		AICE, a free Chess Engine Communication Protocol and UCI compliant chess engine, written by Anastasios Milikas in C++ using the Standard Template Library, with Windows and Linux binaries available ^[1]. AICE is an Arena partner engine ^[2], and able to play Chess960, participated at the two open Livingston Chess960 Computer World Championships, the Chess960CWC 2005 and the Chess960CWC 2006.

Etymology

AICE stands for Artificially Intelligent Chess Engine, as explained by Anastasios, who also remarked "This is probably not a good name, since the engine is not intelligent! But I am working on it…” ^[4]. Anastasios initial intention with AICE was to use neural networks and genetic algorithms in order to optimize its evaluation weights, but he found that this was not productive and suitable for a chess evaluation function. They might be useful in time management, or controlling extentions or reductions ^[5].

Features

AICE is a bitboard based PV searcher with adaptive null move pruning in none PV-Nodes, using SEE, history- and killer heuristic to improve move ordering, and fractional extensions and non recursive reductions based on evaluation and history. In version 0.73, fail-high reductions were implemented in addition to null move pruning, but removed in in 0.97. Beside the transposition table and a smaller hash table for the quiescence search, AICE maintains a pawn hash table to cache once calculated pawn structure related data.

		Anaconda, a Chessbase compliant chess engine by Frank Schneider and Kai Skibbe and a successor of their GromitChess program, written in C++ with a 0x88 board representation, an improved evaluation and time-management, and some new search heuristics, which allow it to search deeper but more selective. GromitChess was renamed to Anaconda in 2003 to prevent copyright infringements with Wallace and Gromit by Aardman Animations ^[1] . The new name also devotes the positional playing style of the program, to slowly restrict its opponent mobility. Anaconda played the IPCCC 2003, IPCCC 2004, and IPCCC 2005, and as Chess960 compliant engine, the second Livingston Chess960 Computer World Championship.

		Ant, a WinBoard compatible chess engine by Tom Vijlbrief, written in C++, at times supported by Hans Secelle ^[1] and Albrecht Heeffer. Ant regularly participates at Dutch Open Computer Chess Championships and International CSVN Tournaments and had its debut at the DOCCC 1995. It further played the Aegon 1996 and Aegon 1997 human machine tournaments, the IPCCC 1998, and the Livingston Chess960 Computer World Championships in 2005 and 2006.

		Betsy, a WinBoard compatible chess engine written by Landon W. Rabern in C with a little Assembly, first released in September 2000 ^[1]. Originally written in Pascal with its own text interface it was rewritten in C using rotated bitboards. Betsy applies PVS with null move pruning, and various standard and some aggressive non-standard extensions and reductions. According to the Arena site, Betsy was the first published chess engine able to play Chess960, and is therefor Arena partner engine ^[2].

		Carballo, an open source chess engine by Alberto Alonso Ruibal, written in Java, licensed under the GNU General Public License, and first released in 2009 ^[1]. Carballo supports the UCI protocol, and a HTML5 based GUI dubbed Mobialia Chess ^[2], developed by Lukas Laag with the Google Web Toolkit (GWT) using the Vectomatic SVG library ^[3] ^[4]. Carballo features pondering, a PolyGlot opening book, and since version 1.2, Chess960.

Board Representation

Carballo is a bitboard engine and applies magic bitboards to determine sliding piece attacks. Staged move generation along with move ordering is controlled by an iterator object which gets the next move during search, and uses legal move generation. This is so far implemented by making and testing whether pseudo-legal moves leave the own king in check.

Search

The search performs alpha-beta PVS inside the iterative deepening loop with aspiration windows, utilizing a transposition table also in quiescence, verified and indexed by Zobrist Keys. Selectivity considers the wide range of state of the art techniques.

The evaluation is designed to plug in various evaluaton functions. Available are a simplified evaluation function, a sophisticated, complete evaluation function, an experimental one, and some dynamic for specialized endgames, such as a KPK bitbases ^[8]. Most important features are listed below.

Cheng,
an UCI compliant open source chess engine by Martin Sedlak, written in C++ as exercise in generic programming, first released as Cheng3 in April 2011. Cheng is able to play Chess960, target platforms are Windows, Linux, Mac OS and Android systems ^[1]. Cheng4 0.38, released in January 2015, is available at GitHub under the permissive zlib license ^[2].

