		Ananse, a chess program by Walter Bannerman, which played various World Microcomputer Chess Championships, International Paderborn Computer Chess Championships and four consecutive Aegon Tournaments from 1993 to 1996. While Ananse did quite well against humans, in computer tournaments it often suffered from bugs, also due to premature, not well enough tested program changes between rounds, once even running Ananse under a debugger with breakpoints enabled (WMCCC 1995). Competing programmers, who seemed obligated to win with their programs, often got nervous when Ananse played a good book line and opening, for instance during the WMCCC 1996 in Jakarta, Frans Morsch in the game of Ananse versus Fritz. Ananse 5 is the current version for sale ^[1] with its own graphical user interface.

Description

given in 1997 from the ICGA site ^[3] :

200K code, 62K data. Basic alpha-beta search with several special routines providing a 'human touch'. Plays very much like a human player, even in the middle game. Search depth : 6 to 15 ply. No hash tables.

Best tournament results : 2 and a half points at Aegon 1993 and 2 points at Aegon 1994, plus several misses in Jakarta '96 (due to bugs) and a good game against Fritz 4. The current version is the best ever. Many improvements with the help of participants in Geneva the last 2 human tournaments in Geneva, where Ananse was the only participating program.

		Ant, a WinBoard compatible chess engine by Tom Vijlbrief, written in C++, at times supported by Hans Secelle ^[1] and Albrecht Heeffer. Ant regularly participates at Dutch Open Computer Chess Championships and International CSVN Tournaments and had its debut at the DOCCC 1995. It further played the Aegon 1996 and Aegon 1997 human machine tournaments, the IPCCC 1998, and the Livingston Chess960 Computer World Championships in 2005 and 2006.

		Arachne, an experimental chess program by Maarten van der Meulen and chess testbed of his research on search algorithms, like Alpha-Beta, and the best-first algorithms SSS, Conspiracy number and Proof-number search, including parallel Conspiracy number search ^[1] for instance in 1988 on a 10-processor system ^[2], and evaluation ^[3]. In his ICCA Journal paper ^[4] , Maarten van der Meulen mentions experiments with cn-search as published in 1988 by David McAllester ^[5] in Arachne not encouraging ^[6] , and introduced a new variation dubbed applied cn-search* ^[7]. Arachne played six consecutive Dutch Computer Chess Championships from 1985 until 1990.

		Belzebub, a WinBoard compliant open source chess engine written by Radosław Kamowski in Java, released in May 2002 as free chess game for mobile phones ^[1] ^[2]. Belzebub played the first and second Polish Computer Chess Championship. After finishing last at the PCCC 2002, Belzebub became runner-up of the uniform category at the PCCC 2003 behind Tytan.
Beelzebub ^[3]

Etymology

Belzebub is the Polish diction of Beelzebub or Baalzebûb, Arabic: بعل الذباب‎, Ba‘al az-Zubab, literally "Lord of the Flies", a Semitic deity that was worshiped in the Philistine city of Ekron. In later Christian and Biblical sources, Beelzebub is referred to as another name for Devil ^[4] ^[5] ^[6]. In Christian demonology, classified by Peter Binsfeld in Tractatus de confessionibus maleficorum & Sagarum an et quanta fides iis adhibenda sit, 1589 ^[7], Beelzebub is one of the seven Princes of Hell ^[8] associated with gluttony, one of the seven deadly sins. Gluttony also occurs in chess ^[9] or even more in computer chess with basically material based evaluation, i.e. grabbing unimportant pawns with the queen, ignoring development and king safety.

Description

Search

Belzebub uses plain 8x8 board arrays, and applies alpha-beta with null move pruning inside an iterative deepening framework with aspiration windows. Move ordering considers the principal variation from previous iteration maintained in a triangular PV-table, MVV-LVA for captures and killer- and history heuristic otherwise.

