		Brause, a Crafty clone by Steffen A. Jakob ^[1]. Before Steffen restarted the development of his own chess program Hossa in 1998, he ran Crafty along with a special opening book assembled by himself under the nick Brause on several Internet Chess Server ^[2], especially to examine the Halloween Gambit (Müller-Schulze Gambit) in the Four Knights Game ^[3] ^[4].

		Cheese, a Chess Engine Communication Protocol and UCI compliant free chess engine by Patrice Duhamel, written in C. The development started in early 2006, using rotated bitboards and alpha-beta search, improving rapidly, and first released in October 2007 as version 1.0. Since 2012, one can expect yearly updates with steady improvements. Since version 1.8 in March 2016, Cheese is able to play Chess960 (FRC). It is available for all major platforms and operating systems, Windows, Linux, Mac OS and Android ^[1].

Chessnut,
a microcomputer chess program by Geoffrey Bulmer which participated at the European MCC 1981, the European MCC 1983 running on a modified Acorn Computer with a 6502 processor ^[1], and the WMCCC 1984 running on a Commodore 64, where it won the title of Amateur World Microcomputer Chess Champion by default ^[2]. An improved version of Chessnut was also commercially released in 1981 by Acornsoft as Atom Chess for the Acorn Atom ^[3].

		Chexa, a private Chess Engine Communication Protocol compliant chess engine written by Mauro Riccardi in C ^[1]. Chexa played the CCC 2008 and CCC 2009 Italian Chess Computer Cups, the IOCSC 2010 and IOCSC 2012 Italian Open Chess Software Cups, the CCT15, and won the IGT 2013 of original engines. As stated on Chexa's G 6 site, beside working on a parallel search, Mauro is in the process to find the right balance of passed pawn and candidate values, since too often Chexa has overestimated their good locations, and is about to introduce a table to evaluate pawn islands ^[2].

		Cipollino, a private chess engine ^[1] by Giancarlo Delli Colli in dependence on the fictional character from Gianni Rodari's eponymous Tale of Cipollino also known under its 1957 renamed title The Adventures of the Little Onion ^[2], who fights the unjust treatment of his fellow vegetable townfolk by the fruit royalty. Cipollino played the CIPS 2007 with 5½/6 ^[3] ^[4], with hindsight zeroed on the G 6 tournament page ^[5]. Concerning engine originality of Olivier Deville's ChessWar tournaments, Cipollino was suspected as Fruit derivative by Christopher Conkie ^[6], and according to Olivier Deville first forfeited and later reinstated after Giancarlo Delli Colli provided Christopher Conkie with some source code for examination, and nothing suspicious has been found ^[7] ^[8] ^[9].

Description

Cupcake's move generator is almost identical to Bruja's, Dan's earlier C++ program, but its speed is about half ^[2]. Cupcake utilizes rotated bitboards for sliding piece attacks. The Java-bitscan uses the 64-bit De Bruijn multiplication.

Search

Search is PVS with transposition table inside an iterative deepening framework with aspiration windows in conjunction with null move pruning, LMR, and check extensions.

Evaluation

Cupcake applies a tapered eval for a smooth transition between the game phases and interpolates between the aggregated opening and endgame scores. Beside material balance of point values and piece-square tables, Cupcake considers mobility, king safety, and pawn structure including passed pawns.

		Fruit, until Version 2.1 open source, is a groundbreaking UCI compatible chess engine developed by primary author Fabien Letouzey. It made its first appearance to the public in March 2004, when Fruit was a basic program with a very simple evaluation and basic search. However, since then it made progress adding about 100 Elo to each new release (1.5, 2.0, 2.1 and Fruit 2.2) ^[1]. The release of Fruit until version 2.1 under the GNU General Public License was a "revolution" in computer chess in 2005 - an open source engine was "suddenly" competitive with the long time leading programs Shredder and Junior, as demonstrated at the WCCC 2005, where Fruit became runner up behind Zappa. After the strong Massy 2005 over the board debut, and the great success of Reykjavik, where Fabien Letouzey met his professional colleagues, he decided to close the source ^[2] and to go commercial ^[3] - while Fruit derivatives have already appeared based on the source code of Fruit 2.1, most notably Toga ^[4] by Thomas Gaksch, and Gambit Fruit by Ryan Benitez, who in late 2005 joint forces with Fabian for the commercial endeavor. Fabien finished his commercial computer chess career so far in 2007 ^[5]. Fruit 2.3+ is non GPL with full rights given to Ryan Benitez who continued the Fruit development porting it to bitboards ^[6], while Fruit 2.1 is now owned by the Free Software Foundation ^[7], released as GNU Chess 6 ^[8].

