Algir,
a chess program by Alexander Pokrovski, which played the First Soviet Computer-Chess Championship 1988 in Ulan-Ude, 3rd place, 3/5, only losing from Centaur. The tournament report mentions Algir running on an IBM PC, written in 8086 assembly, 32 KB, performing an alpha-beta search with 10-100 pos/sec ^[1]. Further, Algir played the First International Chess-Computer Tournament in the USSR 1989 in Moscow ^[2].

		Atlas, an early chess program written in 1967 by Alex Bell at Atlas Computer Laboratory, Chilton. It was basically a resurrected, cleaned up Algol version of Bell's and Barricelli's old program from the early 60s to test evolutionary theories, which had an evaluation function based purely on mobility - at that time the first fully legal chess program to run in England ^[1], and likely also the base of Barricelli's WCCC 1974 entry Freedom. Atlas, running on an ICL Atlas computer ^[2], looked three plies ahead with alpha-beta, and would accept almost any captures in that depth with weighting on swaps of the more powerful pieces, i.e. it would always swap a queen for a queen. If no captures were present it prepared to castle or mini-maximised its mobility. A slight modification prevented it from moving its queen in the first 5 moves ^[3]. Atlas played a few sparring games against Lancaster ^[4], John Scott's program, then dubbed "Scott" ^[5], and largely suffered from horizon effect.

Move Generation

A description of Atlas' move generation techniques along with a mate-in-two solver is given with Algol source code listing in Games Playing with Computers, 3.1 Chess ^[7]. Atlas uses two distinct 8x8 boards [1:65] and piece lists [O:16] for white and black man with identical piece coding, passing the boards per reference as 'mymanin' or 'opponents' dependent on side to move. Pre-calculated rook and bishop tables contain one vector of direction increments, i.e. east (+1), west (-1), north (+8), and south (-8) for rooks, and further for each square a vector of ray-direction terminal destination squares. The embedded routine 'rookorbishopmove' in scope of the outer move generation routine loops over all four directions, gets increment and terminal target square from the rook or bishop table, and iterates the destination along the ray. Inside the ray-loop it tests whether the target is occupied by an own man, to terminate the ray-loop, otherwise it stores the move, and then tests to break after a capture or even an illegal king capture with an extra exit 'cutoff'.

Master

In the early 70s, Atlas evolved to Master in collaboration with Peter Kent, and later with John Birmingham and chess expert John Waldron, while Alex Bell finally left Chilton.

		Atlas, an UCI compliant chess engine by Andrés Manzanares Campillo written in C++, with executables running under Linux and Windows. The development of Atlas started in 2004, initially representing the board as 0x88 vector attacks mailbox along with piece-lists, supporting WinBoard, and written in C. 		Bismark, an UCI compliant open source chess engine written by Evgeny Shtranvasser in C++, recent version hosted by Bitbucket ^[1]. Bismark's board is represented as two-dimensional 8x8 array of squares and a vector of pieces. The engine applies negamax alpha-beta PVS with null move pruning, transposition table and a pure capture quiescence search within the iterative deepening loop. Beside material as dominating term, Bismark's evaluation aggregates values of middlegame and endgame piece-square tables along with king tropism, finally tapered by current game phase using float arithmetic. Further, Bismark considers various pawn structure terms, with appropriate bonuses for passers and candidates and penalties for doubled pawns and islands, as well as beneficial piece positions such as knight outposts, rook on open or semi-open file and bishop pair ^[2].

		BremboCE, a WinBoard compliant chess engine written by Gianluca Cisana. BremboCE was initially written in C, and first released in February 2002, after Gianluca studied Tom Kerrigan's TSCP and learned how to program a chess engine ^[1]. It had its not too bad tournament debut at CIPS 2002 with 3/6. The latest C-version 0.4 from August 2002 is still available for download . The engine name is based upon the river Brembo in the Province of Bergamo, situated near the author's home ^[2].

