Almond,
a Clone of Mark Lefler's program Now, by fake author "Richard Hall" ^[1], an alleged student from University of Michigan, who asked the CSVN via Jan Krabbenbos and Hans Secelle to play the ICT 2010. "Richard Hall" further sent another version (?) of Almond to Jim Ablett which appeared to be a clone of an early version of the Myrrdin engine by John Merlino, as confirmed by John, giving some details about the culprit ^[2]. The cloner made only the tiniest attempt to modify the source, even keeping all of internal comments, such as thanking the Chessmaster development team!

The "successor" of Almond, Scaramanga, played the DOCCC 2010, also operated by Hans Secelle who regularly contacted "Richard Hall" ^[3].

Harvey Williamson raised suspicions after Scaramanga was connected from an Indian server at Playchess, and Hans Secelle sent the source code applied to Don Dailey forwarded for confirmation to Mark Lefler. Mark admitted he had naively shared his source code with someone who said he was named "Chinmay" who offered to run Now in a tournament with faster hardware and better compiler, and said he had operated Rybka at ACCA 2008 ^[4].

		Cassia Chess Mate, (Toytronic Chess Electronics, CXG Computachess I) a dedicated chess computer released in 1979 by Hong Kong based manufacturer Cassia by Eric White and Ken Cohen, forerunner of White and Allcock, the computer also shipped as Toytronic Chess Electronics ^[1] ^[2]. Cassia Chess Mate and relatives, such as the CXG Computachess I in 1981 were clones of Ron Nelson's Fidelity Chess Challenger 10 ^[3] ^[4]. While the CXG Computachess I was stopped from shipping into the US, it seems the Chess Mate was further shipped to Europe ^[5], according to Ron Nelson, with an operating manual logo looking like the CXG Computachess one ^[6].

		The Chess Champion MK I was Novag's first dedicated chess computer released in September 1978. It had a Fairchild F8 8-Bit processor running at 1.78 MHz, with 2 KiB ROM and 256 byte RAM. The program was a clone of the Data Cash Systems Inc. CompuChess program, which was developed by David B. Goodrich & Associates ^[1] , while other sources assume David Levy was involved in the development ^[2] ^[3] . Since the cloned software was already more than a year old, it was a weak program even for that early time. Additionally the program could only play with Black, accepted illegal moves, and could even play without Kings. With its strongest level 6, it usually replied not until several days with a move found ^[4]. It was marketed in the US by JS&A, and in Germany by Horten ^[5] and Quelle in different outward variations ^[6].

Karpov Challenge

The MK I was sold in the USA by Joseph Sugarman's company as JS&A Chess computer. They challenged World Champion Anatoly Karpov and offered him $50,000 and a percentage of each unit sold. Karpov first rejected, and later accepted to endorse the game, but offered to let JS&A spend the money on advertisement to spread the word ^[8] ^[9] .

In 1979 Data Cash Systems took legal action against JS&A for breach of copyright ^[10] , which failed because it transpired that the copyright had not been adequately protected in terms of USA law ^[11] ^[12] ^[13] ^[14].

Karpov's Endorsement

In the meantime Peter Auge had made his own arrangements with Anatoly Karpov, presumably with connections to FIDE president Florencio Campomanes and Alfred Kinzel, president of the German Chess Federation ^[15] ^[16], who was also involved the weak computer was distinguished in Germany with a "King's Diplom" ^[17]. Karpov appeared as advisor on the original Novag MK I boxes ^[18] ^[19]. The internals of Karpov's Novag advertisement salaries, not only for the MK I, but also subsequently the Chess Champion MK II ^[20], and Chess Champion Super System III ^[21], went public during the World Chess Championship 1985 when a first Spiegel article appeared in September 30, 1985, which according to Karpov was discrediting him, and the disturbance of the Jungwirth case ^[22]^[23] was allegedly one reason he lost the title to Kasparov, losing three of nine games short after in October 1985. Karpov's former German representative Helmut Jungwirth ^[24] was impeached of misappropriation of Karpov's salary afterwards ^[25]. Accordant to a further Spiegel article ^[26], Peter Auge had transcribed 22 checks to Jungwirth, in total $446,177.50 from December 8, 1978 to January 17, 1981. Jungwirth claimed he paid Karpov partly cash and was also endowed for other services, which Karpov categorical denied at a hearing of witnesses in Berlin ^[27].

