Alan Baisley,
was an American chess master and computer scientist. As MIT-student he was chess expert, tester, and book-author of The Greenblatt Chess Program also known as Mac Hack ^[1] ^[2], and Tech, the Technology Chess Program by James Gillogly from Carnegie Mellon University. Tech 2 was Alan Baisley's own implementation, re-written and further developed in assembly language on a PDP-10. It gained about 25% in speed over the BLISS version on the same machine ^[3]. Tech 2 was runner-up at the ACM 1973, with Tech also competing ^[4], and further participated at the WCCC 1974 in Stockholm ^[5]. Alan Baisley transferred to Berkeley, where he became involved with the counterculture of the late 1960's and early 1970's. The word was that he died of a drug overdose while still a very young man ^[6].

"Robert Q", a computer programmed to play chess, was beaten in its first competition with a human, Carl Wagner. The computer, at MIT in Cambridge, Mass., was operated by Allen Moulton, and R. William Gosper, while Wagner made his moves several miles away in the YMCU in Boston. The moves were relayed into the computer by teletype operated by Alan Baisley. "Robert Q" was entered as an experiment, in the monthly Boylston Chess Club Tournament at the Young Mens Christian Union.

		Boris Baczynskyj, (1945 - 2008) was an Ukrainian American journalist, FIDE Master, Philadelphia chess legend ^[1], chess coach and writer. He earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Yale University in 1967. While in college, he was active in the civil-rights movement and was arrested during a protest march in Florida. Before he became a full time chess coach, he served in the Peace Corps in Thailand ^[2] and was working as stringer in Cambodia in 1975 when the Khmer Rouge overthrew the government ^[3]. Along with David E. Welsh, Boris Baczynskyj co-authored Computer Chess II ^[4], and further anatomized some games of the ACM 1984, as published in the ICCA Journal. He served as editor of Chess Life, worked for Hayden Software on the Sargon III manual, and was affiliated with Fidelity International as chess advisor ^[5], also responsible for Fidelity's opening book.

Cray has recently refurbished its tournament book - as evidenced by the tricky sequence it essays here. The usual follow-up to White's second move is 3.c3, initiating the Smith-Morra Gambit. 3. ... e5? Probably any computer, left to its own devices, would "find" this inferior move. What chip worth its silicon could resist discerning the "key" point that Black holds its extra pawn because 4.Nxe5? is plastered by 4. ...Qa5, followed by 5. ... Qxe5, Ahhh! But the move weakens the d5-square and the a2-f7 diagonal. That's not important to a chess computer, which, in Valvo's felicitous formulation, 'just loves to eat'.

Machines' materialistic tendencies are one reason why humans forced-feed computers with opening books. To the amazement of the Spracklens, operating Fidelity X, their machine was now out of book. They suspected a technical failure. Actually the failure was all human. Fidelity's Chess Advisor, who had designed the book used in San Francisco, had simply failed to include Cray's opening sequence. Although White's opening is unusual, it is not unprecedented. Certainly it belonged in the book, which encompasses many thousands of moves.

I happen to know this story because, for almost two years, I worked as the only Chess Advisor Fidelity Computer Products ever had. Better is 3. ... Nc6, 3. ... e6, 3. ... d6, which should transpose into normal Sicilian variations.

Ballicora on Gaviota ^[9], to name a few. Carlos was also involved in providing opening books for the Arena GUI ^[10].

a Scottish Microsoft certified technology specialist, solutions expert, and professional developer ^[1]. As chess programmer, Chris is author the private chess engine Azraël ^[2]. He serves as main tester, web programmer, interviewer and clone and derivative chess engine investigator for the Arena team. As opening book author, Chris Conkie created the Gladiator Book, as adapted by Buzz at CCT9 ^[3] and by Dirty at WCRCC 2010, as well used in engine rating list such as the CCRL ^[4], and created the Arena ECO text files ^[5].

		Daniel Mehrmann, a German computer chess programmer and author of the chess engine Homer. Daniel started his computer chess career as Opening Book Author and team member of Michael Ehrig's engine Greif in the 90s. He later cooperated with Ulrich Türke as book author of Comet and started to write his own engine Homer ^[1]. 		Danny Kopec, (February 28, 1954 – June 12, 2016 ^[1]) was an American computer scientist, associate professor at the Brooklyn College ^[2], international chess master, chess and computer chess writer and assistant tournament director and reporter of various ACM North American Computer Chess Championships ^[3] , chess programmer and Opening Book Author ^[4] . Along with Larry Harris et al., Danny Kopec was co-author of Dartmouth CP ^[5], competing the ACM 1973 ^[6] . In 1975 Kopec graduated from Dartmouth College and later wrote his Ph.D. in Machine Intelligence at the University of Edinburgh, Thesis: Human and Machine Representations of Knowledge, supervisor Donald Michie ^[7] . In 1982 Danny Kopec and Ivan Bratko designed the Bratko-Kopec Test ^[8] ^[9]. Danny Kopec died on June 12, 2016 from pancreatic cancer ^[10].

