		Aldebaran, a WinBoard compliant chess program written by Mauro Scarpa in C ^[1] , first released in April 2001 ^[2]. Aldebaran's aim was testing some automated tuning of the evaluation, and learning ^[3], and otherwise uses the common iterative deepening, quiescence search,and move ordering with PV and history heuristic ^[4]. Aldebaran played the CIPS 2001 and CIPS 2002 Italian Computer Chess Championships.

Anechka, (Анечка, Anya)
an UCI compliant chess engine by Sergei Nefedov, written in Delphi. The program was developed incrementally, starting with board representation, generation, make and unmake move, alpha-beta search, and rudimentary evaluation, published in 2003, further improving in subsequent versions. Version 0.05 disabled checks in quiescence search and had a slightly modified evaluation function, yielding in a significant increase in playing strength on short time controls ^[1]. Latest version is Anechka 0.08, released in July 2006 ^[2]. This version played the CCCCISC 2008 in Moscow with 3½/7, and the IOPCCC 2008 in Łódź.

		Aristarch, a chess engine by Stefan Zipproth, compliant to the Chess Engine Communication Protocol as well as the Universal Chess Interface, running under Windows. The development of Aristarch already started in 1995 and was first written in Basic, version 2 was mainly a C port, but version 3 was a complete rewrite in C++, using a strictly object oriented design, utilizing bitboards to represent the board, and apparently rotated bitboards to generate sliding piece attacks. Version 4.0 includes several improvements, the most important being a completely new pawn evaluation routine ^[1], it otherwise has a rather speculative king safety evaluation. Beside commonly known search extensions and reductions, Version 4.21 introduced an original pruning method based on 8 simple conditions ^[2]. Aristarch played the CCT4 and CCT5 online tournaments.

Etymology

The name of the engine has its origin in the ancient Greek astronomer and mathematician Aristarchus of Samos (310 BCE - ca. 230 BCE) ^[4], who presented the first known model of Heliocentrism that placed the Sun at the center of the known universe with the Earth revolving around it. He calculated the sizes of the Sun and Moon, as well as their distances from the Earth in terms of Earth's radius.

*		Asterisk, an UCI and WinBoard ^[1] compliant chess program written by Péter Horváth in C. Its development started in early 2002 ^[2], already released in March 2002 ^[3]. Asterisk is presumably the Windows successor of Péter's earlier MS-DOS program Robin. Since 2002, Asterisk played all six Hungarian Chessprogram Open, and was tied first at MASPV 2007, and runner-up at the MASPV 2008.

Etymology

Asterisk, from Late Latin asteriscus, from Ancient Greek ἀστερίσκος (asteriskos, “a little star, asterisk, used in manuscripts to mark passages”), diminutive of ἀστήρ (aster, “a star”) ^[4] . In computer science, the asterisk is commonly used as a wildcard character, or to denote pointers, repetition, or multiplication ^[5]. Inside the Portable Game Notation Standard, an asterisk character ("*") is a token by itself. It is used as one of the possible game termination markers. It indicates an incomplete game or a game with an unknown or otherwise unavailable result ^[6] .

Astro 64,
the first Romanian chess program, written by Viorel Darie for the Felix C-256 mainframe computer at the Computer Institute of Bucharest ^[1], developed in about two years starting from 1976. Astro 64 searched about 10,000 positions per minute (166 nps) on the Felix C-256, and played a public match of one move per week in 1978/79 against the readers of a Romanian newspaper, also published in Personal Computing ^[2] .

		Atlas, an early chess program written in 1967 by Alex Bell at Atlas Computer Laboratory, Chilton. It was basically a resurrected, cleaned up Algol version of Bell's and Barricelli's old program from the early 60s to test evolutionary theories, which had an evaluation function based purely on mobility - at that time the first fully legal chess program to run in England ^[1], and likely also the base of Barricelli's WCCC 1974 entry Freedom. Atlas, running on an ICL Atlas computer ^[2], looked three plies ahead with alpha-beta, and would accept almost any captures in that depth with weighting on swaps of the more powerful pieces, i.e. it would always swap a queen for a queen. If no captures were present it prepared to castle or mini-maximised its mobility. A slight modification prevented it from moving its queen in the first 5 moves ^[3]. Atlas played a few sparring games against Lancaster ^[4], John Scott's program, then dubbed "Scott" ^[5], and largely suffered from horizon effect.

