		Adam, a chess engine by Dominique Longbien, written in C++, and first released in June 2002 as WinBoard engine ^[1]. Adam 3.3, released in March 2011, is compatible with UCI only. Adam was active over the board from 2002 until 2006 in participating several French Computer Chess Championship and French Programmers Tournaments. At the FCCC 2003, running in a Pentiom 3, 1.3 GHz, Adam searched about 250 KNPS ^[2].

		Alaric, (TerraPi) a WinBoard and UCI compliant chess engine written by Peter Fendrich in C++. It uses both bitboards and other structures to represent the board and to generate moves, and further utilizes transposition table, pawn hash table, history tables, and two killer slots per ply. Inside its principal variation search with null move pruning, a precise prediction of node types takes place in order to guide the search ^[1].

Etymology

The chess engine Alaric is named after Alaric I (around 370 – 410 AD), King of the Visigoths from 395, who managed to walk with his forces right through the Roman empire, invaded Italy and sacked Rome in 410. Before that in the year 394 he served as a leader of Germanic troops under Roman command of Theodosius I but wasn't happy with how the Goths were treated ^[3].

Tournament Play

Alaric played the CCT9 with a result of 3½/7, and, under the handle TerraPi, a successful WCRCC 2007, becoming 6th with 8½/14 ^[4]. One year later, at the WCRCC 2008, Alaric even became 4th with 9½/14 ^[5]. Alaric's opening book was cooked by Günther Simon ^[6].

Alexs,
a chess program by Alex van Tiggelen, apparently an application of ALEXS (Automatically Learning EXpert System), a neural network approach with a learning efficiency beyond of genetic learning, as elaborated and demonstrated by Van Tiggelen and Van den Herik at Advances in Computer Chess 6 in the domain of specific endgames, in particular the endgame of two knights versus h-pawn ^[1], and by Van Tiggelen casted to the middlegame ^[2].

Alexs played the DOCCC 1996 and the DOCCC 1998, according to Vincent Diepeveen ^[3] ^[4] it was based on the Dutch Nightmare by Joost Buijs, with an automatically tuned evaluation in 1996, but manually tuned parameters in 1998. A time-served version of Alexs was commercially available through Gambit-Soft from 1999 ^[5].

		Alice, an experimental open source chess engine under the GNU General Public License written by Sven Reichard in C++, compliant with the Chess Engine Communication Protocol. Alice is an object oriented program developed under GCC and Linux. The board is a vector of 64 pointers to pieces, while piece is an abstract class, with intermediate subclasses for common piece properties such as sliding versus none sliding pieces, and finally instantiable subclasses for the concrete pieces, like Pawn, Rook, etc., and "null pieces" for the empty squares ^[1]. Jim Ablett provides recent compiles for 32/64-bit Windows and Linux ^[2].

Alice is an object oriented Bitboard engine, applying Rotated Bitboards to determine sliding piece attacks. Size of of the encapsulated Bitboard class is 8 by unsigned long long number ^[4].

		Amy, a Chess Engine Communication Protocol aka XBoard compliant open source chess program under the GNU General Public License by Thorsten Greiner, written in C. Its development already started in 1993 on the Amiga ^[1], and continued on UNIX platforms, in particular FreeBSD ^[2]. Amy 0,6 was ported to Windows for Winboard by Dann Corbit in early 2000 ^[3]. Amy applies ABDADA ^[4] inside a NegaScout framework ^[5] as parallel search algorithm, further using fractional ply extensions aka the SEX Algorithm , Null Move Pruning, and Extended Futility Pruning . Amy played the WMCCC 1995 in Paderborn and various International Paderborn Computer Chess Championships.

		Anatoli, a WinBoard compliant chess engine by Martin Giepmans, first released in April 2008 and freely available via Leo Dijksman's WBEC Ridderkerk site ^[1]. Like Martin's earlier engine SpiderChess, Anatoli is written in Delphi. Martin named it after Anatoly Karpov (Dutch transliteration Anatoli Karpov) ^[2] because he admired Karpov's subtle playing style and had the hope he might teach Anatoli to play a bit like Karpov, though ^[3] ^[4].

