		Abyss, a Chinese Chess program by Chun Ye and Tony Marsland, written in C under Unix aka SunOS. A X Window GUI was written in C++ by Haiying Wang ^[1]. The program was subject of Chun Ye's 1992 master thesis at University of Alberta ^[2] on the topic of selectivity and extension heuristics in the domain of Chinese Chess. Not only Ye's advisor, Tony Marsland, contributed to the development of the program, but also Don Beal - at that time visiting professor at University of Alberta - in particular concerning null move quiescence search. Abyss participated at all three Computer Olympiads which took place in Maastricht, winning the gold medal (shared) at the 3rd Computer Olympiad, 1991, while the 1999 version played in 2001 and 2002, respectively.

Abyss' ICGA Tournaments

Description

The framework of Abyss ^[4] was based on the Western experimental Chess program Parabelle by Fred Popowich and Tony Marsland ^[5].

Move Generation

Abyss' board is represented as Mailbox - a one-dimensional array of 90 computer words, indexed by 0 .. 89. Pieces are encoded by ±1 for red and black pawns until ±7 for red and black kings, empty squares are represented by zero. To detect the edges of the board and palace during move generation, board arrays of pre-computed 12-bit direction masks consisting of four groups for each orthogonal direction of 3 bits each are utilized. Only the empty intersection of the move direction with the mask of the target square indicates target on board or inside palace, followed by piece specific tests to generate pseudo legal moves or to continue a direction loop for rook or cannon. Detection of strictly legal moves, i.e. it does not expose the own king in check, or does not oppose both kings on the same file with no pieces intervening, is delayed until the move is actually made for efficiency reasons - since not all generated pseudo legal moves are examined.

Search

The search procedure of Abyss was subject of Chun Ye's thesis concerning selectivity, in particular extensions which are combined in various experiments, and further elaborated in two additional papers along with Tony Marsland ^[6] ^[7]. Abyss already featured recursive null move pruning with depth reduction of 1 ^[8], and further Don Beal's null move quiescence search ^[9]. A piece evading move extension was motivated by threat detection concerning the complicated repetition rules of Chinese Chess.

		Alarm, (Deamon) a WinBoard compliant chess engine by Benny Antonsson and Erik Robertsson, written in C++. Alarm, the Diabolic Chess Engine ^[1], was first released in July 2003 ^[2], and was first mentioned in 2001 formerly called Deamon ^[3]. Alarm played four CCT Tournaments from 2003 to 2006, the CCT5, CCT6, CCT7 and the CCT8.

		Amy, a Chess Engine Communication Protocol aka XBoard compliant open source chess program under the GNU General Public License by Thorsten Greiner, written in C. Its development already started in 1993 on the Amiga ^[1], and continued on UNIX platforms, in particular FreeBSD ^[2]. Amy 0,6 was ported to Windows for Winboard by Dann Corbit in early 2000 ^[3]. Amy applies ABDADA ^[4] inside a NegaScout framework ^[5] as parallel search algorithm, further using fractional ply extensions aka the SEX Algorithm , Null Move Pruning, and Extended Futility Pruning . Amy played the WMCCC 1995 in Paderborn and various International Paderborn Computer Chess Championships.

		Amyan, a chess engine written by Antonio Dieguez running under Windows, compliant to the Chess Engine Communication Protocol aka WinBoard, and the Universal Chess Interface (UCI). Amyan was first released in 2000, the still available Amyan 1.522 Version from 2002 has an own GUI. The program is written in C++ ^[1], a ported Java applet is able to run in a Web browser using a Java virtual machine ^[2]. Amyan played the CCT4, CCT5 and CCT6 CCT Tournaments, and became the First Annual ACCA Americas' Computer Chess Champion at ACCA 2006, to further play the ACCA 2009. At the 4th Chess Computer Cup 2008 in Carugate, Italy, Amyan was tied with winner DanaSah, both with 5/6 and also equal sum of opponent scores, but Amyan played the draw versus Chiron in round 2, DanaSah in round 5 gaining higher cumulative score.