Tournament Play

Fruit had its strong debut at CCT7, February 2005, and over the board at Massy 2005 in June 2005, with the then surprising shared second place, tied with Chess Wizard behind AnMon. After the mentioned breakthrough at the WCCC 2005 in Reykjavík, Fruit played the DOCCC 2005, operated by new book author Jeroen Noomen, who short later left the team for Rybka, the IPCCC 2005 b, CCT8 and the DOCCC 2006. Fruit continued to play CCT Tournaments from CCT10 in 2008.

Innovations

Fruit was and still is one of the most influential didactic open source programs. It first uses a 16x12 Vector attack board representation, since Version 1.5 a 16x16 board to have a symmetric treatment of files and ranks ^[11] . Its structure and C source code was very clean and apparently bug-free due to runtime checking a lot of preconditions using debug asserts. While late move reductions (LMR) might be used in other programs before, Fabien's history based implementation in conjunction with history leaf pruning made LMR very popular. Another Fruit innovation, despite not absolutely new and already a known issue, and related to what is mentioned in evaluation philosophy, was tapered evaluation to avoid discontinuity ^[12] .

Fruit Team

Beside Fabien Letouzey as primary author and opening book author Marc Lacrosse, Ryan Benitez joined the Fruit-Team in December 2005. Before he developed Gambit Fruit with some interesting changes on the basis of the last open-source-version 2.1 ^[13]. Joachim Rang was the main tester of Fruit since its first public appearance, tuned parameters, and tested evaluation and search features ^[14] .

Fruit 64

Ryan Benitez continued the development on the non public Fruit in 2007 ^[16]. He converted the board representation from vector attacks to bitboards, and naturally, Fruit has become a new evaluation to go along with that ^[17]. Fruit by Fabien Letouzey and Ryan Benitez played the CCT10, the CCT11, where it became shared winner along with Bright after the later Rybka disqualification ^[18], and the CCT13 in 2011.

Influence

Many programmers took a lot of ideas and implementation details from Fruit, as noted by Vasik Rajlich ^[19] :

Alexander Schmidt:

The increase in playing strength of the latest chess engines is unbelieveable. We have since some time with Fruit 2.1 by Fabien Letouzey a very strong open source engine. Do you see a relation between the published sources of such a strong engine and the increase of strength in computer chess in general? How much influence do the ideas of Fruit have on the future of computerchess?

Vasik Rajlich:

Yes, the publication of Fruit 2.1 was huge. Look at how many engines took a massive jump in its wake: Rybka, Hiarcs, Fritz, Zappa, Spike, List, and so on. I went through the Fruit 2.1 source code forwards and backwards and took many things.

Fruit Reloaded

In March 2014, ten years after the initial Fruit 1.0 release, Daniel Mehrmann initiated a "let's update Fruit" called Fruit Reloaded ^[20]. With some help from Ryan Benitez, the aim is to add SMP to Fruit and upgrade search and evaluation with modern techniques ^[21] ^[22]. Simultaneously, Fabien Letouzey waved goodbye to Fruit and published his new open source engine Senpai, also with Ryan Benitez and Joachim Rang involved ^[23].

		Fruit Reloaded, an independent fork of Fruit 2.1, started by Daniel Mehrmann in 2012 ^[1] as a "let's update Fruit" project, published in March 2014 as announced by Fabien Letouzey ^[2]. Like its predecessor, Fruit Reloaded is UCI compliant and open source licensed under the GPL v3 ^[3]. Sources are available from a GitHub repository ^[4]. With some help from Ryan Benitez, the aim was to add a parallel search and to upgrade search and evaluation with recent techniques, still following the clean coding style of Fabien's work. Beside newly added, tweaked or tuned selectivity and evaluation features, Fruit Reloaded can now probe Nalimov Tablebases and Scorpio Bitbases, configurable by appropriate UCI options. Binaries are available for Windows, Linux, Mac OS X and Android platforms, hosted by Steve Maughan's Computer Chess Programming ^[5].