Java

After a gap of seven years, in 2009, Gianluca continued the development porting BremboCE from C to Java, running either as standalone WinBoard engine, or as Java applet as part of a web page under control of the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) - in a process separated from the web browser. BremboCE keeps a board array and uses negamax alpha-beta with quiescence considering captures and promotions. The Java engine played the 4th Chess Computer Cup 2009 with 2½/6, winning from Golem and Joker.

		Carballo, an open source chess engine by Alberto Alonso Ruibal, written in Java, licensed under the GNU General Public License, and first released in 2009 ^[1]. Carballo supports the UCI protocol, and a HTML5 based GUI dubbed Mobialia Chess ^[2], developed by Lukas Laag with the Google Web Toolkit (GWT) using the Vectomatic SVG library ^[3] ^[4]. Board Representation

Carballo is a bitboard engine and applies magic bitboards to determine sliding piece attacks. Staged move generation along with move ordering is controlled by an iterator object which gets the next move during search, and uses legal move generation. This is so far implemented by making and testing whether pseudo-legal moves leave the own king in check.

Search

The search performs alpha-beta PVS inside the iterative deepening loop with aspiration windows, utilizing a transposition table also in quiescence, verified and indexed by Zobrist Keys. Selectivity considers the wide range of state of the art techniques.

		Delfi, a strong WinBoard and UCI compliant chess engine written by Fabio Cavicchio in Pascal with x86 inline assembly, compiled with Delphi, first released in August 2001 ^[1]. Delfi is distributed commercially within a software suite as Delfi Trainer, along with an own "2.5D" chess GUI, a ergonomic 2D graphics board in Bird's-eye view and pieces with 3D-effect, and a position trainer ^[2] . The pure Winboard/UCI engine with some restrictions is further available for free. Formerly an open source engine, Fabio closed the sources past the still available version 2.51, which has a license allowing modification for personal use ^[3].
Delfi's 2.5D Board ^[4]

Description

Delfi uses the vector attacks approach of a board representation with a 16x16 board, combining the property of the 10x12 board with its surrounding ranks and files with the property that a square difference uniquely maps a vector in the Chebyshev vector space of a chessboard. Delfi applies PVS alpha-beta with null move-, futility- and history pruning. Dual core processors are supported using a parallel search with a shared hash table.

Tournament Play

Delfi won all the six Campionato Italiano per Programmi Scacchistici (CIPS) championships it played, from 2002 until 2007, and further won the Chess Computer Cup 2005, and 2008. At the WCCC 2006 in Turin, Delfi performed with respectable 5½/11.

Description

Board Representation

Diablo is a 0x88 engine with piece-lists to determe vector attacks by 0x88 square difference. It performs pseudo-legal move generation and keeps an attack table per ply - initialized once per node during evaluation, which later speeds up in check detection and static exchange evaluation by lookup.

Search

The search is PVS alpha-beta inside the fractional ply iterative deepening framework without aspiration. The depth-preferred transposition table based on Zobrist hashing is used in the main search only. Beside quiescence, selectivity is due to futility pruning near the tips, null move pruning combined with mate threat extensions, and further fractional extensions for single replies, check, passed pawn to 7th rank and queening. Move ordering takes PV-move, MVV/LVA plus fast SEE for captures, two killers and the history heuristic into account. Internal iterative deepening is applied in case of PV-nodes if no move was found in the transposition table.

Evaluation

Evaluation considers material with piece-square tables, bishop pair, development, center control, mobility of bishops and rooks, in particular considering trapped rooks, rook on open file and on 7th rank. Pawn structure evaluation focuses on passed pawns and further punishes backward and doubled pawns. King safety terms pay attention to an exposed king and pawn shield. Appropriate scores are aggregated in opening and endgame accumulators and finally, if the sum of material is below some late endgame threshold, tapered by the current game phase aka sum of material.

Frenchess,
a massively parallel chess program by Marc-François Baudot, Jean-Christophe Weill, Jean-Luc Seret and Michel Gondran. It played the WCCC 1995 in Shatin, Hong Kong, China, and finished fourth, tied with Deep Blue Prototype.

