		Amyan, a chess engine written by Antonio Dieguez running under Windows, compliant to the Chess Engine Communication Protocol aka WinBoard, and the Universal Chess Interface (UCI). Amyan was first released in 2000, the still available Amyan 1.522 Version from 2002 has an own GUI. The program is written in C++ ^[1], a ported Java applet is able to run in a Web browser using a Java virtual machine ^[2]. Amyan played the CCT4, CCT5 and CCT6 CCT Tournaments, and became the First Annual ACCA Americas' Computer Chess Champion at ACCA 2006, to further play the ACCA 2009. At the 4th Chess Computer Cup 2008 in Carugate, Italy, Amyan was tied with winner DanaSah, both with 5/6 and also equal sum of opponent scores, but Amyan played the draw versus Chiron in round 2, DanaSah in round 5 gaining higher cumulative score.

Board Representation

Amyan's mailbox board array has index 11 for a1 and 88 for h8, so it is apparently a 10*10 board with following index mapping. It further uses bitboards mainly for pawns.

		Bagatur, a free open source chess program under the Eclipse Public License ^[1] written in Java by Krasimir Topchiyski from Bulgaria. The project has started around year 2000. The engine is quite strong, for example the ELO of version 1.4d is about 2500 based on CCRL ^[2] . The open source project is hosted at GitHub ^[3] , where one can find everything relevant like downloads and java source code of the program. Under Windows and Linux the program hasn't its own user interface and uses arbitrary UCI user interfaces like Arena. Under Android there is a game called Chess Art For Kids ^[4] with an own GUI, which incorporates Bagatur as a chess engine.

Etymology

Bagatur (βαγατουρ or βογοτορ) is a higher rank of proto-Bulgarian warrior. According to some authors the word comes from Turkic (bagadur) and literally means brave, brave man. According to the same in the Russian language will pass as Богатыри - hero.

Technical Information

The programming code is structured in multiple Java modules / APIs, which could be used separately, including modules for experiments with Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. 		Belzebub, a WinBoard compliant open source chess engine written by Radosław Kamowski in Java, released in May 2002 as free chess game for mobile phones ^[1] ^[2]. Belzebub played the first and second Polish Computer Chess Championship. After finishing last at the PCCC 2002, Belzebub became runner-up of the uniform category at the PCCC 2003 behind Tytan.

Etymology

Belzebub is the Polish diction of Beelzebub or Baalzebûb, Arabic: بعل الذباب‎, Ba‘al az-Zubab, literally "Lord of the Flies", a Semitic deity that was worshiped in the Philistine city of Ekron. In later Christian and Biblical sources, Beelzebub is referred to as another name for Devil ^[4] ^[5] ^[6]. In Christian demonology, classified by Peter Binsfeld in Tractatus de confessionibus maleficorum & Sagarum an et quanta fides iis adhibenda sit, 1589 ^[7], Beelzebub is one of the seven Princes of Hell ^[8] associated with gluttony, one of the seven deadly sins. Gluttony also occurs in chess ^[9] or even more in computer chess with basically material based evaluation, i.e. grabbing unimportant pawns with the queen, ignoring development and king safety.

Description

Search

Belzebub uses plain 8x8 board arrays, and applies alpha-beta with null move pruning inside an iterative deepening framework with aspiration windows. Move ordering considers the principal variation from previous iteration maintained in a triangular PV-table, MVV-LVA for captures and killer- and history heuristic otherwise.

Repetitions

Like TSCP, Belzebub uses following algorithm to detect repetitions, credited to John Stanback, originated from SCP and his GNU Chess versions ^[10]. However, it may detect false repetitions in case of exchanging two unequal pieces ^[11]. Further, the routine keeps the garbage collector busy by allocating the integer array each call, even if the fifty move counter is less or equal three.

BikJump,
an UCI chess engine written in C++ by Aart Bik that features:

UCI compliant chess engine (runs in e.g. Chessbase Fritz, Chess for Android, or Arena GUI).
Iterative deepening with alpha-beta pruning and quiescent search.
Transposition table, null move pruning, and tactical extensions.
Ability to query Nalimov Endgame Tablebases (3,4,5,6-piece) during search.

All source code of BikJump (except the probing and decompression code for the endgame tablebases, which are used with kind permission of Eugene Nalimov and Andrew Kadatch) has been built from the ground up by Aart as a simple after-hours project to gain some experience with chess engine programming and experiment with new ideas.

Java Version

A derived Java version is used as built-in engine in Chess for Android and Chess for Glass. This application also supports the Universal Chess Interface (UCI) and the Chess Engine Communication Protocol to allow users to play against more powerful third party engines or even play tournaments between engines.

History and Future Plans

BikJump was first released In January, 2007. The first generation (v1.x) was based on a mailbox representation, and over time increased in strength from about 1750 to 2000 RUEL. The second and current generation (v2.x), based on a bitboard representation, was released in November, 2008. Aart now has started work on "Deep" BikJump, featuring multi-threading to perform the search in parallel (commonly referred to as SMP support). Upcoming versions will be designated with the suffix P (e.g. v2.1P) to denote this new parallel support.

