		Anatoli, a WinBoard compliant chess engine by Martin Giepmans, first released in April 2008 and freely available via Leo Dijksman's WBEC Ridderkerk site ^[1]. Like Martin's earlier engine SpiderChess, Anatoli is written in Delphi. Martin named it after Anatoly Karpov (Dutch transliteration Anatoli Karpov) ^[2] because he admired Karpov's subtle playing style and had the hope he might teach Anatoli to play a bit like Karpov, though ^[3] ^[4].

Bobby,
a chess program by Hans-Joachim Kraas and Günther Schrüfer, competing at various World Computer- and World Microcomputer Chess Championships from 1983 until 1995 ^[1] . Bobby had a strong WCCC 1986 in Cologne, Germany, defeating the later Champion Cray Blitz in round two, with some chances to tie first place until the last round loss against Schaeffer's Sun Phoenix ^[2] . In 1993, Bobby II won the 3rd International Paderborn Computer Chess Championship.

The development of Bobby started in 1982 as part of Kraas' and Schrüfer's MSc thesis. It was written entirely in Pascal on the IBM 4341-2 ^[3] of the TU Braunschweig. In 1987 Bobby II was a complete redesign in C on a Atari ST microcomputer. A commercial successor of Bobby II is the program Doctor?, market by ChessBase as 16-bit engine in 1995 as analysis engine for ChessBase/Windows 1.0, and in 1998 as 32-bit add-on engine of the Fritz 5.32 package ^[4] ^[5]. According to Das große Computerschachbuch. ^[6] , Bobby had a sophisticated evaluation, with respect to king safety and passed pawns. Bobby's search was a STC-Search (solution tree cost oriented search) ^[7] , as elaborated in Schrüfer's 1988 PhD thesis ^[8]

Strategic Quiescence Search

Bobby applied a so called Strategic Quiescence Search as described in a 1989 ICCA Journal paper by Günther Schrüfer ^[12]. Schrüfer claimed the inclusion of certain none tactical moves in quiescence search an improvement over a pure tactical search in Bobby. He also stated, for some programs it might be a significant speed penalty in the number of moves searched per second to do so, i.e. in generating quiet moves. In Bobby this was irrelevant, since many of the values required have been precomputed for each node in any case. Beside the standard standing pat forward pruning conditions FP1 and FP2, all successors, not only captures, promotions and checks, were tested versus the forward pruning condition FP3.

Eval+

The evalPlus value is +oo in case of checking moves near the horizon, but scaled to zero for deeper searches to avoid "infinite" checks and search explosion. Otherwise evalPlus is incrementally calculated by eval(n) and move properties. In case of tactical moves, the sum of eval(n) and the value of a captured and/or promoted piece and a constant representing half the value of a Pawn is taken. For quiet or strategical moves, evalPlus relies on maximum score differences of two consecutive evaluations n´ and n, triggered by history success counters:

Positive history based success counters are associated with the maximum difference of two consecutive evaluations n´ and n found so far, while zero saturated counters also have zero difference and are therefor always pruned by FP3. Following scheme is used to update the butterfly boards:

		Bogol, a series of exclusive dedicated chess computers, developed and manufactured in the early 80s by the German Omikron Electronic GmbH ^[1]. It was Germany's second chess computer in 1981/82 after the Mephisto by Hegener & Glaser, and was supported by the West German Federal Ministry of Education and Science ^[2], but only released in small quantities and prototypes. The computer's name was in remembrance to chess grandmaster Efim Dmitriyevich Bogolyubov. The 6502 processing unit with a program by Olaf Schinkel and the sensory chessboard were seperate units, connected via cable. The Bogol 5.0 prototype, which had reversed square colors, played a strong European MCC 1982 represented by the Omikron team of Martin Suhl and Gerd Krey. Despite missing the first round and losing by default, Bogol managed 4 out of 7 ^[3] ^[4] . According to Hans-Peter Ketterling, the Bogol 5.0 was never realeased to the market, apparently due to its close relation to another chess computer ^[5] .

		Boris, an early dedicated chess computer, which appeared in February 1978, designed and manufactured by Applied Concepts ^[1] and marketed by primary distributor Chafitz. Already in March 1978, Boris played Second West Coast Computer Faire Microcomputer Chess Tournament in the "microcomputers with less than 8K of memory class" ^[2]. The name was likely in dependence on the given name of Boris Spassky, who lost the Chess World Championship 1972 from Bobby Fischer in Reykjavik. Boris ran on a Fairchild F8 8-bit microprocessor with only 2.5 KiB ROM and 256 byte RAM. David Lindsay was hired to program the machine ^[3], and two further Boris models with Lindsay programs appeared in 1979, the first travel chess computer Boris Diplomat ^[4] ^[5], where Lindsay holds a patent ^[6] on the Chess piece font ^[7], and the Boris Master ^[8].