Chinito (El Chinito),
a chess program by primary author Eugenio Castillo Jiménez and Pascal Tang competing the WCCC 2002 in Maastricht and the WCCC 2003 in Graz. Chinito further played various French Computer Chess Championships and Massy Tournaments, it won Massy 2002. In 2004, soon after it was found and proved Chinito contained parts of Crafty source ^[1], Eugenio admitted using Crafty, apologized and informed the ICGA and French Computer Chess Association about the issue to accept their decision and disqualification of Chinito from the played events ^[2].

a chess engine clone by German system engineer ^[1] Denis Grafen. Deep<9> played the CSS Online-Masters in 2002/2003 ^[2], and was initially registered to play the IPCCC 2003 ^[3], when short after it was proved a clone of Pepito, the open source chess engine written by Carlos del Cacho. Only after evidence of cloning was presented, Denis Grafen admitted Deep<9> was based on Pepito ^[4].

Fafis,
a Chess Engine Communication Protocol compatible chess engine by Rafael Peña. First versions were written in C#, requiring the .NET Framework of Microsoft Windows, since Version 1.0 written in C/C++ without managed extensions ^[1]. In February 2005, Fafis played the CCT7 but dropped out early after a dead draw position versus Crafty, which Rafael assumed agreed as draw, was lost on time ^[2]. Fafis 2.0 was infected by a computer worm ^[3], and was compressed, encrypted and obfuscated ^[4], as well as subsequent "clean" versions. The Arena support team around Christopher Conkie, Michael Diosi and Alexander Schmidt did some investigations and found Fafis 2.1 had many suspicious similarities with Crafty ^[5]. Despite the author's denial Fafis is a clone, and his promises to open the source for inspection, which failed to produce the suspected executable ^[6], Fafis was convicted a clone of Crafty ^[7].

Gedeon X,
a Chess Challenger clone ^[1] by Bela Gedeon, which was allowed to play the WMCCC 1983 in Budapest as local entry. According to Frederic Friedel ^[2], the modification was only to the power supply. The machine had a 6502B processor @ 3MHz, 32 KiB ROM, 16 KiB RAM, apparently a Sargon based Chess Challenger by Dan and Kathe Spracklen.

Greif,
a chess program by engine author Michael Ehrig, supported by tester and opening book author Daniel Mehrmann. Greif played the WMCCC 1993 in Munich ^[1] and the IPCCC 1994 and was identified by Rainer Serfling ^[2] at the end of the Clodra chess tournament in November 1994 as a clone of Chrilly Donninger's program Nimzo 2 ^[3]. During a heated Rybka clone discussion in CCC Daniel Mehrmann assured to know nothing about the Greif sources ^[4].

		Gunda-1, a Crafty clone developed by a team of the Gunadarma University, Depok and Jakarta, Indonesia, led by Suryadi Harmanto ^[1] ^[2]. Gunda-1 based on Crafty 9.31 was allowed to play the WMCCC 1996 at Gunadarma along with the "original" Crafty, as a concession of the ICCA to let the host participate with an own program. At the WMCCC players meeting it was agreed that Crafty had to play Gunda-1 in the first round as proposed by tournament director Jaap van den Herik, to avoid possible later issues if it turned out, both programs may fight for the title. Also no other program had to play both. Gunda-1, operated by Dede Liu and Andi Suhendra, won the game from Crafty and finally both programs finished 4th (Crafty) and 5th.

