		Battle Chess, a chess program, famous for its animated move and specially capture sequences in 3D mode, released for various home and personal computer platforms as well as video game consoles, beside others for Apple II, Commodore 64, Commodore Amiga, Atari ST, IBM PC, Apple Macintosh, Acorn Archimedes, 3DO and Nintendo Entertainment System. The game was developed by a team around Brian Fargo and Michael Quarles, including Jay Patel, Bruce Schlickbernd, and Todd Camasta ^[1], released in 1988 by Fargo's company Interplay ^[2] soon after ending the relationship with Electronic Arts ^[3].

		BB, Christophe Jolly's first chess program running under MS-DOS on a x86 PC. BB participated at the WMCCC 1990 in Lyon, and the WMCCC 1993 in Munich, and is forerunner of Christophe's later program Techno Chess aka KnightX. Whether the program's name refers to its internal board representation, for instance as acronym for Bitboards, or the hexadecimal number 0xBB, decimal 187 and sum of three or nine consecutive prime numbers, and product of two primes as well, for a 17x11 vector attacks approach, to Bébé or something else, is not known so far by the editor.

Belofte,
a chess engine written in C by Yves De Billoëz and released under the GPL license v2. Belofte is a console application, but supports the Chess Engine Communication Protocol aka WinBoard/XBoard protocol.

Features

The engine supports Winboard v1 and v2 protocol alongside the Belofte protocol. The engine also supports EPD test sets and can be run with initialization files. Games are saved in PGN format. PGN files can be converted into an opening book. Internally, Belofte keeps a two-dimensional 8x8 board performing pure negamax alpha-beta so far with a once estimated depth rather than iterative deepening ^[1].

History

Development started in 2005 and version 0.2.x made appearance on freechess.org chess server and in source code. At that time, it was released with a custom license (but still free for the open source community). Versions 0.3 till 0.6 were converted to C++ and developed under windows but compilation on other platforms failed. Source code for those versions is available. Look for the branch in the source repository. In 2017, the old version was re-released under GPL license and a new version 0.9.x is making its appearance. It is a branch from the 0.2 release and gradually, all changes from the 0.3+ branches will be included.

Rating

The engine performs currently at 1000-1200 Elo. In some tournaments, it achieved around 1500 ELO.

BugChess,
a family of chess programs written by programmer François Karr and chess expert Jean-Philippe Karr. The early Bugchess versions starting in 1996 running under MS-DOS ^[1] and Windows were compiled with Borland C++ ^[2] and had their own GUI.

BugChess2

BugChess2 is a WinBoard compliant chess engine written in C++. It was a complete rewrite and has no code in common with BugChess, and features a parallel search to utilize multiple processors. BugChess2 was first released in May 2006 ^[4], and played a strong WCRCC 2008 Annual ACCA World Computer Rapid Chess Championship.

		Butcher (Rzeźnik in Polish ^[1] ) a Chess Engine Communication Protocol compliant chess program written by Marek Kołacz in C, released in September 2001 ^[2] . Executables are available for MS-DOS, Windows and Linux. Since version 1.60, Butcher is able to perform a parallel search under Windows using processes and a shared hash table. A master process spawns worker processes, which run independently without any supervision. The Master process prepares all the structures necessary to split the node and continues the search. Worker processes simply use existing "split nodes" to start their search and report the results. The master process is responsible to kill the workers upon exit ^[3] .

Tournament Play

Rzeźnik aka Butcher played all Polish Computer Chess Championships, and won its first edition, the PCCC 2002, and the open category of the PCCC 2004 and PCCC 2006 ^[5] , and otherwise was always a top scorer, at the PCCC 2012 best Polish program. Butcher further played multiple CCT Tournaments, and had its tournament debut at the CCT3 in May 2001.

