Arasan's development started in the early 90s, the first version, released in 1994 was a 16-bit program running under Windows 3.1 using an 8x8 Board, incremental updated attack tables and its own GUI, evolving to a portable 32-bit and later 64-bit program, utilizing bitboards to determine its sliding piece attacks with rotated bitboard lookups. In 2008, rotated were replaced by Magic bitboards, which gave Arasan about a 20-25% speedup ^[1]. Despite its own GUI, Arasan early supported the Chess Engine Communication Protocol and later UCI as well, to run under Windows, Linux and Mac OS ^[2]. The latest version of Arasan and all major versions, including Version 1.0 from March 1994, are available as source code from the Arasan.org site ^[3] . Jon's change logs, bug fix reports and tournament reports over the time are available from forum archives, as well the recent ones from the Arasan blog ^[4]

Bitboard Trials

Lately I've been working on a new major release of Arasan. I have spent the last few months working on the search engine, trying to improve speed and performance. I tried some experiments with a bitboard move representation, but I have backed off on that for now.

With bitboards, I got a nice reduction in tree size (bitboards allow a more accurate swap-down analysis than I had before, and this improves move ordering and allows better "culling" of losing captures in the quiescence search).

However, currently the program relies pretty heavily on incrementally generated attack information, and I didn't have that implemented to work with bitboards, so I had to compute attacks as needed. Unfortunately, the current program "needs" to do this much more often than Crafty does, so the loss from computing attacks more than balanced out the gains from bitboards. This is fixable, I'm sure, but I've put off further work on it for now.

Magic Bitboards

The main change has been to re-work the code to use "magic" bitboard logic instead of rotated bitboards. This has given about a 20-25% speedup. I have also had to re-write the evaluation function to take advantage of bitboard attack functions for king safety and mobility.

PEXT/PDEP Bitboards

Arasan 20.3, released in November 2017, performs PEXT/PDEP Bitboards if compiled for the BMI2 instruction set ^[9] to replace Fancy Magic Bitboards in looking up sliding piece attacks ^[10]

Automated Tuning

Arasan 19.2, released in November 2016, now applies Texel's Tuning Method by default and supports the Adam gradient descent algorithm ^[11] ^[12].

Tournament Play

Arasan went online in December, 1996 ^[13] , and played almost all major online computer chess tournaments, such as CCT Tournaments, ACCA Americas' Computer Chess Championship, ACCA World Computer Rapid Chess Championship, TCEC, and International Gsei Web Tournaments. Arasan 15.1 ^[14] won the ACCA 2012 ^[15] , Arasan 16.0 the WCRCC 2013 ^[16] . Over the board, Arasan is active at the CSVN Programmers Tournaments operated by Tessa Pijl. Arasan was runner-up behind The Baron in May 2014 at the PT 46 one point behind, as well in June 2015 at the PT 48 with the same score according to the tiebreak rules ^[17].

		Atlas, an UCI compliant chess engine by Andrés Manzanares Campillo written in C++, with executables running under Linux and Windows. The development of Atlas started in 2004, initially representing the board as 0x88 vector attacks mailbox along with piece-lists, supporting WinBoard, and written in C. Atlas 2.90 was a complete rewrite released in June 2011, a bitboard approach only supporting UCI ^[1].

Belofte,
a chess engine written in C by Yves De Billoëz and released under the GPL license v2. Belofte is a console application, but supports the Chess Engine Communication Protocol aka WinBoard/XBoard protocol.

Features

The engine supports Winboard v1 and v2 protocol alongside the Belofte protocol. The engine also supports EPD test sets and can be run with initialization files. Games are saved in PGN format. PGN files can be converted into an opening book. Internally, Belofte keeps a two-dimensional 8x8 board performing pure negamax alpha-beta so far with a once estimated depth rather than iterative deepening ^[1].