		BremboCE, a WinBoard compliant chess engine written by Gianluca Cisana. BremboCE was initially written in C, and first released in February 2002, after Gianluca studied Tom Kerrigan's TSCP and learned how to program a chess engine ^[1]. It had its not too bad tournament debut at CIPS 2002 with 3/6. The latest C-version 0.4 from August 2002 is still available for download . The engine name is based upon the river Brembo in the Province of Bergamo, situated near the author's home ^[2].

Java

After a gap of seven years, in 2009, Gianluca continued the development porting BremboCE from C to Java, running either as standalone WinBoard engine, or as Java applet as part of a web page under control of the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) - in a process separated from the web browser. BremboCE keeps a board array and uses negamax alpha-beta with quiescence considering captures and promotions. The Java engine played the 4th Chess Computer Cup 2009 with 2½/6, winning from Golem and Joker.

		Calculon, named after the Futurama character, is a Java chess engine developed by Barry Smith. It is open source, licensed under the Apache License, Version 2.0 and currently hosted at GitHub ^[1]. Calculon is UCI compatible, uses bitboards as basic data structure, and applies Negamax alpha-beta. The engine regularly plays on ICC under the name CalculonX and has Blitz/Standard ratings there around the 1750 mark ^[2] .

		Carballo, an open source chess engine by Alberto Alonso Ruibal, written in Java, licensed under the GNU General Public License, and first released in 2009 ^[1]. Carballo supports the UCI protocol, and a HTML5 based GUI dubbed Mobialia Chess ^[2], developed by Lukas Laag with the Google Web Toolkit (GWT) using the Vectomatic SVG library ^[3] ^[4]. Board Representation

Carballo is a bitboard engine and applies magic bitboards to determine sliding piece attacks. Staged move generation along with move ordering is controlled by an iterator object which gets the next move during search, and uses legal move generation. This is so far implemented by making and testing whether pseudo-legal moves leave the own king in check.

The search performs alpha-beta PVS inside the iterative deepening loop with aspiration windows, utilizing a transposition table also in quiescence, verified and indexed by Zobrist Keys. Selectivity considers the wide range of state of the art techniques.

		Chess for Android, written by Aart Bik, is a standalone chess application for Android. The application is available for free at the Android Market ^[1] or as direct download ^[2] and consists of a chess engine (a Java version derived from the UCI engine BikJump that is written in C++) and a GUI. The application accepts moves through the touchscreen, the trackball, or through the keyboard (e2e4 pushes the king pawn, e1g1 castles king side, etc.). An optional "move coach" highlights valid user moves during input and last played engine move. Full game navigation buttons enable users to correct mistakes or analyze games. Games import and export as FEN/PGN to and from the clipboard, load and save as file, are set up through a position editor, or import as application/x-chess-pgn MIME type on startup. A draw by stalemate, insufficient material, the fifty move rule, or threefold repetition is recognized. The engine plays at various levels (including random, against itself in auto-play, or free-play, where the game can be used as a "magnetic chessboard"). The user can play either side and, independently, view the board from the perspective of white or black. The application also supports the Universal Chess Interface (UCI) and Chess Engine Communication Protocol (often simply called WinBoard or XBoard protocol), which allows users to play against more powerful third party engines or even play tournaments between engines. Engine setup features pondering, infinite analysis, hash tables, multiple threads, endgame tablebases (Nalimov , Gaviota, Scorpio, Robbobases), and opening test suites. Chess for Android recognizes all ChessBase compatible engines that are installed on the same device. Since version 5.6 released in February 2018 ^[3], Chess for Android supports the electronic chess board of the Millennium ChessGenius ^[4].

Chess for Glass, written by Aart Bik, is Glassware ^[1] ^[2] that runs directly on a Google Glass device. The user can enter moves by simply saying the moves (voice input feature), or by using the touchpad. Other features include a choice in board color, spoken move announcements, and the ability to import any third party chess engine to replace the friendly built-in Java engine. Chess for Glass recognizes all ChessBase compatible engines that are installed on the same Glass device, and supports both the popular UCI and XBoard/WinBoard protocols.

chess22k,
an UCI compliant open source chess engine by Sander Maassen vd Brink, written in Java first released in January 2017 ^[1]. While already in the 2400 Elo range using a 64-bit Java Runtime Environment (JRE), it has not initially implemented a tapered evaluation, but abrupt transition based on piece counts per side to distinguish between middlegame and endgame terms ^[2] ^[3]. However, tapered evaluation was implemented in chess22k 1.5 along with new evaluation terms adjusted by Texel's tuning method ^[4]. In November 2017, chess22k had its over the board tournament debut, version 1.6 played the CSVN PT 52 in Leiden, quite successful - shared 4th place with 6/9. Soon released afterwards, chess22k 1.6 requires Java 9 ^[5].

chess4j,
an open source chess engine written by James Swafford using Java based technologies and the Chess Engine Communication Protocol, released under the MIT License, and first published in September 2012 ^[1]. The engine was hosted on SourceForge, and meant to be a test bed for various interests, including experimenting with different JVM based languages, parallel and distributed programming techniques, and machine learning. Since version 3.2 released in March 2017, chess4j became a bitboard engine, using magic bitboards to generate moves ^[2], now hosted on GitHub.