Anechka, (Анечка, Anya)
an UCI compliant chess engine by Sergei Nefedov, written in Delphi. The program was developed incrementally, starting with board representation, generation, make and unmake move, alpha-beta search, and rudimentary evaluation, published in 2003, further improving in subsequent versions. Version 0.05 disabled checks in quiescence search and had a slightly modified evaluation function, yielding in a significant increase in playing strength on short time controls ^[1]. Latest version is Anechka 0.08, released in July 2006 ^[2]. This version played the CCCCISC 2008 in Moscow with 3½/7, and the IOPCCC 2008 in Łódź.

		Arthur, a Chess Engine Communication Protocol compatible, portable chess engine written by Walter Ravenek in the 90s, with an own graphical user interface for the Apple Macintosh computer. Arthur played various Dutch Open Computer Chess Championships with strong results, for instance becoming third at the DOCCC 1998 behind The King and CilkChess. It further played multiple Aegon Tournaments in the 90s, the IPCCC 1994, the WMCCC 1997 in Paris and the WCCC 1999 in Paderborn.

1997

Arthur is an amateur chess program that has been developed as a literate program, i.e., with description and source code integrated in a single document. The complete print-out is some 500 pages. The program uses conventional search techniques, with some specific extensions developed by the author. The program is knowledge intensive and plays mainly positional games. Arthur has been a regular guest in the AEGON Man vs. Machine tournaments and the Open Dutch Computer Chess Championships. Over the last three years it has finished between the top amateur programs.

1999

Arthur is a strong Dutch amateur program. It has finished as the best amateur program in the Open Dutch Computer Chess Championships for the last three years, performing reasonably well against commercial programs. The program consists of a platform independent chess engine, which is connected to a graphical user interface for the Macintosh. A WinBoard version will be available in the near future. Arthur is quite capable tactically, but it tends to play a positional game, when given the chance.

		Bebe, (Be-Be) a chess program running on a customized, special purpose bit slice hardware developed by Tony and Linda Scherzer as testbed for their company's SYS-10, Inc. mini- and mainframe processors ^[1] . It was originally written on a Z80 basis, as BB-1 already standby at the ACM 1978 ^[2] ^[3], and was ported to run on a SYS-10 computer ^[4] , based on AMD 2900 bit slicers ^[5] . While the hardware did no longer improve significantly since the mid 80s, the software and opening book did. Bebe approached parallelism in generating attack and defend maps, move generation, move ordering, and evaluation, but otherwise had a serial search. Its implementation of Iterative deepening was quite unique. To avoid the odd-even effect, Bebe searched only odd depths with an increment of two plies at the root ^[6] . It further introduced a learning approach utilizing a persistent hash table, explained in award winning paper ^[7]. After Tony Scherzer's early death in January 1995 ^[8] , the work on Bebe discontinued, while SYS-10, Inc. continued, and is now a company providing custom software applications located in South Elgin, Illinois ^[9] , owned by Linda Scherzer since 1978 ^[10] .

Achievements

Bebe was one of the strongest chess entities in the 80s. At its first appearance, the WCCC 1980 in Linz, it finished best placed "Micro" ^[13] . Four draws in four rounds, playing programs like Chess 4.9 and Nuchess. The following three World Computer Chess Championships were even more successful. Bebe was first runner up at the WCCC 1983 in New York, tied for first place at the WCCC 1986 in Cologne, and finally was runner up again in Edmonton at the WCCC 1989. As mentioned by Robert Hyatt, Bebe "helped" Cray Blitz to win both the WCCC 1983 and the WCCC 1986 ^[14] .

Bebe further played 13 consecutive ACM North American Computer Chess Championships, including the already mentioned WCCC in New York, from 1980 until 1993, again runner up in 1981 (tied), 1984 and 1985.