Wishes came true

Excerpt from Ratih Dewanti's tournament report, ICCA Journal, December 1996 ^[4]

Gunadarma University vividly wished not only to take part as a sponsor in the 14th World Microcomputer Chess Tournament, but also as a participant. At first, this seemed an audacious wish, since programming a computer-chess system from scratch requires a great deal of effort. Due to our contacts with the ICCA we were referred to the program CRAFTY (especially to Bob Hyatt). The Gunadarma University was enthusiastic about the possibility that their wish could be fulfilled. So they formed a group of eight persons working on an own chess program based on CRAFTY. The group, called Gunadarma University Expert Team, was led by Professor Suryadi Harmanto, the other members being Haryanto, M. Shofwan A, Avinanta Tarigan, Adang Suhendra, Adrian, Tubagus Maulana, and Windiaprana. The team worked six months on the program.

The specifications of GUNDA-1 are as follows. It is written in ANSI C and Assembly Language, and has been tested and run well in LINUX Slackware version 3.0. In order to improve the execution speed, the kernel of the LINUX operating system has been optimized for the Pentium processor.

In the 14th WMCC, GUNDA-1 used a Pentium Pro 200, and was operated by Dede Liu and Andi Suhendra. GUNDA-1 received a wildcard from the ICCA for participating in the tournament. We were very happy with it and especially with the result. GUNDA-1 finished fifth (tied fourth with its "origin" CRAFTY represented by Tom Crain). A remarkable contest was in the first round when GUNDA-1 played CRAFTY (as was agreed upon beforehand) and won ... its first game in a World Championship. Still, after the tournament we know that there are many things to do to improve the program.

There is no token that can adequately express the International Chess Community's appreciation for the host University, Gunadarma. While one can recognize the founder, Professor Suryadi Harmanto's love of chess and wisdom in building an institution whose programs are bound so tightly with the importance of Information Technology, one can only be impressed by his courage in taking on the challenge of revising the GUNDA-1 chess program to give it local character, while risking all in a competition like this one. The computer-chess community is delighted to accept him into its ranks as a programmer and, hopefully, as a long-time continuing participant in ICCA events. The world needs more risk takers with such vision.

Robert Hyatt

Bob Hyatt 1996 in Jakarta information on the first WMCCC round ^[7]:

There are two Crafty programs there, mine, and 9.31 entered by the Indonesians. This is something that seems wrong to me and I'll take it up with the ICCA later, as this was discussed at length and I thought it was clear that Crafty is Crafty, period. Makes little sense to have two...

The actual Gunda story was pretty fractured at times. Here is what actually happened.

The 1996 event was in Jakarta, being hosted by the university there. The CS chair (perhaps, I am not certain on this) asked David if they could enter a modified Crafty as a participant. David asked me and I replied "Sure. I was going to participate, but if they are interested, that works for me." And I left it at that. But each time the new participant list was published, no "Gunda-1" entry. I sent David/Tony an email and they replied "we have not received an entry from them, do you want to enter yourself?" And I replied yes. I filled out the application, GM Roman Dzhindi had a friend that volunteered to operate AND buy us a pentium-pro box to use. He also bought the airline ticket and set up his room reservation at his own cost. Then at the last minute along came Gunda-1. Now there was a quandary, in that our guy had already bought a non-refundable airline ticket, booked a room, had sent the pentium pro to me to install linux, + crafty, plus 3-4-5 piece endgame tables, and then I had FedEx'ed it on to Jakarta. David promptly contacted me for advice. He did not want to refuse them entry since they were hosting the event, he did not want to exclude the real Crafty after the expenses we had spent, so I suggested they discuss it at the player's meeting, which they did. No one raised an objection after hearing the explanation, and the only stipulation the players wanted was to request that Gunda-1 and Crafty NOT be paired against each other unless it was absolutely unavoidable, for obvious reasons.

It was a silly mistake, but not one anyone would have been very likely to predict, so we made the best of it. Funny thing was the two programs tied for places 4-5, which was not expected. Crafty could certainly have won that event with a little luck, but you would not normally expect both to finish at the same position.

This was also the event where the newly seen "Ruy Lopez - crafty variation" first showed up. I can tell more about that if anyone is interested.

