APwin,
a Windows graphical user interface by Paul Wiereyn which supports the free chess problem solving engines Alybadix and Popeye. While earlier DOS versions were bundled with the former commercial Alybadix v. 2010 and earlier versions ^[1], APwin v2015 is freeware.

		Aquarium, a sophisticated, commercial Windows GUI by ChessOK, supporting UCI and WinBoard engines, developed by Victor Zakharov and Vladimir Makhnychev ^[1]. Aquarium is based on the fluent design as introduced by Microsoft Office 2007, featuring a ribbon ^[2], which is a set of toolbars placed on tabs ^[3] ^[4]. Beside the ribbon, the main window is tiled by a navigation window with multiple panes to switch modes and documents, and a bigger working area with various views on that documents, that is game databases, generated game lists and move variation trees as result of database queries, and a single chess game, optional with variation trees and notations. In game playing or analyzing mode, the working area is dominated by a board view associated with dockable and stackable notation-, multiple column tree-, header-, analysis- and information windows. First released as aquarium for the fish dubbed Rybka, the Aquarium GUI is also bundled with Houdini ^[5].

Database

Aquarium has its own proprietary database format, and further supports the format of its stable mate Chess Assistant, Portable Game Notation and Extended Position Description. It can read, query and import ChessBase CBH-Format.

		Arena, a free Graphical User Interface for Chess Engine Communication Protocol and UCI compatible engines running under Windows, and since November 2016 Linux ^[1], developed by Martin Blume ^[2]. The development started in 2001/2002 motivated and initiated by WinBoard aficionado Frank Quisinsky. The Arena team, soon maintaining their own website and support forum, was advanced by Christopher Conkie, Michael Diosi and a lot of other people for Language translation and Opening Book support, for instance Harry Schnapp, Đorđe Vidanović, Carlos Pesce and Dann Corbit to name a few mentioned on the Arena site ^[3] . They initially set up an Arena Security Area for registered download of the GUI and the bundled Arena partner engines. In 2004 there was an attempt by Frank Quisinsky within the Gladiator-Shop to commercialize Arena bundled with engines such as Ruffian ^[4], Patriot ^[5] and Ktulu ^[6] . The Gladiator project was abandoned after suspicions that the new Patriot 2.0 was based on Fruit ^[7] became substantial in May 2005 ^[8]. Arena 3.5.1 is the recent version, available from the Arena download site ^[9] .

Team Issues

By August 2005, presumably after issues to commercialize Arena, Quisinsky left the team ^[11] . In retrospect he explains his reasoning in the German CSS Forum, January 30, 2010 ^[12] :

There were several reasons why I've pulled out of the project.

1st With their arena and proceed to the spread of computer chess, there were different perspectives on Martin and myself. For example, I had built up just before the break a lot of contacts with Asian firms. Stupid was that some truth in both views was. So I realized that not enough time to implement, for example, my future goals. The team was too small. My own goals fell into a tailspin. But I want to write anything. Probably it would have been so but now that we have had in about 3-5 million downloads, computer chess world would have had a higher level of awareness.

2nd Added to this was that I no longer even afford the time could. His time a new job, etc.. Also stole a lot of time useless. The forum was argued only the administration and robbed continually important time. Martin also saw the way other members was unfortunately not in the team for the Forum sacred. But in a small team must be set Prios.

3rd What turned me off that everyone helped himself without asking. His term discussions in chess talk. Even the administrators of chess talk did not intervene. Arena was or is indeed freeware, but for future releases should be asked. We wanted to know who uses the Arena and whether our interests are safeguarded so. I had no interest in that the good reputation of the very hard work had gone before, is not ruined by the people involved. So it was that time in the copyrights that require approval of a further publication. Freeware is not necessarily just because a program is freely available.

