		AlfilChess, (Alfil Chess, Alfil) a chess program by Enrique Sánchez Acosta, written in C++, first incorporated as chess engine of TotalChess 2000, and subsequently since 2001 commercially released as Alfil Chess I and Alfil Chess 2.2 by Hollywood Publishing ^[1]. Alfil has become a free engine under Windows, compliant with UCI, and under Linux, compliant with the Chess Engine Communication Protocol. More recent versions have a parallel search with multiple threads and are able to probe Nalimov Tablebases ^[2], and were ported to Android ^[3].

C# Engine Project

The C# Engine Project, at first dubbed Alfil 15 and released as open source in 2015, started from Stockfish v5 and various C# ports such as Portfish, and over the time incorporated ideas and knowledge gained from over 10 years of Alfil development, and from other open source engines ^[5]. Alfil 15 was registered for TCEC Season 8, when it was disqualified after its first game versus Pedone, since it could not disable its internal book, not complying with the TCEC rules ^[6]. After that incident, and due to discussions on Alfil's 15 origins in computer chess forums ^[7], the author made these more explicit on September 02, 2015, renamed the program, and invited everyone to collaborate ^[8].

ChessBin.com chess engine is very well documented in a blog format, explaining each source block of the chess engine, identifying it's purpose. Although educational in nature, the engine is used in several software implementations; the most notable as the computer opponent in the online chess system hosted on GeeksWithChess.com as well as LiveChess.info

		ChessMaps, a chess playing program written by Kieran Greer in C#, which applies the Chessmaps Heuristic ^[1] ^[2]. The program requires the .NET Framework and has an own Windows GUI. The ChessMaps manual credits Beowulf for providing the opening book ^[3].

Greer's more recent research on Tree Pruning for New Search Techniques in Computer Games with move chains has been carried out using Chessmaps ^[5]:

The Chessmaps program is still only a prototype program and is missing modules or functions that would be included in a complete program. There is no real knowledge of endgame play, for example, where the program will tend to play more aimlessly and be happy to concede a draw by repetition, in a clearly winning position. On the other hand, in certain middlegame positions where its positional evaluator should work well, it does play strongly. It is still a bit buggy and can produce errors, but the testing and results have been performed under reliable circumstances. So a rough evaluation of playing strength might be a strong club player, although, this is not particularly strong for computer chess programs these days.

		ChessV, an open source engine that plays over 50 chess variants with various board sizes as well as orthodox chess, written by Gregory Strong in C++, released under the GPL v2, first published in 2004 ^[1]. ChessV 0.95 was released in November 2016 ^[2]. ChessV runs under Windows with 32-bit and 64-bit executables available and can run on Linux under Wine. It features an own GUI, but includes also an executable named ChessV_Winboard.exe which allows running ChessV under Winboard. ChessV 2.0, released in March 2017, completely rewritten from scratch ^[3] in C#, is a .NET Framework application, and can run on non-Windows operating systems, such as Linux, using Mono.

ChessV encapsulates the board, position and game related data inside a huge C++ class, with number of files, ranks and squares as member, and specifies a bitboard type accordant to its size, either with 64, 96 or 128 bits. Sliding pieces attacks are generated with rotated bitboards.

		Counter, (Счетчик) an UCI compliant chess engine by Vadim Chizhov, initially written in C# to run under Windows .Net, available since early 2007 ^[1]. Counter 0.8 played a strong CCCCISC 2008 over the board. Counter was then ported to the Go programming language and released in May 2017 as open source at GitHub, dubbed CounterGo ^[2].

Counter C#

According to the sdchess description, Counter is based on bitboards using Pradu Kannan's magic bitboard implementation to generate moves ^[4], while the Counter 1.2 readme claims a hybrid board representation consisting of a 10x12 board and bitboards for pawns ^[5]. Counter applies PVS alpha-beta with transposition table, null move-, delta-, futility- and extended futility pruning, SEE, LMR, check-, mate threat-, passed pawn- and capture extensions, and IID. The evaluation has improved over the time, specially the assessment of a safe king and passed pawns, since version 0.8, lazy evaluation was removed.