		AnMon, a chess program by Christian Barreteau, one of the first engines which supported WinBoard aka the Chess Engine Communication Protocol, later also UCI. AnMon was available as Young Talent by ChessBase running under the Fritz6 GUI ^[1] , and is Arena partner engine ^[2] . It is a tactically very strong MTD(f) searcher. AnMon participated at various French Computer Chess Championships and had its debut at the FCCC 1995, further the WMCCC 1997 in Paris, and multiple Massy French Programmers Tournaments, winning Massy 2000, Massy 2005 and Massy 2006.

The program AnMon (half ANgel, half deMON) is written in C and run under Windows NT. It was developed as a hobby for 8 years. AnMon participated in the 1995, and 1996 French Microcomputer Chess Championship. It is based on MTD(f) and uses null-move pruning, selective extensions, transposition tables, killer heuristic, and quiescence search. AnMon is a tactical program.

AnMon uses an opening book containing about 100.000 positions. It was established by the program. AnMon search about 50.000 nodes per second on a Pentium 2 at 233 MHz.

		Belzebub, a WinBoard compliant open source chess engine written by Radosław Kamowski in Java, released in May 2002 as free chess game for mobile phones ^[1] ^[2]. Belzebub played the first and second Polish Computer Chess Championship. After finishing last at the PCCC 2002, Belzebub became runner-up of the uniform category at the PCCC 2003 behind Tytan.

Etymology

Belzebub is the Polish diction of Beelzebub or Baalzebûb, Arabic: بعل الذباب‎, Ba‘al az-Zubab, literally "Lord of the Flies", a Semitic deity that was worshiped in the Philistine city of Ekron. In later Christian and Biblical sources, Beelzebub is referred to as another name for Devil ^[4] ^[5] ^[6]. In Christian demonology, classified by Peter Binsfeld in Tractatus de confessionibus maleficorum & Sagarum an et quanta fides iis adhibenda sit, 1589 ^[7], Beelzebub is one of the seven Princes of Hell ^[8] associated with gluttony, one of the seven deadly sins. Gluttony also occurs in chess ^[9] or even more in computer chess with basically material based evaluation, i.e. grabbing unimportant pawns with the queen, ignoring development and king safety.

Description

Search

Belzebub uses plain 8x8 board arrays, and applies alpha-beta with null move pruning inside an iterative deepening framework with aspiration windows. Move ordering considers the principal variation from previous iteration maintained in a triangular PV-table, MVV-LVA for captures and killer- and history heuristic otherwise.

Repetitions

Like TSCP, Belzebub uses following algorithm to detect repetitions, credited to John Stanback, originated from SCP and his GNU Chess versions ^[10]. However, it may detect false repetitions in case of exchanging two unequal pieces ^[11]. Further, the routine keeps the garbage collector busy by allocating the integer array each call, even if the fifty move counter is less or equal three.

		Bestia, a Chess Engine Communication Protocol compliant chess engine written by George Lyapko in Pascal and compiled with Delphi ^[1], first released in July 2000 ^[2], with executables to run under Windows, and more recently, to x86-64 Mac OS ^[3]. Beside the transposition table, Bestia features a pawn hash table, and is able to learn from its failures ^[4] ^[5]. Bestia participated at three Hungarian Chessprogram Open, and won two times operated by Gábor Szõts, the MASPV 2001 and the MASPV 2003, both with a 100% score.

Blitz Monster was an experimental version of Novag's Super Constellation or its successor Constellation Expert ^[1] ^[2] by David Kittinger, competing with three entries at the WMCCC 1985 in Amsterdam. During the Hong Kong human Blitz tournament March 1984, Super Constellation got 19/28 only playing Black, with 5 points versus International Masters in the 2355 to 2474 range, and was spontaneously called Blitz Monster ^[3].

		Bringer (Der Bringer), a Chess Engine Communication Protocol compatible chess program with its own GUI running under Windows, developed by Gerrit Reubold ^[1]. Bringer applies check and recapture extensions, and further extends to detect perpetual checks, on pushing passers to 6th or 7th rank, if there is only one move, and on severe threats. It also did some negative extension, aka pruning and razoring ^[2] .

		Bruja, a WinBoard compatible chess engine by Dan Honeycutt, written in C++ and first released in March 2004 ^[1] . In the program's readme file, Dan Honeycutt states that Bruja would never had come to be without the contributions of others, and credits Adrien Regimbald, Bruce Moreland, Robert Hyatt, Carlos del Cacho, and Ed Schröder with their respective programs and descriptions as source of inspiration ^[2] . A stripped version of Bruja, called Simon, was published as open source engine ^[3] .

