		Dabbaba, a chess playing program written from May 1995 to Nov. 1998 by Jens Bæk Nielsen in Turbo C to run on PC's under DOS in graphics mode ^[1], also able to play chess variants like Knightmate Chess ^[2], Shatranj and many others ^[3]. During its iterative search ^[4] ^[5], maintaining a ply stack of irreversible aspects of the position, that is castling rights, en passant target, halfmove clock, and hash-keys, it updates its mailbox board and piece-lists incrementally during make and unmake move. A feature of Dabbaba is that it starts its search by using up to 20% of the allotted time for a move using a mate search at depth zero, following long sequences of checks to see if it results in a mate, material gain or perhaps a saving draw. To avoid a search explosion, Dabbaba considers ply-distance to the root and number of replies so that shallow lines are searched deeper than wide lines ^[6]. In May 2008, Jim Ablett released a WinBoard version of Dabbaba ^[7], and in August 2012 the original author ^[8].

Etymology

The Dabbaba (or dabaaba, dabbabah) is a Fairy chess piece that jumps two squares orthogonally, leaping over intermediate pieces like a knight, also called (2,0)-leaper. The Arabic word dabbāba formerly meant a type of medieval siege engine, and nowadays an army tank.

		Jabba, (JabbaChess, Jabba Chess) a Chess Engine Communication Protocol and UCI compliant open source chess engine written by Richard Allbert in C++, able to run under Windows, Linux and Mac OS. Jabba's development started around 2009 as successor of Richard's former engine Lime. In 2012, Jabba was ported to C# ^[1] ^[2]. Jabba 1.0 is able to play Knightmate Chess.

Description

Jabba uses a hybrid board representation of a 0x88 mailbox and bitboards for pawns ^[4]. It applies PVS alpha-beta with transposition table inside an iterative deepening framework along with null move pruning. It extends checks, pawn moves to the 7th rank, and transitions to pawn endings. Jabba's evaluation might be lazy and considers material imbalances based on material analyses using statistics, mobility, pawn structure, king safety and various piece terms.

Jabba played the CPT 2010 and CPT 2011 Chess Programmers Tournaments over the board, further the WCRCC 2010 and WCRCC 2012 ACCA World Computer Rapid Chess Championships, and the CCT12, CCT13, CCT14 and CCT15 Computer Chess Tournaments.

Description

Board Representation

Despite boards exceeding 64 squares, like 10x8, 12x8, and 10x10, Sjaak is a native bitboard engine, utilizing either GCC's __int128 ^[6] extenstion on 64-bit platforms such as x86-64 or 128 bit vectors of integers on 32-bit platforms, the latter supporting SSE2 if available. Sjaak applies Kindergarten Bitboards to determine sliding piece attacks ^[7].

Search

Sjaak uses a fail-soft alpha-beta principal variation search with quiescence, null move pruning, late move reductions and check extensions inside an iterative deepening framework with transposition table ^[8]. Move ordering considers the killer, countermove and history heuristics. A modified version of a SEE routine from Jazz is used to evaluate captures .

Evaluation

Sjaak's static evaluation takes material balance, static piece-square tables derived from heuristics based on how pieces move, mobility and king safety into account, the latter only in chess variants with one king per side ^[9].