		Chat, Wolfgang Delmare's first chess program, playing the WCCC 1986, WMCCC 1987 and WMCCC 1988 ^[1]. Chat was written in Pascal, typically running as DOS engine with a command line interface, at the WCCC 1986 on a CDC Cyper 175, at the WMCCC 1988 as dedicated unit on a 68020 processor with a SciSys Leonardo board ^[2] ^[3] as user interface ^[4] ^[5] . According to Thorsten Czub, Chat had only a brute-force search depth of one ply, but was otherwise quite selective ^[6] .

a commercial chess program by Wolfgang Delmare, developed in the late 80s and early 90s. It was a 16-bit 8086 and later 32-bit x86 program running on PCs under MS-DOS with a pleasant GUI. Check Check played the Tenth World Microcomputer Chess Championship 1990 in Lyon, and the first three International Paderborn Computer Chess Championships, IPCCC 1991, IPCCC 1992, and IPCCC 1993, and was the first commercial chess program using own three and four men Endgame Tablebases, spending the "huge" amount of 16MB hard disk space.

		Chess Genius (ChessGenius), a series of chess engines by Richard Lang, written in assembly for various processor architectures such as Motorola 68000 and Intel 8086 and x86, and successor of Lang's dedicated 68000 based Mephisto Vancouver program incorporating small improvements, the 8086 version first released in 1992 as PC program running under 16-bit MS-DOS ^[1]. Chess Genius 2 won the manufacturers and Absolute World Microcomputer Chess Champion titles at the WMCCC 1993 running on the PC based Mephisto Wundermaschine, and was also shipped as Mephisto Genius 68030 module for Mephisto module systems. Chess Genius 4 in 1995 became a 16-bit Windows program ^[2] with a GUI developed by Adrian Millett ^[3] written in C ^[4], which further evolved to a multi-engine GUI via Chess Genius 6 (6.5) to the Millennium Chess System ^[5], and the Chess Genius Classic GUI ^[6]. Chess Genius was further ported to various PDA and mobile platforms, such as Palm and Apple's iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad on the iTunes Store ^[7] , as well as Android. In November 2015, Chess Genius, ported to the ARM Cortex-M processor, was released as dedicated Millennium ChessGenius.

Intel Grand Prix

In 1994, during the Intel Grand Prix Cycle ^[11] in London, Chess Genius 3, operated by Ossi Weiner, won a speed chess game (25-minutes per side) against Garry Kasparov ^[12] and drew the second game, knocking Kasparov out of the tournament. This was the first match that Kasparov ever lost to a computer. In the next round, Genius then beat Predrag Nikolić, but then lost to Viswanathan Anand ^[13] ^[14] ^[15] ^[16] .

Chess Partner,
an early chess program for the IBM PC by Scott Murray commercially released in 1983, running under DOS 1.1 or later. It requires a color graphics adapter and 128KiB of memory. In his review, along with the SPOC program, Dave Whitehouse's recommendation was to wait for something better to come along ^[1].

		Chess Tiger, a chess engine by Christophe Théron. Chess Tiger and the version dubbed Gambit Tiger ^[1] competed the WMCCC 1997, WCCC 1999, WMCCC 2000 (3rd place) and the WMCCC 2001, won three times the French Computer Chess Championship, three times the French Programmers Tournament, two times the Spanish Computer Chess Championships, three times the Dutch Open Computer Chess Championship, and the BELCT 2001. As once mentioned by Christophe, Chess Tiger uses a resource friendly 16x16 Board Vector Attack approach ^[2]. Chess Tiger is suited to run on various platforms, an UCI compatible PC version is available from Lokasoft ^[3] , and Chess Tiger 15 from ChessBase ^[4] . Recent versions focus on PDAs, Tablet computers, and Smartphones, such as the free Palm version ^[5] , and the releases for Apple's iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, all running under Apples iOS Mobile operating system ^[6], also incorporated in Apple's Chess Pro - with coach ^[7].