Description

Bruja has a bitboard infrastructure, and uses rotated bitboards to determine sliding piece attacks. It performs strictly legal move generation.

Search

Bruja applies PVS with transposition table inside an iterative deepening fractional ply framework in conjunction with null move pruning, singular, recapture and passed pawn extensions.

Evaluation

Bruja's evaluation initializes attack tables as described in Evaluation in REBEL by Ed Schröder ^[5] , to do hanging piece and static exchange evaluation, and to apply progressive king safety evaluation. Further, Bruja has some pawn structure knowledge and applies piece-square tables ^[6] .

Etymology

Bruja is the Spanish word for Witch and can mean some worse things depending on context ^[7]. The development of Bruja has started on Friday, October 31, 2003, during the Halloween storm when major flares erupted on the Sun with heavy influence on the Earth ^[8] and spectacular aurora with green phantom “northern lights” seen as far south as Texas, Georgia and Florida ^[9].

		DarkThought (Dark Thought), a chess program by Ernst A. Heinz, Peter Gillgasch and Markus Gille from the University of Karlsruhe. The development of DarkThought started in 1993, when Heinz and Gillgasch founded a computer-chess group to write a chess program using rotated bitboards ^[1] . In 1994, Markus Gille joined the team ^[2] , and Peter Gillgasch left the DarkThought team in April 1996 ^[3] .

1995

Dark Thought is a brute-force program employing sophisticated move ordering techniques and search extensions backed by a selective quiescence search. On a DEC 3000-600 (175Mhz Alpha 21064 CPU, 64MB RAM) Dark Thought visits up to 60,000 nodes per second and reaches a non-selective, brute-force search depth of at least 8 plies in 1 minute. Its opening book contains 250,000 positions. On-line access to Thompson's endgame databases is handled by a greatly enhanced version of the public domain software by Beuckens and Hoekstra. Peter Gillgasch, the main brain behind the chess engine, wrote a prototype version of Dark Thought in Pascal in 1992.

Today the program compiles and runs from the same ANSI C source files on a variety of platforms. Markus Gille and Ernst Heinz are responsible for fine-tuning the evaluation function and databases and Peter Gillagasch still maintains the chess engine. During the World Championships, Darkthought will run on the most powerful DEC Alpha workstation available.

DarkThought is a bitboard-based chess program developed at the University of Karlsruhe that has successfully participated in all world championships since 1995. On a 500MHz DEC Alpha-21164a with 128MB RAM, DarkThought routinely reaches speeds of 200K nps in the middlegame while peaking at over 650K nps in the endgame.

DarkThought is a sophisticated alpha-beta searcher written in ANSI-C that uses PVS/NegaScout with state-of-the-art enhancements like futility pruning, internal iterative deepening, dynamic move ordering (killer+history heuristic), recursive null move pruning, selective extensions, interior-node recognizers, and interior-node endgame database access.

DarkThought is a full-blown 64-bit chess program based on the bitboard technology. It was developed at the Institute for Program Structures and Data Organization (University of Karlsruhe, Germany) and has successfully participated in all ICCA world championships since 1995. On a 767MHz KryoTech Alpha-21164a with 256MB RAM, DarkThought easily reaches speeds of 350K nps in the middle game while peaking at over 1M nps in the endgame.

DarkThought is a sophisticated alpha-beta searcher written in ANSI-C that uses PVS/NegaScout with state-of-the-art enhancements like various hash tables, normal and extended futility pruning, internal iterative deepening, dynamic move ordering (history+killer heuristic), recursive null-move pruning, selective extensions, and interior-node recognizers (incl. access to endgame databases).

Description

Board Representation

Diablo is a 0x88 engine with piece-lists to determe vector attacks by 0x88 square difference. It performs pseudo-legal move generation and keeps an attack table per ply - initialized once per node during evaluation, which later speeds up in check detection and static exchange evaluation by lookup.