Just to rewind a bit, one evening when I was home having dinner, I got a call from Bobby Fischer. He was excited about our electronic chess game "Boris" and I realized that if he was interested in our electronic chess game that there was a major market out there. We increased our development of electronic games and yes, we hired the brightest and the best programmers in the country to develop programs for our games.

Co-Author

The ICGA site mentions Rex Kent as author of Boris Experimental which played the 1st World Microcomputer Chess Championship 1980 in London ^[13]. However, Boris X was already the work of Kathe and Dan Spracklen, and additionally with modifications by John Aker and Terry Fredrick. Rex Kent operated Boris at the PCW-MCC 1978 ^[14]. It is a bit unclear whether Kent was operator or co- or book-author of the early Boris otherwise credited to David Lindsay.

Boris 2.5

In 1979, following the development of the original Boris when more advanced programs were required, Arleen and Steve Chafitz contracted Kathe and Dan Spracklen to be their chess programmers for their Chafitz modular game system as well the Applied Concepts Great Game Machine ^[15]. Their Sargon 2.5 program appeared as Chafitz Sargon 2.5 MGS module ^[16], and in 1980, as Chafitz ARB Sargon 2.5 ^[17], also called Boris Sargon 2.5 ^[18] or simply dubbed Boris 2.5. John Aker and Terry Fredrick, affiliated with Applied Concepts, were involved in improving the Sargon and Boris program ^[19].

Boris Handroid

		Boris Handroid was the first but very rare electronic chess robot from 1980 ^[20], with 64 Hall effect sensors to recognize pieces, and three servomechanisms to control the cartesian robotic arm. The Handroid program, adapted by Terry Fredrick ^[21] was also based on Sargon 2.5 by Kathe and Dan Spracklen.

Boris Experimental

Boris Experimental (Boris X) was the further development of the Boris 2.5 aka Sargon 2.5 program, but no longer by the Spracklens, who after their experience no longer worked for Chafitz, but for Samole's Fidelity Electronics. John Aker continued the job.

WMCCC 1980

The Sargon based Boris Experimental played the 1st World Microcomputer Chess Championship, September 4-9, 1980, in London, where it only lost versus later champion and Sargon based Challenger X, blundering an endgame a piece up ^[23], and became second with 4 out of 5!

Controversy

ACM 1980

Boris X was also registered for the ACM 1980. A brief description is given in the tournament booklet with Applied Concepts CEO Alan Mead as representative ^[24] :

The program uses alpha-beta pruning with recently developed and improved search heuristics. The program runs in 8k of program space and has nine levels of play including two tournament levels. The tournament level play is expected to be 100 points stronger than the present BORIS 2.5 program.

But Boris X, despite registered, finally did not play the ACM 1980. Kathe Spracklen had filed a protest, claiming Boris X is too similar to Sargon 2.5, and requested mutual comparison of the source code. After John Aker admitted that Boris X was a revamped Sargon 2.5, Boris was rejected ^[25] ^[26].

ACM 1981

At the 12th ACM 1981, Boris X was mentioned in the booklet again, now with a long list of its authors and Applied Concepts representatives ^[27], but again, did not participate, likely also because David Slate was already competing with Nuchess:

Chess System Tal (Complete Chess System 2 - TAL, CSTal, AI Factory Chess Tal),
a commercial chess program developed by Chris Whittington in the mid 90s as successor of the Complete Chess System, marketed through his company Oxford Softworks. The first version was a MS-DOS program, Chess System Tal II, released in 1999 ran under Windows. Chess System Tal is famous for its entertaining, strong human playing style with focus on King attacks and speculative sacrifices, resembling that of the former World Champion Mikhail Tal. Chess System Tal II was further marketed by Ubisoft ^[1] and continued by Jeff Rollason's AI Factory ^[2] ^[3], who now own the rights on the CSTal sources ^[4].

CSTal played two World Microcomputer Chess Championships, the WMCCC 1995, the WMCCC 1997, and three Aegon Tournaments, Aegon 1995, Aegon 1996 and Aegon 1997 ^[5].