Move Generation

A description of Atlas' move generation techniques along with a mate-in-two solver is given with Algol source code listing in Games Playing with Computers, 3.1 Chess ^[7]. Atlas uses two distinct 8x8 boards [1:65] and piece lists [O:16] for white and black man with identical piece coding, passing the boards per reference as 'mymanin' or 'opponents' dependent on side to move. Pre-calculated rook and bishop tables contain one vector of direction increments, i.e. east (+1), west (-1), north (+8), and south (-8) for rooks, and further for each square a vector of ray-direction terminal destination squares. The embedded routine 'rookorbishopmove' in scope of the outer move generation routine loops over all four directions, gets increment and terminal target square from the rook or bishop table, and iterates the destination along the ray. Inside the ray-loop it tests whether the target is occupied by an own man, to terminate the ray-loop, otherwise it stores the move, and then tests to break after a capture or even an illegal king capture with an extra exit 'cutoff'.

Master

In the early 70s, Atlas evolved to Master in collaboration with Peter Kent, and later with John Birmingham and chess expert John Waldron, while Alex Bell finally left Chilton.

		Atlas, an UCI compliant chess engine by Andrés Manzanares Campillo written in C++, with executables running under Linux and Windows. The development of Atlas started in 2004, initially representing the board as 0x88 vector attacks mailbox along with piece-lists, supporting WinBoard, and written in C. Atlas 2.90 was a complete rewrite released in June 2011, a bitboard approach only supporting UCI ^[1].

		Chiron, a strong commercial chess engine by Ubaldo Andrea Farina, supporting both the Chess Engine Communication Protocol and UCI, the Polyglot and CTG ^[1] opening book formats, various endgame tablebase and bitbase formats, and able to play Chess960. The development started in 2002 and it has been under continuous development, underwent a major rewrite in 2009 using bitboards, and has been commercially released in October 2011 ^[2] . Chiron applies parallel search on multiprocessor systems, and has implemented pawn blockage detection function ^[3] ^[4], improved to detect blockages not only in pawn endgame but also when there are a few pieces on the board ^[5] ^[6] ^[7].

Further Versions

Chiron 2

Chiron 2, released in December 2013 is about 40 Elo points stronger than Chiron 1.5 thanks to improvements in both search and evaluation ^[9].

Chiron 3

The next major release in May 2016, Chiron 3, is about 60 Elo stronger than 2, due to further search and evaluation enhancements and tuning, and also supports Syzygy Bases and is able to probe of 6-men Scorpio Bitbases ^[10].

Chiron 4

On January 10, 2017, Chiron 4 was released, again a considerable improvement of about 70 Elo over its predecessor, Chiron 4 improved in a further tuned evaluation, specially considering passed pawns and mobility, and various search enhacements, such as better forward pruning, Lazy SMP and NUMA awareness ^[11].

Tournament Play

Chiron played various Italian Computer Chess Championships, was best Italian entry at the CCC 2009 and the IOCSC 2010 ^[12] respectively, and further won the IGWT 2013, IGWT 2014 and IGWT III online, and the IGT 2016 and IGT 2017 over the board. Chiron played the WCCC 2006 in Turin, the IPCCC 2006, and four CCT Tournaments, winning the CCT14 in 2012 ^[13]

		Constellation (Nickname Connie), a dedicated chess computer with a 8-bit 6502 CPU and 16 KB ROM and 2 KB RAM, manufactured and market in 1983 by Novag, running a program developed by primary author David Kittinger, supported by chess master Scott McDonald. It was the forerunner of the mighty Super Constellation, and participated along with its big brother at the WMCCC 1983 in Budapest.

The Novag Constellation programs represent a significant evolutionary step in the development of microcomputer chess programs. The program represents the first commercial implementation of the attack map / offset map move generating strategy proposed by former World Chess Champion Mikhail Botvinnik and subsequently refined by myself for faster move generation as pieces come off the board.

A second departure from other commercial programs has been the simplification of the evaluation function as applied to the end nodes of the tree search. The programs instead rely heavily on specific chess knowledge which is concentrated into a special preprocessor which interfaces to the tree search primarily through the scores associated with specific ply-one moves. This idea of a ply-one move preprocessor was originally implemented in the program Tech by James Gillogly in the late 1960's. Although Tech only achieved a high 1400 rating running on a large computer, the strategy has certain appeal. First, chess tree searching has become very efficient, and second, the interaction problems associated with putting ever increasing amounts of chess knowledge in the tree become formidable. It has become apparent to that this rather simple approach might contain the structure of a master level microcomputer program.

