		AliBaba, an experimental chess engine by Dennis Breuker written for testing various hashing algorithms and replacement schemes as subject of his Ph.D. thesis Memory versus Search in Games ^[1]. With the permission of the author, a modified open source version was made available by Dann Corbit ^[2], later adopted to WinBoard by Jim Ablett ^[3]. AliBaba uses a 16x12 board and applies PVS alpha-beta with late move reductions within the obligatory iterative deepening framework with aspiration windows.

		Bestia, a Chess Engine Communication Protocol compliant chess engine written by George Lyapko in Pascal and compiled with Delphi ^[1], first released in July 2000 ^[2], with executables to run under Windows, and more recently, to x86-64 Mac OS ^[3]. Beside the transposition table, Bestia features a pawn hash table, and is able to learn from its failures ^[4] ^[5]. Bestia participated at three Hungarian Chessprogram Open, and won two times operated by Gábor Szõts, the MASPV 2001 and the MASPV 2003, both with a 100% score.

		Calculon, named after the Futurama character, is a Java chess engine developed by Barry Smith. It is open source, licensed under the Apache License, Version 2.0 and currently hosted at GitHub ^[1]. Calculon is UCI compatible, uses bitboards as basic data structure, and applies Negamax alpha-beta. The engine regularly plays on ICC under the name CalculonX and has Blitz/Standard ratings there around the 1750 mark ^[2] .

		Cipollino, a private chess engine ^[1] by Giancarlo Delli Colli in dependence on the fictional character from Gianni Rodari's eponymous Tale of Cipollino also known under its 1957 renamed title The Adventures of the Little Onion ^[2], who fights the unjust treatment of his fellow vegetable townfolk by the fruit royalty. Cipollino played the CIPS 2007 with 5½/6 ^[3] ^[4], with hindsight zeroed on the G 6 tournament page ^[5]. Concerning engine originality of Olivier Deville's ChessWar tournaments, Cipollino was suspected as Fruit derivative by Christopher Conkie ^[6], and according to Olivier Deville first forfeited and later reinstated after Giancarlo Delli Colli provided Christopher Conkie with some source code for examination, and nothing suspicious has been found ^[7] ^[8] ^[9].

		Critter, an UCI compatible cross-platform chess engine by Richard Vida, executables freely available for personal use to run under Windows, Linux, Android and Mac OS ^[1] . Starting in late 2008, Critter was first written in Object Pascal compiled with Delphi, now available as open source engine ^[2] ^[3] , and was ported to C / C++ in 2009 ^[4] . It consistently evolved through various board representations from 0x88 to bitboards, as acknowledged by Richard Vida, also incorporating ideas from strong open source programs like Ippolit ^[5] , to a world class engine which achieved top five of most engine rating lists ^[6] .In 2012, Critter had its over the board debut at the ICT 2012, where it became strong runner-up behind the Rybka cluster.

Description

Critter applies a principal variation search with aspiration windows, null move pruning ^[8] and other state of the art forward pruning, reduction and extension techniques, such as the Botvinnik-Markoff extensions ^[9] . It can search in parallel with up to eight threads ^[10] , supports Gaviota tablebases ^[11] , and is able to play Chess960 ^[12] . Critter features a tapered eval with a score pair class and overloaded operators ^[13] ^[14] , and blockage detection in late endgames ^[15] .

		Deep Thought, was a computer chess machine built at Carnegie Mellon University in the 1980's, the predecessor to Deep Blue. The project was initially started 1985 as Chiptest by the computer science doctoral students Feng-hsiung Hsu and Thomas Anantharaman. Murray Campbell, former co-developer of HiTech, joined the ChipTest team a few month later - followed by Andreas Nowatzyk, Mike Browne and Peter Jansen. The program was named Deep Thought after the fictional computer of the same name ^[1] .

