		Arleen Chafitz, an American entrepreneur, and along with her husband Steve Chafitz founder of Chafitz Inc. and CEO of e-End, located in Frederick, Maryland ^[1] ^[2] ^[3]. Steve and Arleen Chafitz are recognized as two of the most significant leaders of the consumer electronic revolution in the early 1970's. They established Chafitz Inc. in Rockville, Maryland, which became a leading retailers and electronics fulfillment organizations for consumer electronics. They have been credited with pioneering electronic games employing the early advances in Artificial Intelligence such as dedicated chess and Backgammon computers ^[4].

		Barney Darryl Pell, an American computer scientist, entrepreneur, angel investor, and technology and product strategist. He has worked for NASA, Microsoft, and LinkedIn, amongst others, founded Powerset and Moon Express, and is co-founder, chairman and CSO at LocoMobi ^[1] ^[2]. He received his Ph.D. in CS from Trinity College, University of Cambridge on the topic of Meta-Game Playing ^[3]. His program Metagamer is able to play and learn the games of Chess, Checkers, noughts and crosses, Chinese Chess, and Shogi ^[4].

		Berthold (Bert) Seifriz, a German former chess software reseller and distributor, until 2000 ^[1] owner of Gambit-Soft ^[2] ^[3], which discontinued in 2001 ^[4]. At the WMCCC 1993 Berthold Seifritz represented and operated MChess, the program by Marty Hirsch which was then exclusively distributed in Europe by Gambit-Soft.

		Carlos Justiniano, an American technologist, veteran software developer, entrepreneur and author, during the mid 90s project manager and technical lead on the Chessmaster 5000 at Mindscape ^[1]. Inspired by the SETI@home project in 2001 he began work on a personal project to create the largest distributed networked chess playing machine. Carlos was joined a few months later by Colin Frayn and together with hundreds of volunteers they created ChessBrain ^[2] .

		Chin-Liang Chang, a Taiwanese American computer scientist with research interests in artificial intelligence, fuzzy logic, theorem proving, database, and software engineering and the internet. In 1967, Chin-Liang Chang wrote his Ph.D thesis at University of California, Berkeley on fuzzy logic, advised by its inventor Lotfi A. Zadeh ^[1] . At National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, along with Richard C. T. Lee, James R. Slagle and John K. Dixon, Chin-Liang Chang researched on automated theorem proving, to extend Slagle's semantic resolution principle ^[2] , an inference rule for first-order predicate calculus, to deduce logical consequences from a set of axioms ^[3] . He further worked for IBM Almaden Research Center, San Jose, California, Lockheed Missiles & Space Company, Inc., Menlo Park, California ^[4] , and Nicesoft Corp., USA ^[5] , where he developed the Fuzzy programming language NICEL. After his retirement, he has being enjoying being an entrepreneur. His motto is “There is ‘no distance’ in Internet, and there is ‘no age’ in Entrepreneurship” ^[6] .

		Chris Peters, an American electrical engineer and computer scientist with BSEE degree and MSEE degree both from the University of Washington, Seattle, Washington. As former 18-year Microsoft veteran, working on early products like MS-DOS 2.0, Windows 1.0, Word 1.0. and Excel, promoted to General Manager of Microsoft Word, and later to Vice President of Microsoft Office development, Chris Peters is now chairman and an owner of the Professional Bowlers Association ^[1] ^[2] ^[3], and co-founder of Ignition ^[4], a holding company designed to fund, mentor and build 'wireless Internet' start-up companies ^[5].

Clash

While affiliated with the University of Washington, Chris Peters developed the chess program Clash in Fortran running on a Texas Instruments TI-990 and competing once the ACM 1980 ^[9]. Without iterative deepening there was not much to gain, and Clash lost all its four games.

		Chris Whittington, a British computer chess and games programmer, publisher and entrepreneur, author of several commercial computer chess programs including Chess System Tal published through his own company Oxford Softworks. He is famous for his computer chess paradigms as an appeal for knowledge based programs ^[1] ^[2]. In May 2000, when Oxford Softworks was sold to a venture capitalist consortium, Chris retired from games programming. Chris Whittington was and is critic of the arguments that Rybka is a derivate of Fruit since Zach Wegner published his first conclusion on the Rybka/Fruit: evaluation in June 2010 ^[3] ^[4], and consequently critic of the ICGA decision in 2011. During the Investigation process, he was rejected to become member of the panel ^[5].