Repetitions

Like TSCP, Belzebub uses following algorithm to detect repetitions, credited to John Stanback, originated from SCP and his GNU Chess versions ^[10]. However, it may detect false repetitions in case of exchanging two unequal pieces ^[11]. Further, the routine keeps the garbage collector busy by allocating the integer array each call, even if the fifty move counter is less or equal three.

		Buzz, a Chess Engine Communication Protocol compliant chess engine written by Pradu Kannan in C++. An early version is available as open source engine under the GPL ^[1], intended to be an example program for new chess programmers. Buzz is a bitboard engine and applies Pradu Kannan's main stream implementation of Magic Bitboards with individual table sizes for each square, later dubbed Fancy Magic Bitboards, the generator is available as open source from the Buzz site. Buzz got a 2.2 x speedup from 32-bits to 64-bits on Core2 ^[2]. It uses a kind of principal variation search, dubbed Node-Type Search (NTS), explicitly considering node types ^[3], and utilizes multiple threads for a parallel search. In collaboration with Andres Valverde and Fonzy Bluemers, Buzz' search was incorporated into the team effort Dirty.

So far, Buzz played the first three ACCA Americas' Computer Chess Championships, the ACCA 2006, ACCA 2007, and ACCA 2008, the first two ACCA World Computer Rapid Chess Championships, WCRCC 2007 and WCRCC 2008, as well the CCT9.

		FireFly, an UCI compliant chess engine by Andrew Fan, first released in May 2004. FireFly is written in C, apparently uses an own 32-bit implementation of single line Magic Bitboards aka Kindergarten Bitboards ^[1], is able to probe Nalimov Tablebases, and performs a parallel search, version 2.6 playing the TCEC Season 5.

		Gunda-1, a Crafty clone developed by a team of the Gunadarma University, Depok and Jakarta, Indonesia, led by Suryadi Harmanto ^[1] ^[2]. Gunda-1 based on Crafty 9.31 was allowed to play the WMCCC 1996 at Gunadarma along with the "original" Crafty, as a concession of the ICCA to let the host participate with an own program. At the WMCCC players meeting it was agreed that Crafty had to play Gunda-1 in the first round as proposed by tournament director Jaap van den Herik, to avoid possible later issues if it turned out, both programs may fight for the title. Also no other program had to play both. Gunda-1, operated by Dede Liu and Andi Suhendra, won the game from Crafty and finally both programs finished 4th (Crafty) and 5th.

Wishes came true

Excerpt from Ratih Dewanti's tournament report, ICCA Journal, December 1996 ^[4]

Gunadarma University vividly wished not only to take part as a sponsor in the 14th World Microcomputer Chess Tournament, but also as a participant. At first, this seemed an audacious wish, since programming a computer-chess system from scratch requires a great deal of effort. Due to our contacts with the ICCA we were referred to the program CRAFTY (especially to Bob Hyatt). The Gunadarma University was enthusiastic about the possibility that their wish could be fulfilled. So they formed a group of eight persons working on an own chess program based on CRAFTY. The group, called Gunadarma University Expert Team, was led by Professor Suryadi Harmanto, the other members being Haryanto, M. Shofwan A, Avinanta Tarigan, Adang Suhendra, Adrian, Tubagus Maulana, and Windiaprana. The team worked six months on the program.

The specifications of GUNDA-1 are as follows. It is written in ANSI C and Assembly Language, and has been tested and run well in LINUX Slackware version 3.0. In order to improve the execution speed, the kernel of the LINUX operating system has been optimized for the Pentium processor.

In the 14th WMCC, GUNDA-1 used a Pentium Pro 200, and was operated by Dede Liu and Andi Suhendra. GUNDA-1 received a wildcard from the ICCA for participating in the tournament. We were very happy with it and especially with the result. GUNDA-1 finished fifth (tied fourth with its "origin" CRAFTY represented by Tom Crain). A remarkable contest was in the first round when GUNDA-1 played CRAFTY (as was agreed upon beforehand) and won ... its first game in a World Championship. Still, after the tournament we know that there are many things to do to improve the program.