Description

Cheng ^[3] is a bitboard engine using fancy magic bitboards to determine sliding piece attacks. It applies staged move generation.

Search

The parallel multi-threaded search performs PVS alpha-beta with a shared transposition table inside a fractional ply iterative deepening framework with aspiration windows, featuring Lazy SMP ^[4]. Search routines are instantiated at compile time from a generic routine with three boolean template parameters, PV-node, in check, and null move pruning on-off, similar quiescence search has four instances for on-off combinations of PV-node and check. Further selectivity is applied by mate distance pruning, razoring, IID, futility pruning, check extensions and late move reductions. Move ordering is improved by the killer- and history heuristic.

Evaluation

Evaluation employs three further hash tables - evaluation hash table, material hash table and pawn hash table. The evaluation function determines hardware population count support at compile time, passed as template parameter to internal eval functions, finally adding a tempo bonus. Pawn and piece specific evaluators are further implemented with a color template, considering pawn structure, mobility, king safety and various piece pattern. Most of the gain in Cheng4 0.38, released in January 2015, is due to eval tuning using the Texel's Tuning Method by Peter Österlund ^[5].

		ChessV, an open source engine that plays over 50 chess variants with various board sizes as well as orthodox chess, written by Gregory Strong in C++, released under the GPL v2, first published in 2004 ^[1]. ChessV 0.95 was released in November 2016 ^[2]. ChessV runs under Windows with 32-bit and 64-bit executables available and can run on Linux under Wine. It features an own GUI, but includes also an executable named ChessV_Winboard.exe which allows running ChessV under Winboard. ChessV 2.0, released in March 2017, completely rewritten from scratch ^[3] in C#, is a .NET Framework application, and can run on non-Windows operating systems, such as Linux, using Mono.

Board Representation

ChessV encapsulates the board, position and game related data inside a huge C++ class, with number of files, ranks and squares as member, and specifies a bitboard type accordant to its size, either with 64, 96 or 128 bits. Sliding pieces attacks are generated with rotated bitboards.

		Chiron, a strong commercial chess engine by Ubaldo Andrea Farina, supporting both the Chess Engine Communication Protocol and UCI, the Polyglot and CTG ^[1] opening book formats, various endgame tablebase and bitbase formats, and able to play Chess960. The development started in 2002 and it has been under continuous development, underwent a major rewrite in 2009 using bitboards, and has been commercially released in October 2011 ^[2] . Chiron applies parallel search on multiprocessor systems, and has implemented pawn blockage detection function ^[3] ^[4], improved to detect blockages not only in pawn endgame but also when there are a few pieces on the board ^[5] ^[6] ^[7].

Further Versions

Chiron 2

Chiron 2, released in December 2013 is about 40 Elo points stronger than Chiron 1.5 thanks to improvements in both search and evaluation ^[9].

Chiron 3

The next major release in May 2016, Chiron 3, is about 60 Elo stronger than 2, due to further search and evaluation enhancements and tuning, and also supports Syzygy Bases and is able to probe of 6-men Scorpio Bitbases ^[10].

Chiron 4

On January 10, 2017, Chiron 4 was released, again a considerable improvement of about 70 Elo over its predecessor, Chiron 4 improved in a further tuned evaluation, specially considering passed pawns and mobility, and various search enhacements, such as better forward pruning, Lazy SMP and NUMA awareness ^[11].

Tournament Play

Chiron played various Italian Computer Chess Championships, was best Italian entry at the CCC 2009 and the IOCSC 2010 ^[12] respectively, and further won the IGWT 2013, IGWT 2014 and IGWT III online, and the IGT 2016 and IGT 2017 over the board. Chiron played the WCCC 2006 in Turin, the IPCCC 2006, and four CCT Tournaments, winning the CCT14 in 2012 ^[13]

		Critter, an UCI compatible cross-platform chess engine by Richard Vida, executables freely available for personal use to run under Windows, Linux, Android and Mac OS ^[1] . Starting in late 2008, Critter was first written in Object Pascal compiled with Delphi, now available as open source engine ^[2] ^[3] , and was ported to C / C++ in 2009 ^[4] . It consistently evolved through various board representations from 0x88 to bitboards, as acknowledged by Richard Vida, also incorporating ideas from strong open source programs like Ippolit ^[5] , to a world class engine which achieved top five of most engine rating lists ^[6] .In 2012, Critter had its over the board debut at the ICT 2012, where it became strong runner-up behind the Rybka cluster.

