		Agata Muszycka-Jones, a Canadian computer scientist and software developer. She studied at the Technical University of Łódź and obtained her Master Degree in Computer Science on Searching Techniques and Pathology in Search ^[1] at the Concordia University in Montreal. She has been developing software for 8 years before joining IBM in 1995 ^[2] . In her 1985 paper along with Rajjan Shinghal An empirical comparison of pruning strategies in game trees, NegaScout and PVS was concluded superior to Alpha-Beta in practice ^[3] .

		Antonia (Nietta) Jeanrenaud, (1945 - September 30, 2014) was an Italian chess player, Italian Senior Chess Champion (Campionessa Italiana) in 2011 ^[1], computer scientist and avocational computer chess programmer from Bari, Apulia, relying on completly own ideas. She was author of the chess engine EtaBeta, and courageously competed at the WCCC 2006 in Turin ^[2], and further played various Italian Computer Chess Championships with her program. Antonia Jeanrenaud passed away on September 30, 2014.

		Arleen Chafitz, an American entrepreneur, and along with her husband Steve Chafitz founder of Chafitz Inc. and CEO of e-End, located in Frederick, Maryland ^[1] ^[2] ^[3]. Steve and Arleen Chafitz are recognized as two of the most significant leaders of the consumer electronic revolution in the early 1970's. They established Chafitz Inc. in Rockville, Maryland, which became a leading retailers and electronics fulfillment organizations for consumer electronics. They have been credited with pioneering electronic games employing the early advances in Artificial Intelligence such as dedicated chess and Backgammon computers ^[4].

		Barbara Liskov, (née Barbara Jane Huberman in 1939) an American mathematician, computer scientist and Ford Professor at MIT School of Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1968 Stanford University made her the first woman in the United States to be awarded a Ph.D. from a computer science department, advised by John McCarthy. The topic of her Ph.D. thesis was a computer program to play chess end games, where she proposed the Killer Heuristic ^[1] ^[2]. Huberman's program could solve KQK, KRK, KBBK, KBNK, and KNNNK ^[3].

Barbara Allen Szabo,
an American Ph.D. in clinical psychology with a career of sorts in freelance art, pottery, and writing ^[1], along with her husband Alexander Szabo conducting a computer programming services company, located in San Antonio, New Mexico ^[2]. In the 80s they were active in computer chess business and research, Szabo Software located in Borrego Springs, California, distributed their commercial chess program TechMate for the Atari ST ^[3].

		Chia-Hui Chang, a Taiwanese computer scientist and full professor at Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, National Central University, Taoyuan, Taiwan. She received her B.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in computer science and information engineering from National Taiwan University in 1993 and 1999, respectively. Her research interests include artificial intelligence, web intelligence, information extraction, machine learning, data mining, and knowledge discovery from databases ^[1]. In 2015, along with Jr-Chang Chen, I-Chen Wu, Wen-Jie Tseng, and Bo-Han Lin, she published on Job-Level Alpha-Beta Search proposing a distributed job level alpha-beta (JL-ABS) search algorithm based on a best-first search version of MTD(f), which was demonstrated by using it in an opening book analysis for Chinese Chess ^[2].

Chu-Hsuan Hsueh, (薛筑軒)
a Taiwanese computer scientist affiliated with the National Chiao Tung University, Hsinchu. As Ph.D. student in I-Chen Wu's Computer Games and Intelligence Lab ^[1], she is working on Monte-Carlo Tree Search for incomplete information games. Since 2014, Chu-Hsuan Hsueh is co-author of the Chinese Dark Chess program and multiple gold medal winner of Computer Olympiads and TCGA tournaments ^[2] DarkKnight, along with Wen-Jie Tseng and I-Chen Wu. Based on the original DarkKnight, she incorporated several techniques including early playout terminations, implicit minimax backups, quality-based rewards, and progressive bias to improve the playing strength. Besides, she also did some tunings for tournaments, e.g. time management, and dealing with 180 plies to draw.

		Elke van Roon, a Dutch social worker, chess pedagogue and chess trainer for the young ^[1] ^[2] at Schaakvereniging HMC Den Bosch ^[3], 's-Hertogenbosch, as well as tester and operator of XiniX, the program written by husband Tony van Roon-Werten. Elke operated XiniX in turn with Tony at the WCCC 2002 and various Dutch Open Computer Chess Championships and International CSVN Tournaments ^[4]. Elke further wrote tournament reports for Computerschaak, and served as PR assistant for the CSVN ^[5]. Elke's and Tony's son Sjoerd already shares his parents chess enthusiasm and made it in the Dutch chess news, at age nine becoming Brabant chess champion in his age category ^[6].

		Fan Yang, a Chinese computer scientist and C and C++ system programmer, currently research assistant at the University of Alberta, where she defended her Ph.D thesis on Pattern Databases under the supervision of Joe Culberson and Robert Holte in 2010 ^[1] . She holds a Master and Bachelor in computer science from Beijing University of Chemical Technology. As member of the University of Alberta Games group ^[2] , she is interested in the area of artificial intelligence, specifically search algorithms, and her thesis project focused on heuristic search and the main theme in her thesis research was to find more accurate heuristic functions defined by abstractions ^[3]. Her extracurricular activities include swimming and playing badminton ^[4].

a Swiss computer scientist and programmer, known in the computer chess scene for her three Clones of Crafty in 1998/99, Voyager ^[1], LaGrande and LaPetite ^[2] ^[3].

Copyright

Müller did not grasp Crafty's Copyright statement, but apparently took remarks by Robert Hyatt like in his reply to Ren Wu, January 26, 1999, concerning code reuse and not reinventing the wheel as alibi for her chess programming ^[4]:

This is a basic tenet of software engineering called 'code reuse'. Why should I pay you to write something from scratch and take a year, if you can take something that exists and modify it to do the same thing in a month? And then I don't have as much trouble debugging and testing, since it is mostly already done... that's not a bad side to this... Of course occasionally starting over is a good thing. But not starting from 'scratch'. IE if you don't know what has already been tried, you will re-invent the same bad wheels over and over and probably follow the same footsteps many before you did... software engineering wants to avoid that 'reinvention' problem...

Robert Hyatt further on the copyright problem ^[5]:

My primary requirement is that if something is done to crafty to make it 'better', then that 'something' must be as public as the original code was. Because many have contributed bits and pieces... Eugene, George, Steffen, Mark, SJE, and many others that are to numerous to mention. Seems unfair that they modify what I did, then they make their stuff public, and then someone else takes _all_ of this and purports it to be 'original'. I suppose it has to do with 'national morals' or whatever, ie the software piracy problem in China, to name but one.

		Giulia Costantini, an Italian computer scientist and lecturer at Hogeschool Rotterdam. She holds a M.Sc. in CS from Ca' Foscari University of Venice in 2010, and finished her Ph.D. in CS at University of Eindhoven in 2013. Her research has been focused on a particular technique of static analysis of computer programs, named abstract interpretation. Such technique heavily relies on mathematical concepts and its purpose is to prove the correctness of programs in advance of execution. In 2010 while affiliated with Ca' Foscari University of Venice, she was involved in the design of the open-source programming language Casanova ^[1] ^[2] for developing Real-time strategy games, introduced at the Advances in Computer Games 13 conference in Tilburg, 2011 ^[3].

a German computer scientist, who wrote her Master's thesis at Chemnitz University of Technology on the topic of Knowledge processing from Endgame Tablebases ^[1]. Her approach performed a tree search to classify positions and to merge nodes belonging to the same class to reduce the search tree. She implemented the KQNKQ-endgame in rule-based Prolog.