4th I really dislike it, the arena team that captured people like Christopher Conkie, Arena used to fighten against other programs. It was not in my interest in using other software developers arena to point out any errors. Arena has to focus on the development itself and not on other programs. Sun came slowly but surely also a shame to the reputation of the project in danger for me and my name was on a long term. Unsubscribe private wars under the flag arena ... I absolutely refused. Under these circumstances, I did my time no longer provide. Thus, on my website texts that I had added, deleted, even by Christopher Conkie. That went too far for me.

As Martin, with whom I was coping very well, not relenting was ... I thought, well now Martin will be happy with Christopher Conkie. If you support these activities around arena, but not together with me please.

Eventually, Martin was certainly very disappointed but we were not together anymore ... probably noticed ... without which we would now argue, etc.. We also have no contact. 3x've tried to contact him but he responds to recover any of my e-mails.

And the Arena GUI itself:
For me, this program is in the midst of development. The many ideas are still far from complete. I look at arena with different eyes than perhaps a user who is satisfied with the features comes up with the current arena. Insofar as I can with the program on time, in this state, not make friends more and avoid arena ... only see a construction site when I would start arena. Also due to the fact that I have sooo much time invested. Thus ends at some point once a team work, which has raised such a popular project.

Illegal Hosting

Despite free software, the Arena team demands downloads from their own site and combats illegal hosting ^[13] of the GUI, the engines as well as their Web content. That also refers to interviews with programmers, which were copied even without citing the original source. Over the years they suffered not only from illegal hosting but during the time also from attacking their site. Their former ExactaChess site is closed now, the new site appeared in January 2011. However, it is not appropriate for the current Arena support team around Michael Diosi to attract attention by offensive public statements against their commercial and free software competitors ^[14] ^[15] ^[16] , to defame people from Eastern European countries for not citing the source ^[17], and to react on the other side oversensitive after Harm Geert Muller used the phrase To each his own ^[18] concerning the number of hits of the Arena site, as mentioned by Diosi ^[19] .

Bookbuilder,
a commercial chess program for analyzing chess opening positions and to build engine opening books. The program runs under Windows and comes with an own GUI and Crafty as default analyzing engine, has its own proprietary database format, and can import and export Portable Game Notation. Bookbuilder was initially developed by Bas Hamstra and subsequently by Michel Langeveld ^[1], and Deak Ferenc, supported by Anca Schlupek for board and piece graphics. Ideas, testing, and evaluation are credited to Didzis Cirulis, Jan Kaan and Tony Werten. Bookbuilder is copyright by KEC, a small software company based in The Netherlands ^[2].

Chess Academy,
was a commercial multiple purpose chess GUI developed by Witali Braslawski, published by Chess Academy Software and Book Publishing House, located in Düsseldorf, Germany, as of 2013 out of production ^[1]. Chess Academy ran under Windows, focusing on interactive chess tutorials, chess databases, and chess playing programs. Developed by Braslawski since 1991, Chess Academy has its own database format and comes with a huge database featuring opening trees and middle game positions, supporting PGN, EPD, CBF, HTML, RTF, and is able to query Nalimov endgame tablebases.

Beside its native engines (Chess Academy Engine, LGoliath), CA is compatible with UCI and the Chess Engine Communication Protocol aka Winboard, and is available in eight languages, English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Polish, and Russian. The Chess Academy GUI features a multiple document like interface with game list-, tutorial- and game windows, either with 2D- or 3D Graphics Board and various piece sets.

		Chess Assistant, a chess GUI and database developed by a team around Victor Zakharov since 1988 ^[1], commercially distributed via ChessOK, a brand name of Convekta Ltd., early versions running under MS-DOS, subsequent versions under Windows. The sophisticated GUI allows to search and edit games in a database, to edit games for web publishing, and is also front end for playing chess online. Chess Assistant 17 is bundled with Houdini 5 and one year online access to Lomonosov Tablebases ^[2].

Database

The CA database is an organized collection of up to millions of chess games, either in form of (compressed) PGN as interchange format, or as proprietary CA-format, managing classifiers, tree-structures and datasets for data mining and faster CQL access.