Selective Deepening

At ACM 1986, after winning ChipTest, Merlin and Recom, Bebe lost to Belle, the eventual winner. In the battle for the second place, Bebe was defeated by Lachex. Both programs went in a sequence of forced moves where both sides had only one single good choice along the way. Neither program had any idea about who would come up ahead in the end, until suddenly after playing along the forced line, both programs realized that Bebe was lost. In a discussion with Feng-hsiung Hsu and others, Tony Scherzer made the statement that the old idea of selective pruning was dead, replaced by the new idea of selective extensions . According to Hsu, that was how the idea of Singular Extensions began ^[15] .

A relatively new program and machine, Bebe has recently acquired a provisional UCSF rating of 1810 based on play in one tournament. Bebe defeated an Expert in that tournament. Tony Scherzer's brainchild examines 10,000 nodes/sec or about 2,000,000 in a three minute move. The program is small, requiring only 10k 16 bit words. The program has no book. It uses iterative deepening and is written in assembly language.

In early 1980 SYS-10 tried new hardware techniques needed for their mini/mainframe processor in co-processors for BeBe's CPU. Each co-processor takes over a specific function from the main CPU.

The first co-processor does the complete task of move list generation. The actual unit is divided into two processors which function in parallel: one that finds pieces and one that calculate and stores moves. This parallelism provides results more than 25 times faster than software.

A second co-processor performs the position scoring function. The scorer "looks at" the output of the move generator and uses the moves to calculate values for piece position mobility and co-operation. The scorer functions in parallel with the move generator.

BeBe operates at four distinct levels:

Software does I/O, timekeeping, book lookup, search depth control, and overall system control.
Special CPU instructions do move list sorting, internal board update for making and unmaking moves, the alpha-beta minimax control, keeping track of killer moves, building bit maps of piece locations, and some board scoring functions.
The co-processors perform move list generation, and some of the board scoring functions.
The self-activated parallel processor determines of either king is in check and determines the attack-defender count for any square. Because it self starts, the answers for both kings are ready before the software can ask the question.

Mephisto Best-Publication Award

The fourth Mephisto Best-Publication Award for publications between April 01, 1990 and March 31, 1991 is awarded to Tony and Linda Scherzer and Dean Tjaden for their article Learning in Bebe published in Computers, Chess, and Cognition ^[22], explaining the implementation of a persistent hash table inside BeBe. The jury consisted of Jaap van den Herik, David Levy, Tony Marsland, Jonathan Schaeffer and Ken Thompson. Bernie,
a chess program by Christopher Lutz written in Turbo C and 68000 Assembly on an Atari ST. Bernie participated at the First IPCCC 1991 in Paderborn running on a 1040STE with 1,000 nodes per second, and became shared third with 3/5, tied with Check Check behind Zugzwang on 256 transputers and Bobby II ^[1]. Recognizing the amount of work to furher improve his program, Christopher Lutz then decided to better invest his time in his own chess playing career ^[2].

		Betsy, a WinBoard compatible chess engine written by Landon W. Rabern in C with a little Assembly, first released in September 2000 ^[1]. Originally written in Pascal with its own text interface it was rewritten in C using rotated bitboards. Betsy applies PVS with null move pruning, and various standard and some aggressive non-standard extensions and reductions. According to the Arena site, Betsy was the first published chess engine able to play Chess960, and is therefor Arena partner engine ^[2].

		Bodo, an UCI compliant chess engine written by Joel Veness initially in C and with a rewrite of version 0.5 in 2005 in C++. Bodo is a bitboard program ^[1], its search relies on PVS based alpha-beta with null move heuristic ^[2], iterative deepening, IID, killer- and history heuristic, and exploits its transposition table with enhanced transposition cutoffs. The quiescence search uses SEE for pruning. The evaluation function has emphasis on attacking the king and keeping the pieces active. Evaluation 'personalities' are configurable without recompile ^[3].