		David Neil Lawrence Levy, (born 1945 in London) a Scottish International Master chess player (IM Title 1969), Bachelor of Science in Pure Maths, Physics and Statistics ^[1] , renowned computer chess expert and promoter, tournament organizer, businessman, and president of the ICGA, the International Computer Games Association. David Levy authored and co-authored an enormous number of articles and books on Chess, Computer Chess and AI-Topics. Noteworthy is the commercial edition of his Ph.D. thesis Love and Sex With Robots: The Evolution of Human-Robot Relationships ^[2] , which he defended successfully on October 11, 2007, at Maastricht University, The Netherlands.

The Gambler

The Levy Bet

		In 1968, Donald Michie, founder of the Department of Machine Intelligence and Perception at the University of Edinburgh, invited Levy, already a strong international chess player and graduated computer scientist, to the Artificial Intelligence (AI) workshop in Edinburgh ^[6] . Levy played a friendly game of chess against John McCarthy, which Levy won. McCarthy remarked that David was able to beat him, but predicted a computer program would beat David within ten years. David then offered the famous bet, that within that time no chess program would beat him in a tournament match. McCarthy took the bet after consulting Michie ^[7] . The two made a 500 Pound bet, which was later more than doubled when Donald Michie, Seymour Papert from MIT and Ed Kozdrowicki from the University of California, joined in the wager ^[8] . David Levy redeemed the bet ten years later, winning a match against Chess 4.7 in Toronto, 1978 ^[9] . He won a second 5 year bet in 1984, versus Cray Blitz, and then offered a price for the first computer chess team beating him. He finally got crashed 0-4 by Deep Thought in 1989 ^[10].

Since my match in Toronto, last August and September, in which I won my ten years old bet, many people have asked me the inevitable question, "Did they all pay up?", meaning the four people with whom I made the bet. Donald Michie, John McCarthy and Seymour Papert all paid promptly and with good sportsmanship, just as I would have done had I lost. Edward Kozdrowicki, currently of the Aerospace Corporation in El Segundo, California, has not paid and has refused to respond in a positive fashion to a number of telephone calls and letters.

I trust that this answers all questions relating to the payment of the bet.

Advent of EGT

CHAOS failed

Quote by David Levy from his Computer Chess Compendium, The Endgame, pp. 293-294:

The Ending of KRPKR, first attracted the attention of chess programmers in 1974. I was talking to the programmers of CHAOS, during the ACM 1974 in San Diego, and they expressed doubt at my statement that within a year they would not be able to program a computer to play this configuration correctly for both sides, winning with the extra pawn whenever a win was possible, drawing with a pawn less whenever the game really should end in a draw. The discussion closed with a $100 bet, and at the following year's tournament they paid up, admitting that the task was so difficult that they had not even been able to start on it.

Thompson's Databases

The discussion on KRPKR at ACM 1974 further inspired Ken Thompson to work some 10 years on chess endgames and to develop the Thompson's Databases ^[12] :

The second tournament I was in was in San Diego in about '75, '74. And in that tournament David Levy, who is a famous chess personality, was the tournament director. And after the games we were in the bar talking and he was saying that "computers can't play endgames, even simple endgames and they never will." And he said "I am an expert in the rook and pawn against rook endgame and a computer will never play a rook and pawn against rook endgame." And so, I went to my room that evening and was calculating the numbers and came to the conclusion that this was doable, that you could solve that game, absolutely solve it by a different mechanism, you know, not by normal computer chess but by a different mechanism. You could just have the answer and look it up and make a table of everything you are supposed to do. And I came back the next day and told him about it and he say's "nah, it takes too many plys, you know", and I said "no, it is ply independent, this is a different method", so he say's "ah no" so he just "poo poo'd me" and I got sort of, angry is not the right word but I got, you know, you know, so I went home and I worked probably for about ten years on endgames.

Scotch versus Vodka

David Levy further on a second KRPKR bet in Computer Chess Compendium, The Endgame, pp. 293-294:

Being rather greedy, I made a similar bet with Dr. Arlazarov of Kaissa fame during the 1977 World Computer Championship in Toronto. This time the bet was a case of Scotch (if I lost) against a case of Vodka. We agreed that Yuri Averbakh, President of the U.S.S.R. Chess Federation and a renowned endgame expert, would act as arbiter. Just about one year later I heard that I owed Arlazarov a case of Scotch, and section 8.3 of this compendium describes how he and his colleagues collected the wager ^[13] .