CSTal is designed to play in the romantic and dangerous style of Michael Tal, famous for his daring and aggressive style of play.

Programmer Chris Whittington has developed a radically different approach to chess programming, concentrating on speculative chess knowledge within the evaluation function; and the use of forward pruning techniques which rely on this evaluation function knowledge.

One effect of using a high knowledge-based approach is that CSTal operates at a nodes per second rate much less than programs with simple evaluation functions. The risks and benefits of this strategy are obvious; on the one side CSTal is able to steer games towards tactical king-attack complexities, and to execute stunning sacrifices. On the other side the disparity in effective search depth means that state of the art search programs will have the advantage if the position does not contain factors where CSTal's knowledge is able to give it the edge.

CSTal's computer-computer games are often very exciting and double-edged, with the result in doubt until the end. It is capable of causing serious upsets to top programs, but also of being seriously upset itself.

In a materialistic world, in the materialistic world of computer chess, Chess System Tal offers the alternative pathway of idealism.

		Donna, an UCI compliant, experimental open source chess engine by Michael Dvorkin, written in the Go programming language, freely distributable under the terms of MIT license and first released in December 2014. Donna is dedicated to Lithuanian chess grandmaster Donatas Lapienis (April 8, 1936, Kaunas - April 10, 2014, Vilnius ^[1] ), who was Michael Dvorkin's chess teacher. In the mid 80s, Donatas Lapienis was highest ranked correspondence chess player in the world with an Elo rating of 2715 ^[2] .

		Fischerle, a Java-based chess engine that has been developed by Roland Stuckardt. Fischerle implements the UCI protocol. It is recommended to employ it from within the Arena environment. Additionally, Fischerle has an own GUI providing supplementary configuration and testing features; in principle, it can thus be used independently of UCI based chess GUIs. Fischerle is available for download at its author's web pages .

Fischerle’s representation of chess positions is based on the rotated bitboard model. Fischerle employs some well-known techniques of enhanced alpha-beta minimax search:

The static evaluation parameters of Fischerle are amenable to external fine tuning based on a concept of so-called efb (evaluation factor block) files, thus enabling the user to influence, within certain bounds, Fischerle’s playing style (e. g. to prefer closed positions, etc.). Fischerle comes with its own, small opening book, covering about 220K positions and some 540K moves. Fischerle supports pondering via its UCI interface.

Performance

According to extensive test tournaments, Fischerle is sufficiently well equipped with chess wit in order to compete in the CCRL 40/40 Elo 2250-2350 range. Fischerle 0.9.70 SE has been ranked at place 235 of the CCRL 40/40 list with a CCRL 40/40 Elo score of 2291 (March 25, 2017).

Latest Version

Fischerle 0.9.80 SE (March 24, 2017) - a slightly more aggressive forward pruning scheme is now applied; quiescence search has been mildly refined (adding, in particular, delta pruning); the piece value assigned to bishops and the bishop pair bonus have been slightly reduced; king safety ealuation has been refined; the mate approaching scheme has been enhanced.

		Fischerle ^[3] is named after a famous character of Elias Canetti’s novel „Die Blendung“ („Auto-da-Fé“) ^[4] ^[5] , which plays in Vienna ^[6] around protagonist Peter Kien, a middle-aged philologist and Sinologist: Siegfried Fischerle ^[7] , a Jewish ^[8] hunchbacked dwarf and pander, is a chess addict whose dream is it to go to America to challenge chess champion José Raúl Capablanca in order to get rich and famous. Canetti wrote his novel in the years 1930/31, coincidentally more than one decade before Nazi German Oberfeldwebel Siegfried Fischer was decorated with the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross, Jewish artist and poet Peter Kien died in Auschwitz concentration camp, and more than two decades before chess genius Bobby Fischer entered the international chess scene ^[9] .

		GreKo, a Chess Engine Communication Protocol compliant open source engine by Vladimir Medvedev, written in C++ and relying on the Standard Template Library. Starting the development in 2002 ^[1], GreKo was first a classical alpha-beta searcher within an iterative deepening framework, performing an evaluation considering material and various positional aspects such as pawn structure. Checks, recaptures and passers arriving the seventh rank were extended. The opening book utilizes the hash table to recognize transpositions. Over the time, GreKo experienced various changes, applying a 0x88 board with piece lists, a hybrid bitboard-0x88 approach, and in 2008, Magic bitboards. Search has become PVS, null move pruning with R=4, and a lot of new evaluation terms such as mobility and material imbalances were added, and position learning applied. Since version 5.0, GreKo further supports UCI ^[2]. In April 2011, GreKo was ported by Aart Bik for Android using the GUI of his Chess for Android application ^[3]. GreKo 2015 ML, released in July 2016 ^[4], features a command for learning from a PGN file. The algorithm is similar to Texel's Tuning Method, but using evaluation function instead of expensive quiescence search for making predictions of game results ^[5]. GreKo participated at the 1st Computer Chess Championship of CIS Countries, Moscow 2008.