Bootstrapping

A modified version of the tournament chess engine Bodo, Meep, was used to implement learning algorithms - the hand-crafted evaluation function of Bodo was removed and replaced by a weighted linear combination of 1812 features. Given a position s, a feature vector Φ(s) can be constructed from the 1812 numeric values of each feature. The majority of these features are binary. Φ(s) is typically sparse, with approximately 100 features active in any given position. Five wellknown, chess specific feature construction concepts: material, piece square tables, pawn structure, mobility and king safety were used to generate the 1812 distinct features. These features were a strict subset of the features used in Bodo, which are themselves simplistic compared to a typical tournament engine ^[6].

Bodo competed in a number of online computer chess tournaments, the NC3 2003, NC3 2004, NC3 2005 and NC3 2006 Australasian National Computer Chess Championships, where it won in 2005 (Version 0.5), and the CCT6, CCT8, and CCT9 tournaments.

		Boris, an early dedicated chess computer, which appeared in February 1978, designed and manufactured by Applied Concepts ^[1] and marketed by primary distributor Chafitz. Already in March 1978, Boris played Second West Coast Computer Faire Microcomputer Chess Tournament in the "microcomputers with less than 8K of memory class" ^[2]. The name was likely in dependence on the given name of Boris Spassky, who lost the Chess World Championship 1972 from Bobby Fischer in Reykjavik. Boris ran on a Fairchild F8 8-bit microprocessor with only 2.5 KiB ROM and 256 byte RAM. David Lindsay was hired to program the machine ^[3], and two further Boris models with Lindsay programs appeared in 1979, the first travel chess computer Boris Diplomat ^[4] ^[5], where Lindsay holds a patent ^[6] on the Chess piece font ^[7], and the Boris Master ^[8].

Just to rewind a bit, one evening when I was home having dinner, I got a call from Bobby Fischer. He was excited about our electronic chess game "Boris" and I realized that if he was interested in our electronic chess game that there was a major market out there. We increased our development of electronic games and yes, we hired the brightest and the best programmers in the country to develop programs for our games.

Co-Author

The ICGA site mentions Rex Kent as author of Boris Experimental which played the 1st World Microcomputer Chess Championship 1980 in London ^[13]. However, Boris X was already the work of Kathe and Dan Spracklen, and additionally with modifications by John Aker and Terry Fredrick. Rex Kent operated Boris at the PCW-MCC 1978 ^[14]. It is a bit unclear whether Kent was operator or co- or book-author of the early Boris otherwise credited to David Lindsay.

Boris 2.5

In 1979, following the development of the original Boris when more advanced programs were required, Arleen and Steve Chafitz contracted Kathe and Dan Spracklen to be their chess programmers for their Chafitz modular game system as well the Applied Concepts Great Game Machine ^[15]. Their Sargon 2.5 program appeared as Chafitz Sargon 2.5 MGS module ^[16], and in 1980, as Chafitz ARB Sargon 2.5 ^[17], also called Boris Sargon 2.5 ^[18] or simply dubbed Boris 2.5. John Aker and Terry Fredrick, affiliated with Applied Concepts, were involved in improving the Sargon and Boris program ^[19].

Boris Handroid

		Boris Handroid was the first but very rare electronic chess robot from 1980 ^[20], with 64 Hall effect sensors to recognize pieces, and three servomechanisms to control the cartesian robotic arm. The Handroid program, adapted by Terry Fredrick ^[21] was also based on Sargon 2.5 by Kathe and Dan Spracklen.

Boris Experimental

Boris Experimental (Boris X) was the further development of the Boris 2.5 aka Sargon 2.5 program, but no longer by the Spracklens, who after their experience no longer worked for Chafitz, but for Samole's Fidelity Electronics. John Aker continued the job.

WMCCC 1980

The Sargon based Boris Experimental played the 1st World Microcomputer Chess Championship, September 4-9, 1980, in London, where it only lost versus later champion and Sargon based Challenger X, blundering an endgame a piece up ^[23], and became second with 4 out of 5!