History

Development started in 2005 and version 0.2.x made appearance on freechess.org chess server and in source code. At that time, it was released with a custom license (but still free for the open source community). Versions 0.3 till 0.6 were converted to C++ and developed under windows but compilation on other platforms failed. Source code for those versions is available. Look for the branch in the source repository. In 2017, the old version was re-released under GPL license and a new version 0.9.x is making its appearance. It is a branch from the 0.2 release and gradually, all changes from the 0.3+ branches will be included.

Rating

The engine performs currently at 1000-1200 Elo. In some tournaments, it achieved around 1500 ELO.

BikJump,
an UCI chess engine written in C++ by Aart Bik that features:

UCI compliant chess engine (runs in e.g. Chessbase Fritz, Chess for Android, or Arena GUI).
Iterative deepening with alpha-beta pruning and quiescent search.
Transposition table, null move pruning, and tactical extensions.
Ability to query Nalimov Endgame Tablebases (3,4,5,6-piece) during search.

All source code of BikJump (except the probing and decompression code for the endgame tablebases, which are used with kind permission of Eugene Nalimov and Andrew Kadatch) has been built from the ground up by Aart as a simple after-hours project to gain some experience with chess engine programming and experiment with new ideas.

Java Version

A derived Java version is used as built-in engine in Chess for Android and Chess for Glass. This application also supports the Universal Chess Interface (UCI) and the Chess Engine Communication Protocol to allow users to play against more powerful third party engines or even play tournaments between engines.

History and Future Plans

BikJump was first released In January, 2007. The first generation (v1.x) was based on a mailbox representation, and over time increased in strength from about 1750 to 2000 RUEL. The second and current generation (v2.x), based on a bitboard representation, was released in November, 2008. Aart now has started work on "Deep" BikJump, featuring multi-threading to perform the search in parallel (commonly referred to as SMP support). Upcoming versions will be designated with the suffix P (e.g. v2.1P) to denote this new parallel support.

		Cassandre, an Chess Engine Communication Protocol and UCI compliant open source chess engine under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL), written in C++ by Raphael Grundrich, Thomas Adolph and Jean-Francois Romang, first released in March 2003. Cassandre started as a student project at Louis Pasteur University, Strasbourg ^[1]. It is based on bitboards, in particular Rotated bitboards with 256 occupancy states to determine sliding piece attacks, bitscan aka first- and last one by conditional 16-bit lookups, and population count by eight byte lookups credited to Dann Corbit, and uses the alpha-beta algorithm ^[2].

Cheng,
an UCI compliant open source chess engine by Martin Sedlak, written in C++ as exercise in generic programming, first released as Cheng3 in April 2011. Cheng is able to play Chess960, target platforms are Windows, Linux, Mac OS and Android systems ^[1]. Cheng4 0.38, released in January 2015, is available at GitHub under the permissive zlib license ^[2].

Description

Cheng ^[3] is a bitboard engine using fancy magic bitboards to determine sliding piece attacks. It applies staged move generation.

Search

The parallel multi-threaded search performs PVS alpha-beta with a shared transposition table inside a fractional ply iterative deepening framework with aspiration windows, featuring Lazy SMP ^[4]. Search routines are instantiated at compile time from a generic routine with three boolean template parameters, PV-node, in check, and null move pruning on-off, similar quiescence search has four instances for on-off combinations of PV-node and check. Further selectivity is applied by mate distance pruning, razoring, IID, futility pruning, check extensions and late move reductions. Move ordering is improved by the killer- and history heuristic.

Evaluation

Evaluation employs three further hash tables - evaluation hash table, material hash table and pawn hash table. The evaluation function determines hardware population count support at compile time, passed as template parameter to internal eval functions, finally adding a tempo bonus. Pawn and piece specific evaluators are further implemented with a color template, considering pawn structure, mobility, king safety and various piece pattern. Most of the gain in Cheng4 0.38, released in January 2015, is due to eval tuning using the Texel's Tuning Method by Peter Österlund ^[5].