The program's name is dedicated to the Italian historical chess master Gioachino Greco and is acronym of the Great Kombinator ^[7].

		Kasparov Sparc (Saitek Sparc), a chess computer module by Saitek, with a SPARC processor, and a program by Kathe and Dan Spracklen, dedicated for the SciSys/Saitek module system Saitek Renaissance. A first version of the program played the WMCCC 1991 in Vancouver as Saitek-X, 5th with 4½/7. The loss versus Ed Schröder's ChessMachine Gideon at the WCCC 1992 in Madrid almost ended their involvement in computer chess when they didn't win that world title. Despite, Kasparov Sparc participated a last time at the WMCCC 1993 in Munich operated by Günter Niggemann. Unfortunately, Sparc suffered from hardware problems and finally a broken interface card in the last round ^[1] .

		Kasparov's Gambit, a commercial Kasparov licensees ^[1] chess program for x86 PCs running the MS-DOS operating system, released by Electronic Arts in 1993. It had a SVGA isometric graphic chessboard, and the license of the in that time world's reigning chess champion, Garry Kasparov. During game play, Kasparov pops up in a video window to give advice and context sensitive kibitzing. The engine and graphics was developed by Heuristic Software, MobyGames credits Julio Kaplan, Salim Benbahmed and Don Dailey as programmers, and Garry Kasparov, Larry Kaufman, Marc Leski, Eric Schiller, and Robert Burger as Chess Consultants ^[2] . The engine was based on Heuristic Alpha and its successor Socrates by Dailey and Kaufman. While Socrates was written in 386 assembly, the majority of Kasparov's Gambit engine was written in C, with the 'loader' for the sound and video written in 386 assembly. This last was written by Hugh S. Myers a consultant brought to the project by Electronic Arts. Interesting to note that all participants working for Heuristic Software were either nationally or internationally rated chess players.

Larry Kaufman on the initial release and history of Kasparov's Gambit in Computer Chess Reports 1993 ^[5] :

As for the Socrates (aka "Titan") programs of Don Dailey and myself, they are finally making their commercial debut. Here is the story. After completing the "C" language program "Alpha" for Heuristic Software, which was never marketed despite winning the second Harvard Cup, we developed a new 386 assembly-language program for Heuristic Software called "Socrates", which won the third Harvard Cup, defeating three out of five grandmasters in Action chess games, including a victory over the year's U.S. Champion, Patrick Wolff. We then went on to develop a new "C" language program on our own, called "Titan", which won the 1993 ACM International Computer Chess Championship. We then "traded" that program for Socrates; we felt that Socrates should be even stronger than Titan once we incorporated key improvements used in Titan into Socrates. After all, since Socrates is in assembly language, it should be stronger than Titan if they use similar algorithms. We have now put many improvements into "Socrates", and are finally marketing it, thru a company called MDI, under the name "Socrates 3.0".

Meanwhile Titan, which won the title under the name "Socrates II", was purchased by Electronic Arts to be the chess engine of the mass-market program "Kasparov's Gambit". EA had intended to use Alpha for this, but our ACM title changed their plans. Kasparov's Gambit has just come out. Electronic Arts claims that it contains the chess engine that won the ACM tournament, but my own tests on the commercial version show that in the process of putting the ACM program into KG, something went wrong. Gambit in its initial release has many bugs and does not play the same chess at all as the ACM winner. Knowledge of bishop mobility appears to be missing, as does some other chess knowledge, and Gambit appears to run only about 50-60% of the speed of the ACM program in positions (without bishops) where the two do play and evaluate identically. There are also bugs in the features and the time controls, and the program is rather difficult to use (perhaps because it has so many features). One good thing I can say is that the 3d graphics are superb. In my opinion this product was released prematurely, and Don and I disclaim any responsibility for its playing strength. EA has revealed plans for a "patch", perhaps to be made available over bulletin boards. I have tested the patched version, and have confirmed that most or all of the bugs have been corrected. The new version does play identically to the ACM program and runs at 70-75% of the speed, so it should rate just 30 points below the ACM program. The corrected version should be in stores in November. To check whether a version of Gambit is the corrected or faulty version, look at the file date for "Gambit.exe". If it is October '93 or later, it has the "patch"; if before October it is the flawed version and you should inquire how to get the "patch". With the problems corrected, I can recommend Gambit for the general public, since it has many appealing features and is both instructive and fun, and I can also recommend it for serious players who wish to keep the cost below $50.

