		Anatoli, a WinBoard compliant chess engine by Martin Giepmans, first released in April 2008 and freely available via Leo Dijksman's WBEC Ridderkerk site ^[1]. Like Martin's earlier engine SpiderChess, Anatoli is written in Delphi. Martin named it after Anatoly Karpov (Dutch transliteration Anatoli Karpov) ^[2] because he admired Karpov's subtle playing style and had the hope he might teach Anatoli to play a bit like Karpov, though ^[3] ^[4].

Anechka, (Анечка, Anya)
an UCI compliant chess engine by Sergei Nefedov, written in Delphi. The program was developed incrementally, starting with board representation, generation, make and unmake move, alpha-beta search, and rudimentary evaluation, published in 2003, further improving in subsequent versions. Version 0.05 disabled checks in quiescence search and had a slightly modified evaluation function, yielding in a significant increase in playing strength on short time controls ^[1]. Latest version is Anechka 0.08, released in July 2006 ^[2]. This version played the CCCCISC 2008 in Moscow with 3½/7, and the IOPCCC 2008 in Łódź.

Atomystica,
a chess program which plays only the variant Atomic Chess ^[1], using the rules from FICS ^[2]. The development of the program started in April 2014. The program, written in Delphi, has its own GUI, but can also be operated via the Chess Engine Communication Protocol with WinBoard. But the Program do not support all functions of the protocol.

Description

The program uses piece-lists and a 10x12 board for the internal board representation. It applies alpha-beta inside an iterative deepening framework, further using the killer moves, relative history heuristic, null-move heuristic, transposition tables and some other ideas for move ordering. Under his name, the program plays on FICS with a rating from 2300 to 2400 points. On the server Atomystica uses an opening book with about 170,000 positions and some as many moves, separated in a white and a black book. The opening books were automatically generated out of the topgames played on FICS.

BBchess,
a chess program by Bernard Brioit. The engine part is written in Pascal, its own GUI in Delphi. BBchess uses the 0x88 Board representation and performs an improved MTD(f) search on top of iterative deepening and applies Null move pruning with a depth reduction of 3. It uses two transposition tables, and supports the Thompson endgame databases with three and four pieces ^[1].

		Bestia, a Chess Engine Communication Protocol compliant chess engine written by George Lyapko in Pascal and compiled with Delphi ^[1], first released in July 2000 ^[2], with executables to run under Windows, and more recently, to x86-64 Mac OS ^[3]. Beside the transposition table, Bestia features a pawn hash table, and is able to learn from its failures ^[4] ^[5]. 		Blikskottel, a Chess Engine Communication Protocol compatible chess engine written (in an extremely part-time fashion) in C by Adam Oellermann. Blikskottel is an Afrikaans slang term (meaning something like 'blighter' or 'rascal'), but Blikskottel's development began in England, and Blikskottel is now resident in Scotland.

Description

Blikskottel is a simple bitboard-based alpha-beta searcher. The original version was written in Delphi, intended to be an entry into a chess programming competition among a group of programmers. After the other programmers failed to produce entries, Adam decided to continue anyway. The Delphi version was quickly replaced with C code (originally developed in Microsoft Visual C++, but since being ported to Linux just about anything can compile Blikskottel now); much of this was written while on the train or watching TV, which perhaps accounts somewhat for the engine's lack of performance. Blikskottel's strength tends to make sudden jumps forward during brief spurts of intense interest in chess programming by the author, which then fade away as he realises just how awful the codebase is getting to be to work with; then, poor Blikskottel languishes - sometimes for years at a time.

There's a TODO list in the Blikskottel source code which is full of interesting ideas. Perhaps one day Blikskottel may be able to advance into the realms of the mediocre! Blikskottel plays as 'skottel' on FICS, from time to time. The 0.8 version maintains a FICS Elo rating of about 2000.