CuckooChess name was chosen because it's transposition table is based on Cuckoo hashing ^[3] .

Description

Cupcake's move generator is almost identical to Bruja's, Dan's earlier C++ program, but its speed is about half ^[2]. Cupcake utilizes rotated bitboards for sliding piece attacks. The Java-bitscan uses the 64-bit De Bruijn multiplication.

Search

Search is PVS with transposition table inside an iterative deepening framework with aspiration windows in conjunction with null move pruning, LMR, and check extensions.

Evaluation

Cupcake applies a tapered eval for a smooth transition between the game phases and interpolates between the aggregated opening and endgame scores. Beside material balance of point values and piece-square tables, Cupcake considers mobility, king safety, and pawn structure including passed pawns.

		DeepBrutePos, a chess engine by Folkert van Heusden written in Java. It is a partial rewrite of Pos. Pos was a wild experiment while DeepBrutePos is a more conventional brute force negamax with ab pruning program. It "talks" both the XBoard and UCI protocols. Apart from being a regular chess engine, it also includes a "puppet master" mode with which it presents itself as an UCI- or XBoard engine and underneath talks to UCI or XBoard engines running on other systems. For each move it asks them what move to do and then selects the most common suggested one ^[1].

		Eden, a Chess Engine Communication Protocol and UCI compliant chess engine by Nicolai Czempin, written in Java. A compiled version is available from Jim Ablett's Winboard Chess Projects site. Eden is a tribute to Wilkins' Paradise ^[1], but apparently does not incorporate Paradise' search paradigms. Eden represents the board as one-dimensional 10x8 array, and applies a straight forward alpha-beta with iterative deepening and quiescence search, utilizing three Zobrist based Hash tables, for transpositions, pawn structure, and opening book ^[2].

		Fischerle, a Java-based chess engine that has been developed by Roland Stuckardt. Fischerle implements the UCI protocol. It is recommended to employ it from within the Arena environment. The static evaluation parameters of Fischerle are amenable to external fine tuning based on a concept of so-called efb (evaluation factor block) files, thus enabling the user to influence, within certain bounds, Fischerle’s playing style (e. g. to prefer closed positions, etc.). Fischerle comes with its own, small opening book, covering about 220K positions and some 540K moves. Fischerle supports pondering via its UCI interface.

Performance

According to extensive test tournaments, Fischerle is sufficiently well equipped with chess wit in order to compete in the CCRL 40/40 Elo 2250-2350 range. Fischerle 0.9.70 SE has been ranked at place 235 of the CCRL 40/40 list with a CCRL 40/40 Elo score of 2291 (March 25, 2017).

Latest Version

Fischerle 0.9.80 SE (March 24, 2017) - a slightly more aggressive forward pruning scheme is now applied; quiescence search has been mildly refined (adding, in particular, delta pruning); the piece value assigned to bishops and the bishop pair bonus have been slightly reduced; king safety ealuation has been refined; the mate approaching scheme has been enhanced.

		Fischerle ^[3] is named after a famous character of Elias Canetti’s novel „Die Blendung“ („Auto-da-Fé“) ^[4] ^[5] , which plays in Vienna ^[6] around protagonist Peter Kien, a middle-aged philologist and Sinologist: Siegfried Fischerle ^[7] , a Jewish ^[8] hunchbacked dwarf and pander, is a chess addict whose dream is it to go to America to challenge chess champion José Raúl Capablanca in order to get rich and famous. Canetti wrote his novel in the years 1930/31, coincidentally more than one decade before Nazi German Oberfeldwebel Siegfried Fischer was decorated with the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross, Jewish artist and poet Peter Kien died in Auschwitz concentration camp, and more than two decades before chess genius Bobby Fischer entered the international chess scene ^[9] .

		Godot, an open source chess engine by Ulysse Carion, written in Java, and licensed under the GNU General Public License. It was subject of a project work Creating a Chess-Playing Computer Program at La Jolla High School in 2013 ^[1], with which he participated in the Senior Division of Mathematics & Software of the 2013 California State Science Fair ^[2], honorable mentioned ^[3]. While the goal was to create an original program that uses a carefully-selected combination of the hundreds of ways to assault the challenge of teaching a computer to play chess ^[4], a large amount of Godot's code is based on Stef Luijten's Winglet and Alberto Ruibal's Carballo. The name Godot comes from Samuel Beckett's play Waiting For Godot because the author found himself waiting indefinite periods of time for Godot to play a move ^[5].