a WinBoard compliant open source chess engine written by Luca Dormio in Visual Basic, inspired by the C program Faile by Adrien Regimbald, and first released in October 1999 ^[1]. LarsenVB participated at various Italian Computer Chess Championships, from 2001 until 2008 .

Description

LarsenVB has a Mailbox board representation, and features most "classics" algorithms like alpha-beta, iterative deepening, and quiescence search, while it still lacks a transposition table and null move pruning. The evaluation function is quite simple and considers pawn structure, basic centralization of minor pieces and King (in the endgame), basic King safety related to castling, pawn structure and open files ^[2].

		Morphy, a chess program by primary author John Aker ^[1] for the dedicated chess computer module systems Great Game Machine by Applied Concepts and the Chafitz Modular Game System. The program, written in 6502 assembly is derived from Boris Experimental, which on the other hand was a continued development of the Boris 2.5 aka Sargon 2.5 program by Kathe and Dan Spracklen ^[2] . Morphy appeared in 1981, and was intended to play the middlegame, in conjunction with the during game play exchangeable Gruenfeld and Capablanca cartridges. The trio played the commercial section of the WMCCC 1981, as well the open section as Applied Concepts X, both finishing last ^[3]. The Applied Concepts personal withdrew both entries after some rounds, due to a bug in the Capablanca module ^[4].

Gruenfeld

		The Gruenfeld Edition (1981/1982) was a chess opening module for the Great Game Machine, Chafitz Modular Game System and compatibles. It contained an opening book by chess master John Jacobs ^[7] and a control program by David Slate and Larry Atkin ^[8]. The Gruenfield opening cartridge was made available in June 1981, and covers openings up to move 20. When the book is exhausted, the system gives a signal, to remove and replace it with Morphy ^[9].

Capablanca

		The Capablanca Edition (1981/1982) was an endgame module for the Great Game Machine and the Chafitz Modular Game System, programmed by David Slate and Larry Atkin. The Capablanca module was part of the trio around the Morphy program ^[11]. The endgame starts when the material count is less than about 25, counting a queen as 9, a rook as 5, and so on. When this point has been reached, Morphy also gives a signal. Morphy can continue switching in extra end-game routines, or alternatively, Morphy can be taken out and the Capablanca cartridge inserted for a powerful finish. Capablanca has been available since October 1981 ^[12]. Capablanca was later converted to become the Steinitz module for Great Game Machine, and Chess 7.0 for the Apple II, Atari 800, and Commodore 64. Even later it became "How About a Nice Game of Chess" for the Apple IIe ^[13].

		Nimzo, a chess program by primary developer Chrilly Donninger, subsequently supported by members of the First Vienna Computer Chess Club (Nimzo Werkstatt) concerning testing, chess knowledge, opening book and hardware. The program was first dubbed Nimzo-Guernica in remembrance to Aron Nimzowitsch and as manifest of Chrilly's Anti-war engagement ^[1]. It had its tournament debut at the 3rd Computer Olympiad 1991 and further played the DOCCC 1991 and IPCCC 1991. At the WMCCC 1993, Nimzo-Guernica aka Nimzo-2 upset Mephisto Gideon ^[2] and later winner Hiarcs to lead the pack after five rounds, and finished strong fourth despite 1.5 points out of the last four rounds.

Nimzo-3

Guernica and Nimzo-2 were leaf evaluators to spent 60 to 70 percent of its time in evaluation. The main design criterion for Nimzo-3 was combining the positional play of Nimzo-2 with the tactical strength of a program like Fritz. Nimzo-3 therefor became a Genius/Fritz like program with a complex root evaluation ^[5], called Oracle as proposed by Hans Berliner ^[6] ^[7], and which seems to have been first used by Kaare Danielsen. The oracle approach with very simple, mainly first-order evaluation terms at the leaves, made Nimzo-3 to spent about only 10 to 20 percent on leaf evaluation, yielding in an increased node rate of 400%.

