		Aristarch, a chess engine by Stefan Zipproth, compliant to the Chess Engine Communication Protocol as well as the Universal Chess Interface, running under Windows. The development of Aristarch already started in 1995 and was first written in Basic, version 2 was mainly a C port, but version 3 was a complete rewrite in C++, using a strictly object oriented design, utilizing bitboards to represent the board, and apparently rotated bitboards to generate sliding piece attacks. Version 4.0 includes several improvements, the most important being a completely new pawn evaluation routine ^[1], it otherwise has a rather speculative king safety evaluation. Beside commonly known search extensions and reductions, Version 4.21 introduced an original pruning method based on 8 simple conditions ^[2]. Aristarch played the CCT4 and CCT5 online tournaments.

Etymology

The name of the engine has its origin in the ancient Greek astronomer and mathematician Aristarchus of Samos (310 BCE - ca. 230 BCE) ^[4], who presented the first known model of Heliocentrism that placed the Sun at the center of the known universe with the Earth revolving around it. He calculated the sizes of the Sun and Moon, as well as their distances from the Earth in terms of Earth's radius.

Bionic, (Believe it or not it's checkmate)
a chess program written in Basic by Hans Secelle during the early 90s. Bionic participated at four Dutch Open Computer Chess Championships, 1994, 1995, 1996 and 1997, and three Aegon Tournaments, 1995, 1996 and 1997. While Bionic was a slow searcher, it was an attempt of a knowledgeable program.

Bionic Impakt

Bionic's C-successor Bionic Impakt, which played the DOCCC 1998, was based on Crafty ^[1] with evaluation functions such as piece squares, attack heuristics, root-evaluation, as well as the opening book and time controls incorporated from Bionic ^[2].

ChessBrainVB,
an open source chess engine by Roger Zuehlsdorf, written in Visual Basic to run under 32-bit Windows, first announced and released in September 2015 ^[1]. The common source subset could either compiled using Visual Basic 6.0 to create a Winboard compliant executable - or, albeit about 15 times slower, may be interpreted by Visual Basic for Applications to run under Microsoft Office applications, that is Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, along with an own GUI based on Windows Forms.

ChessBrainVB was intially based on the source code of LarsenVB by Luca Dormio, which in turn was inspired by the C program Faile 0.6 by Adrien M. Regimbald. Still using the 10x12 mailbox board representation, ChessBrainVB's search ^[2] and evaluation subsequently improved influenced by ideas from open source programs such as CuckooChess, Sjeng, Protector and Stockfish combined with own ideas ^[3].

		Chessmate, a chess program by Wim van der Maaten written in BBC BASIC and inline Assembly, first for the 6502 processor of the Acorn Atom ^[1] and later for the ARM processor of the Acorn Archimedes ^[2]. Chessmate had its debut at the DOCCC 1985, where it became runner-up of the Group B tied with winner Storm, and further played the DOCCC 1986 on the Atom, and the DOCCC 1992 and DOCCC 1993 on the Archimedes.

a WinBoard aka Chess Engine Communication Protocol compliant chess engine by Luigino Viscione, written in Visual Basic 6. Dimitri applies common search techniques such as alpha-beta with transposition table and quiescence search inside an iterative deepening loop, along with null move pruning, futility pruning, and LMR - its evaluation is aware of threats, center control, and king safety, and features a tapered eval using piece-square tables. Already published in 2003 ^[1] a year before Luigino Viscione's second engine ECE in C++, Dimitri 3 came back after ten years in April 2017. Dimitri 3.61 was released in August 2017 ^[2].

		EtaBeta, a chess engine by Antonia Jeanrenaud, competing the WCCC 2006 in Turin. EtaBeta, written in Visual Basic, is not a conventional alpha-beta searcher, but uses an own approach to analyse and select a move. Alessandro Scotti on EtaBeta: "This program is the most original I know of, and the only one with the evaluation of a move as written comment on why the move is good or not. Unfortunately, the search of Etabeta is too shallow compared to more traditional algorithms, and often remains victim of combinations it realizes too late" ^[1] .