CounterGo

CounterGo comes as didactic open source engine written in the Go programming language along with an intuitive source structure. As modern bitboard engine using a dense board definition ^[6], it applies magic bitboards to determine sliding piece attacks. Inside its iterative deepening loop, CounterGo performs a parallel search conform to the young brothers wait concept ^[7] using Goroutines ^[8], with no (longer) PVS but pure alpha-beta with transposition table and null move pruning. CounterGo extends recaptures of pieces, checks and pawns to the 7th rank only in case of positive SEE, while move ordering is enhanced by the killer and history heuristics along with IID and SEE ^[9].

		Dolphin, a WinBoard compliant open source chess program under the terms of the GNU General Public License written in 2009 by Nguyen Viet Huy in C#. Dolphin comes with an own graphical user interface. It uses a 0x88 array and piece lists to represent the board. The search is PVS alpha-beta with transposition table and adaptive nullmove pruning inside an iterative deepening framework. Killer- and history heuristic as well as static exchange evaluation are used to order moves. Evaluation covers material, mobility, various pawn structure features, and king safety through square control. Dolphin played the IOCSC 2010, and the DOCCC 2010 operated by Tessa Pijl.

		FUSc#, an experimental research open source chess engine developed since 2002 by the AI-Game Programming Group ^[1] at the Free University of Berlin, headed by Raúl Rojas. As the name suggests, FUSc# was written in C#. It is compliant to the UCI protocol and able to play online ^[2]. An iterative alpha-beta matrix version gave a promising performance boost, bought by a huge degree of code complexity ^[3].

Description

Jabba uses a hybrid board representation of a 0x88 mailbox and bitboards for pawns ^[4]. It applies PVS alpha-beta with transposition table inside an iterative deepening framework along with null move pruning. It extends checks, pawn moves to the 7th rank, and transitions to pawn endings. Jabba's evaluation might be lazy and considers material imbalances based on material analyses using statistics, mobility, pawn structure, king safety and various piece terms.

Jabba played the CPT 2010 and CPT 2011 Chess Programmers Tournaments over the board, further the WCRCC 2010 and WCRCC 2012 ACCA World Computer Rapid Chess Championships, and the CCT12, CCT13, CCT14 and CCT15 Computer Chess Tournaments.

Description

Move Generation

MadChess applies an incremental move generation, using the C# yield statement ^[7] ^[8] ^[9] ^[10] ^[11] using incrementally updated list of attackers for any rank, file, diagonal, or anti-diagonal.

Search

MadChess performs a principal variation search along with transposition table, killer and history heuristic, null move pruning and late move reductions inside an iterative deepening framework with aspiration. It eliminates all reductions and lazy evaluation along the principal variation.

Evaluation

The evaluation might be lazy with respect to bounds, and otherwise uses a tapered evaluation on game phase between speculative computed middlegame and endgame scores, considering piece-square tables, mobility, pawn structure, and king safety and various piece evaluation terms.

Board Representation

Like Sinobyl, NoraGrace relies on bitboards, and further has an 8x8 mailbox. It uses magic bitboards to determine sliding piece attacks - factors were calculated from sparse 64-bit randoms. BitScan is implemented via 32-bit De Bruijn multiplication to conditionally branch on low and high dwords. Bitboard serialization applies the C# yield statement ^[5] , which is further used in various move generation routines. NoraGrace's square mapping has ranks from 8 to 1 mapped to 0-7 at the big-end over files from 'a' to 'h', square zero is a8:

Search

NoraGrace applies negamax alpha-beta with transposition table and quiescence search inside an iterative deepening framework with aspiration windows, enhanced by adaptive null move pruning with verification search in the endgame, extensions if SEE > 0 for checks and pawns to 7th rank, futility pruning and LMR.

Evaluation

Evaluation takes game phases into account, using a tapered eval along with PhasedScore objects, interpreting the low and high 32-bit double words of a 64-bit long as two SIMD integers of an endgame and opening score . Beside other features, NoraGrace considers material, piece-square tables, king safety, cached pawn structure and mobility.

Description

#Chess uses an 8x8 board maintained by a negamax alpha-beta search with transposition table inside an iterative deepening loop. Evaluation is primarily due to material balance (MB) - a positional bonus based on piece-square tables might be skipped by lazy evaluation if MB is at least 50 centipawns outside the alpha-beta window. #Chess features a peft and divide command ^[2].