		Critter, an UCI compatible cross-platform chess engine by Richard Vida, executables freely available for personal use to run under Windows, Linux, Android and Mac OS ^[1] . Starting in late 2008, Critter was first written in Object Pascal compiled with Delphi, now available as open source engine ^[2] ^[3] , and was ported to C / C++ in 2009 ^[4] . It consistently evolved through various board representations from 0x88 to bitboards, as acknowledged by Richard Vida, also incorporating ideas from strong open source programs like Ippolit ^[5] , to a world class engine which achieved top five of most engine rating lists ^[6] .In 2012, Critter had its over the board debut at the ICT 2012, where it became strong runner-up behind the Rybka cluster.

Description

Critter applies a principal variation search with aspiration windows, null move pruning ^[8] and other state of the art forward pruning, reduction and extension techniques, such as the Botvinnik-Markoff extensions ^[9] . It can search in parallel with up to eight threads ^[10] , supports Gaviota tablebases ^[11] , and is able to play Chess960 ^[12] . Critter features a tapered eval with a score pair class and overloaded operators ^[13] ^[14] , and blockage detection in late endgames ^[15] .

		CT800, a FLOSS dedicated chess computer designed by Rasmus Althoff. The CT800 features an ARM Cortex M4 microcontroller of an Olimex H405 board ^[1] that operates up to 168 Mhz, with 1 MiB of flash memory, 192+4 kiB of SRAM, and multiple I/O and USB connectors, with a 4x20 character text display, two leds, and a 4x4 + 1 keypad as peripherals aka user interface. Voltage source is due to four NiMH rechargeable AA batteries or external 5 V DC power supply. CT800's firmware is developed by Rasmus Althoff, released under the GPL Version 3, the chess playing software is an ARM port of George Georgopoulos' open source engine NG-play ^[2] including a KPK bitbase by Marcel van Kervinck ^[3] ^[4] and runs on both Linux or Android.

		Daydreamer, (DayDreamer) an UCI compliant open source chess engine by Aaron Becker, written in C (C99) with Windows, Linux, and Mac OS binaries available ^[1], also able to play Chess960. Developed since early 2009, the program was named Daydreamer after a bug in an early version caused it to occasionally follow up very strong play with bizarre blunders, as though it had lost its focus on the game and its mind was wandering aimlessly ^[2]. First released in August 2009 ^[3], it initially used Tomasz Michniewski's simplified evaluation function ^[4], while subsequent versions were rapidly improving since mid 2010. DayDreamer played the CCT12 and ACCA 2010 online tournaments.

Description

Board Representation

Daydreamer uses piece-lists and a 16x16 vector attacks board around a 0x88 board inside its middle 16x8 slots ^[6]. Move generation of pieces is unrolled over directions, capture generation of sliding pieces for quiescence uses the leading efficient blocker loop, i.e. for one vertical direction ^[7]:

Search

The search is PVS alpha-beta with transposition table, IID, null move pruning combined with mate threat extensions, razoring, futility pruning and late move reductions inside an iterative deepening framework with aspiration windows and floating point fractional ply depth, the latter credited to Ivan Bonkin and his Bison program ^[8] ^[9].

Opening Book

Daydreamer supports PolyGlot and ctg opening books ^[10], the huffman codes and ctg move decoding based on Stephan Vermeire's ctg code for Brutus ^[11].

Endgame Tablebases

Daydreamer is able to probe Gaviota Tablebases as well as Scorpio Bitbases ^[12].

Evaluation

Daydreamer's evaluation might be lazy with respect to bounds and margins based on cached material, considering imbalances, and piece-square table scores only. Otherwise, supported by a pawn hash table, it takes pawn structure, mobility, king safety and various other terms into account, speculatively aggregating middle- and endgame scores, which were finally tapered by a range of 24 game phases.

		DiscoCheck, (former DoubleCheck) a free open source engine under the GNU General Public License, written in C++. DiscoCheck is UCI compatible and can be compiled for Linux, Android ^[1] , Windows, and Mac OS X. It performs PVS alpha-beta with transposition table, null move pruning, LMR and various enhancements inside an iterative deepening framework with aspiration windows. DiscoCheck determines sliding piece attacks with magic bitboards, first using Pradu Kannan's implementation, later the GPL conform version by Borko Bošković as used in MinkoChess (then called Umko) ^[2] . Early versions used the author's own implementation of rotated bitboards, adapted from his earlier engine BibiChess 0.5. In June 2017, a new DiscoChess dubbed Demolito was announced, completely rewritten, featuring SMP and Chess960 ^[3] ^[4].