		GambitVB, a chess program by Wim Rens running under the Windows .NET framework. GambitVB plays reasonable chess, has an own GUI, and is open source, distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License version 3 or later ^[1]. It is written in Visual Basic and time critical parts in none managed C++, incorporating old ideas of Wim Rens' earlier commercial program Gambiet, as well as old ideas not possible to implement with the hardware of the 80s. GambitVB is object-oriented, as described elaborately with UML class diagrams in a developer guide in MS Word format ^[2].

Description

GambitVB has a 10x12 Board and applies alpha-beta with killer heuristic inside an iterative deepening framework with aspiration windows. Since GambitVB v2, the program performs some kind of best-first algorithm and keeps huge parts of the search tree in memory, which offers fast access to valuable move tree search informations, missing in the standard depth-first approach. This can grow up to millions of tree nodes linked to a tree structure, which is still a small fraction of the total search tree. So called Score objects, consisting of a vector of material balance and positional evaluation also considering game phases, are used to compare board positions as better, equal, or worse. Release v5.0 is intended for systems with Windows 7 64 bits, at least 4 cores ^[4].

		Hiarcs (HIARCS), a chess engine written by Mark Uniacke. HIARCS is an acronym for Higher Intelligence Auto Response Chess System, and its history of development lasts over 30 years now. Because Hiarcs is written portable in C, it is available for multiple platforms such as Pocket PC, Palm, Apple iPhone & iPod Touch, PDAs, PC and Macintosh computers. Hiarcs opening book authors over the time were Eric Hallsworth, Sebastian Böhme and Harvey Williamson, who is also operating Hiarcs regular at various computer chess tournaments. Hiarcs won the Gold medal at the 4th Computer Olympiad 1992 in London, the WMCCC 1993 in Munich, the IPCCC 2007, after the Rybka disqualification in 2011, the WCCC 2008 in Beijing, the ICT 2009, the WCSC 2011 in Tilburg, the WCSC 2013 in Yokohama ^[1], and the PT 51.

History

Basic

The very first version of Hiarcs was already written 1980 in PDP-11 Basic, when Mark was a 15 year old schoolboy ^[6] . Subsequent versions (5 aka 0.5) were still written in interpreted Basic as well, and to compensate that speed disadvantage, Hiarcs used to be smart rather than fast. Mark Uniacke from Now Walking, 1982-1983: HIARCS 5 ^[7] :

The inspiration for the new HIARCS search was sought from the book Chess Skill in Man and Machine and in particular the article "The heuristic search: An alternative to the alpha-beta minimax procedure" by Larry Harris from Dartmouth College ^[8] . HIARCS was still written in the relatively primitive BASIC programming language and being interpreted it meant the program was rather slow. To compensate for this I developed some heuristics to help guide the search and evaluation in a more targeted way.

C

End of the 80s Hiarcs was rewritten in C. In 1991 Hiarcs 1.0 was released for PCs and the MS-DOS operatig system. Subsequent Hiacs versions were compiled to run under various processors and operating systems, such as x86 and PowerPC under Windows and Mac OS, as well as mobile devices.

Achievements

The rewritten Hiarcs soon competed in computer chess tournaments, in 1989 the 1st Computer Olympiad, and the WMCCC 1991 in Vancouver where Hiarcs won the title of the World Amateur Microcomputer Chess Champion. Hiarcs won the gold medal (shared) at the 4th Computer Olympiad, and became World Microcomputer Chess Software Champion at the WMCCC 1993 in Munich. Hiarcs won several other tournaments or got top rankings, it won the IPCCC 2007, after Rybka's disqualification in June 2011 the WCCC 2008, and the ICT 2009 ^[9]. Further, Hiarcs is two time World Chess Software Champion, succeeding at the WCSC 2011 in Tilburg, and the WCSC 2013 in Yokohama.

1999

HIARCS is written entirely in 'C' on a very spare time basis.

HIARCS searches around an order of magnitude less positions per second (av. 18,000) than most of its competitors. However, it makes up for this apparent slow speed by clever searching and accurate evaluation. HIARCS uses many selective search extension heuristics to guide the search and incorporates a sophisticated tapered search to resolve tactical uncertainties while finding positionally beneficial lines.

HIARCS won the title of World Microcomputer Chess Software Champion in 1993 in Munich, Germany and has won numerous other computer and human tournaments. HIARCS 7.0 is currently the top rated chess program on the SSDF and Selective Search rating lists.

