		Andreas Strangmüller, a German correspondence chess player and World Champion of the International Email Chess Group ^[1] ^[2] in the 2004 cycle ^[3]. Since August 2013, Andreas Strangmüller maintains the FGRL computer chess engine rating list ^[4], further conducting experiments concerning branching factor and engine strength as function of search time, transposition table size, processor type, and number of threads.

ChessGUI,
a free Graphical User Interface for Chess Engine Communication Protocol and UCI compatible engines running under Windows, developed by Matthias Gemuh using the Visual Component Library of Borland's C++Builder 5.0, starting as GUI for his engines BigLion, Taktix, and ArcBishop. ChessGUI has a classical frame window with multiple hierarchical tabbed views on the current tournament or game document and engine outputs.

Features

Testing Framework

While Matthias claims "ChessGUI is not WinBoard, nor Arena, nor ..., but instead it is just an idea in a pre-beta stage of conception" ^[1], its sophisticated tournament modes along with its Sample Testsuite Tools ^[2] make ChessGUI a popular framework for engine testing and to produce rating lists.

Live Broadcast

ChessGUI is able to broadcast live games via the internet using TLCV by Thomas McBurney ^[3] ^[4], as successfully applied during the TCEC broadcasts by Martin Thoresen ^[5]. More recently, ChessGUI was incorporated in Ferdinand Mosca's aiBloodshed chess game broadcaster.

Support

ChessGUI supports various chess variants, opening books and endgame tablebases, the latter also for optional adjudication of the game result. Version 0.245f, released in December 2013, supports the six piece Syzygy Bases ^[6].

Cutechess-cli,
a Chess Engine Communication Protocol and UCI compliant, lightweight command line interface by Ilari Pihlajisto, suited to run automated engine-engine matches. Cutechess-cli is based on the core chess library of the Cute Chess GUI, co-developed by Arto Jonsson, and is open source, released under the GPLv3+ license, first published in March 2009 ^[1] . It requires appropriate QT core library at runtime. Cutechess-cli can be used with Rémi Coulom's CLOP to automate chess engine parameter tuning.

Kirr's Chess Engine Comparison, a tournament rating list of original and free single-CPU chess engines, created in 2005 by Kirill Kryukov. KCEC time control and conditions are compatible with CCRL 40/4, so all KCEC games are also submitted to CCRL 40/4 database. KCEC ratings are calibrated to CCRL 40/4 rating list from July 25, 2008 using all shared engines ^[1].

LittleBlitzer, (LB)
an UCI compliant, dialogue based user interface by Nathan Thom for the purpose to play automated tournaments using a set of UCI engines configured by external text files. Tournaments are either round-robin where each engine plays the same number of games, or gauntlets where one engine plays all others repeatedly. As output of a tournament, LB creates a PGN file, which could be used by Bayeselo or Elostat to calculate a rating for each participant. LittleBlitzer is designed to run tens of thousands of games at fast time controls without a game view via graphical notation window or board windows to monitor the games. LB assigns one thread per engine, and may play multiple games in parallel if multiple processors are available. LB supports Chess 960 as well as positions loaded from FEN, EPD ^[1] or PGN files, and can adjudicate games early based on specified criteria ^[2].

		Martin Thoresen, a Norwegian IT consultant and Microsoft employee, computer chess aficionado, tester, and organizer and director of Thoresen Chess Engine Competition - TCEC, currently living and working in Stockholm, Sweden. He got interested in computer chess in 2006 after watching Magnus Carlsen at the Chess World Cup in late 2005, and spent some time as part of the CCRL testing group, but thought it would be more interesting to actually watch the games, using long time control - and preferably live - so the idea of TCEC was born, first season launched in 2010 ^[1].

		Match Statistics, the statistics of chess tournaments and matches, that is a collection of chess games and the presentation, analysis, and interpretation of game related data, most common game results to determine the relative playing strength of chess playing entities, here with focus on chess engines. To apply match statistics, beside considering statistical population, it is conventional to hypothesize a statistical model describing a set of probability distributions.