Frenchess is a parallel chess program which runs on a Cray T3D computer (128 Alpha processors, owned by the Commissariat a l'Energie Atomique located in Grenoble, France). It is written in C and is based on the parallel algorithm described by Jean Christophe Weill in his PhD thesis: ^[2] Alpha-Beta Distribue Avec Droit d'Ainesse (ABDADA). The evaluation relies mostly on an Oracle approach, which introduces strategy and is designed to be rewritten in the CHEVAL (CHess EVAluation Language) evaluation function description language currently under development (but CHEVAL will probably not be ready for the World Championships). Frenchess is written with the support of the "Direction des Etudes et Recherches (DER) d'Electrique de France (EDF)" as a research project on parallel computing.

		Gaviota, a Chess Engine Communication Protocol and UCI compatible chess engine written by FM Miguel A. Ballicora in the C programming language. When It was released in 2001, it was the first Argentinian engine available. Gaviota supports its own endgame tablebases, book, and can use several processors (SMP). It has the ability to learn by remembering book lines and positions that were not good. Gaviota avoids them in following games. There are versions for Linux, Android, Windows, and Mac OS (0.86) ^[1]. The Gaviota team is completed by tester Adam Hair ^[2].

Etymology

Miguel A. Ballicora on the name of his program ^[8]:

Gaviota means "seagull", from the story of Jonathan Livingston Seagull. The spirit of the engine reflects the free spirit of the fictional bird, of flying for fun and excitement, not for food. In Spanish, the book was translated to Juan Salvador Gaviota. In addition, my wife's nickname is Gaby, so it has double meaning.

Gaviota played various ACCA Americas' Computer Chess Championships, CCT Tournaments and ACCA World Computer Rapid Chess Championships, further the IGWT 2013 and multiple TCEC seasons.

		IvanHoe, an UCI compliant open source chess engine of the Ippolit and RobboLito series of programs, first released in January 2010 and base of a lot of further derivatives. IvanHoe features a SMP search, Multi-PV, and Chess960 ^[1], and uses a decrementing versioning scheme. Authors are the pseudonymous Ippolit comrades, Yakov Petrovich Golyadkin ^[2], Igor Igorovich Igoronov, Roberto Pescatore, Yusuf Ralf Weisskopf, and Ivan Skavinsky Skavar ^[3]. Izak Pretorius alias PeterPan keeps computer chess aficionados and testers busy with IvanHoe "compiles" ^[4], and the release of the IvanHoe 46h derivative PanChess ^[5]. Franklin Titus alias kingliveson ^[6] provides source and executables as well ^[7].

		Lancaster, (Scott's program, Scott) an early chess program for the ICL 1909/5 mainframe computer developed in 1968 by the then 17 year-old John J. Scott, at that time beside Atlas by Alex Bell the only other chess program in England ^[1]. Scott's program used an effective iterative deepening approach ^[2] and even already internal iterative deepening. Lancaster played an exhibition match versus Greenblatt's Chess Program at the 1968 IFIP conference held in Edinburgh ^[3]. The game was analyzed by Jack Good, as published in Donald Michie's Machine Intelligence 4 ^[4]. Scott's program was further sparring partner of Atlas, the forerunner of Master.

Greenblatt's program was exhibited at the 1968 IFIPS held in Edinburgh. It was a major attraction, drawing large crowds who cheered the program on to a win against the majority of its opponents. A special match was arranged between the program and one written by John Scott for the ICL 1909/5. An analysis of this game was made by I. J. Good, with the comment that Scott's program had a chance to draw at the 58th move, but made a bad move and then resigned. Because it was generally agreed that Greenblatt's program was the best to that date, Scott's program had done well to last so long. Both these programs were powerful opening and middle game players but became, from recorded games, relatively weak should they reach an end game. It seemed to the author that if it were possible to play a vigorous swapping strategy in order to reach an end game quickly then, even with a queen advantage, neither program would be actually able to realise the mate.

The Game

The first four moves on each side were played before the machines took over the play, because Lancaster could not castle. The move time limits originally agreed were 90 seconds for Lancaster and 'blitz speed' (5 or 10 seconds per move) for the Greenblatt program, as it was considered that the PDP-10 is about 10 times faster than the ICL 1909/5. After a few moves the PDP-10 team increased its move time limit to about 25 seconds per move, while Lancaster remained at 90 ^[7].