WCCC and ICCA

WCCC

David Levy, already associated with Monroe Newborn and Ben Mittman from the early ACM Computer Chess Championships, was initiator and co-founder of the World Computer Chess Championship in 1974, as suggested by the Soviet programmers of Kaissa ^[14] :

Since 1972 (1970 Editor) in the USA and Canada were hold the yearly championships of North America among the chess programs, organized by the ACM. The team of Kaissa directed the organizers of these tournaments to the thought to conduct a world championship, whose organization within the framework its regular congress took upon itself.

ICCA

Three years later at the 2nd WCCC 1977 in Toronto, together with more enthusiastic chess programmers and suggested by Barend Swets, David Levy co-founded the International Computer Chess Association ICCA - Ben Mittman was elected as its first president. David Levy organized a lot of computer chess championships, acting as tournament director, reporter or as participant. He was founder and organizer of the Computer Olympiad and the Mind Sports Olympiads.

President

From 1986 to 1992, David Levy was president of the ICCA, then vice president until 1999 and since then until the present president again, since 2002 of the renamed ICGA ^[15] .

Computer Chess and AI Business

Intelligent Software

In 1979, along with his business partner Kevin O’Connell, David Levy founded Philidor Software, and in 1981 Intelligent Software ^[16] . Business was developing and trading dedicated chess computers ^[17] ^[18] and programs for home computers and PCs. Intelligent Software had several computer chess programmers under contract, Mark Taylor, David Broughton, Mike Johnson, Richard Lang and a Checkers programmer called Martin Bryant ^[19] . Primary business and trading partners were Eric Winkler ^[20] and Eric White ^[21] with their respective companies.

Intelligent Toys

David Levy is now CEO of Intelligent Toys Ltd., a London-based company founded in 2001 that develops toys that incorporate AI, and led the teams that won the Loebner Prize two times in 1997 and 2009 ^[22] ^[23] .

		Ed English, an American computer scientist, programmer and entrepreneur in the area of mobile application, internet security, e-commerce, and video games. He holds a Bachelor of Computer Science in 1979 from Boston College. In 1979/80 he was affiliated with Fidelity Electronics, where he developed software for microcomputer chess games. According to his LinkedIn site, he improved the alpha-beta implementation, apparently of the Chess Challenger 7 by primary author Ron Nelson, to double its playing speed ^[1]. Ed English further worked as game developer for Parker Brothers, where he programmed the Frogger game for the Atari 2600. He is now CEO of the emergency response systems company ELERTS ^[2].

		Ed Trice, an American electrical engineer, entrepreneur, chess and checkers player and programmer. He is inventor of the 10x8 chess variant Gothic Chess, which is similar to Capablanca Chess by adding an Archbishop and Chancellor ^[1] but has a different starting position. In 2002, Ed Trice obtained U.S. Patent #6,481,716 for Gothic Chess ^[2]. Already in the mid 80s, Ed Trice developed the chess program The Sniper ^[3] which had a USCF rating of 2129 in January of 1990 ^[4]. Along with Gil Dodgen in the late 90s, he co-authored the checkers program World Championship Checkers ^[5] which includes a 7-piece endgame database solved using the Distance To Win Metric for 19 billion positions, and an 8-piece database solved for Win-Loss-Draw data for 440 billion positions ^[6]. The 8-piece database was further used to verify Chinook's endgame databases ^[7]. His Gothic Vortex Gothic Chess playing program won the 2004 ^[8] and 2007 Gothic Chess Computer World Championships ^[9] .

(1991-1993), Krypton Ltd. (1994), Timorite Ltd. (1995-1996) ^[2], Systema Leisure Ltd. (1997-2001), and subsequently other Hong Kong companies ^[3]. Eric White had his computer chess debut with the Cassia Chess Mate ^[4] which was a clone of Ron Nelson's Fidelity Chess Challenger 10 (A) ^[5].

In 1981, Eric White started the collaboration with David Levy's and Kevin O’Connell's new company Intelligent Software. White and Allcock's first own dedicated chess computer was the CXG Sensor Computachess ^[6] with a 4-bit Hitachi processor HD44801, and the program by Mark Taylor using only 160 nibbles of RAM, which predecessor was already instantiated in the SciSys Mini Chess series earlier this year.