CHE

The CHE and CHE++ declarative language for expressing chess knowledge using a GUI was used to incorporate planning features within the oracle used ^[8].

Commerce

During the WMCCC 1996, Nimzo was still amateur, but soon went commercial as MS-DOS program Nimzo 3.5 and the Windows program Nimzo 2000 distributed by Weiner's Millennium 2000 GmbH, later released as Chess Engine Communication Protocol compliant engine WBNimzo. Nimzo98, Nimzo99 were native ChessBase engines, followed by Nimzo 7.32 and Nimzo 8 and its derivation Schweinehund ^[9] ^[10].

Nimzo is one of the leading professional chess programs. It combines sound positional play with extremely strong tactics. Nimzo-Paderborn is a considerable improved version of the currently commercially available programs Nimzo98, Nimzo99 and Nimzo2000. Nimzo-Paderborn learns automatically from human grandmaster games. It is also equipped with an own Chess-Advice-Language (Che++) which allows strong human players to formulate chess-knowledge. The program can also access in its search endgame databases. It therefore searches regularly from the middlegame into won endgames.

Forward Pruning in Nimzo 2.2.1

Following forward pruning code appears in Nimzo's 2.2.1 search routine ^[12] applied at frontier nodes, notably the aggressive Lang mode at pre-pre-frontier nodes or below. The source was published along with a foreword by Donninger in 2002 ^[13] :

		Philidor, a series of chess programs by David Levy's and Kevin O’Connell's software forge Philidor Software, with David Broughton and Mark Taylor as primary programmers. Philidor was intended as test-bed and development version for programs dedicated for SciSys' and other manufacturers chess computers, but also to play tournaments with an own-brand.

History

Philidor was initially written by Broughton in Z80 ^[2] and subsequent versions in 8086 assembly to either run on an Osborne and later on an IBM PC ^[3], in 1983 commercialized as Parker Chess. Taylor was responsible to port it to 6502 assembly for the SciSys Chess Champion Mark V branch. Parker Chess and Mark V already applied the first version of fractional ply deepening with extensions and reductions, aka SX Algorithm, which was somehow an early implementation of what was later called Late Move Reductions ^[4]. Philidor played the ACM 1981 and ACM 1982, the European MCC 1981 and European MCC 1982, and the WMCCC 1981 in Travemünde and the WCCC 1983 in New York ^[5].

		PK80, PK83, a series of chess programs by Ard van Bergen written in Fortran. As Ard was affiliated with a chess club in Utrecht named in remembrance of Paul Keres ^[1], Keres initials were used as the name of the program. PK80 already played the first DOCCC 1981, running on a PDP-11 ^[2], PK83 the DOCCC 1982, the DOCCC 1983 where it became shared second, the DOCCC 1984, the DOCCC 1985 and the DOCCC 1987. PK83 further played the International Computer Chess Tournament 1984 in Baarn, and the WMCCC 1985 in Amsterdam ^[3].

Ruy-Lopez is a standard alpha-beta searcher, with some innovative forward pruning methods. The evaluation function is quite sophisticated and also slow. After four years programming Torquemada, a Spanish Checkers program, ^[5] ^[6] we began programming Ruy-Lopez in July'97 just for fun. This is a very young program, so we have much room for improving. Currently Spanish Computer Chess Champion.

		Steinitz, a family of chess programs written Larry Atkin in 6502 assembly, distributed as modules for the Great Game Machine by Applied Concepts and the compatible Chafitz Modular Game System.

Steinitz Edition 4

The Steinitz Edition appeared end of 1982 as successor and replacement for the Morphy module ^[2] . It was derived from the Capablanca endgame module, adapted to play also middlegame and opening and likely is related to Chess 7.0 ^[3] .

Steinitz Encore

In 1983/1984 the Steinitz Encore was announced but never originally released. Existing models were either prototypes or later self-constructions ^[6] ^[7] .

		Tigran, an UCI compliant chess engine written by Gábor Mihály in C++. First released as free engine in November 2012, and available as 64 and 32 bit Windows executable ^[1], Tigran's development already started in 2005 ^[2], and had its tournament debut at the Hungarian Sakkprogramok Versenye 2008.

Description

Tigran is a bitboard engine and applies kindergarten bitboards to determine sliding piece attacks. The search is PVS alpha-beta with transposition table, null move pruning and late move reductions inside an iterative deepening framework. Beside the dominating material term, the basic evaluation considers king safety, mobility and pawn structure.