		List, a chess engine written by Fritz Reul in C. The development started in 2000, and List was first released as WinBoard engine 4.60 in May 2002 ^[1], and as free native ChessBase engine 5.04 for the Fritz GUI in December 2002 ^[2] .

Description

List 4.6x is a 32-bit engine operating on 10x8 boards. It uses a recursive fail-soft alpha-beta search with transposition table and quiescence search inside an iterative deepening frame with aspiration, and performs fractional extensions, depth dependent razoring and null move search with fail-high reductions, and IDD ^[4] . Dann Corbit, who had seen some bit of List's C source code in 2002, on the origin of List's name ^[5] :

The program uses many piece-lists internally, which is where the name comes from, I think. I have seen the evaluation function, which uses separate lists for each piece type.

WCCC 2003

List participated at the WCCC 2003 in Graz, not represented by its author himself, but by Erdogan Günes. Fritz Reul, being circumvented with examination commitments, did not act appropriate to prove his program was not a clone, as accused due to an official protest during the tournament. As a consequence, List was disqualified after eight of eleven rounds ^[6] ^[7]. In 2005, Fritz Reul was rehabilitated by the ICGA, after List's source code was inspected by an expert approved by the ICGA ^[8], who stated List was definitely not a clone of any other program, and that it contains some new ideas in chess programming ^[9] ^[10].

List 5.12

In January 2004, List 5.12 was released as free UCI engine along with Aristarch by Stefan Zipproth ^[11]. Able to play Chess960, List further played the Chess960CWC 2005.

Loop List

In October 2005, Fritz Reul's new 32-bit engine dubbed Loop List was released commercially as UCI engine ^[12] . List and Loop List further evolved to the 32-bit Loop engine as described in chapter 2 Non-Bitboard Architectures of Fritz Reul's Ph.D. thesis New Architectures in Computer Chess ^[13].

Lozza,
a JavaScript open source chess engine and user interface by Colin Jenkins, first introduced in March 2014. To play a game of chess or to analyze a position via FEN online, Lozza requires a modern web browser since it is instantiated as web worker. As UCI engine, Lozza can be used in Windows GUIs like WinBoard or Arena via Edmund Moshammer's jsUCI tool starting with jsuci.exe lozza.js ^[1] ^[2]. Other JavaScript based UCI engines, also source-to-source compiled to JavaScript, are able to run under Lozza's web based user interface ^[3], for instance the Emscripten port of Stockfish 5, Stockfish-js ^[4].

Description

Lozza represents the board using a 12x12 mailbox array and two lists of white and black pieces. The principal variation search inside the classical iterative deepening framework features a transposition table indexed by Zobrist keys and state of the art selectivity, amongst others null move pruning, late move reductions, and IID. It has implemented the simplified evaluation function by Tomasz Michniewski ^[5] ^[6].

		Mephisto Montreux, a dedicated chess computer with an ARM6 32Bit RISC Processor running at 14 MHz, produced and market by Hegener & Glaser, already acquired by Saitek in 1994 just short before the Montreux was released in 1995, with a program by Johan de Koning derived from The King, also related to the Saitek RISC 2500 and Tasc R30 ^[1]. Mephisto Montreux was the last and lonesome dedicated computer competing a World Microcomputer Chess Championship, the WMCCC 1995 in Paderborn with respectable 5/11 versus programs running on PCs and SPARC workstations, and much higher clock rates from 60 to 120 MHz ^[2].

It has a 0x88 board, and applies alpha-beta with transposition table and null move pruning inside an iterative deepening framework with aspiration windows. Checks, pawn moves to the 7th rank, and mate threatening moves are extended, killer- and history heuristic help to order moves. Evaluation counts material aware of the bishop pair and trade bonuses for pieces if ahead and pawns if behind, and positionally considers pawn structure utilizing a pawn hash table, passed pawns, mobility, rook on open file, bad bishop, and pawn shield for king safety to name the most important terms. PolarChess played the CCT4 and CCT5 tournaments.