Achievements

In 1988 Deep Thought and Grandmaster Tony Miles shared first place in the Software Toolworks Open in Los Angeles. Deep Thought had a 2745 performance rating, and moved its U.S. Chess Federation (USCF) rating up to 2551, and qualified for the $10,000 Fredkin Intermediate Prize as the first computer to achieve a USCF performance rating of 2500 over a set of 25 contiguous games in human tournaments ^[4]

		DisasterArea, an UCI compliant chess engine written by Jochen Peussner, started in 2011 from scratch to learn more about bitboards, first released in November 2014 as 32-bit Windows engine ^[1]. DesasterArea can be configured to control its search and evaluation, for instance, one can switch off all selective search enhancements such as various extensions, null move pruning and late move reductions, to get a basic principal variation search ^[2]. DisasterArea-1.65, released in July 2016, comes with an improved SMP search, is able to probe Syzygy-EGTBs, has more effective singular extensions, and a "correct" SEE considering pins and promotions ^[3]

Disaster Area is the fictional rock band from the Gagrakacka Mind Zones in The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, the second book of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy comedy science fiction trilogy by Douglas Adams.

		Disney's Aladdin Chess Adventures, a Disney's Aladdin licensed Windows chess game that teaches chess to beginning chess aficionados. Disney's Aladdin Chess Adventures was published in October 2004 by Sierra Entertainment Inc. and its holdings company Vivendi Games, developed by Fluent Entertainment, Inc. ^[1] , founded by former Mindscape product manager Donald W. Laabs, with John Merlino as associate producer, and David Bringhurst as software designer involved. The chess engine is based on WChess 2000 by David Kittinger. The game features tutorials, 3D boards, pieces and backgrounds, player vs. player and computer vs. player, and adventure modes, where players earn chess pieces and magical items by defeating opponents, solving puzzles, playing mini-matches, and winning speed trials ^[2] .

		Faile, a Chess Engine Communication Protocol compatible open source chess program under the MIT License by Adrien M. Regimbald, written in C and last updated as version 1.4.4 in 2001. It is a good example of didactic programming, containing features similar to that of Gerbil, coded in a way much more digestible for beginners. Faile is the name of a character from the popular Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. Adrien wanted to use a different name from the series, but it was taken, and he eventually settled on Faile ^[1].

Faile uses a 12x12 mailbox board representation plus piece lists, negamax alpha-beta with transposition table, killer- and history heuristic, captures ordered by material gain, check extensions, null move pruning with mate threat extensions, and quiescence search inside an iterative deepening framework. Evaluation considers material, piece-square tables, pawn structure, and some rook and king safety terms.

The static evaluation parameters of Fischerle are amenable to external fine tuning based on a concept of so-called efb (evaluation factor block) files, thus enabling the user to influence, within certain bounds, Fischerle’s playing style (e. g. to prefer closed positions, etc.). Fischerle comes with its own, small opening book, covering about 220K positions and some 540K moves. Fischerle supports pondering via its UCI interface.

Performance

According to extensive test tournaments, Fischerle is sufficiently well equipped with chess wit in order to compete in the CCRL 40/40 Elo 2250-2350 range. Fischerle 0.9.70 SE has been ranked at place 235 of the CCRL 40/40 list with a CCRL 40/40 Elo score of 2291 (March 25, 2017).

Latest Version

Fischerle 0.9.80 SE (March 24, 2017) - a slightly more aggressive forward pruning scheme is now applied; quiescence search has been mildly refined (adding, in particular, delta pruning); the piece value assigned to bishops and the bishop pair bonus have been slightly reduced; king safety ealuation has been refined; the mate approaching scheme has been enhanced.

Auto-da-Fé

		Fischerle ^[3] is named after a famous character of Elias Canetti’s novel „Die Blendung“ („Auto-da-Fé“) ^[4] ^[5] , which plays in Vienna ^[6] around protagonist Peter Kien, a middle-aged philologist and Sinologist: Siegfried Fischerle ^[7] , a Jewish ^[8] hunchbacked dwarf and pander, is a chess addict whose dream is it to go to America to challenge chess champion José Raúl Capablanca in order to get rich and famous. Canetti wrote his novel in the years 1930/31, coincidentally more than one decade before Nazi German Oberfeldwebel Siegfried Fischer was decorated with the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross, Jewish artist and poet Peter Kien died in Auschwitz concentration camp, and more than two decades before chess genius Bobby Fischer entered the international chess scene ^[9] .

		Gaviota, a Chess Engine Communication Protocol and UCI compatible chess engine written by FM Miguel A. Ballicora in the C programming language. When It was released in 2001, it was the first Argentinian engine available. Gaviota supports its own endgame tablebases, book, and can use several processors (SMP). It has the ability to learn by remembering book lines and positions that were not good. Gaviota avoids them in following games. There are versions for Linux, Android, Windows, and Mac OS (0.86) ^[1]. The Gaviota team is completed by tester Adam Hair ^[2].