		Booot, an UCI compliant open source chess program written in Delphi 6 by Alex Morozov. Booot determines sliding piece attacks with rotated bitboards and applies PVS with all common search improvements such as null move pruning, late move reductions and IID. Booot 6.1, released in October 2016, comes with lazy SMP and a completely redesigned evaluation function ^[1]. Booot played the 1st Computer Chess Championship of CIS Countries, the CCT9 and CCT10, and the CPT 2010 and CPT 2011, the WCCC 2011, the ICT 2013, the IGT 2015, where it became runner-up behind Pedone, and the IGT 2016, again second place behind Chiron.

Celes, (31337)
a chess engine by Johan Hutting and at times by Marcel Veldhuizen, written in Delphi and supporting the Chess Engine Communication Protocol ^[1], and since version 0.70 the UCI protocol ^[2]. Celes was initially called 31337, but that's not a valid ICC and/or FICS name, so Celes was used ^[3]. It applies alpha-beta inside an iterative deepening framework with aspiration windows, further using the killer and null-move heuristic. 31337/Celes played three CSVN tournaments over the board, the ICT 2001, DOCCC 2002 and the ICT 2003, as well as four CCT Tournaments, CCT3, CCT4, CCT5 and CCT6.

		Critter, an UCI compatible cross-platform chess engine by Richard Vida, executables freely available for personal use to run under Windows, Linux, Android and Mac OS ^[1] . Starting in late 2008, Critter was first written in Object Pascal compiled with Delphi, now available as open source engine ^[2] ^[3] , and was ported to C / C++ in 2009 ^[4] . It consistently evolved through various board representations from 0x88 to bitboards, as acknowledged by Richard Vida, also incorporating ideas from strong open source programs like Ippolit ^[5] , to a world class engine which achieved top five of most engine rating lists ^[6] .In 2012, Critter had its over the board debut at the ICT 2012, where it became strong runner-up behind the Rybka cluster.

Description

Critter applies a principal variation search with aspiration windows, null move pruning ^[8] and other state of the art forward pruning, reduction and extension techniques, such as the Botvinnik-Markoff extensions ^[9] . It can search in parallel with up to eight threads ^[10] , supports Gaviota tablebases ^[11] , and is able to play Chess960 ^[12] . Critter features a tapered eval with a score pair class and overloaded operators ^[13] ^[14] , and blockage detection in late endgames ^[15] .

		Crux, a chess engine written by László Szalai in Delphi. It runs under Windows either in console mode or with an own GUI, and as first Hungarian WinBoard program ^[1] and also supports the Chess Engine Communication Protocol. The search is plain alpha-beta improved by null move pruning and the killer heuristic. Crux played the ICT 2001 and various Hungarian Chessprogram Open, where it won the MASPV 2002. Crux' opening book is edited by Pandix book author Csaba Szûts ^[2].

		Delfi, a strong WinBoard and UCI compliant chess engine written by Fabio Cavicchio in Pascal with x86 inline assembly, compiled with Delphi, first released in August 2001 ^[1]. Delfi is distributed commercially within a software suite as Delfi Trainer, along with an own "2.5D" chess GUI, a ergonomic 2D graphics board in Bird's-eye view and pieces with 3D-effect, and a position trainer ^[2] . The pure Winboard/UCI engine with some restrictions is further available for free. Formerly an open source engine, Fabio closed the sources past the still available version 2.51, which has a license allowing modification for personal use ^[3].

Description

Delfi uses the vector attacks approach of a board representation with a 16x16 board, combining the property of the 10x12 board with its surrounding ranks and files with the property that a square difference uniquely maps a vector in the Chebyshev vector space of a chessboard. Delfi applies PVS alpha-beta with null move-, futility- and history pruning. Dual core processors are supported using a parallel search with a shared hash table.

Tournament Play

Delfi won all the six Campionato Italiano per Programmi Scacchistici (CIPS) championships it played, from 2002 until 2007, and further won the Chess Computer Cup 2005, and 2008. At the WCCC 2006 in Turin, Delfi performed with respectable 5½/11.