In 1980 I spent another summer in Edinburgh as a guest of Donald Michie. Since the low point of 1975, thanks to assiduous and inventive joint pursuit of funding possibilities by Donald and Jean, the Machine Intelligence Research Unit was alive with work focused on chess endgames. There were students, including Tim Niblett and Alen Shapiro. Danny Kopec was there, perhaps formally as a student, but de facto as the resident chess consultant. Ivan Bratko visited frequently. Alen was the administrator of the dream computing environment of that time: a small PDP-11 running Unix.

		David Neil Lawrence Levy, (born 1945 in London) a Scottish International Master chess player (IM Title 1969), Bachelor of Science in Pure Maths, Physics and Statistics ^[1] , renowned computer chess expert and promoter, tournament organizer, businessman, and president of the ICGA, the International Computer Games Association. David Levy authored and co-authored an enormous number of articles and books on Chess, Computer Chess and AI-Topics. Noteworthy is the commercial edition of his Ph.D. thesis Love and Sex With Robots: The Evolution of Human-Robot Relationships ^[2] , which he defended successfully on October 11, 2007, at Maastricht University, The Netherlands.

The Gambler

The Levy Bet

		In 1968, Donald Michie, founder of the Department of Machine Intelligence and Perception at the University of Edinburgh, invited Levy, already a strong international chess player and graduated computer scientist, to the Artificial Intelligence (AI) workshop in Edinburgh ^[6] . Levy played a friendly game of chess against John McCarthy, which Levy won. McCarthy remarked that David was able to beat him, but predicted a computer program would beat David within ten years. David then offered the famous bet, that within that time no chess program would beat him in a tournament match. McCarthy took the bet after consulting Michie ^[7] . The two made a 500 Pound bet, which was later more than doubled when Donald Michie, Seymour Papert from MIT and Ed Kozdrowicki from the University of California, joined in the wager ^[8] . David Levy redeemed the bet ten years later, winning a match against Chess 4.7 in Toronto, 1978 ^[9] . He won a second 5 year bet in 1984, versus Cray Blitz, and then offered a price for the first computer chess team beating him. He finally got crashed 0-4 by Deep Thought in 1989 ^[10].

Did they all pay up?

Following letter by David Levy was published in the ICCA Newsletter, Vol. 2, No 1, February 1979:

Since my match in Toronto, last August and September, in which I won my ten years old bet, many people have asked me the inevitable question, "Did they all pay up?", meaning the four people with whom I made the bet. I should like to use the pages of the Newsletter to answer this question and to save people from writing to me or asking me about it.

Donald Michie, John McCarthy and Seymour Papert all paid promptly and with good sportsmanship, just as I would have done had I lost. Edward Kozdrowicki, currently of the Aerospace Corporation in El Segundo, California, has not paid and has refused to respond in a positive fashion to a number of telephone calls and letters.

I trust that this answers all questions relating to the payment of the bet.

Advent of EGT

CHAOS failed

Quote by David Levy from his Computer Chess Compendium, The Endgame, pp. 293-294:

The Ending of KRPKR, first attracted the attention of chess programmers in 1974. I was talking to the programmers of CHAOS, during the ACM 1974 in San Diego, and they expressed doubt at my statement that within a year they would not be able to program a computer to play this configuration correctly for both sides, winning with the extra pawn whenever a win was possible, drawing with a pawn less whenever the game really should end in a draw. The discussion closed with a $100 bet, and at the following year's tournament they paid up, admitting that the task was so difficult that they had not even been able to start on it.

Thompson's Databases

The discussion on KRPKR at ACM 1974 further inspired Ken Thompson to work some 10 years on chess endgames and to develop the Thompson's Databases ^[12] :

The second tournament I was in was in San Diego in about '75, '74. And in that tournament David Levy, who is a famous chess personality, was the tournament director. And after the games we were in the bar talking and he was saying that "computers can't play endgames, even simple endgames and they never will." And he said "I am an expert in the rook and pawn against rook endgame and a computer will never play a rook and pawn against rook endgame." And so, I went to my room that evening and was calculating the numbers and came to the conclusion that this was doable, that you could solve that game, absolutely solve it by a different mechanism, you know, not by normal computer chess but by a different mechanism. You could just have the answer and look it up and make a table of everything you are supposed to do. And I came back the next day and told him about it and he say's "nah, it takes too many plys, you know", and I said "no, it is ply independent, this is a different method", so he say's "ah no" so he just "poo poo'd me" and I got sort of, angry is not the right word but I got, you know, you know, so I went home and I worked probably for about ten years on endgames.