		Embla, an UCI compliant open source chess engine by Folkert van Heusden, first released in August 2015 ^[1] . Since version 0.8 Embla supports Syzygy endgame bases. So far, Embla played thd PT 49, PT 50 and PT 51 over the board. The program is further incorporated inside Folkert's self made chess computer board, dubbed Embla Board ^[2], and is tested within a Raspberry Pi cluster. The engine is available for Linux, Android, MacOS X and Windows operating systems.

		Fruit, until Version 2.1 open source, is a groundbreaking UCI compatible chess engine developed by primary author Fabien Letouzey. It made its first appearance to the public in March 2004, when Fruit was a basic program with a very simple evaluation and basic search. However, since then it made progress adding about 100 Elo to each new release (1.5, 2.0, 2.1 and Fruit 2.2) ^[1]. The release of Fruit until version 2.1 under the GNU General Public License was a "revolution" in computer chess in 2005 - an open source engine was "suddenly" competitive with the long time leading programs Shredder and Junior, as demonstrated at the WCCC 2005, where Fruit became runner up behind Zappa. After the strong Massy 2005 over the board debut, and the great success of Reykjavik, where Fabien Letouzey met his professional colleagues, he decided to close the source ^[2] and to go commercial ^[3] - while Fruit derivatives have already appeared based on the source code of Fruit 2.1, most notably Toga ^[4] by Thomas Gaksch, and Gambit Fruit by Ryan Benitez, who in late 2005 joint forces with Fabian for the commercial endeavor. Fabien finished his commercial computer chess career so far in 2007 ^[5]. Fruit 2.3+ is non GPL with full rights given to Ryan Benitez who continued the Fruit development porting it to bitboards ^[6], while Fruit 2.1 is now owned by the Free Software Foundation ^[7], released as GNU Chess 6 ^[8].

Tournament Play

Fruit had its strong debut at CCT7, February 2005, and over the board at Massy 2005 in June 2005, with the then surprising shared second place, tied with Chess Wizard behind AnMon. After the mentioned breakthrough at the WCCC 2005 in Reykjavík, Fruit played the DOCCC 2005, operated by new book author Jeroen Noomen, who short later left the team for Rybka, the IPCCC 2005 b, CCT8 and the DOCCC 2006. Fruit continued to play CCT Tournaments from CCT10 in 2008.

Innovations

Fruit was and still is one of the most influential didactic open source programs. It first uses a 16x12 Vector attack board representation, since Version 1.5 a 16x16 board to have a symmetric treatment of files and ranks ^[11] . Its structure and C source code was very clean and apparently bug-free due to runtime checking a lot of preconditions using debug asserts. While late move reductions (LMR) might be used in other programs before, Fabien's history based implementation in conjunction with history leaf pruning made LMR very popular. Another Fruit innovation, despite not absolutely new and already a known issue, and related to what is mentioned in evaluation philosophy, was tapered evaluation to avoid discontinuity ^[12] .

Fruit Team

Beside Fabien Letouzey as primary author and opening book author Marc Lacrosse, Ryan Benitez joined the Fruit-Team in December 2005. Before he developed Gambit Fruit with some interesting changes on the basis of the last open-source-version 2.1 ^[13]. Joachim Rang was the main tester of Fruit since its first public appearance, tuned parameters, and tested evaluation and search features ^[14] .

Fruit 64

Ryan Benitez continued the development on the non public Fruit in 2007 ^[16]. He converted the board representation from vector attacks to bitboards, and naturally, Fruit has become a new evaluation to go along with that ^[17]. Fruit by Fabien Letouzey and Ryan Benitez played the CCT10, the CCT11, where it became shared winner along with Bright after the later Rybka disqualification ^[18], and the CCT13 in 2011.