1997

The only tiger playing chess in the world! This program, developed under the Caribbean sun, is a blitz specialist. Recently it has greatly been improved and rewritten for 32 bits processors, bringing its level close to the best "state of the art" PC computer chess.

1999

Chess Tiger used to be a very good tactical program, but has been improved to include more positional knowledge and is now a more balanced chess player. Chess Tiger is still developed under the sun, in Guadeloupe (French West Indies).

		Chessmaster, a series of chess programs developed and released by Ubisoft. It is the best-selling chess franchise in history, with more than five million units sold as of 2002 ^[1] . Due to its sophisticated GUI, graphics and animations, adjustable playing strength and countless features, Chessmaster is dedicated to the mass market, and due to the strong engine with configurable "personalities", integrated database support, annotated games, and chess lessons and tutorials, also interesting for advanced users. Chessmaster XI, released in 2007, is the most recent version ^[2]. Dedicated for chess beginners and casual chess fans, Chessmaster Challenge differs from Chessmaster 10th Edition in its simplified interface, and scaled-down tutorials. MyChess II

Chessmaster was first released as Chessmaster 2000 in 1986 by Software Toolworks, Inc., a software and computer game publisher located in Los Angeles ^[10], co-developed by its founder Walt Bilofsky ^[11] and Michael E. Duffy ^[12], with a chess engine by David Kittinger, loosely based on MyChess II published by the same vendor since 1984 ^[13] . CM 2000 was released for various 8- and 16-bit home computer platforms based on 6502, Z80, 68000 and 8086 processors, such as Amiga, Apple II, Atari 8-bit, Atari ST, ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC, Macintosh, and DOS PCs. The PC version was a rewrite in C based on the 6502 assembly version ^[14], which also went into Novag's dedicated Constellation some years before, as mentioned by Larry Kaufman in the USOCCC 1986 tournament report ^[15]:

Novag's programmer Dave Kittinger also was the programmer of the three PC software entries under the name "Chessmaster". As they employ a version of the rather dated "Constellation" program they were not expected to be competitive with the dedicated units, except for "Chessmaster 2000 Apple" which employed extensive technology to run at high speed.

Sargon 3

After a deal with Fidelity Electronics in 1988, Software Toolworks continued the Chessmaster series for Apple computers with a Sargon III based program by Kathe and Dan Spracklen, market as Fidelity Chessmaster 2100 ^[16]. PC versions of CM 2100 were based on a Kittinger program ^[17].

Chessmaster 3000

The Chessmaster 3000 was released in 1991 for MS-DOS and Windows 3.x PCs, as well for Apple Macintosh, based on a Kittinger program as confirmed by John Merlino ^[18] ^[19] ^[20], and mentioned in CCR 5.1 ^[21]:

Kittinger's first program for personal computers was incorporated into the popular program Chessmaster 2000 developed by Software Toolworks. Kittinger's program was then modified and used in some of the versions of Chessmaster 2100 and Chessmaster 3000.

Fernando Villegas recalled Michael E. Duffy and Andrew Iverson working on the engine ^[22], which does not necessarily imply they had an own one developed from scratch, but interfacing the Kittinger engine to the GUI.

The King

With the release of Chessmaster 4000 Turbo in 1993, The King by Johan de Koning became the CM engine until the present, with annual, biennial and triennial releases for major Windows versions until Chessmaster XI in 2007, incorporating the The King 3.50 with a parallel search able to support multiple processors. The King Version 3.12 has become a WinBoard engine within the ChessMaster 8000 and newer versions ^[23] . Some versions were also made available for Mac OS computers, and the Xbox Live Arcade ^[24].

Endgame Tablebases

Chessmaster 9000 and later versions support their own compact 3-5-man Endgame Tablebases designed by Johan de Koning, which can be generated with the Final Endgame Generator (FEG) via the Windows Command Prompt ^[26]. Tablebase researcher Marc Bourzutschky further created some theoretically important six piece EGTBs in 2003 ^[27].