There is no token that can adequately express the International Chess Community's appreciation for the host University, Gunadarma. While one can recognize the founder, Professor Suryadi Harmanto's love of chess and wisdom in building an institution whose programs are bound so tightly with the importance of Information Technology, one can only be impressed by his courage in taking on the challenge of revising the GUNDA-1 chess program to give it local character, while risking all in a competition like this one. The computer-chess community is delighted to accept him into its ranks as a programmer and, hopefully, as a long-time continuing participant in ICCA events. The world needs more risk takers with such vision.

Robert Hyatt

Bob Hyatt 1996 in Jakarta information on the first WMCCC round ^[7]:

There are two Crafty programs there, mine, and 9.31 entered by the Indonesians. This is something that seems wrong to me and I'll take it up with the ICCA later, as this was discussed at length and I thought it was clear that Crafty is Crafty, period. Makes little sense to have two...

The actual Gunda story was pretty fractured at times. Here is what actually happened.

The 1996 event was in Jakarta, being hosted by the university there. The CS chair (perhaps, I am not certain on this) asked David if they could enter a modified Crafty as a participant. David asked me and I replied "Sure. I was going to participate, but if they are interested, that works for me." And I left it at that. But each time the new participant list was published, no "Gunda-1" entry. I sent David/Tony an email and they replied "we have not received an entry from them, do you want to enter yourself?" And I replied yes. I filled out the application, GM Roman Dzhindi had a friend that volunteered to operate AND buy us a pentium-pro box to use. He also bought the airline ticket and set up his room reservation at his own cost. Then at the last minute along came Gunda-1. Now there was a quandary, in that our guy had already bought a non-refundable airline ticket, booked a room, had sent the pentium pro to me to install linux, + crafty, plus 3-4-5 piece endgame tables, and then I had FedEx'ed it on to Jakarta. David promptly contacted me for advice. He did not want to refuse them entry since they were hosting the event, he did not want to exclude the real Crafty after the expenses we had spent, so I suggested they discuss it at the player's meeting, which they did. No one raised an objection after hearing the explanation, and the only stipulation the players wanted was to request that Gunda-1 and Crafty NOT be paired against each other unless it was absolutely unavoidable, for obvious reasons.

It was a silly mistake, but not one anyone would have been very likely to predict, so we made the best of it. Funny thing was the two programs tied for places 4-5, which was not expected. Crafty could certainly have won that event with a little luck, but you would not normally expect both to finish at the same position.

This was also the event where the newly seen "Ruy Lopez - crafty variation" first showed up. I can tell more about that if anyone is interested.

Jaap van den Herik

Jaap van den Herik on Gunda-1 in Augmented Ideas, Editorial ICCA Journal, March 1997 ^[9] , where he was misinformed about Rajah by Valavan Manohararajah ^[10] and later apologized ^[11] :

In the 14th WMCC (Jakarta, 1996), the Indonesian program GUNDA-1 participated, and in the 16th Open Dutch Computer-Chess Championship (Leiden, 1996) the program RAJAH was entered. Both programs were based on Hyatt's world-wide available code of the program CRAFTY. Since both teams gave due credit to CRAFTY as their original source, it is comparable to using ideas from articles while giving appropriate reference. Nevertheless, the question remains to what extent can we prolong the similarity of publications and programs. For articles, we do not allow plagiarism. For algorithms and programs I believe we are in a state of flux. Yet, the researcher who is the originator of the ideas should always be given pride of place.

		La Dame Blanche, a WinBoard compliant chess engine written by Marc-Philippe Huget in C ^[1]. La Dame Blanche played two French Computer Chess Championships, the FCCC 1997 and FCCC 1998, and was first released in January 1999 ^[2]. La Dame Blanche applies Alpha-Beta with killer heuristic, and uses rotated bitboards to determine sliding piece attacks. Marc-Philippe dedicated his program to Alan Turing and Mikhail Botvinnik, who inspired him to write a chess program, and further used GNU Chess and EXchess for his first ideas ^[3]. Along with La Dame Blanche, Marc-Philippe realized a Book Builder as open source program, to convert a PGN file into an opening book ^[4].