Search

The search is PVS alpha-beta inside the fractional ply iterative deepening framework without aspiration. The depth-preferred transposition table based on Zobrist hashing is used in the main search only. Beside quiescence, selectivity is due to futility pruning near the tips, null move pruning combined with mate threat extensions, and further fractional extensions for single replies, check, passed pawn to 7th rank and queening. Move ordering takes PV-move, MVV/LVA plus fast SEE for captures, two killers and the history heuristic into account. Internal iterative deepening is applied in case of PV-nodes if no move was found in the transposition table.

Evaluation

Evaluation considers material with piece-square tables, bishop pair, development, center control, mobility of bishops and rooks, in particular considering trapped rooks, rook on open file and on 7th rank. Pawn structure evaluation focuses on passed pawns and further punishes backward and doubled pawns. King safety terms pay attention to an exposed king and pawn shield. Appropriate scores are aggregated in opening and endgame accumulators and finally, if the sum of material is below some late endgame threshold, tapered by the current game phase aka sum of material.

		Fidelity Phantom, a series of robot type dedicated chess computers by Fidelity Electronics with a 6502 program by Dan and Kathe Spracklen, released in three models since 1988, the normal Phantom (model 6100), and the talking Chesster Phantom (model 6124) and Chesster Phantom “Eyeball” (model 6126, “Hi I’m Chesster. How about a nice game of chess ...”) ^[1]. The Fidelity Phantom was basically a re-launch of the 1982 Milton Bradley Phantom with a Spracklen program within 64 KiB of ROM. Sidney Samole had bought the rights on the Robot from Milton Bradley International Inc.. After the acquisition of Fidelity Electronics by Hegener & Glaser in 1989, the same computer was sold under the new brand name Mephisto Phantom ^[2].

		Ghost, a Chess Engine Communication Protocol compatible, free chess engine written in C++ by Philipp Claßen, supported by his brother Michael Claßen ^[1] . The name was taken from the name of Wolf Larsen's seal-hunting schooner in the novel The Sea-Wolf by Jack London. Ghost started its life in about 2000 as subject of a school project, the first version appeared in early 2001, playing online at Internet Chess Club ^[2] , and later in rating list tournaments such as CCRL ^[3] . Subsequent versions were Ghost 1, Ghost 2, and Ghost 3. Executables are available for Windows and Linux platforms. Likely, the current Ghost is bitboard based, due to the much faster 64-bit executable.
The Ghost ^[4]

Ghost 1

Ghost 1 performed NegaScout, IID, killer- and history heuristics, recursive null move pruning with depth reduction of 3, razoring and futility pruning, and a unique technique to detect perpetual checks. It further used the oracle approach of pre-scanned piece-square tables at the root ^[5] .

Ghost 2

The second version, first released in 2003, is a MTD(f) searcher, further utilizing late move reductions, adaptive null move pruning with R of 2 or 3 plies, ETC, and a unique pin detection extension. Ghost 2 has a safer perpetual check detection than Ghost 1, and usus local history counters ^[6] .

Ghost 3

Still using MTD(f), the search has been rewritten from scratch to support parallelism using work stealing provided by the Threading Building Blocks library. The stable version 3.1 was released on May 30, 2017 ^[7].

		Gothmog, a Chess Engine Communication Protocol and UCI compliant closed source chess engine by Tord Romstad. Gothmog was a MTD(f) searcher ^[1] , and according to its self-critical author seemed to have degenerated into a highly complicated random move generator ^[2] , which further was big, horrendously complicated, buggy, and has almost completely unreadable source code. In 2004, Tord almost resigned to continue working on Gothmog in favour to his new engine Glaurung ^[3].

		Ktulu, a strong commercial UCI and WinBoard compatible chess engine by Rahman Paidar distributed by Lokasoft. Ktulu has a sophisticated evaluation - King safety and passed pawn evaluation, completely rewritten in version 6.2, are responsible for its dangerous attacking style with strong tactical and positional play. Further, some unsafe pruning algorithms were replaced with more sound methods ^[1]. Ktulu played four CSVN tournaments over the board, the Leiden DOCCC 2005, DOCCC 2008, ICT 2009 and DOCCC 2009, the CCT10, CCT11 and CCT12 online tournamets, and the WCRCC 2007, the first ACCA World Computer Rapid Chess Championship.