Jaap van den Herik

Jaap van den Herik on Gunda-1 in Augmented Ideas, Editorial ICCA Journal, March 1997 ^[9] , where he was misinformed about Rajah by Valavan Manohararajah ^[10] and later apologized ^[11] :

In the 14th WMCC (Jakarta, 1996), the Indonesian program GUNDA-1 participated, and in the 16th Open Dutch Computer-Chess Championship (Leiden, 1996) the program RAJAH was entered. Both programs were based on Hyatt's world-wide available code of the program CRAFTY. Since both teams gave due credit to CRAFTY as their original source, it is comparable to using ideas from articles while giving appropriate reference. Nevertheless, the question remains to what extent can we prolong the similarity of publications and programs. For articles, we do not allow plagiarism. For algorithms and programs I believe we are in a state of flux. Yet, the researcher who is the originator of the ideas should always be given pride of place.

a WinBoard compliant chess engine by Vladimir Yelin, namesake of the first World Computer Chess Champion, the famous Kaissa, and at times Crafty clone ^[1]. Sergei S. Markoff mentioned Vladimir Yelin also using ideas by Mikhail Botvinnik to determine objects for attack end defence ^[2] ^[3]. In 2004, Kaissa2 evolved to Patriot to become a commercial Arena engine. In May 2005, the new Patriot 2.0 turned out to be a Fruit clone ^[4] ^[5] ^[6], when later investigations revealed the previously assumed innocent ^[7] Patriot 1 aka later Kaissa versions were based on Crafty with many changes. Investigator Alexander Schmidt stated that later versions of Kaissa released after the Patriot disaster still have Crafty traces inside ^[8].

LaGrande,
a chess program by Gabriele Müller as successor of her Crafty clone Voyager. Voyager, LaGrande and its "sister" LaPetite were initially promoted by Frank Quisinsky, who dubbed Voyager an experimental private chess program by Müller ^[1], even after it was exposed as clone in February 1999 ^[2], but later admitted the evidence of cloning ^[3]. LaGrande was the "sister" of the third clone LaPetite, which was according to Quisinsky a much more aggressive and speculative player ^[4].

		Patriot, a WinBoard and UCI compliant chess engine by Vladimir Yelin, and successor of his earlier attempt Kaissa2, a namesake of Kaissa, the first World Computer Chess Champion ^[1]. Patriot 1.x became commercial in early 2004, bundled with Arena distributed by the Gladiator-Shop headed by Frank Quisinsky ^[2] ^[3]. According to the distributor's site, Patriot was improved considerably from March to May 2004 due to better quiescence search, evaluation using mobility tables and implementation of the transposition table ^[4]. In May 2005, after clone suspicions that the new Patriot 2.0 was based on Fruit ^[5] became substantial ^[6] ^[7], the commercial endeavor ended ^[8]. Later investigations revealed the previously assumed innocent ^[9] Patriot 1 and late Kaissas were based on Crafty with many changes ^[10]

Quickstep, (Quick Step)
a German chess computer entered by Klaus Dieter Langer at the WMCCC 1989 in Portorož. The program appeared to be an unauthorized version of the Mephisto Almeria program by Richard Lang ^[1], winner of the previous year's WMCCC 1988 in Almería. Quickstep was a VMEbus system with 68030 processor @ 33 MHz, and 8 MiB of RAM, connected with a small terminal with a 32-character display and keypad to enter moves ^[2].

Sole leader

After five rounds with four consecutive wins versus Why Not 89, Nightmare, Kempelen and Pandix, and the bye, the so far unknown program was the sole leader, and then lost the endgame from later winner and Almería successor Mephisto X aka Mephisto Portoroz. In round 7, versus Marty Hirsch's AI Chess, Quickstep lost due to a hole in the opening book, and the Mephisto team around Ossi Weiner, Richard Lang and book author Jeroen Noomen raised suspicions, because the same line was also inside the Almeria book. After collecting more evidence Hegener & Glaser filed a protest.