Many programmers took a lot of ideas and implementation details from Fruit, as noted by Vasik Rajlich ^[19] :

Alexander Schmidt:

The increase in playing strength of the latest chess engines is unbelieveable. We have since some time with Fruit 2.1 by Fabien Letouzey a very strong open source engine. Do you see a relation between the published sources of such a strong engine and the increase of strength in computer chess in general? How much influence do the ideas of Fruit have on the future of computerchess?

Vasik Rajlich:

Yes, the publication of Fruit 2.1 was huge. Look at how many engines took a massive jump in its wake: Rybka, Hiarcs, Fritz, Zappa, Spike, List, and so on. I went through the Fruit 2.1 source code forwards and backwards and took many things.

Fruit Reloaded

In March 2014, ten years after the initial Fruit 1.0 release, Daniel Mehrmann initiated a "let's update Fruit" called Fruit Reloaded ^[20]. With some help from Ryan Benitez, the aim is to add SMP to Fruit and upgrade search and evaluation with modern techniques ^[21] ^[22]. Simultaneously, Fabien Letouzey waved goodbye to Fruit and published his new open source engine Senpai, also with Ryan Benitez and Joachim Rang involved ^[23].

		Fruit Reloaded, an independent fork of Fruit 2.1, started by Daniel Mehrmann in 2012 ^[1] as a "let's update Fruit" project, published in March 2014 as announced by Fabien Letouzey ^[2]. Like its predecessor, Fruit Reloaded is UCI compliant and open source licensed under the GPL v3 ^[3]. Sources are available from a GitHub repository ^[4]. With some help from Ryan Benitez, the aim was to add a parallel search and to upgrade search and evaluation with recent techniques, still following the clean coding style of Fabien's work. Beside newly added, tweaked or tuned selectivity and evaluation features, Fruit Reloaded can now probe Nalimov Tablebases and Scorpio Bitbases, configurable by appropriate UCI options. Binaries are available for Windows, Linux, Mac OS X and Android platforms, hosted by Steve Maughan's Computer Chess Programming ^[5].

		Gaïa, (Gaia) a free UCI and prior to version 3.0 Chess Engine Communication Protocol compliant chess engine by Jean-Francois Romang and David Rabel, written in C, with executables provided for Mac OS, Linux and Windows operating systems. 		Gaviota, a Chess Engine Communication Protocol and UCI compatible chess engine written by FM Miguel A. Ballicora in the C programming language. When It was released in 2001, it was the first Argentinian engine available. Gaviota supports its own endgame tablebases, book, and can use several processors (SMP). It has the ability to learn by remembering book lines and positions that were not good. Gaviota avoids them in following games. There are versions for Linux, Android, Windows, and Mac OS (0.86) ^[1]. The Gaviota team is completed by tester Adam Hair ^[2].

Etymology

Miguel A. Ballicora on the name of his program ^[8]:

Gaviota means "seagull", from the story of Jonathan Livingston Seagull. The spirit of the engine reflects the free spirit of the fictional bird, of flying for fun and excitement, not for food. In Spanish, the book was translated to Juan Salvador Gaviota. In addition, my wife's nickname is Gaby, so it has double meaning.

Gaviota played various ACCA Americas' Computer Chess Championships, CCT Tournaments and ACCA World Computer Rapid Chess Championships, further the IGWT 2013 and multiple TCEC seasons.

		Glaurung, an UCI-compatible open source chess engine developed by Tord Romstad under the GPL 3. Glaurung is the forerunner of Stockfish by Marco Costalba, Joona Kiiski and Tord Romstad, as well the Apple iPhone program powered by Stockfish, incorporating the Glaurung GUI. The companion program GlaurungServer allows to run the chess engine remotely on a home computer ^[1]. Glaurung, first released in fall 2004, is written in C, later versions completely in C++. It is portable and able to run on Windows, Linux, Mac OS X and mobile platforms. Chess960 compliant, Glaurung played two Livingston Chess960 Computer World Championships, in 2005 where it became third, and the in 2006. It won two times the International Open Polish Computer Chess Championships, in 2007 ^[2] and 2008, and further played the ICT 2007, and the CCT8, CCT10, and CCT11 online tournaments.