Description

Critter applies a principal variation search with aspiration windows, null move pruning ^[8] and other state of the art forward pruning, reduction and extension techniques, such as the Botvinnik-Markoff extensions ^[9] . It can search in parallel with up to eight threads ^[10] , supports Gaviota tablebases ^[11] , and is able to play Chess960 ^[12] . Critter features a tapered eval with a score pair class and overloaded operators ^[13] ^[14] , and blockage detection in late endgames ^[15] .

DanaSah,
a Chess Engine Communication Protocol, and since version 6.1 UCI compatible open source chess engine by Pedro Castro, written in C, and first released in January 2005 ^[1]. DanaSah's name is related to Dana of Daniela and Sah, which means chess in Romanian ^[2]. Since DanaSah 6.1 in May 2016, chess960 is supported, available as Windows, Linux and Android binary.

Over the board, DanaSah played the WCCC 2009 blitz tournament in Pamplona, Spain ^[4], and won the 4th Chess Computer Cup in Carugate, Italy the same year, and further played the IOCSC 2010 and IOCSC 2012 Italian Open Chess Software Cups, the latter in the original category.

		Daydreamer, (DayDreamer) an UCI compliant open source chess engine by Aaron Becker, written in C (C99) with Windows, Linux, and Mac OS binaries available ^[1], also able to play Chess960. Developed since early 2009, the program was named Daydreamer after a bug in an early version caused it to occasionally follow up very strong play with bizarre blunders, as though it had lost its focus on the game and its mind was wandering aimlessly ^[2]. First released in August 2009 ^[3], it initially used Tomasz Michniewski's simplified evaluation function ^[4], while subsequent versions were rapidly improving since mid 2010. DayDreamer played the CCT12 and ACCA 2010 online tournaments.

Description

Board Representation

Daydreamer uses piece-lists and a 16x16 vector attacks board around a 0x88 board inside its middle 16x8 slots ^[6]. Move generation of pieces is unrolled over directions, capture generation of sliding pieces for quiescence uses the leading efficient blocker loop, i.e. for one vertical direction ^[7]:

Search

The search is PVS alpha-beta with transposition table, IID, null move pruning combined with mate threat extensions, razoring, futility pruning and late move reductions inside an iterative deepening framework with aspiration windows and floating point fractional ply depth, the latter credited to Ivan Bonkin and his Bison program ^[8] ^[9].

Opening Book

Daydreamer supports PolyGlot and ctg opening books ^[10], the huffman codes and ctg move decoding based on Stephan Vermeire's ctg code for Brutus ^[11].

Endgame Tablebases

Daydreamer is able to probe Gaviota Tablebases as well as Scorpio Bitbases ^[12].

Evaluation

Daydreamer's evaluation might be lazy with respect to bounds and margins based on cached material, considering imbalances, and piece-square table scores only. Otherwise, supported by a pawn hash table, it takes pawn structure, mobility, king safety and various other terms into account, speculatively aggregating middle- and endgame scores, which were finally tapered by a range of 24 game phases.

Deep Sjeng,
a private and former commercial chess engine by Gian-Carlo Pascutto, which emerged in 2002 from the 12.7 closed source branch of the chess variant and chess playing open source engine Sjeng ^[1] . Opposed to other commercial engines with the surename "deep" to indicate the version is able to play on multiple processors and sold for almost the double price than their "none deep" counterparts, Deep Sjeng, albeit able to play on multiple cores as well, is the native engine name for single as well as multiple processors.

Deep Sjeng was market since 2003 by Lex Loep's company Lokasoft ^[2] . It came with the ChessPartner graphical interface and supports UCI and the Chess Engine Communication Protocol. Version 2.X with the Mayura Chess Board ^[3] and its third incarnation Deep Sjeng 3.x were distributed via Gian-Carlo's own site, but Deep Sjeng is no longer for sale ^[4] .

Deep Sjeng further played various Dutch Open Computer Chess Championships, International CSVN Tournaments, Livingston Chess960 Computer World Championships, dominated The Chess Programmers Tournament with three wins so far from four editions, and won the Italian IOCSC 2010. Online Deep Sjeng played multiple CCT Tournaments, where Deep Sjeng won the CCT12 in 2010 and CCT13 in 2011. Since 2008, Deep Sjeng participated the ACCA World Computer Rapid Chess Championship always with top rankings, winning the WCRCC 2012.