		Gambit Fruit, a GPL licensed, Fruit and Toga derivative open source engine written by Ryan Benitez in C++. It has some interesting changes primarily based on the last open-source-version Fruit 2.1 ^[1], the goal being a fun free and aggressive chess engine ^[2]. Short after its release in end of 2005, Ryan joined forces with Fabien Letouzey and Joachim Rang for a commercial Fruit, and incorporated Gambit Fruit features into Fruit 2.2 and subsequent versions.

		Kiwi, a Chess Engine Communication Protocol compliant open source chess engine under the GNU General Public License ^[1], written in C++ by Alessandro Scotti. Executables are available for Windows, Linux and Mac OS. Kiwi uses bitboards as basic board representation, and generates sliding piece attacks with rotated bitboards. It performs MTD(f) with null move pruning, killer and history heuristic, and transposition table. The evaluation considers development, Fruit like mobility, and pawn structure utilizing a pawn hash table, with focus on passed pawns and pawn races. Kiwi played two over the board tournaments in 2005, it became runner-up at the CIPS 2005 behind Delfi, and became third at the Chess Computer Cup 2005.

Its development started in 2004, influenced by FirstChess and TSCP ^[1]. Lime represents the board with a 12x12 mailbox and piece-lists ^[2], and features PVS with null move pruning and fractional extensions ^[3]. Lime played the CCT9, CCT11 and the CCT15, and over the board the CPT 2009.

		Madeleine, a WinBoard and UCI compatible chess engine by Luigi Marco Ripamonti, first released in October 2002 ^[1]. Madeleine is bitboard based, and uses a series of common search techniques such as negamax alpha-beta with transpostion table, null move pruning, quiescence search, killer heuristic, and history heuristic. Its evaluation uses a pawn hash table, further it can probe Nalimov Tablebases, and GAFS by Guido Antonelli (Guido Antonelli Finali di Scacchi) ^[2] ^[3].

		Small Potato, (unches) a Chess Engine Communication Protocol compatible open source chess program by Alejandro Dubrovsky under the GNU General Public License ^[1], first released (as Unches) in December 2000. After experience with MTD(f) and standard alpha-beta, the Small Potato sticks with NegaScout inside an iterative deepening framework with aspiration windows, further utilizing transposition table, quiescence search, null move pruning and history move ordering. Move generation is implemented using a 0x88 board. Small Potato participated at various Australasian National Computer Chess Championships.

		Stockfish, an UCI compatible open source chess engine developed by Tord Romstad, Marco Costalba, Joona Kiiski, and Gary Linscott ^[1] . Marco forked the project from version 2.1 of Tord's strong engine Glaurung, first announced by Marco in November 8, 2008 ^[2] , and in early 2009 Joona's Smaug, a further Glaurung 2.2 derivative, was incorporated ^[3] . Starting out among the top twenty engines, Stockfish has quickly climbed in strength. The name "Stockfish" reflects the ancestry of the engine. Tord is Norwegian and Marco Italian, and there is a long history of stockfish trade from Norway to Italy (to Marco's home town of Vicenza, in fact). Stockfish also references another famous "little fish", Rybka.

Science versus Commerce?

There is a wide range of opinions about strong open source chess engines affecting commercial and competitive interests, as well as monetary interests from computer chess users, who obtain a top engine for free. The scientific and social value of strong open source programs is indisputable. The teamwork effort to share ideas and knowledge to write one of the strongest programs, which everybody may follow and share to learn and play for free, is definitely a challenging and motivating task, gathering both admiration and enviousness. Obviously, professional programmers of commercial chess programs are not that enthusiastic about the development, and need to improve further and/or focus more on secondary features or other business concepts like on-line play and/or user interface issues rather than on pure playing strength.

