was a German computer scientist at Technical University of Munich, chess player, member of the German chess problem association Die Schwalbe [2] and computer chess researcher and programmer. Along with Siegfried Jahn, he was co-author of the chess programs Daja, which already played the first German computer chess tournament, the First GI Computer Chess Tournament, 1975 in Dortmund [3] , and author of the chess program Elsa [4] [5] , which competed at the 2nd WCCC 1977 in Toronto. In cooperation with Thomas Ströhlein, Ludwig Zagler researched on three and four piece chess endgames and did a complete retrograde analysis to construct endgame databases of KRK and KRKB [6] .