		Chess for Android, written by Aart Bik, is a standalone chess application for Android. The application is available for free at the Android Market ^[1] or as direct download ^[2] and consists of a chess engine (a Java version derived from the UCI engine BikJump that is written in C++) and a GUI. The application accepts moves through the touchscreen, the trackball, or through the keyboard (e2e4 pushes the king pawn, e1g1 castles king side, etc.). An optional "move coach" highlights valid user moves during input and last played engine move. Full game navigation buttons enable users to correct mistakes or analyze games. Games import and export as FEN/PGN to and from the clipboard, load and save as file, are set up through a position editor, or import as application/x-chess-pgn MIME type on startup. A draw by stalemate, insufficient material, the fifty move rule, or threefold repetition is recognized. The engine plays at various levels (including random, against itself in auto-play, or free-play, where the game can be used as a "magnetic chessboard"). The user can play either side and, independently, view the board from the perspective of white or black. The application also supports the Universal Chess Interface (UCI) and Chess Engine Communication Protocol (often simply called WinBoard or XBoard protocol), which allows users to play against more powerful third party engines or even play tournaments between engines. Engine setup features pondering, infinite analysis, hash tables, multiple threads, endgame tablebases (Nalimov , Gaviota, Scorpio, Robbobases), and opening test suites. Chess for Android recognizes all ChessBase compatible engines that are installed on the same device. Since version 5.6 released in February 2018 ^[3], Chess for Android supports the electronic chess board of the Millennium ChessGenius ^[4].

Chess for Glass, written by Aart Bik, is Glassware ^[1] ^[2] that runs directly on a Google Glass device. The user can enter moves by simply saying the moves (voice input feature), or by using the touchpad. Other features include a choice in board color, spoken move announcements, and the ability to import any third party chess engine to replace the friendly built-in Java engine. Chess for Glass recognizes all ChessBase compatible engines that are installed on the same Glass device, and supports both the popular UCI and XBoard/WinBoard protocols.

Garcés ^[1], developed and purchased by ChessOK, the brand name of Convekta Ltd - first released in December 2011 bundled with Houdini 2 ^[2]. Chess King is purchased as Gold, Silver and Standard edition differing in database volume and timeliness, engine version and price, and includes multilingual executables running under various Windows and OSX versions for PC and MAC ^[3]. Chess King is not intended to use other engines - as of 2013, advanced users may try to change the default engine, either compliant to UCI or the Chess Engine Communication Protocol, by editing some file ^[4].

Chess Wizard,
a free UCI compliant chess software under the GNU General Public License developed by Huang Chen in C++ and Visual Basic and distributed by Shanghai Xianqu Info-Tech Co., Ltd., to play, study, edit and publish games, derived from the Chinese Chess (xiangqi) software XiangQi Wizard ^[1]. Chess Wizard uses Stockfish as its default engine, supported by a huge online database ^[2]. The GUI is either Web-based, or native Win32 based.

		ChessBase, a chess database front and back end developed by Matthias Wüllenweber for the Atari ST which led to the foundation of the ChessBase company in 1986 ^[1] along with Frederic Friedel - the product name eponym of the company. ChessBase 1.0 was first released in January 1987 for the Atari ST running under GEM. Mathias Feist joined ChessBase in the late 80s, and was responsible to port the database and interface from Atari ST into the x86 DOS/Windows world, and further integrated first chess engines into the ChessBase interface, turning this into Fritz in 1991. Subsequent ChessBase versions evolved to a sophisticated multiple purpose GUI for database management, database queries and mining, interactive multimedia and video tutorials, analyzing or playing games and automatic engine tournaments with various native, UCI or WinBoard compliant engines on a single computer, inside a network or cloud, online play via the Playchess chess server, and Web- and desktop publishing of chess related documents.

GUI

The ChessBase 12 GUI is based on the fluent design as introduced by Microsoft Office 2007, featuring a ribbon ^[3], which is a set of toolbars placed on tabs. Beside the ribbon, the main window features various workspace layouts, either tiled by a navigation folder window, a database list view and database game-list and preview window, or game-lists for query results and game windows with board- and tabbed windows for game notation, annotations, references, score sheet, opening book tree, etc., to play, replay or analyze a game.