Companies

Software Toolworks was founded in 1980 by Walt Bilofsky, who was one of three programmers who designed and created the Chessmaster in the mid 80s ^[28]. In 1994, Software Toolworks, Inc. was merged to Mindscape ^[29] ^[30] in conjunction with the acquirement by Pearson PLC ^[31] with Michael E. Duffy ^[32] and David Grenewetzki ^[33] involved, in 1998 sold to The Learning Company, in the same year bought by Mattel and renamed to Mattel Interactive. In 2000, The Gores Group carves out the re-renamed Learning Company from Mattel, and the Game Studios of The Learning Company was sold to Ubi Soft - all employees were given the opportunity to become employees of their most well-known studio, Red Storm Entertainment ^[34] .

		Cyrus, Richard Lang's first chess program, written in Assembly for a Z80 CPU. Starting programming in January 1981, his tournament debut at the 2nd European Microcomputer Chess Championship at the PCW Show 1981 in London was already a breakthrough. Cyrus was the clear winner with 5 out of 5 in a field of 12 Micros. Cyrus ran on a Nascom microcomputer using a 4 MHz Z80 CPU, and Lang immediately was offered two contracts by David Levy and Kevin O’Connell, one for Cyrus, and one to work as programmer for Intelligent Software. Lang accepted, and Cyrus IS-Chess for the Sinclair ZX Spectrum was his first commercial entry, followed by programs for various dedicated chess computers merchandised by Intelligent Software, as well a further improved version of Cyrus, Cyrus II. In an 2003 interview, Richard Lang stated that there is still much of Cyrus in current versions of Chess Genius. For example, he had never used quiescence searches and relied instead on a static swap off routine ^[1].

ACM 1981 Blitz

An improved version of Cyrus appeared at the ACM Speed Chess Tournament 1981, running on an Osborne Z80 microcomputer and matched against mainframe programs, beating Cray Blitz and Chess 4.5, and only losing to Belle ^[3].

Cyrus II

		Working for Intelligent Software, Richard Lang continued the Cyrus development including a 6502 port to cover the growing market of Apple II and Commodore 64 home computers. At the 3rd European Microcomputer Chess Championship, September 1982, La Regence became strong runner up behind Advance 2.4, while Cyrus II itself didn't quite come up to its expectations. Lang: 'It was written in such a hurry and the tournament came in the middle of its development period rather than at the end'. There were quite a few new ideas in the program, and he didn't have much time to test them before the tournament. The new ideas were a combination of running faster and implementing new chess knowledge, by getting it to recognize isolated and doubled pawns and the like ^[10]. Various programs derivate from Cyrus competed at the 4th European Microcomputer Chess Championship, September 1983. In about 1983 Richard Lang started to write his new program Psion for 68000 family of processors, and was about to abandon the work for Intelligent Software, who continued their own work by owning the Cyrus brand by primary programmer Mark Taylor, yielding in Cyrus 68K. Its predecessor, competing under the name 65 Cyrus X at the WMCCC 1983 in Budapest is assigned to Intelligent Software with the authors David Levy, Mark Taylor and Kevin O’Connell at the ICGA tournament page ^[12].

		Dabbaba, a chess playing program written from May 1995 to Nov. 1998 by Jens Bæk Nielsen in Turbo C to run on PC's under DOS in graphics mode ^[1], also able to play chess variants like Knightmate Chess ^[2], Shatranj and many others ^[3]. During its iterative search ^[4] ^[5], maintaining a ply stack of irreversible aspects of the position, that is castling rights, en passant target, halfmove clock, and hash-keys, it updates its mailbox board and piece-lists incrementally during make and unmake move. A feature of Dabbaba is that it starts its search by using up to 20% of the allotted time for a move using a mate search at depth zero, following long sequences of checks to see if it results in a mate, material gain or perhaps a saving draw. To avoid a search explosion, Dabbaba considers ply-distance to the root and number of replies so that shallow lines are searched deeper than wide lines ^[6]. In May 2008, Jim Ablett released a WinBoard version of Dabbaba ^[7], and in August 2012 the original author ^[8].