Etymology

Miguel A. Ballicora on the name of his program ^[8]:

Gaviota means "seagull", from the story of Jonathan Livingston Seagull. The spirit of the engine reflects the free spirit of the fictional bird, of flying for fun and excitement, not for food. In Spanish, the book was translated to Juan Salvador Gaviota. In addition, my wife's nickname is Gaby, so it has double meaning.

Gaviota played various ACCA Americas' Computer Chess Championships, CCT Tournaments and ACCA World Computer Rapid Chess Championships, further the IGWT 2013 and multiple TCEC seasons.

		Ghost, a Chess Engine Communication Protocol compatible, free chess engine written in C++ by Philipp Claßen, supported by his brother Michael Claßen ^[1] . The name was taken from the name of Wolf Larsen's seal-hunting schooner in the novel The Sea-Wolf by Jack London. Ghost started its life in about 2000 as subject of a school project, the first version appeared in early 2001, playing online at Internet Chess Club ^[2] , and later in rating list tournaments such as CCRL ^[3] . Subsequent versions were Ghost 1, Ghost 2, and Ghost 3. Executables are available for Windows and Linux platforms. Likely, the current Ghost is bitboard based, due to the much faster 64-bit executable.
The Ghost ^[4]

Ghost 1

Ghost 1 performed NegaScout, IID, killer- and history heuristics, recursive null move pruning with depth reduction of 3, razoring and futility pruning, and a unique technique to detect perpetual checks. It further used the oracle approach of pre-scanned piece-square tables at the root ^[5] .

Ghost 2

The second version, first released in 2003, is a MTD(f) searcher, further utilizing late move reductions, adaptive null move pruning with R of 2 or 3 plies, ETC, and a unique pin detection extension. Ghost 2 has a safer perpetual check detection than Ghost 1, and usus local history counters ^[6] .

Ghost 3

Still using MTD(f), the search has been rewritten from scratch to support parallelism using work stealing provided by the Threading Building Blocks library. The stable version 3.1 was released on May 30, 2017 ^[7].

		Godot, an open source chess engine by Ulysse Carion, written in Java, and licensed under the GNU General Public License. It was subject of a project work Creating a Chess-Playing Computer Program at La Jolla High School in 2013 ^[1], with which he participated in the Senior Division of Mathematics & Software of the 2013 California State Science Fair ^[2], honorable mentioned ^[3]. While the goal was to create an original program that uses a carefully-selected combination of the hundreds of ways to assault the challenge of teaching a computer to play chess ^[4], a large amount of Godot's code is based on Stef Luijten's Winglet and Alberto Ruibal's Carballo. The name Godot comes from Samuel Beckett's play Waiting For Godot because the author found himself waiting indefinite periods of time for Godot to play a move ^[5].

		Golem, (ChessGolem) a Chess Engine Communication Protocol compliant chess program written by Gianluigi Masciulli in C. Starting the project in 1999, the first beta appeared in January 2000 ^[1], when Gianluigi just implemented the quiescence search in an "exploding way" ^[2]. The first public release was in May 2000 ^[3]. With Gianluigi as founding member of the G 6, the Italian Chess Programmer Group, Golem played all the early G6 tournaments, four Italian Computer Chess Championships (CIPS) from 2001 until 2007, and the CCC 2008 and CCC 2008 Chess Computer Cups.

a WinBoard and UCI compliant chess engine by Klaus Friedel, written in C++, first released in March 2002, while the development started as recently as September 2001 ^[1]. Hagrid is a bitboard engine and performs Rotated Bitboards to determine sliding piece attacks, while its successor Snitch keeps the plain 8x8 board and piece-lists, using attack tables ^[2].

		Holmes, a Chess Engine Communication Protocol compliant chess engine by Andreas Herrmann written in Delphi. Holmes, later renamed to BlackBishop ^[1] , played the IPCCC 2001, IPCCC 2003, and the ICT 2002 under its initial name. Holmes applies NegaScout with Null Move Pruning, and performs Move generation with the help of piece tables.