Ratios / Operating Figures

Common tools, ratios and figures to illustrate a tournament outcome and provide a base for its interpretation.

Number of games

The total number of games played by an engine in a tournament.

The score is a representation of the tournament-outcome from the viewpoint of a certain engine.

These two ratios depend on the strength difference between the competitors, the average strength level, the color and the drawishness of the opening book-line. Due to the second reason given, these ratios are very much influenced by the timecontrol, what is also confirmed by the published statistics of the testing orgnisations CCRL and CEGT, showing an increase of the draw rate at longer time controls. This correlation was also shown by Kirill Kryukov, who was analyzing statistics of his test-games ^[2] . The program playing white seems to be more supported by the additional level of strength. So, although one would expect with increasing draw rates the win ratio to approach 50%, in fact it is remaining about equal.

Doubling Time Control
As posted in October 2016 ^[3] , Andreas Strangmüller conducted an experiment with Komodo 9.3, time control doubling matches under Cutechess-cli, playing 3000 games with 1500 opening positions each, without pondering, learning, and tablebases, Intel i5-750 @ 3.5 GHz, 1 Core, 128 MB Hash ^[4] , see also Kai Laskos' 2013 results with Houdini 3 ^[5] and Diminishing Returns:

Likelihood of Superiority

The likelihood of superiority (LOS) denotes how likely it would be for two players of the same strength to reach a certain result - in other fields called a p-value, a measure of statistical significance of a departure from the null hypothesis ^[6]. Doing this analysis after the tournament one has to differentiate between the case where one knows that a certain engine is either stronger or equally strong (directional or one-tailed test) or the case where one has no information of whether the other engine is stronger or weaker (non-directional or two-tailed test). The latter due to the reduced information results in larger confidence intervals.

Two-tailed Test
Null- and alternative hypothesis:

The probability of the null hypothesis being true can be calculated given the tournament outcome. In other words, how likely would it be for two players of the same strength to reach a certain result. The LOS would then be the inverse, 1 - the resulting probability.

For this type of analysis the trinomial distribution, a generalization of the binomial distribution, is needed. Whilest the binomial distribution can only calculate the probability to reach a certain outcome with two possible events, the trinominal distribution can account for all three possible events (win, draw, loss).

The following functions gives the probability of a certain game outcome assuming both players were of equal strength:

This calculation becomes very inefficient for larger number of games. In this case the standard normal distribution can give a good approximation:

where N(1 - draw_ratio) is the sum of wins and losses:

To calculate the LOS one needs the cumulative distribution function of the given normal distribution. However, as pointed out by Rémi Coulom, calculation can be done cleverly, and the normal approximation is not really required ^[7] . As further emphasized by Kai Laskos ^[8] and Rémi Coulom ^[9] ^[10] , draws do not count in LOS calculation and don't make a difference whether the game results were obtained when playing Black or White. It is a good approximation when the two players played the same number of games with each color:

Statistical Analysis

The trinomial versus the 5-nomial model

As indicated above a match between two engines is usually modeled as a sequence of independent trials taken from a trinomial distribution with probabilities (win_ratio,draw_ratio,loss_ratio). This model is appropriate for a match with randomly selected opening positions and randomly assigned colors (to maintain fairness). However one may show that under reasonable elo models the trinomial model is not correct in case games are played in pairs with reversed colors (as is commonly the case) and unbalanced opening positions are used.

This was also empirically observed by Kai Laskos ^[15] . He noted that the statistical predictions of the trinomial model do not match reality very well in the case of paired games. In particular he observed that for some data sets the variance of the match score as predicted by the trinomial model greatly exceeds the variance as calculated by the jackknife estimator. The jackknife estimator is a non-parametric estimator, so it does not depend on any particular statistical model. It appears the mismatch may even occur for balanced opening positions, an effect which can only be explained by the existence of correlations between paired games - something not considered by any elo model.