Etymology

The Dabbaba (or dabaaba, dabbabah) is a Fairy chess piece that jumps two squares orthogonally, leaping over intermediate pieces like a knight, also called (2,0)-leaper. The Arabic word dabbāba formerly meant a type of medieval siege engine, and nowadays an army tank.

		Diogenes, a chess program by Jörg Burwitz. Diogenes is a DOS-program written in Turbo Pascal. It uses a fast, incremental updated evaluation, and applies a principal variation search with none recursive null move pruning of R=2, razoring, and has no Hash tables ^[1]. Diogenes played several International Paderborn Computer Chess Championships, Aegon Tournaments ^[2] and three World Microcomputer Chess Championships, Munich 1993, Paderborn 1995 and Jakarta 1996 ^[3] .

		E.T.Chess, a chess program by Eric Triki written in C. The older DOS version, developed until 2001, has its own graphical interface ^[1], applying Negamax Alpha-Beta, a quite advanced evaluation function, Killer heuristic, Null move heuristic and a Transposition table. EGA Chess,
an early chess program for the IBM PC by Lloyd L. Lank, featuring a graphics board using the EGA or VGA display standards, running under DOS 2.0 or later, commercially released in 1988 by Cube Microsystems, Overland Park, Kansas ^[1]. EGA Chess played the Second United States Open Computer Chess Championship 1986 ^[2], the Third United States Open Computer Chess Championship 1987 ^[3] and the Fourth United States Open Computer Chess Championship 1988 ^[4]. The game had an on-line tutorial that include animated explanations of moves such as castling and en passant.

Eugen,
a chess program developed by Eugenio Castillo Jiménez to run under MS-DOS. Eugen participated at the WMCCC 1996 in Jakarta, the WMCCC 1997 in Paris and the WCCC 1999 in Paderborn. Further, Eugen played various Spanish Computer Chess Championships, and won the SCCC 1996 ^[1] ^[2].

According to Eugenio ^[3], Eugen was partially inspirated by freeware programs like Turbo Chess, GNU Chess, and Crafty. It used 16 bit attacktables which were incrementally updated in every make and unmake move, the search uses iterative deepening, and recursive nullmove (R=2). Álvaro Begué, who for a short time worked with Eugenio on a computer chess project, mentioned Eugen had a good implementation of the null-move quiescence algorithm ^[4], based on the ideas and publications by Don Beal ^[5].

Eugen 7.2 is a program based on a hard selective search extensions algorithm, he don't makes conventional alpha beta pruning and he (in Spanish it's he) uses a special null turn moves in quiescence search. The program consist of about 40.000 C and assembler code lines. Node speed on a Pentium 133Mhz is approximately 12.000 to 30.000 nodes per second. Chess programming is my hobby-job for about last 8 years. Currently Spanish CCC.

1999

Eugen born in 1994 like a personal free time project, initially written in Pascal and assembler, in 1995 it was changed to C language. Eugen is partially inspirated in freeware programs like Turbo Chess, Gnu, and Crafty.

		Fritz (early versions called Knightstalker in the USA), a series of chess programs published by ChessBase, until Fritz 13 the engine developed by primary author Frans Morsch and Mathias Feist, Deep Fritz 14 released in November 2013 by Gyula Horváth ^[1], and Fritz 15 in November 2015 by Vasik Rajlich ^[2] ^[3]. Fritz 1-13 were based on Frans Morsch's program Quest, and was first marketed by ChessBase in 1991 as MS-DOS program with its own Graphical User Interface ^[4] . Since version 4, released in 1996, Fritz ran on Windows, and is until today one the world’s most popular and successful chess programs. At the WCCC 1995, Fritz became World Computer Chess Champion, winning a notable game versus Deep Blue prototype ^[5] and the playoff ^[6] against Star Socrates.