Chess computers were designed in Hong Kong, manufactured in China, and then marketed under various brand names and retailers, including CXG ^[7] ^[8], Computer Games Ltd. (CGL), ComputaChess, Crown, Hanimex, Unimex, Tandy via RadioShack, Krypton ^[9] ^[10], Schneider ^[11] ^[12], Systema and Toytronic. In 1998 in partnership with Tiger Electronics (Hasbro) ^[13], White produced the Tiger Grenadier and Tiger Voice Master ^[14]. Chess computers were also manufactured for Excalibur and Millennium 2000 ^[15]. David Levy was the source of programs for all cheaper models ^[16], using Sunplus 8-bit chips ^[17] (now Generalplus ^[18]).

		Eric Ernest Winkler, a Swiss physicist, technologist, businessman and manufacturer of consumer electronics and dedicated chess computers, holding a MSc in Physics from ETH Zurich ^[1], in 1978, along with Peter Auge co-founder of Novag, and in 1979 founder and CEO of SciSys (Scientific Systems) located in Hong Kong, 1987 renamed to Saitek ^[2]. Saitek continued the Mephisto trademark after the acquisition of Hegener & Glaser in 1994 ^[3] and its entire business operations in 2000. At the H&G Extraordinary General Meeting in December 2000, it was decided to change the company's name from Hegener + Glaser AG to Stella Entertainment AG realizing 100% of the shares of the Broadway Musical Management GmbH (BMM) ^[4], while Winkler concurrently resigned as member of the supervisory board. Stella became insolvent in 2002, partly acquired by Stage Entertainment - the German Mantelaktien-Report by Undervalued-Shares.com broached the issue ^[5]. In 2007, Saitek's Branded Products division was acquired at a price of 30 million Dollar by Mad Catz ^[6], while Winkler continued with his own company, electronics manufacturer Ryder Industries Ltd., Hong Kong ^[7], no longer in the dedicated chess computer business ^[8].

Inventions

Eric Winkler was involved in various patent-registered inventions in the field of dedicated chess computers, for instance the Sensory Electronic Game which includes a board having a number of defined positions each provided with an isotropic field sensor such as a reed switch which has open and closed positions depending upon the presence or absence of a magnetic field, and two sets of playing pieces ^[10], the Thin Membrane Sensor Board as mentioned by Mike Watters ^[11], and the Configurable computer input device ^[12].

		Fredrik Niemelä, a Swedish computer scientist, consultant, and co-founder and CEO of Kattis ^[1], specializing in automated assessment and technical recruiting systems. He holds a M.Sc. in computer science and engineering in 2004, and a Ph.D. in computer science education in 2015, both from KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, and was visiting professor at Baylor University, Waco, Texas, from 2010 until 2013, teaching data structures, algorithms, graphics, game programming, and researching computer science education. Before, from 2006 to 2010, Fredrik Niemelä was development director at Spotify. As part of his master's thesis he designed communications protocols over SIP for mobile games on Nokia mobile phones. During the mid 2000s, he was affiliated with the ICGA in supporting Computer Olympiads as well as associated conferences. He was privileged to lead the Hex competition at the 11th Computer Olympiad ^[2].

		Günter Niggemann, a German wholesale chess material seller and founder of Schachversand Niggemann, a chess store distributing chess sets, chess books, chess software and dedicated chess computers. At the WMCCC 1993, Günter Niggemann representing Saitek, operated Kasparov Sparc by Kathe and Dan Spracklen, where a broken interface card was an issue, read Mclane's witness report in rgcc for the whole story ^[1] . Due to his passion for chess and dedicated chess computers, Günter Niggemann started in 1984 with a small chess shop, when he was board member and tournament organizer at chess club SG Porz in Porz, a city district of Cologne ^[2].

Involved with computing since 1966, Ira Baxter started Software Dynamics in 1976, a systems software house, where he designed compilers, time-sharing and distributed network operating systems, and the chess program SD Chess written in compiled Basic to run on a 6800 based microcomputer ^[8]. A program called Chess D by Ira Baxter was on the Stand-By list of the WCCC 1983 in New York ^[9].