In April 1997, HIARCS 6.0 became the first PC chess program to win a match played at tournament time controls over a FIDE International Master. This great achievement was further built on when HIARCS won the Godesberg Open ahead of Grandmasters and International Masters.

The version competing in this tournament is a new experimental version. The program will be a 32bit Windows version of Hiarcs and will support tablebases. It is expected that all 4 piece and most 5 piece endgame tablebases will be available.

2008

HIARCS is one of the few original PC chess programs still competing in top level chess competition. It has been in development over the last twenty years and since 1991 has always been among the top chess programs in the world. In this time it has led world computer rating lists and won World Championship titles. It was the first PC chess program to defeat a FIDE International Master in a match and has been a favourite of a number of World Chess Champions. So much so that Garry Kasparov said towards the end of his match with Deep Blue2 that "HIARCS is much better positionally than Deep Blue". HIARCS is available on a number of platforms including PC, Macintosh and handheld devices. The handheld Palm version has won multiple matches against GMs and even won a GM/IM tournament in the Philippines. HIARCS' playing style is now very aggressive with a distinctive liking for attacking the opponent's king. This often leads to dynamic exciting games which are often played on a knife-edge. HIARCS is now capable of taking advantage of multi-processors/cores to improve its chess performance making it a very dangerous opponent.

Commerce

Hiarcs is commercially available since 1991. PC- and Windows versions until 12.0 were market as ChessBase engine in conjunction with the Fritz GUI ^[11] , PC Chess Hiarcs 13 UCI is purchased as download product from its own site ^[12] , and requires a Windows PC and an external GUI supporting the UCI protocol. Hiarcs 12.1 and 13 are the chess engines of Pocket Fritz by ChessBase ^[13] ^[14] .

Chess Explorer

Since August 2012, Hiarcs has its own GUI. The Hiarcs Chess Explorer is bundled with Hiarcs 14, based on the program which won the WCSC 2011, and can further be used with any UCI compatible chess engine ^[15] .

		Kanguruh, a 32-bit WinBoard compliant chess engine written by Thomas McBurney in PowerBASIC. Kanguruh was an experimental project to combine features of Thomas' first chess program Deep BASIC with the Quick BASIC chess program Minimax written by Dieter Steinwender and Chrilly Donninger. Features added were an opening book system, book learning, evaluation cache, pondering, better time management, and a better evaluation function. Kanguruh played four Australasian National Computer Chess Championships.

Kanguruh is an amateur Winboard chess engine written in Power BASIC 3.02 Console Compiler. Kanguruh was started in March 2003 and it's features include 67,000 move opening book database, hash table (Using 64-bit Zobrist keys), offset move generation, killer move table and quiescence search.

2004

NC3 2004 ^[3]

6,258 lines of code, offset pseudo move generator, iterative deepening, aspiration windows, killer move table, evaluation cache, 370,000 move opening book database, book learning and pondering. Program Achievements: Highest rated chess engine written in BASIC at WBEC. Kanguruh is approximately 150 Elo points stronger than last year.

2005

NC3 2005 ^[4]

Kanguruh is a Winboard chess engine written in PowerBASIC 3.04 Console Compiler. Kanguruh uses standard search techniques such as alpha beta with aspiration windows, iterative deepening, killer move table, offset move generator and evaluation cache. Kanguruh features a 670,000 move opening book database and also has a type of book learning feature where it stores separate statistics on each opponent it plays.

Kanguruh has changed little since NC3 2004. The biggest change is to the opening book system, it has been rewritten and redesigned in an attempt to improve the performance of Kanguruh's opening moves. A pondering bug has also been fixed which should improve time management a little.

2006

NC3 2006 ^[5]

Kanguruh is a Winboard compatible chess engine written in PowerBASIC 3.02 Console Compiler and contains approximately 6000 lines of code. Kanguruh features a set of integrated algorithms which I have named the 'Special Heuristically Intelligent Transposition Engine' (S.H.I.T.E.), it is these set of algorithms that is mostly responsible for Kanguruh's style and performance of play. Although Kanguruh is a relatively weak engine, it is the highest rated engine written in BASIC on WBEC.

