanstown with the thesis A Neural Network Based Search Heuristic and its Application to Computer Chess[1] . He introduced the related Chessmaps heuristic, which is applied in his ChessMaps chess playing program, written in C#[2] . Kieran Greer holds a patent of a Chess variant with mined squares [3] .