Delphil,
a WinBoard and UCI compliant chess engine written by Philippe Fabiani in Pascal using Delphi 7 ^[1] , first released in April 2004. Delphil started its life as Delphi port of Tom Kerrigan's TSCP, and in 2009, Delphil still owned about 80% of TSCP's code base with move generation and search almost identical. Most changes were done in evaluation, further a tranposition table, various extensions and null move pruning were added ^[2] . Delphil 3.2, released on September 28, 2014, applies a parallel search with up to 32 processors simultaneously, and is able to probe Nalimov Tablebases ^[3] .

an UCI compliant derivative of Steinwender's and Donninger's Basic program Minimax, ported to Delphi and further enhanced by Martin Bauer with piece-lists, transposition table, null move pruning, repetition detection, fifty-move rule, and knowledge about the rule of the square ^[1]. While the Minimax Delphi port is open source ^[2], DelphiMax is available as Windows executable.

EveAnn,
a WinBoard compliant chess engine written by Andres Valverde in Delphi, first released in December 2005 ^[1]. EveAnn started its life when Andres translated Pham Hong Nguyen's FirstChess from C to Pascal, and made it play legal chess. He further improved the program after studying Bruce Moreland's site on chess programming topics, got several ideas from Tom Kerrigan's TSCP and Ed Schröder's How Rebel plays chess. The engine is dedicated to Andres' daughters Eve and Ann ^[2]. EveAnn played the CCT8 in 2006, the CCT9 and under the handle DelTomateX, the WCRCC 2007, the First Annual ACCA World Computer Rapid Chess Championship.

Gustav,
a program for solving orthodox chess problems by Olaf Jenkner, written in Delphi ^[1], program texts and manual available in German only. Initially developed since 1990 for the MS-DOS operating system in Pascal, Gustav was later ported and improved to run under Windows. Gustav is able to solve checkmate, stalemate, helpmate, helpstalemate, selfmate and selfstalemate in N moves. It has a dedicated GUI with various dialogs to edit positions, to load and save FEN or proprietary GST-files of problem collections, and to control the search. Beside brute-force search accelerated by a transposition table, several automatic or user defined constraints such as number of escape squares for the checked king, allow shallow and deep searches of up to 170 moves (339 plies). The longest for Gustav solvable problem so far has 163 moves, a composition by Ottó Titusz Bláthy ^[2]:

		Ikarus, a chess engine by Munjong and Muntsin Kolss, written in Delphi. The development started in January 1997, and in May 2000 Ikarus was released as Young Talent by ChessBase ^[1] . Ikarus is the German spelling of Icarus from Greek mythology, with his attempt to escape from Crete by means of wings that his father, Daedalus, constructed from feathers and wax. However, the chess engine Ikarus is not related with the internet chess client Icarus by Random Software ^[2] . Ikarus played three World Computer Chess Championships so far, the WCCC 1999 in Paderborn, the WCCC 2002 in Maastricht, and the WCCC 2006 in Turin, where Ikarus managed to win the Blitz tournament, awarded by the title of World Computer Speed-Chess Champion. Able to play Chess960, Ikarus participated at the two open Livingston Chess960 Computer World Championships, fifth place in 2005 and even third in 2006, and was qualified to play the Chess960CWC 2009 where only four engines competed in the final ^[3] ^[4] . Ikarus regularly played the International Paderborn Computer Chess Championships. The debut in 1999 with a shared second place was already promising. Further, Ikarus played various CCT Tournaments, and except one occasion at CCT6 with severe internet access problems due to a dying router ^[5] , it most often played for the top rankings.

Development of Ikarus started in January 1997 when our previous program, named "BasicChess", reached the 64kb memory limit of Borland Pascal 7.0 and its source code had grown completely cryptic. The 32-bit language Borland Delphi 2.0 allowed us to finally use hash tables and the next year or so saw us implement a graphical user interface and most of the usual standard search heuristics (null move pruning, history heuristic, search extensions etc.) as well as some advanced data structures such as a pawn-king hash table.

From March 1998 on a Winboard-compatible version has been autoplaying a variety of computer opponents. Ikarus also got a new hand-crafted opening book. Over Christmas 1998 we added support for the endgame databases created by Eugene Nalimov; so our program contains a port of the probing code provided by the author.