Database

A chess database is an organized collection of hundreds, thousands, or nowadays even millions of chess games. The proprietary ChessBase format manages those games with indices and classifiers for data mining and fast access. Queries for games can consider a variety of items, such as player names, date of games, ECO code, thematic keys and fragments of positions. PGN is supported as interchange format.

Formats

The ChessBase 3 database format (CBF) used two kind of files, data (*.cbf) and indices (*.cbi). The move encoding was based on a deterministic move generator, storing the generation number of a move. Along with ChessBase 6 in 1996, a new format was established, dubbed CBH, which was able to handle nested variations with annotations, multimedia files, and more sophisticated indices. One CBH database consists of more than ten files with various extensions ^[4], which can be archived inside a single file (*.cbv) format ^[5]. Apparently, the CBH file format was reverse engineered for interoperability purposes like import into other databases ^[6].

		ChessDB, a chess database and GUI based on Shane Hudson's final version 3.6.1 of Shane's Chess Information Database (SCID) from March 02, 2004 ^[1] with its file triples of indices, names and games. More than 90% of the code in ChessDB is taken from SCID. David Kirkby started the ChessDB project on SourceForge on December 13, 2006 ^[2] , with others soon contributing. Beside the addition of UCI engine support, statistical analysis of chess moves and PGN download from different sources are the most notable changes compared to SDIC 3.6 ^[3] . The following continuation of the SCID development by former ChessDB short time contributer Pascal Georges ^[4], caused some unpleasant quarrels ^[5] ^[6] .

ChessGUI,
a free Graphical User Interface for Chess Engine Communication Protocol and UCI compatible engines running under Windows, developed by Matthias Gemuh using the Visual Component Library of Borland's C++Builder 5.0, starting as GUI for his engines BigLion, Taktix, and ArcBishop. ChessGUI has a classical frame window with multiple hierarchical tabbed views on the current tournament or game document and engine outputs.

Features

Testing Framework

While Matthias claims "ChessGUI is not WinBoard, nor Arena, nor ..., but instead it is just an idea in a pre-beta stage of conception" ^[1], its sophisticated tournament modes along with its Sample Testsuite Tools ^[2] make ChessGUI a popular framework for engine testing and to produce rating lists.

Live Broadcast

ChessGUI is able to broadcast live games via the internet using TLCV by Thomas McBurney ^[3] ^[4], as successfully applied during the TCEC broadcasts by Martin Thoresen ^[5]. More recently, ChessGUI was incorporated in Ferdinand Mosca's aiBloodshed chess game broadcaster.

Support

ChessGUI supports various chess variants, opening books and endgame tablebases, the latter also for optional adjudication of the game result. Version 0.245f, released in December 2013, supports the six piece Syzygy Bases ^[6].

ChessPartner,
a fully developed, commercial Windows chess GUI market by Lokasoft, incorporating its native chess engine LChess and supporting any Winboard or UCI compatible chess engine via its internal adapter. ChessPartner evolved from the LChess GUI by Lex Loep and Ger Neef, ported to Windows 3.0 in 1991 ^[1].

Online Client

ChessPartner features as client for online play with various Chess Server to challenge and play against other human players or engines.

Databases

ChessPartner has its own proprietary database format and also supports Portable Game Notation. Its opening book manager handels up to eight books in parallel and supports book learning. Further, ChessPartner can query Nalimov endgame tablebases

GUI

The ChessPartner GUI consists of a frame window, with caption-, status-, and customizable menu- and toolbar, and a workspace with multiple views on the current game document, board window, optionally a 3D Board with 3D-piece bitmaps, notation-, score-history-, search- and book statistics, chess clock-, and chess server console windows.

		ChessX, a free open source chess database and GUI for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X under the GNU General Public License v2. Initially, ChessX has started as a continuation of SCID, but after some development, it was decided to break away from the Tcl/Tk code and start to program in C++ with Qt ^[1]. Initially developed by Michal Rudolf, current developers and maintainers include James Coons and Jens Nissen ^[2].