		Crux, a chess engine written by László Szalai in Delphi. It runs under Windows either in console mode or with an own GUI, and as first Hungarian WinBoard program ^[1] and also supports the Chess Engine Communication Protocol. The search is plain alpha-beta improved by null move pruning and the killer heuristic. Crux played the ICT 2001 and various Hungarian Chessprogram Open, where it won the MASPV 2002. Crux' opening book is edited by Pandix book author Csaba Szûts ^[2].

		CXG Star Chess, a dedicated chess computer with integrated travel sensory pegboard and a Motorola 6800 compatible Newcrest 6301V 8-bit controller including 4 Kibi ROM and 256 Byte RAM, produced and released by Newcrest Technology in 1985 as successor of the CXG Computachess III which had the Hitachi 6800 on board. Like the Computachess III, the CXG Star Chess program was based on Kaare Danielsen's first program, LogiChess. The same program was also inside the CXG Enterprise S ^[1], also sold by Hegener & Glaser as Mephisto Merlin 4K ^[2]. This 6800 LogiChess branch was still in production in the 2000s, as used in all the Lexibook computers ^[3] with 68HC08 compatible microcontrollers ^[4] ^[5] ^[6].

The 1986 successor, CXG Advanced Star Chess had the more powerful Newcrest 6301Y controller with 16 Kibi ROM, and 2.25 Kibi RAM, and was already based on Kaare Danielsen's new program Enterprise, related to the CXG Super Enterprise ^[8], the CXG Sphinx Titan, and the CXG Super Crown ^[9], also marketed in 1987 by Hegener & Glaser as Mephisto Merlin 16K ^[10].

Oracle

In his 1996 ICCA Journal paper on CHE, Chrilly Donninger mentions Kaare Danielsen as inventor of the pre-processing Oracle approach for his program CXG Advanced Star Chess ^[12]. However, there was also the famous Pre Scan Heuristics by David Kittinger as implemented in Super Constellation, and the whole idea was originally implemented in the program Tech by James Gillogly in the late 1960s ^[13].

		Dark Horse, an early chess program witten by Ulf Rathsman in Fortran, running on a CDC 6600 mainframe computer ^[1], and later on a 36-bit one's complement UNIVAC 1100 ^[2]. Dark Horse played the WCCC 1977 in Toronto, the WCCC 1980 in Linz, and was runner-up at the ECCC 1979 ^[3].

		Equinox, a former private and as of September 30, 2014 and version 3.20 ^[1], free UCI compliant SMP chess engine by primary author Giancarlo Delli Colli, at times supported by Stefano Rocchi et al.. As noted by Giancarlo Delli Colli, the progress of Equinox is the result of years of hard work by the authors - and "of course, like everybody else does", taking ideas from open source engines like Crafty, Stockfish, Ippolit, and others, from the Chess Programming Wiki and the ICGA Journal ^[2] .

Tournament Play

After the Lion disaccord at the WCCC 2006 in Turin, Giancarlo was welcomed back to the ICGA in 2009, to play with the then original Equinox the WCCC 2009 and the open hardware 14th Computer Olympiad 2009 ^[4] in Pamplona, supported by opening book author Harry Schnapp. During the Italian Festival della Scienza Futuro ^[5] , Genoa at November 01, 2009, Equinox drew from WGM Elena Sedina, and won versus GM Igor Efimov ^[6] ^[7] . It further participated at Italian Open Chess Software Cups, the IOCSC 2010, the IOCSC 2011, where it won ahead of Chiron, and the "free" group of the IOCSC 2012, where Equinox became runner-up behind Vitruvius. The "free" group includes both derivative engines and engines whose teams do not accept examinations accordant to the current regulation of the G 6 for original engines ^[8] ^[9] . Equinox further is active in various private engine tournaments, such as the Thoresen Chess Engines Competition ^[10] .

		Green Light Chess, (Green Light, GLChess ^[1]) a WinBoard compliant chess engine written by Tim Foden in C++, version 2.09 relying on an own win32 GUI ^[2]. Green Light started its life in early 1997 as 0x88 engine, and since version 2.xx evolved to bitboards with 8x8 board. It applies Alpha-Beta inside an iterative deepening framework with fractional ply extensions, transposition table, null move reductions, razoring, and pruning in quiescence search based on SEE. In version 2.14, TD-λ learning was implemented which required milli-pawn values rather than centi-pawn values. The well maintained 2.18 change log gives a decent overview of features, modifications and bugfixes within the engine development, its GUI and WinBoard implementations ^[3]. Green Light Chess felt well in the green-light flooded cave in Graz and played a strong WCCC 2003 with a respectable fifth place and 6 points out of 11, and further played the CCT6 with 5½ out of 9.