Strange facts

Jeroen Noomen as member of the Mephisto team mentioned following facts in a 2003 CCC post ^[3]:

I was a member of the Mephisto team in Portoroz and after a few rounds we found some facts very strange:

We had never heard of Mr. Langer before
Asking him questions, he didn't seem to know anything about chess or computer chess
During the games he was watching everything, except the computerscreen. He didn't seem to be interested in the games at all
A quick glance at his IO showed that the contents of this were exactly the same as Mephisto's
We replayed Quickstep's games on a regular Almeria 32 bit machine and discovered that almost all the moves were identical

At last we informed the ICCA about it and Mr. Langer was requested to show the source code of Quickstep. He didn't and so his program was disqualified. We never heard of him anymore...

Disqualification

During several meetings of the Tournament Directors Jaap van den Herik and Jonathan Schaeffer with Mr. Langer, presenting the Mephisto evidence, Mr. Langer was not able or willing to provide any evidence Quickstep was original. After consulting ICCA President David Levy, Quickstep and Mr. Langer were disqualified from the tournament ^[4].

		Schachcomputer SC 1, VEB Funkwerk Erfurt's first dedicated chess computer species from 1981, build in low quantities of only about 12 to 20 pieces. The SC 1 was merely a prototype kind of a chess computer, to test the performance of their own Z80 clone, the U880 8-bit processor ^[1] . The program wasn't yet an own development ^[2], but a program from the "Enemy of the people", a plain copy of Ron Nelson's program of a Chess Challenger manufactured by Fidelity Electronics ^[3]. Remarkably, its successor, the SC 2, which was produced in higher quantities and exported to the capitalistic "First World" to merit foreign exchanges, still was a slightly modified Ron Nelson program ^[4]^[5].

		Schachcomputer SC 2, a dedicated chess computer manufactured from 1981 until 1983 by VEB Funkwerk Erfurt, in 1983 renamed to VEB Mikroelektronik „Karl Marx“ Erfurt. The SC 2 ran on an 8-bit U880 CPU, which was an unlicensed Z80 clone, and had 9 KB ROM and 1 KB RAM. The chess program was an apparently re-engineered, slightly modified clone ^[1] ^[2] ^[3] of Ron Nelson's program of the Chess Challenger 10 C manufactured by Fidelity Electronics.

Developer Rüdiger Worbs: "The SC2 was the first device manufactured by ten female laborer on the assembly line, they built about 1000". But despite various presentations at trade shows, it did not lead to the desired export. The slightly revised program was stolen by a U.S. inventor, the market is already saturated in the West. In the GDR, only a few hundred items were available over the counter. 2180 East mark costs the electrical brain - about three months' wages for ordinary people. Meanwhile, the "SC2" is considered a "collector's item". At the last auction on the Internet, he went away for 49 Euro.

Scaramanga,
a Clone of Mark Lefler's program Now and "successor" of Almond, both by fake author "Richard Hall" ^[1], an alleged student from University of Michigan. He asked the CSVN via Jan Krabbenbos and Hans Secelle to play the ICT 2010 with Almond as well the DOCCC 2010 with Scaramanga, operated by Hans Secelle who regularly contacted "Richard Hall" ^[2].

Harvey Williamson raised suspicions after Scaramanga was connected from an Indian server at Playchess, and Hans Secelle sent the source code applied to Don Dailey forwarded for confirmation to Mark Lefler. Mark admitted he had naively shared his source code with someone who said he was named "Chinmay" who offered to run Now in a tournament with faster hardware and better compiler, and said he had operated Rybka at ACCA 2008 ^[3].

a RobboLito clone by Johandry Gonzalez Espin. SquarknII was registered for the WCCC 2010 in Kanazawa ^[1], but was convicted as blatant clone and disqualified along with its author ^[2].

		Voyager, the first Crafty clone by Gabriele Müller. Voyager appeared in 1998 and played on Internet Chess Club (ICC), Free Internet Chess Server (FICS), and various private tournaments ^[1] . In February 1999, Robert Hyatt published the findings of his investigation, which showed Voyager was a clone of Crafty. Strings were translated to German, an own Copyright string was given, but otherwise it contained more or less the complete Crafty framework with various tweaks in search, like Null Move Pruning with R = 3 ^[2] and evaluation.