I started out with ABDADA (described in ICCA journal article and used in Amy), which got me a speedup of +- 1.2. I went on to try PVS (Crafty 15.0 and described in several articles about parallel search) which got me a speedup of 1.2-1.3.

1.3 wasn't enough, so I 'bit the bullent' and started looking at DTS (Cray Blitz). Unfortunately, DTS is both hideously complicated and requires a nonrecursive search and a p2p design. I spent some time working on a variant of DTS that can work with a recursive search function and a master-slave design and that is what I am using now. It still needs a lot of test work, but current results indicate a speedup of about 1.6.

Automated Learning

In 2007, Gian-Carlo's experimental program Stoofvlees aka Deep Sjeng 2.7 ^[9] with a set of feature recognizers coupled to a neural network ^[10], had its evaluation function entirely automatically learned from "watching" Grandmaster games. The results were incorporated into Deep Sjeng 3.0 ^[11]. The engine has noticeably improved in strength, particularly in the areas where it was less optimal before.

		Fire, (Firebird, Fire xTreme) an UCI compliant chess engine by Norman Schmidt ^[1], until version 3.0 derived from IvanHoe and the Ippolit series of programs with some help of Milos Stanisavljevic. Initially called Firebird, and later renamed to Fire due to a trademark naming conflict ^[2], it was released as open source, Fire licensed under the GNU GPL. The sources were later closed with Windows executables available for download for recent Intel processors ^[3]. Fire features magic bitboards, it can be configured with more than 70 UCI options, and applies a SMP parallel search.
Fire ^[4]

Fire 4

Fire 4, released in December 2014, was a compete re-write and does not use any source code from or related to Ippolit. It supports Syzygy Bases ^[5] ^[6], and includes a revamped memory management which uses OpenMP #pragmas to utilize thread local storage ^[7] and minimize the amount of 'shared' resources among threads for its SMP implementation. Testing was done via massive parallel, automated 24/7 ultra-fast chess engine matches using Cutechess-cli and LittleBlitzer. Code changes were tested to a very high level of confidence using LOS and SPRT (min. 40,000 games) against a pool of top engines. Development and testing included approx. 200,000 - 240,000 ultra-fast games per day ^[8].

Fire 5, Fire 6.1

Fire 5, released in November 2016, improved with new evaluation terms, and SPSA tuned evaluation and search parameters, and supports Chess960. Fire 6.1, released in September 2017, added approximately 30-40 Elo in playing strength ^[9].

Frenzee,
a Chess Engine Communication Protocol compatible chess engine capable to play Chess960, written by Sune Fischer in C++, and first released in January 2002 ^[1]. UCI is supported for analyze mode. Frenzee is a bitboard engine gaining from 64-bit compile. Deep Frenzee applies a parallel search sharing the transposition table along with PVS and null move pruning, has its own book learning technique, and is able to probe Nalimov tablebases ^[2].

Frenzee play five consecutive CCT Tournaments, starting with CCT5 in January 2003, and two strong ACCA World Computer Rapid Chess Championships, the WCRCC 2007 and WCRCC 2008.

Fridolin,
an UCI and Winboard compliant open source chess engine written by Christian Sommerfeld in C++. Fridolin had its over the board debut 2010 in Kanazawa, where it played the WCCC 2010 and WCSC 2010 supported by book author Erdogan Günes, and further played the DOCCC 2010, running on four cores ^[1]. Fridolin 2.0, ready to play the WCCC 2015 in Leiden, was released in June 2015 along with the former private Kanazawa version Fridolin 1.0 ^[2].

Etymology

Fridolin is a male given name, particularly in the German-speaking countries, and diminutive form of Friedrich (Fredrik, Frederick), from the Old High German Fridu meaning "peace" and Rîhhi meaning "ruler" or "power". During the German occupation of France 1940-1944 in World War II, many French called the Germans "Fridolin" ^[3] ^[4]. Fridolin is not only the name of Christian's engine, but also the name of his son ^[5].

		Galjoen, an open source chess program by Werner Taelemans, written in C++11 and distributed under the GNU General Public License, first released in February 2015 ^[1]. Galjoen comes with an own GUI build on gtkmm3, but can also ran as pure engine using the Chess Engine Communication Protocol or UCI. Galjoen 0.35, released in March 2017 is able to play Chess960 ^[2].