Description

Board Representation

Glaurung versions prior to 2.0 applied 16x16 Vector Attacks ^[5] ^[6], combining the property of the 10x12 board with its surrounding ranks and files, which ensure a knight can not jump off the board, with the property that a square difference uniquely maps a vector in the Chebyshev vector space of a chessboard. With the advent of Magic Bitboards, Glaurung 2 was a complete rewrite ^[7] utilizing bitboards as primary board representation.

Search

Glaurung is a PVS searcher ^[8], using advanced selectivity, and was beside Fruit the program which made LMR popular ^[9] . Since early 2006 Glaurung 1.x supports SMP search.

Evaluation

Glaurung's evaluation is tellingly summarized by Tord's evaluation philosophy, covering orthogonality, continuity, sense of progress and good worst case behavior ^[10]. Glaurung applies a tapered evaluation to make a smooth transition between the game phases.

Gaurung GUI

In 2007, Tord released an own UCI compliant GUI for Mac OS X, written in Objective-C using the GNUstep ^[11] implementation of the Cocoa Widget toolkit ^[12], later ported for the iPhone.

Play Magnus

In February 2014, a modified and tuned version of Glaurung became the chess engine of Play Magnus ^[14], a chess application for iPhone and iPod Touch by Play Magnus AS, an Oslo, Norway-based company founded by Magnus Carlsen ^[15], who became World Chess Champion in November 2013.

		GullChess, (Gull) an UCI compliant open source engine in the public domain by Vadim Demichev ^[1], inspired by ideas and code from other open source engines, notably from Ivanhoe of the Ippolit family of programs, and from Strelka, whose authors are suspected of reverse engineering Rybka, to examine and use her ideas. Ron Murawski's Computer-Chess Wiki mentions GullChess as Ivanhoe derivative ^[2]. The further socialization of concrete implementations with disputed origin in the public domain, as already started with Ippolit, remains a highly controversial topic.

Description

GullChess applies magic bitboards to determine sliding piece attacks, a material table indexing scheme with disjoint light and dark bishops, PVS with aspiration windows, and a parallel search based on processes. Version 1.2 is written in compact and neat C++ code and consists of only one single source file. It features generic function templates in recursive search routines as well in various functions called by search, i.e. for move generation, with side to move and hash-move exclusion for singular extensions as boolean template parameters, delegating conditions on these to compile-time.

Releases & Forks

Gull 2.1

Gull 2.1, released in June 2013, has evaluation weights optimized with the use of automated tuning (source code included). Gull's 2.1 evaluation is no longer almost identical to that of Ivanhoe. Further, it features some minor search, time management and SMP efficiency enhancements ^[4].

Gull 2.8 beta

Gull 2.8 beta, released in January 2014 and competing TCEC Season 6, comes with minor search tweaks but a full evaluation rewrite, being back an original engine ^[5]. A BMI2 build provides a small speedup on Haswell architecture due to the replacement of magic bitboards by PEXT bitboards.

Gull 3

Gull 3, released April 17, 2014, with further optimization of evaluation weights and a rewritten SMP search, features nonlinear king shelter evaluation and more endgame knowledge. Basil Falcinelli implemented a Linux port ^[6] and Syzygy Bases support, introducing Fathom ^[7], while Michael Byrne worked on a Mac OS port ^[8] dubbed Hawkeye ^[9], Tom Hyer introduced his Gull 3 derivative Roc ^[10], and Norman Schmidt SeaGull also based on Gull 3 ^[11].

LazyGull

LazyGull is a free UCI chess engine under the MIT License derived from Gull 3 by Basil Falcinelli ^[12]. LazyGull features Syzygy Bases support via Fathom, Lazy SMP, and PDEP bitboards for modern x86-64 CPUs, and is portable to Windows, Linux and MacOSX ^[13].