Controversy

ACM 1980

Boris X was also registered for the ACM 1980. A brief description is given in the tournament booklet with Applied Concepts CEO Alan Mead as representative ^[24] :

The program uses alpha-beta pruning with recently developed and improved search heuristics. The program runs in 8k of program space and has nine levels of play including two tournament levels. The tournament level play is expected to be 100 points stronger than the present BORIS 2.5 program.

But Boris X, despite registered, finally did not play the ACM 1980. Kathe Spracklen had filed a protest, claiming Boris X is too similar to Sargon 2.5, and requested mutual comparison of the source code. After John Aker admitted that Boris X was a revamped Sargon 2.5, Boris was rejected ^[25] ^[26].

ACM 1981

At the 12th ACM 1981, Boris X was mentioned in the booklet again, now with a long list of its authors and Applied Concepts representatives ^[27], but again, did not participate, likely also because David Slate was already competing with Nuchess:

		Caesar, an early microcomputer chess program written by John Lowe, apparently in Z80 assembly. Caesar played the 2nd European Microcomputer Chess Championship in 1981, and the 4th European Microcomputer Chess Championship 1983 in London, running on a TRS-80 ^[1].

Horizon Effect

		During the last round game at the EMCC 1983, Chess 2001 vs. Caesar, to the delight of its operator David Levy, Chess 2001 played 32.Kh2 leaving Caesar in Zugzwang with a drastic demonstration of the horizon effect. 		Cassandre, an Chess Engine Communication Protocol and UCI compliant open source chess engine under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL), written in C++ by Raphael Grundrich, Thomas Adolph and Jean-Francois Romang, first released in March 2003. Cassandre started as a student project at Louis Pasteur University, Strasbourg ^[1]. It is based on bitboards, in particular Rotated bitboards with 256 occupancy states to determine sliding piece attacks, bitscan aka first- and last one by conditional 16-bit lookups, and population count by eight byte lookups credited to Dann Corbit, and uses the alpha-beta algorithm ^[2].

Charlie,
a chess program, written in the early 70s by high school student Andreas Keil, becoming third winner of the German Jugend forscht youth science competition 1974, in the category of computer science and mathematics ^[1]. Charlie was written in over 6000 lines of assembly language and LIDIA, a language for computer-aided teaching. Charlie played the First GI Computer Chess Tournament ^[2], where it ran on a Siemens 4004 ^[3].

		Charly, ("Chess heuristics and algorithms for relaxing lazy yodelers") an early chess program developed in 1967/68 by Gerald Tripard, Gerhard Rudolf and Werner Joho at ETH Zurich, to run on a CDC 1604.

Description

The main tree search went 4 plies deep, with the final position including an extensive evaluation of all possible exchanges on the square occupied by the piece being moved there on the last ply. This made the program relatively strong tactically but there was not much in the program incorporating strategy. Strategy, besides material advantage, included mobility of the pieces, pawn structure and advancement to queening. It required a considerable amount of time making the program totally move-legal, such as incorporating all of the rules associated with castling, en passant, and stalemate through move repetition. The only thing not included was pawn promotion to something other than a queen. The opening book was programmed by Gerhard Rudolf, the machine language expert, the chess playing algorithm was programmed in Fortran. The library entries were collected from books, mainly, the 10th edition of Larry Evans, Modern Chess Openings ^[2].

ETH-MIT Match

In 1968, Gerald Tripard asked Richard Greenblatt for a match versus Mac Hack VI. Three games were played in October and November 1968 via ham radio ^[3]:

Chesley,
an open source chess engine by Matt Gingell under the GNU Public License, written in C++ and supporting both Windows and POSIX. Chesley is compatible with the Chess Engine Communication Protocol. It takes its name from Chesley B. “Sully” Sullenberger, the pilot who successfully landed a airplane on the Hudson river around the time Matt was getting started ^[1]. Chessley is a bitboard program, and applies rotated bitboards not using the outer square optimization for a fourfold table reduction ^[2]. Matt made experiments with the Score data type in Chesley, and replaced 32-bit integer by Float, taking the same space ^[3].