LarsenVB,
a WinBoard compliant open source chess engine written by Luca Dormio in Visual Basic, inspired by the C program Faile by Adrien Regimbald, and first released in October 1999 ^[1]. LarsenVB participated at various Italian Computer Chess Championships, from 2001 until 2008 .

Description

LarsenVB has a Mailbox board representation, and features most "classics" algorithms like alpha-beta, iterative deepening, and quiescence search, while it still lacks a transposition table and null move pruning. The evaluation function is quite simple and considers pawn structure, basic centralization of minor pieces and King (in the endgame), basic King safety related to castling, pawn structure and open files ^[2].

a chess program by L. H. Verberkt written 1981 in Basic which played the DOCCC 1982 in Wageningen on a Video Genie with Z80 CPU. Verberkt had predicted that his program would lose all of its games, but nevertheless found it fun to participate ^[1].

an early chess program written in 1977/78 by Mark Watson in Basic for the Apple II, distributed by Apple on their demo cassette tape ^[1] ^[2]. Mark Watson Chess participated at the Second West Coast Computer Faire Microcomputer Chess Tournament in March 1978 in the class C section for Basic programs ^[3].

		Matilde, a WinBoard compliant chess engine written by Andrea Lanza in Visual Basic and later ported to C++, first released in May 2005 ^[1], the Basic program as open source engine ^[2]. Matilde utilizes a Mailbox board representation. Alpha-beta is used inside an iterative deepening framework with aspiration windows. Checks and certain passed pawn moves are extended.

a didactic open source chess program written in QuickBASIC by Dieter Steinwender and Chrilly Donninger, which appeared 1995 in Steinwender's and Friedel's German book Schach am PC ^[1]. The program is apparently based on Donninger's 1994 C program with the same name ^[2], and a program published by Steinwender in Computerschach und Spiele 1984 ^[3]. Minimax features a Mailbox board representation with offset move generation, aspiration alpha-beta search within an iterative deepening framework. Minimax has been converted to a WinBoard chess engine by Thomas McBurney in 2003 ^[4]. Martin Bauer ported Minimax to Delphi and further applied enhancements for the UCI compliant DelphiMax.

		Neurone, a Chess Engine Communication Protocol aka WinBoard compatible chess engine by Luca Lissandrello written in Visual Basic .NET ^[1]. It uses a transposition table and is able to ponder. From the twenty-first version, the ability of self-learning was implemented, based on some machine learning techniques. The author called these techniques 'neurolearning' because of the great similarity to the human reasoning. As one of the weaker chess engines around ^[2], Neurone played the IOCSC 2010, IOCSC 2011, and IOCSC 2012 editions of the Italian Open Chess Software Cups, and the IGT 2013, IGT 2014, IGT 2015, and IGT 2016 over the board, and on-line the CCT14 and CCT15.

Numpty chess,
a free Chess Engine Communication Protocol (aka Winboard) compatible chess engine by Chris Tatham. Having initially been started in JustBasic ^[1] it was subsequently translated into, and developed in FreeBasic ^[2] . Initially released in December 2005, Numpty has always had an open source code base. It is a comparatively weak engine, having a primary focus of being a reasonable but beatable opponent to casual and club players^[3] .

ProChess,
an UCI compliant open source chess engine written by Edoardo Manino in Visual Basic, first released in November 2011, in October 2012 with source code ^[1]. ProChess features a 0x88 board representation, negamax alpha-beta PVS with iterative deepening, transposition table, null move pruning, futility pruning, IID and a capture and promotion only quiescence search. Move ordering considers MVV-LVA, SEE and history heuristic. Only safe checks with positive SEE are extended . A tapered eval interpolates between opening and endgame scores, primarily based on piece-square tables ^[2].

Tournament Play

ProChess played the IOCSC 2011 and the IOCSC 2012 Italian Open Chess Software Cup, the latter as best Original program, and the CCT15 scoring 50%. At the IGT 2013, ProChess lost the final from Chexa.

Quigley's algebraic chess program by Edward John Quigley, originally written in the 70s for the PDP-8 in Basic, and later ported to several different computers.

QCHESS is a Chess game written in BASIC that uses an algorithmic model of the game of Chess. The program as submitted to DECUS represents the end of about two years of work. Originally written for the PDP-8, QCHESS has been run on several different computers.