		Johan Enroth, ^[1] was a Swedish entrepreneur and computer chess official. In 1979, he founded the Swedish section of the ICCA - forerunner of the SSDF, and became their first chairman ^[2] , co-organizing the three Stockholm Microcomputer Chess Tournaments, 1979, 1980 ^[3] and 1981 as early highlights, and establishing the PLY magazine as official organ. Johan Enroth served as vice president of the ICCA from 1983 ^[4] until 1986, supporting Monroe Newborn during the third ICCA triennial. As owner of the Systemhuset aka System Integrierung company ^[5], Johan Enroth worked with Swedish chess programmers, in particular Ulf Rathsman with his Princhess program, in 1981 incorporated inside the dedicated Conchess computer of the German Consumenta company. In 1983, after Consumenta went bankrupt, he continued the Conchess brand with a rather successful WMCCC 1984, but the WMCCC 1985, when Princhess as well as three instances of the new Plymate program for the Conchess co-authored by Lars Hjörth, finished way behind Richard Lang's Mephistos, yielded more or less in the cessation of Conchess computer manufacturing and Enroth's engagement in that field.

		John Poduska, Jr., an American computer scientist, and as former computer chess programmer author of the chess programm Chaturanga, which two times played the ACM North American Computer Chess Championships, ACM 1981 ^[1] and ACM 1982 ^[2]. John Poduska, Jr. is son of John William Poduska, Sr., a technological entrepreneur, independent business consultant, former chair of the board for Advanced Visual Systems ^[3] ^[4] and in 1979 the founder of Apollo Computer, which was one of the first creators of graphical workstations in the 1980s ^[5]. Therefor Chaturanga was obligated to run on John Poduska's father's hardware.

		Joseph (Joe) Sugarman, an American electrical engineer, marketing innovator, and founder and CEO of JS&A Group, Inc.. He used direct marketing to sell one of the world's first pocket calculators, and introduced the cordless phone and the digital watch to the public with his marketing techniques. In 1986, JS&A changed its marketing focus from selling electronic products to health, fitness and sunglasses. Later, in 1990, he concentrated solely on his line of BluBlocker sunglasses ^[1] , which he sold in direct mailings, mail-order advertising, catalogs and on TV through infomercials, and the QVC, the Home Shopping Channel ^[2] .

Karpov Challenge

According to his marketing strategy to gain publicity, and despite the MK I was a quite weak program, he challenged World Champion Anatoly Karpov and offered him $50,000 and a percentage of each unit sold. Karpov first rejected, and later accepted to endorse the game, but offered to let JS&A spend the money on advertisement to spread the word ^[5] . Sugarman broached the issue in his The Adweek Copywriting Handbook with the headline "Soviet Challenge" and the sub-headline "Can an American chess computer beat the Soviet chess champion? A confrontation between American space-age technology and a Soviet psychological weapon" ^[6]. However, in the meantime Sugarman's busisness partner, Peter Auge of MK I manufacturer Novag, had already made his own arrangements with Karpov.

Similar trials of this marketing technique, i.e. by German wholesale chess bookseller and former European exclusive distributor of Marty Hirsch's MChess program, Martin Stamer, to challenge Garry Kasparov ^[7] ^[8] , were less successful.

Data Cash Systems vs. JS&A Group

It transpired the JS&A Chess Computer and therefore in the Novag Chess Champion MK I program was a clone of the Data Cash Systems Inc. CompuChess program, which was developed by David B. Goodrich & Associates, and released in late 1977 ^[9] , only a few months after the first dedicated chess computer, the Chess Challenger I appeared. The ROM in the MK I was identical to the ROM in the CompuChess. In 1979 Data Cash Systems took legal action against JS&A for breach of copyright ^[10] , which failed because it transpired that the copyright had not been adequately protected in terms of USA law ^[11] ^[12] ^[13] ^[14].

		Kai-Fu Lee, a Taiwanese computer scientist, tech incubator, and CEO at Innovation Works ^[1] ^[2]. He was founding president of Google China, serving from July 2005 through September 2009, and was also affiliated with Microsoft and Apple. Kai-Fu Lee graduated from Columbia University in computer science in 1983, and earned a Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University in 1988, where he worked on machine learning, pattern recognition and speech recognition.

During the mid and late 80s, along with Sanjoy Mahajan, Kai-Fu Lee co-authored the at that time world class Othello program Bill ^[4], initially written in Common Lisp at Carnegie Mellon University in 1985, in 1986 rewritten in C, and in 2005 released under the GPL ^[5]. Bill 3.0 applied Bayesian learning of discriminant functions that automaticly combines evaluation features ^[6] ^[7].