		Monarch, (Monarch Chess) an UCI compatible, free chess engine written in C by Steve Maughan. Monarch's board is internally represented as an array (Version 1.0 used bitboards and a pre-generated move table), performs PVS with checks searched at the first ply of the quiescence, in conjunction with SEE, killer and history heuristic, null move pruning with R = 3, ETC and IID, and the evaluation is based on piece square tables ^[1] .

		Queen, a WinBoard and UCI compliant chess program with an own GUI written in C++ by Leen Ammeraal, first released in April 2000 ^[1], the WinBoard version in January 2001 ^[2]. At least earlier versions of Queen used NegaScout utilizing a transposition table storing both lower and upper bound scores with separate drafts but only one best move ^[3].

		Scorpio, a sophisticated open source chess engine by Daniel Shawul, written in C++ and compliant to the Chess Engine Communication Protocol with builds running under Windows and Linux. Scorpio participated at the CCT9, CCT11 and CCT12 online tournaments, and played the ICT 2007 over the board. It is base of Daniel's general game playing engine Nebiyu, able to play Chess variants, Checkers, Reversi, Go and Amazons ^[1]. Scorpio 2.7.9, released in December 2017, optionally features a Monte-Carlo Tree Search ^[2].

Description

Board Representation

Scorpio combines Bitboards with a 0x88 board representation, and the coordinate transformation in scanning bits along with the lookup of the De Bruijn multiplication. The "unique" 64-bit routine was generated with the help of the De Bruijn Sequence Generator passing Daniel's birth date ^[4] . Magic bitboard implementation by Pradu Kannan ^[5] . Distributed Search

Scorpio performs a distributed search ^[6] ^[7] around an iterative depth-first search framework ^[8] :

Scorpio uses a decentralized approach (p2p) where neither memory nor jobs are centralized. Each host could have multiple processors in which case shared memory search (centralized search with threads) will be used. One processor per node will be started by mpirun, then each process at each node will create enough threads to engage all its processors.

		SEE, (SEEChess, Decapod) a WinBoard compliant chess engine written by Tor Lattimore in C++, which started in about March 2003. After some trials with MTD(f) ^[1], SEE applies a PVS based alpha-beta with transposition table, null move pruning, killer- and history heuristic, and generates moves with a 0x88 board and pawn attack tables.

SEE had its debut at the NC3 2003 Australasian National Computer Chess Championship, under the name Decapod ^[3]. It further played, the NC3 2004, NC3 2005 and NC3 2006, still referred as Decapod in the entry lists ^[4], and the CCT6 and CCT7 CCT Tournaments in 2004 and 2005.

		Smaug, a chess engine by Joona Kiiski which was a slightly modified version of Glaurung 2.2 by Tord Romstad, announced in March 2009 ^[1]. Smaugh's patches were soon incorporated into another Glaurung derivative by Marco Costalba dubbed Stockfish ^[2] . Along with some emotional forum discussions on derivatives ^[3], Joona Kiiski became co-author of Stockfish, and Smaug 2.2.1. the one and only public release ^[4].