GUI

The ChessX GUI implements a tabbed document interface, the frame-window with caption, menu- and toolbars, and status bar at the bottom. A document window represents a game, and consists of a board window with configurable notation pane, game list of the current database, opening tree and ECO panes, up to two analyze panes, and a database list window.

Database

ChessX has an abstract Database C++ class, providing a common interface with methods for loading and saving of games, and for performing searches and queries. The concrete classes MemoryDatabase and PgnDatabase, derived from Database, implement the interface for PGN file based databases. Large PGN databases are indexed keeping persistent index files (.cxi) for faster re-opening and search.

DreamChess is an XBoard compatible OpenGL user interface with 2D and 3D graphics boards, packaged under the same license and suited to play versus Dreamer or other compatible engines like Crafty and GNU Chess ^[4].

		Galjoen, an open source chess program by Werner Taelemans, written in C++11 and distributed under the GNU General Public License, first released in February 2015 ^[1]. Galjoen comes with an own GUI build on gtkmm3, but can also ran as pure engine using the Chess Engine Communication Protocol or UCI. Galjoen 0.35, released in March 2017 is able to play Chess960 ^[2].

		glChess, ^[1] a free, Chess Engine Communication Protocol compliant open source chess GUI released under the GNU General Public License, to run under the GTK+ GNOME desktop environments on Linux and UNIX derivatives. The development of glChess started in 2000 by a team around Robert Ancell - early versions since 0.8 in 2005 were written in C ^[2], in 2006 completely rewritten in Python ^[3], optionally featuring a 3D Graphics Board using GtkGLExt ^[4] and OpenGL both including Python bindings. glChess became part of Gnome Games ^[5] and was forerunner of GNOME Chess, which was first released by Robert Ancell in November 2012 as split from Gnome Games, apparently ported from Python to Vala ^[6], keeping glChess as independent development branch ^[7].

GNOME Chess,
a free, Chess Engine Communication Protocol compliant open source chess GUI released under the GNU General Public License, to run under the GNOME desktop environment on Linux and UNIX derivatives, most often distributed with GNU Chess as default engine ^[1]. GNOME Chess is written in Vala and uses GTK+ and Cairo to render the chess board. GNOME Chess was first released in November 2012 by Robert Ancell as split from glChess then member of Gnome Games, apparently ported from Python to Vala ^[2], keeping glChess as independent development branch ^[3]. After Ancell's initial effort, Sahil Sareen and Michael Catanzaro have become primary GNOME Chess maintainers ^[4].

		Graphical User Interface (GUI), a user interface where interaction between user and a (chess) program takes place. Opposed to the sequential nature of a pure text based command-line interface, where a program prints its output and prompts for input, a graphical user interface allows a more sophisticated, graphical presentation of the programs output, as well within its event-driven architecture a more flexible user interaction not only by typing text commands, but using a pointingdevice, a mouse or a pen or finger pointing on and touching a graphics tablet with its touchscreen, for random and direct manipulation of graphical elements. A GUI dedicated to play chess typically has a graphical board and game representation, where the user may enter moves by clicking and dragging a piece, quite similar to moving a piece on a "real" chess board.

Playing Chess

The sequential nature of the game of chess, along with the both fundamental states of a chess engine while playing a game, that is calculating a move and pondering, should be appropriately indicated by the GUI, for instance to allow the interaction of entering moves only for the opponent side while pondering. There may be other modes than pure game playing, for instance to replay and analyze a game, allowing the user to click and drag the moves of the game notation move list, which needs appropriate indication and ergonomic control.