Also many hobbyist chess programmers feel in antagonism as well, not only caused by Stockfish with its highly respected authors, and before by Fruit and slightly Crafty, but from Ippolit and all its successors by pseudonymous authors and disputed origin. The implications on commercial and competitive computer chess are not quite clear, but presumably the decrease in number of participants of over the board tournaments will progress and clone suspicions may float like a Sword of Damocles over the scene, whether programmers took ideas too literally or not.

Fishtest

The Stockfish Testing Framework called Fishtest ^[5] is a web application written by Gary Linscott ^[6] ^[7] mainly in Python under the Pyramid Application Development Framework ^[8] , to distribute games across different machines to reduce the test latency and increment throughput. Started in early 2013 with Stockfish 3.0, Fishtest has hundreds of contributors, as of May 2014, 744 testers and 52 developers ^[9] active in testing ideas and tweaks ^[10] , to make Stockfish the strongest open source or even chess program of the world ^[11] .

Evaluation Guide

Since April 2017 the interactive Stockfish Evaluation Guide is available to explore Stockfish's evaluation with a JavaScript implementation running in a browser ^[12] . One may enter a FEN string of a position, to get the resulting score of the main evaluation term considering the game phases within its tapered evaluation, and may navigate through the tree of subterms and features with its particular characteristics for the given position ^[13] .

Tournament Play

Stockfish is top contender of the prestigious Thoresen Chess Engines Competition (TCEC), reaching the superfinals since season 4, losing season 4 from Houdini and season 5 from Komodo TCEC, both narrow matches with 23 - 25, but won the season 6 superfinal versus Komodo 7 conveniently with +13=45-6 and 35½ - 28½. Successor Stockfish 141214 qualified for the TCEC Season 7 Superfinal in December 2014, versus Komodo again, this time with the better end for Komodo 8 successor 1333 with 33½ - 30½. About one year later at TCEC Season 8, again Komodo and Stockfish qualified for the TCEC Season 8 Superfinal, finished with 53½ - 46½ in favour to Komodo 9.3x ^[14] , but in the following year Stockfish 8 won the superfinal conveniently this time versus the new Houdini 5 with 54½ - 45½.

GM+Rybka vs. Stockfish

On July 19, 2014, Stockfish 5 played a four game match versus Daniel Naroditsky plus Rybka 3 (2008), 45 minutes plus 30-second increment. Stockfish won 3½ - ½ ^[15] ^[16] . A few weeks later the experiment continued with Hikaru Nakamura in Burlingame, California ^[17] . Supported two games by Rybka 3, Nakamura lost ½ - 1½, two games with pawn odds (Stockfish both Black without h- and b-pawn) ended ½ - 1½ in favour to Stockfish 5 as well. It played the latest development build compiled for OS X running on a 3 GHz 8-Core Mac Pro ^[18] .

		Stoofvlees, an experimental chess engine by Gian-Carlo Pascutto. The evaluation function consists of a set of feature recognizers coupled to a neural network, which was trained with an oracle ^[1], that is the evaluation was entirely automatically learned from "watching" Grandmaster games ^[2]. The results were incorporated into Deep Sjeng ^[3]. Stoofvlees played the ICT 2007 operated by Elke van Vlierberghe, along with its relative Deep Sjeng.

		SugaR, a Stockfish derivative by Marco Zerbinati. Its appearance first discussed in CCC in October 2014 ^[1], SugaR XPrO 1.2 64-bit 4CPU became Stockfish version top contender in the 2017 CCRL 40/40 rating list ^[2]. As pointed out by Norman Schmidt, SugaR XPrO 1.3, released in September 2017, has additional code not inside the current Stockfish development version, featuring transposition tables with large pages, persistent hash, Cerebellum book, various endgame functions, fortress detection, and various tweaks and UCI options ^[3].

		Vanilla Chess, (Vchess) a WinBoard compliant open source chess engine by Shaun Press, written in C. It features a 0x88 board and an offset move generator with its nested loops over pieces, directions, and for sliding pieces, from the closest to the farthest target square per direction. Its search is vanilla plain alpha-beta with iterative deepening, aspiration windows, history heuristic and transposition table, according to its author, the evaluation is a bit messy ^[1]. Vanilla Chess has been around since 1996, participating in all NC3 events.