Over estimating the variance of the match score implies that derived quantities such as the number of games required to establish the superiority of one engine over another with a given level of significance are also over estimated. To obtain agreement between statistical predictions and actual measurements one may adopt the more general 5-nomial model. In the 5-nomial model the outcome of paired games is assumed to follow a 5-nomial distribution with probabilities

These unknown probabilities may be estimated from the outcome frequencies of the paired games and then subsequently be used to compute an estimate for the variance of the match score. Summarizing: in the case of paired games the 5-nomial model handles the following effects correctly which the trinomial model does not:

Unbalanced openings
Correlations between paired games

SPRT

The sequential probability ratio test (SPRT) is a specific sequential hypothesis test - a statistical analysis where the sample size is not fixed in advance - developed by Abraham Wald ^[17] . While originally developed for use in quality control studies in the realm of manufacturing, SPRT has been formulated for use in the computerized testing of human examinees as a termination criterion ^[18]. As mentioned by Arthur Guez in this 2015 Ph.D. thesis Sample-based Search Methods for Bayes-Adaptive Planning ^[19], Alan Turing assisted by Jack Good used a similar sequential testing technique to help decipher enigma codes at Bletchley Park ^[20]. SPRT is applied in Stockfish testing to terminate self-testing series early if the result is likely outside a given elo-window ^[21] . In August 2016, Michel Van den Bergh posted following Python code in CCC to implement the SPRT a la Cutechess-cli or Fishtest: ^[22] ^[23]

Rainer M. A. Neuhäusler,
a German computer chess aficionado and tester with preference for Gambit lines ^[1]. In the 80s, while affiliated with Hegener & Glaser, he was member of the Mephisto team during the WMCCC 1984 in Glasgow, acting as Mephisto operator as well as photographer for the German computer chess magazine Computerschach und Spiele.

WMCCC Memories

In a 2009 CCC forum post about the above photo, Rainer Neuhäusler mentioned his authorship and recollected his memories about the WMCCC 1984 ^[4]:

I shot this picture as a member of the Mephisto-Team in the tournament room of the Ingram Hotel, Glasgow. The name of this young man is Lars Hjörth. He was the Co-Programmer of the Conchess-Modul by Ulf Rathsman and he also did his job as an operator on the tournament board. I faced him during a tournament game beween Conchess and Mephisto and I remember him as a likable and fair guy who didn't speak very much for 5 reasons: He was a chess player, he was a programmer, he was my opponent, he was a Swede or a Norwegian and I also prefered to be in silence. Nevertheless, there was one communicative event during this game. When I once touched unfortunately the wrong piece Lars didn't cry for the referee, but he only asked very astonished: "why are you so nervous"! A very honest guy this Lars Hjorth, indeed! I know, there is only asked for the name of that guy, but I can't help it, many memories are bubbling up. Once again the "Who's Who" of Computer Chess came together in Glasgow: legendary programmers like Dan and Kathe Spracklen (Fidelity), Richard Lang (Psion) or Martin Bryant (Colossus). And you were sitting on the same table with Jan Louwman, Monroe Newborn and David Levy to talk about Computerchess. When I remember correctly, Harry Schnapp, well known as author of the current Arena Main Book, also honoured the fourth WMCCC at Glasgow with his presence.

		WBEC Ridderkerk, was a private chess engine rating list and chess engine news and tournament site maintained and hosted by Leo Dijksman. The rating list is based on games automatically played via the Chess Engine Communication Protocol with WinBoard and UCI engines which comply to the rules ^[1]. WBEC tournaments started in 2001 with four divisions, continued by 2011 and its 17th edition, in six devisions with 24 engines each plus qualifier for new engines ^[2]. The ELO rating is calculated using Bayesian Elo Rating by Rémi Coulom ^[3]. As of 2012, after finishing the 19th edition, Leo Dijksman had no fun anymore with computerchess tournaments, due to many clones/deratives and some authors seem not to be willing to fix their own bugs ^[4] ^[5]. Leo Dijksman died in February 2015 after battling cancer for almost two years ^[6]. His WBEC Ridderkerk sites are thankworthy archived by the Internet Archive ^[7].