MVC

The chess program and its user interface can be interpreted as a Model–view–controller (MVC), an architectural pattern that isolates business logic f.i. game administration, time management and searching a move inside a chess program from input and presentation. The game model represents the domain-specific data on which the application operates - Inside a chess program, the information about the initial position and the game record to reproduce the current positions, likely subject of search or pondering during game play. The model and controller implement a finite-state machine which controls the game, its states, state transitions and actions considering various modes. The view displays the game notation, a list of moves, and likely the board with the current position, suitable for interaction inside a user interface. The controller receives input from various sources and devices, such as keyboard, mouse, serial port and internet socket, and initiates a response by making calls on model objects.

Today, most programmers rely on external event driven GUI applications using standard streams or pipelines to communicate with the GUI via protocols such as the Chess Engine Communication Protocol or the Universal Chess Interface. The external GUI application constitutes the MVC view and controller, and more or less even parts of a (redundant) game model (or even multi-game model), to make the GUI aware of its own game states to even make decisions on behalf of the engine, such as move selection from opening books and endgame tablebases, draw claims and offers and to finally declare the game over. These game interacting features of the external GUI application in conjunction with certain protocols such as UCI by far exceeds what a pure chess user interface was initially designed for - controller and view only, enter legal moves and render the state of the game. Sharing code of external GUIs, with potential game decisive move selection, time allocation and draw claiming, by multiple engines in official tournaments is a heavily discussed topic ^[5] .

Beside a pure user versus engine game playing interface, modern general purpose Chess GUIs implement features and modes for multiple engine tournament play, and can be used as front end for chess server and chess database back ends.

GUI Elements

A GUI consists of multiple elements or widgets, based on a visual rectangular area called window. Windows have recursive hierarchical relationships, that is a window may contain several child windows, which are usually restricted and clipped to the area of the parent window. The desktop metaphor as root, and all child and grand child windows of one or more applications can be interpreted as a tree structure, traversed in a depth-first manner if looking up graphical coordinates or visible areas, as already mentioned by Mikhail Donskoy at the Advances in Computer Games 9 conference in 1999 ^[9] .

A GUI application usually has one main- or frame-window, often sizable and movable, and child of the desktop. The main window further contains various standard child windows at its top and bottom areas, a caption bar, often configurable and dockable menu-, and/or toolbars, and status bar. The look and feel depends on the operating system and its window manager, there are quite common techniques and standardizations, also encouraged by cross platform widget toolkits.

Main Window

Beside its default child windows of the frame, the inner area also referred as workspace, may contain one or more so called document windows, to reduce clutter and make the desktop easier to navigate with multiple applications. A main window applies either a single (SDI), a multiple (MDI) or a tabbed document interface (TDI). Further modeless and often tabbed tool-, output log or miscellaneous windows for various purposes may share the workspace or may be docked on the borders or various areas of the mainframe, also called an IDE-style interface.

Dialog Windows

Another class of windows, dialog boxes apply modal transactions like saving a document to a file. They contain all kinds of child widgets to enter data, and most often buttons to confirm (OK) or cancel the transaction. There are further tabbed dialogs and multi-page wizard or assistants with next, previous and finish buttons to guide users through a sequence of transactions which are dependent on each other or partly optional.

A document or model usually refers to a game of chess and its game notation as move-list, whether still in progress or loaded from a database.

Game Window

A game window, associated with the game document or model, is usually a frame around a board- and notation window, which represent two views of the same model.

Board Window

A pure 2D board window should be isotropic and quadratic. If the board window has keyboard focus, one may control a square cursor to select two squares to make a move, similar to clicking with the mouse.

Notation Window

The notation window represents the game notation or score-sheet of the chess game, the list of moves of the game. It works like a multiple line text box or multiple column grid view or list box often scrollable and indicated by a vertical scrollbar. A cursor inside the notation window might be associated with a half-move index in the range from zero (before first half-move played, initial position), to N (after last half-move played, current game position), and determines the position displayed in the board window. If the game window has keyboard focus, it receives input of moves via move coordinates or algebraic notation.

Information Windows

Information windows are associated with an engine actually playing or analyzing a game. It displays search information like principal variations and associated scores, times and that like. It is often implemented as scrollable logging window, always appending text at top or bottom lines.
