		Computer Chess, (Atari Chess, CXL-4009) a cartridge chess program for Atari 8-bit home computers by Larry Wagner (Game AI, with the help of Julio Kaplan ^[1]) and Bob Whitehead, initially the development version or prototype of Video Chess, released for the Atari 2600 in 1978 ^[2]. In 1979 a revised version of the program was released by Atari as Computer Chess, adapted for the Atari 400/800. A joystick was used to move the pieces.

		Intelligent Chess, (SciSys Intelligent Chess) a dedicated chess computer and early forerunner of both chess database and chess display system based on a system called Tolinka by Barry Savage, a 2D Graphics Board displayed on a Television screen with flashing square features. Further, games along with audio commentaries could be stored and retrieved using an integrated Stereo audio cassette tape recorder. Intelligent Chess was developed by Philidor Software, and manufactured by SciSys for the associated Intelligent Games Ltd., forerunner of Intelligent Software, released in 1980.

Authors

Designers: David Levy and Kevin O’Connell ^[2]

Concept and design of Intelligent Chess were by David Levy and Kevin O’Connell. The 8 KiB 6502 program was based on the Chess Champion Super System III by Mike Johnson and the then latest version of the Philidor playing program, according to Mike Watters mainly written by Mark Taylor ^[3]. The circuit design was by Barry Savage, inventor of the Tolinka display system ^[4].

		SABA Videoplay 20, (Videocart Nr. 20: Schach) a ROM cartridge video chess game by the now defunct German electronics manufacturer SABA for the Fairchild Channel F and licensed video game consoles with F8 processor, such as the SABA Videoplay ^[1]. The chess cartridge was first released in 1979 ^[2]. The game, according to Torsten Othmer, an exclusive in-house development of SABA ^[3], today available as ROM data and disassembled source code, is playable under the Multi Emulator Super System MESS ^[4].

		Video Chess, a chess program for the Atari 2600 Video game console released by Atari in 1978, developed by Larry Wagner (Game AI, with the help of Julio Kaplan ^[1]) and Bob Whitehead (Graphics) in 6502 Assembly. According to Larry Wagner, Video Chess was developed as a direct result of a customer who complained that the (original) Video Computer System box showed a picture of chess, but that no chess game existed ^[2]. Bank switching ROMs was pioneered for earlier prototypes of Video Chess that were larger than four kilobytes, however the released version ended up fitting the standard 4K size ^[3].

Venetian Blinds

The up to eight pieces per row exceeded the sprite limitations, since the Atari 2600 was only able to display three sprites in a row. Bob Whitehead developed a pioneering "venetian blinds" ^[5] animation technique, an algorithm that horizontally reused and vertically interlaced sprites several times while rendering each frame, to give the illusion that the system had more than the maximum number of sprites allowed by the hardware ^[6].

		Videopac C 7010, a chess module for the Philips Videopac G7000 second generation Video game console, released in 1982. The C 7010 module had its own NSC800 CMOS microprocessor ^[1] , which is Z80-compatible ^[2] . The program is based on Gambiet 80 by Wim Rens and Microtrend ^[3] .

		Wii Chess, a chess program for Nintendo's Wii console. Wii's chess engine is based on Loop Express by Fritz Reul. In his Ph.D. thesis New Architectures in Computer Chess, Reul mentioned Wii Chess as implementation of Non-Bitboard Architectures based on a 15x12 Board representation due to lower performance and the 32-bit bandwidth of Nintendo’s PowerPC 750 CL based main processor ^[1]. Reul further acknowledged thesis supervisor Jaap van den Herik who set up the contact to Nintendo in 2007, which implemented Reul's source code successfully in Wii Chess ^[2]. Wii Chess was released on January 18, 2008 in Europe as part of the Ultimate Board Game Collection ^[3] and on September 30, 2008 under the name Tsūshin Taikyoku: World Chess in Japan. No release in North America or Australia has been announced, making it the only game in the Wii series that was not released in these countries ^[4].