		SpiderChess, a chess engine by Martin Giepmans written in Delphi, initially with an own GUI ^[1] and later Chess Engine Communication Protocol compatible to run under WinBoard. SpiderChess played the WMCCC 2001 (as SpiderGirl) and the WCCC 2002, and various Dutch Open Computer Chess Championships, International CSVN Tournaments, and the CCT6. 		Titan, (Socrates II) a chess engine by Don Dailey and Larry Kaufman affiliated with Julio Kaplan's Heuristic Software, and like its predecessor Heuristic Alpha also written in C and never commercially released under its original name. Titan, intern also dubbed Mini, was a kind of experimental development version and testbed of new ideas for the optimized x86 assembly Socrates versions. Titan won the ACM 1993 on a 486 PC, leaving Cray Blitz, Tech and BHitech behind, but was "traded" for Socrates II ^[1] , soon sold to Electronic Arts for their game AI of the mass-market entry Kasparov's Gambit. Titan influenced the commercial Socrates 3.0, which was released in 1993 not by Heuristic Software, but through a company called MDI ^[2] , and further started a academic career thanks to MIT connections yielding to *Socrates.

		Wasp, John Stanback's new UCI compliant chess engine and complete rewrite of Zarkov, first released short after June solstice 2016, announced ^[1] and hosted by Frank Quisinsky ^[2]. 		Zappa, a world class UCI compliant chess program developed by Anthony Cozzie. Zappa won the WCCC 2005 in Reykjavík ^[1] , and after the Rybka disqualification in 2011 the WCCC 2007 in Amsterdam, the DOCCC 2005 and CCT7.During the World Chess Championship 2007 in Mexico City, September 2007, Zappa played a match versus Rybka and scored 5.5 / 10 to win the match ^[2] ^[3] ^[4] . Zappa's book authors for different events were Arturo Ochoa (CCT7) and Erdogan Günes ^[5] .

Genealogy

Zappa is not directly named for Frank Zappa, but from a scene from Austin Powers 2, where Dr. Evil's base in the moon is divided in two units: Moon Unit Alpha and Moon Unit Zappa - the latter being the name of Frank Zappa's daughter, Moon Unit Zappa ^[11] .

Strictly Commercial

Immediately after the successful WCCC 2005, there were plans to commercialize Zappa. First attempts with Vincent Diepeveen involved failed ^[12] . In April 2006 ^[13] , a commercial version dubbed Zap!Chess running under the Fritz GUI was released by ChessBase ^[14] . The version which played the Rybka match, Zappa Mexico, is distributed by Stefan Meyer-Kahlen ^[15] .

Program Internals

Board Representation

Zappa utilizes bitboards and uses rotated bitboards to generate sliding attacks on the fly. Anthony once experimented with incremental updated attack tables, which was a win on 32-bit systems ^[19] .

Hash Collisions

Excerpt from The Effect of Hash Signature Collisions in a Chess Program, that is Crafty and Zappa ^[20] :

Both programs are traditional computer chess programs that use the alpha/beta algorithm to search a minimax game tree. The search is done in three distinct phases.

Phase 1 is the normal full-width search that is done to some fixed depth as limited by the total time allowed for a move. This fixed-depth search is modified by various search extensions.

Phase 2 is an add-on search done after the basic search has reached a satisfactory depth. Phase 2 only considers captures in Crafty, while Zappa also includes some checking moves.

Phase 3 is the static evaluation, which takes the current position after phase 2 has completed, and computes a numerical score based on the material, the locations of the pieces, pawn structure, and many other positional considerations. In Crafty/Zappa, all of the hashing is done in phase1 of the search, there is no hashing in the quiescence search.

Singular Extensions

Zap!Chess, the commercial ChessBase version, has an implementation of Singular Extensions, the famous Deep Blue search algorithm. They are disabled by default, but they increase the tactical strength of the program at the cost of positional strength ^[21] .

Parallel Search

Zappa was designed to run on multiple processors and massive parallel systems using shared memory and threads and has an efficient parallel search ^[22] . Zappa Mexico can be used on Windows or Linux computers with up to 512 CPU cores.

100% Finished

In March 2008 Anthony Cozzie announced that "the Zappa project is 100% finished", which includes both tournaments and future releases ^[23] .

Rondo

In 2010, Zach Wegner started to work with Anthony Cozzie, who, still in computer chess retirement, has given control for further development of his massive parallel program, now called Rondo, to Zach ^[24] ^[25] .