Scotch versus Vodka

Being rather greedy, I made a similar bet with Dr. Arlazarov of Kaissa fame during the 1977 World Computer Championship in Toronto. This time the bet was a case of Scotch (if I lost) against a case of Vodka. We agreed that Yuri Averbakh, President of the U.S.S.R. Chess Federation and a renowned endgame expert, would act as arbiter. Just about one year later I heard that I owed Arlazarov a case of Scotch, and section 8.3 of this compendium describes how he and his colleagues collected the wager ^[13] .

WCCC and ICCA

WCCC

David Levy, already associated with Monroe Newborn and Ben Mittman from the early ACM Computer Chess Championships, was initiator and co-founder of the World Computer Chess Championship in 1974, as suggested by the Soviet programmers of Kaissa ^[14] :

Since 1972 (1970 Editor) in the USA and Canada were hold the yearly championships of North America among the chess programs, organized by the ACM. The team of Kaissa directed the organizers of these tournaments to the thought to conduct a world championship, whose organization within the framework its regular congress took upon itself.

ICCA

Three years later at the 2nd WCCC 1977 in Toronto, together with more enthusiastic chess programmers and suggested by Barend Swets, David Levy co-founded the International Computer Chess Association ICCA - Ben Mittman was elected as its first president. David Levy organized a lot of computer chess championships, acting as tournament director, reporter or as participant. He was founder and organizer of the Computer Olympiad and the Mind Sports Olympiads.

President

From 1986 to 1992, David Levy was president of the ICCA, then vice president until 1999 and since then until the present president again, since 2002 of the renamed ICGA ^[15] .

Computer Chess and AI Business

Intelligent Software

In 1979, along with his business partner Kevin O’Connell, David Levy founded Philidor Software, and in 1981 Intelligent Software ^[16] . Business was developing and trading dedicated chess computers ^[17] ^[18] and programs for home computers and PCs. Intelligent Software had several computer chess programmers under contract, Mark Taylor, David Broughton, Mike Johnson, Richard Lang and a Checkers programmer called Martin Bryant ^[19] . Primary business and trading partners were Eric Winkler ^[20] and Eric White ^[21] with their respective companies.

Intelligent Toys

David Levy is now CEO of Intelligent Toys Ltd., a London-based company founded in 2001 that develops toys that incorporate AI, and led the teams that won the Loebner Prize two times in 1997 and 2009 ^[22] ^[23] .

a Filipino pyroprocessing engineer ^[1] and as computer chess aficionado, active tester of the CCRL group, also interested in chess programming and high performance compiling of engines from source ^[2], especially Toga ^[3]. Denis also served as book author of Gunnar Harms' Bobcat engine at the WCRCC 2011.

		Detlef (Elvis) Pordzik, (May 9, 1952 - June 8, 2003) ^[1] was a German computer chess expert, correspondence chess player, journalist and opening book author. Elvis wrote computer chess related articles in the German chess newspaper Rochade Europa, was Editor In Chief of the German ChessBits computer chess magazine and author of the Shredder 4 Opening Book ^[2] .

		Erdogan Günes, a Turkish computer chess expert and book author residing in Germany. Erdo cooked opening books for various programs, notably at the WCCC 2010 in Kanazawa even as team member of two participating programs, Rondo by Zach Wegner and Anthony Cozzie as well as Fridolin by Christian Sommerfeld. Further programs supported and operated by Erdogan were Deep Sjeng by Gian-Carlo Pascutto ^[1], Hiarcs by Mark Uniacke, Goliath by Michael Borgstädt, Hydra by Chrilly Donninger, Zappa by Anthony Cozzie, Falcon by Omid David ^[2], and Komodo by Don Dailey, Mark Lefler, and Larry Kaufman. His tremendous operating skills in Blitz was a warrant for top places and Blitz titles ^[3] at World ^[4] and World Microcomputer Chess Championships, most recently winning with Komodo at the WCCC 2016 and WCCC 2017 both in Leiden.

Döner Gambit

Erdogan is famous for his formidable opening ideas and preparation. Well known is the Döner-Gambit, a Blackmar-Diemer like opening, extensively analyzed by Günes ^[9] , which usually occurs as following: 1. d4 d5 2. Nc3 Nf6 3. f3 with later e4 to encourage black to capture e4 and f3. Christopher Lutz proved Döner Gambit quite harmless, if black exchanges queens and give back material ^[10] .