Etymology

The given name Fritz originated as a German nickname for Friedrich, or Frederick (der "Alte Fritz" was a nickname for King Frederick II of Prussia, and of Frederick III, German Emperor ^[8]), as well as for similar names including Fridolin. Fritz was also a name given to German troops by the British and others in the first and second world wars, equivalent to Tommy, as the British troops were called by German and other troops ^[9] . Creative ChessBase partner Olaf Oldigs ^[10] had suggested the name Fritz for the chess program ^[11] .

Null Move

Frans Morsch, as well as other Dutch computer chess programmers like Bart Weststrate and Dap Hartmann ^[13] , did early experiments with recursive null move pruning in the late 80s, likely after it was discussed at the panel workshop during the WCCC 1986 after Don Beal's talk covering null move ^[14] ^[15] . Frans Morsch told Chrilly Donninger about recursive null move, who popularized it by his Null Move and Deep Search paper in the ICCA Journal 1993 ^[16] .

1995

Fritz is built around a selective search technique known as null-move search. As part of its search, Fritz allows one side to move twice (the other side does a null-move). If the position after the null-move does not return a high value in the evaluation function, then clearly the first of the two moves did not contain a threat. This applies to 95% of the moves in a search. Detecting such moves before they are searched to the full depth is an excellent method to speed-up the search. In its latest version, Fritz manages a 10-times speed-up over a version without the null-move search. Selective search unavoidably introduces oversights, but these are few. In tournaments against humans and other programs, Fritz has proven to be a tough opponent when defending difficult positions.

1997

Fritz won the ICCA chess computer world championship in Hong Kong 1995 beating a prototype of the Deep Blue chess computer. It obtained the best computer result in the 1996 man-computer Aegon tournament. Fritz is build around a selective search technique known as the null-move search. Move generators, evaluation functions and data structures have been designed specially to maximise the effectiveness of the null-move search. If anything, Fritz is fast. The search engine is written in highly optimised assembly language. The present version searches at a rate of one thousand processor cycles per position. The openings book was constructed from grandmaster games. Fritz learns from his games and adjusts the probability weights in the openings book automatically.

1999

Fritz is build around a selective search technique known as the null-move search. As part of its search, Fritz allows one side to move twice (the other side does a null-move). This allows the program to detect weak moves before they are searched to their full depth. Move generators, evaluation functions and data structures have been designed to maximize the effectiveness of the null-move search. Fritz is the winner of the previous computerchess world championship in Hong Kong 1995. 1993 Fritz tied for 1st place in a Blitz tournament in Munich with the complete world elite. It scored the best computer result in the 1996 man-computer Aegon tournament. In 1998 Fritz was leading the prestigious Swedish rating list. It won an active chess tournament Frankfurt 1998 with a full point ahead of 36 grandmasters.

Deep Fritz

Deep Fritz is the engine designed for multiprocessing and parallel search, it first appeared as Deep Fritz 6 in 2000. Since version 14 by Gyula Horváth, Deep is obligatory.

Fritz SSS

A Fritz version called SSS ^[18] or even SSS* ^[19] that played the Dutch Chess Championship 2000 in Rotterdam, becoming third with 7/11 behind Loek van Wely, and Jeroen Piket, shared with Sergei Tiviakov and Paul van der Sterren ^[20], was not related to the SSS* search algorithm, but to the three primary sponsors of the event ^[21] ^[22].

Pocket Fritz

Pocket Fritz is a chess program for PocketPC Personal digital assistants (PDAs). Pocket Fritz 4 is based on Hiarcs by Mark Uniacke, Pocket Fritz 2 used a port of Shredder by Stefan Meyer-Kahlen ^[23] .