		Mephisto was a family of dedicated chess computers, produced and traded by Hegener & Glaser since 1980, starting with Mephisto I-III by Elmar Henne and Thomas Nitsche. In 1985 Richard Lang became primary Mephisto programmer. All his Mephisto programs were written in 68000 Assembly ^[1] . They competed in various World- and World Microcomputer Chess Championships as well as Computer Olympiad and ACM North American Computer Chess Championship from 1985 until 1993, most often operated by Richard Lang himself and/or opening book author and chess advisor Ossi Weiner. It was in 1994 when Eric Winkler, CEO of Saitek Ltd., acquired Hegener & Glaser to continue the Mephisto trademark, but no longer with programs of Richard Lang, who had developed Chess Genius for the PC market to persist his long term collaboration with Ossi Weiner until 2003.

WMCCC 1993

At the WMCCC 1993 the Mephisto Wundermaschine (Miracle Machine) ^[5] ^[6], running Genius on an internal 80486 PC, won the Manufacturers Group and the playoff versus Software Champion Hiarcs for the title of the World Micro Absolute Champion.

		Mephisto was a family of dedicated chess computers, produced and traded by Hegener & Glaser since 1979 with programs of Elmar Henne and Thomas Nitsche. Short after winning the World Microcomputer Chess Champion title at WMCCC 1984 in Glasgow (shared), Hegener & Glaser abandoned the collaboration with Henne and Nitsche ^[1], and started to work with Richard Lang in continuing the Mephisto brand name, later also with programs of other professional chess programmers like Frans Morsch, Ulf Rathsman, Ed Schröder and Johan de Koning.

The Mephisto 3-Projekt

History

The Mephisto project started with an ordinary 2 line classified column "...we are looking for a chess programmer ... "
by Mr. Horváth, which was discovered by Elmar Henne, who contacted his fellow student Thomas Nitsche from Technical University of Munich, who was already a well known chess programmer. Nitsche and Henne soon founded their own company P1 GmbH to focus on computer chess. When Mr. Horváth sold the whole stuff to Hegener & Glaser, a four year collaboration started in 1980.

Mephisto I, II

The mighty Mephisto I and II chess computers with their unique Briquette design ran on the RCA 1802 8-bit CMOS processor with 6 KiB of a 8KiB ROM and one KiB of RAM, the Mephisto II, released in 1981, doubled the memory sizes. The opening book was supplied by Ossi Weiner ^[3]. The programs were based on Nitsche's former program Orwell - a mixture of Shannon Type A and Type B strategy. The first plies of a brute-force alpha-beta search were extended by a selective layer of plausible moves ^[4], no quiescence search, but SOMA like exchange evaluation ^[5].

Mephisto III

CDL

The new Mephisto III program was written in Compiler Description Language CDL2 for high abstraction with chess pattern terms, but only 1.5-2.0 times slower than assembly. It was further possible to compile the program for different target processors. While the default Mephisto III Briquette model as well the first modular Mephisto MM I, first released in 1983, still had an 8-bit RCA CMOS processor, now with 32 KiB ROM and 4 KiB RAM, the Mephisto III-S and Mephisto Excalibur were shipped with Motorola's 68000 16-bit processor. Mephisto III-S won the the World Microcomputer Chess Champion title at WMCCC 1984 in Glasgow (shared with three other computers) ^[6].

The Mephisto 3-Projekt

The programs of Henne and Nitsche were famous for their very small and selective "humanlike" search trees ^[7] ^[8] . Translated quote from Das Mephisto 3-Projekt ^[9] :

MEPHISTO 3 divides the decision tree into 3 sections

Utopian moves (good, if the opponent does not do anything): A position occurs in a depth of approximately 1-3. The beginning of a combination. Nearly every move promising somehow is selected, even if the probability of success is quite small. Humans call some of these moves sacrifices.
Optimistic moves (good, if the opponent has only the second-best answer): The combination reached a depth of 4-8. Only moves with a probability hit rate larger than 30% are selected. ON BEHALF are this moves, which attack heavy pieces, threaten check, etc. these moves are however no sacrifices.
Realistic moves (good, if the opponent selects the best countermove): The position occurs in depths greater than 8. Only clear completions are examined. I.e. the program does not attack no more on suspicion, but pursues moves with high hit rate. To bring i.e. an attacked piece into security, so that the piece is really safe and not bound or overloaded.