		Rival, (Rival Chess, NewRival) a chess engine written by Chris Moreton and Russell Newman in C++, starting in 1992 as MS-DOS program with an own GUI, before being rewritten for Windows as WinBoard compatible engine (NewRival) a couple of years later ^[1]. The UCI protocol was implemented in 2006 as Rival UCI 1.18 for Windows, while the current Rival engine was ported to Java as used in the Android application. DOS and Windows versions are available as source code ^[2]. Further, Rival is able to play various chess variants like Kinglet, Losing Chess, and Shatranj ^[3].

Description

Rival is described in detail on the redhotpawn sites ^[5]. Rival for Java uses bitboards with big-endian rank-file mapping. It determines sliding piece attacks with magic bitboards ^[6].

Search

Rival applies PVS negamax alpha-beta with transposition table, killer heuristic and quiescence inside an iterative deepening framework.

Evaluation

The evaluation function calculates scores of both sides, and returns the score difference of the side to move minus the side not on the move in negamax manner, considering pawn structure, various piece terms, and king safety. A quote from Rival's Static Board Evaluation site ^[7]:

The factors considered in the evaluation function have been chosen because they are relatively quick to calculate. Very few of the ideas are entirely original; many represent elementary chess knowledge and many have been used in other chess programs. Sources that have been of particular influence are Slate & Atkin (1977) ^[8], Newborn (1975) ^[9] and Hyatt et al (1985) ^[10] . Some of the factors have been added to overcome certain weaknesses that the program has shown, others have been left out in the hope that the gain in search speed would outweigh the loss in evaluation quality. The work of Berliner et al (1990) ^[11] suggests the opposite to the last assumption.

Siberian Chess,
a shareware chess program by Eugene Nalimov running under DOS. Siberian Chess was developed in the 80's and early 90s, and was mainly written in C with time-critical parts in 8080 and later 8086 assembly ^[1]. It was distributed by Gambit-Soft around 1994.

		Sunfish, a simple open source chess engine under the GPL written by Thomas Dybdahl Ahle in Python for didactic purposes, inspired by Harm Geert Muller's Micro-Max ^[1] . Without the code lines of the piece-square tables and its simple command line interface, it takes up just 111 lines of code.

Description

Sunfish applies MTD-bi, the binary search version of MTD(f) ^[3] , also known as NegaC* as proposed by Jean-Christophe Weill in 1990 ^[4] ^[5] , which is based on C*, introduced by Kevin Coplan in 1981 at Advances in Computer Chess 3 ^[6] . MTD-bi is embedded inside an iterative deepening framework. Its fail-soft scout originally lacked the quiescence search, which made it blunder pretty badly in some positions ^[7] , but a version of this was later added ^[8]. The rudimentary evaluation considers point values and piece-square tables - an aggregated score is incremental updated during make move.

Etymology

Sunfish is named after the Pygmy Sunfish, which is amoung the very few fish to start with the letters 'Py', and refers other famous fish engines such as Stockfish and Rybka ^[9] .

		Terra, a Chess Engine Communication Protocol and UCI compatible chess engine by Peter Fendrich written in C and later versions in C++. Terra already started its life in 1980 for a TI-99 ^[1], and later x86 processor to run under Windows 3.1 with an own GUI under the initial name Nimzo, but that name was later "stolen" by a commercial program and in 1998 Nimzo was renamed to Terra ^[2]. It applies bitboards both in generation of moves and in evaluation. In June 1998, rotated bitboards were implemented which gave a huge speedup in generating sliding piece attacks. Terra performs PVS with adaptive null move pruning, move ordering is enhanced by the Killer heuristic with two killers per ply level, and history heuristic, while quiescence search is restricted by SEE. Further, Terra features Book learning and is able to access Nalimov Tablebases ^[3] . The program's name Terra, "The Earth", was inspired by Douglas Adams' novel Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy ^[4]. In 2004 the development of Terra was stopped in favor of Peter's new engine Alaric ^[5] .Terra played the CCT2, CCT3 and CCT5.
