		Bestia, a Chess Engine Communication Protocol compliant chess engine written by George Lyapko in Pascal and compiled with Delphi ^[1], first released in July 2000 ^[2], with executables to run under Windows, and more recently, to x86-64 Mac OS ^[3]. Beside the transposition table, Bestia features a pawn hash table, and is able to learn from its failures ^[4] ^[5]. Bestia participated at three Hungarian Chessprogram Open, and won two times operated by Gábor Szõts, the MASPV 2001 and the MASPV 2003, both with a 100% score.

		Bison, an UCI compliant open source chess engine by Ivan Bonkin, written in C++ and licensed under GPLv3. Bison played the CCCCISC 2008 over the board. Whether Bison is merely a rewrite of the Fruit concepts, using bitboards instead of vector attack arrays, as suggested by Dann Corbit ^[1], might be subject of scientific research - opposed to the Rybka Controversy, both sources are freely availably ^[2] ^[3].

Description

Board Representation

Bison is a bitboard engine and uses rotated bitboards to determine sliding piece attacks. It performs the 2x32-bit SWAR-implementation to count populations, and De Bruijn multiplication to scan bits forward in bitboard serialization.

Search

Bison applies PVS alpha-beta with transposition table, null move pruning with zugzwang verification search, razoring, IID, futility-, history-, delta- and mate distance pruning, LMR and various extensions inside an iterative deepening framework with aspiration windows and floating point fractional ply depths. SEE is used in move ordering and to determine winning tactical moves in quiescence.

Evaluation

Evaluation is sped up by pre-initialized material-tables indexed à la Strelka and a pawn hash table and might be lazy. It otherwise takes pawn structure, mobility considering pinned pieces and king piece tropism and various pattern and attacks under account with focus on king safety and passed pawns, speculatively aggregating middle- and endgame scores, which were tapered by a range of 24 game phases.

		Bobcat, a strong open source chess engine under the GNU General Public License, written in C++ by Gunnar Harms. The so far only concrete implementation of the abstract protocol class supports UCI. The development started in the second half of 2008, and the program played on FICS under the handle 'Almere', the name of Gunnar's home town on the Flevopolder, two meters below sea level ^[1]. Bobcat played the CCT13 with 4½/7 and the WCRCC 2011 with 6/10. Bobcat's opening book is made by Denis Mendoza ^[2].

Description

Bitboards

Bobcat is a bitboard engine and uses Pradu Kannan's magic bitboards ^[4] to determine sliding piece attacks, and (conditionally compiled) Matt Taylor's folded forward bitscan ^[5].

Search

Bobcat's search is PVS alpha-beta with transposition table inside an iterative deepening framework with aspiration windows and fractional ply increments, and uses exception handling, catching integers for search termination. Selectivity is applied by extensions for singular moves ^[6], single replies, pawn moves to the seventh rank and safe checks, further by fractional reductions of none tactical late moves, adaptive nullmove pruning and various pruning and razoring techniques. The quiescence search considers captures and promotions ^[7]. Two search threads access a shared hash table.

Evaluation

A material class encapsulates point values, material balance and interior node recognizer, the tapered eval features piece-square tables and population count mobility and considers pawn structure with focus on passed pawns, king safety and multiple other piece related features.

		Capivara, an UCI compliant chess engine written by Lourenço Araujo de Oliveira Junior in C++. Starting with TSCP ^[1], Lourenço changed and further implemented new methods in evaluation and search, and Tom's simple chess program evolved to a new chess engine which plays with a lot of courage, called Capivara ^[2]. Capivara LK, with Tom Kerrigan mentioned as co-author, played the CCT13, Capivara the CCT15 with 3/6 ^[3]. Capivara's opening book is based on Harry Schnapp's HS-Classic Book ^[4].

		Chess Tiger, a chess engine by Christophe Théron. Chess Tiger and the version dubbed Gambit Tiger ^[1] competed the WMCCC 1997, WCCC 1999, WMCCC 2000 (3rd place) and the WMCCC 2001, won three times the French Computer Chess Championship, three times the French Programmers Tournament, two times the Spanish Computer Chess Championships, three times the Dutch Open Computer Chess Championship, and the BELCT 2001. As once mentioned by Christophe, Chess Tiger uses a resource friendly 16x16 Board Vector Attack approach ^[2]. Chess Tiger is suited to run on various platforms, an UCI compatible PC version is available from Lokasoft ^[3] , and Chess Tiger 15 from ChessBase ^[4] . Recent versions focus on PDAs, Tablet computers, and Smartphones, such as the free Palm version ^[5] , and the releases for Apple's iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, all running under Apples iOS Mobile operating system ^[6], also incorporated in Apple's Chess Pro - with coach ^[7].

The only tiger playing chess in the world! This program, developed under the Caribbean sun, is a blitz specialist. Recently it has greatly been improved and rewritten for 32 bits processors, bringing its level close to the best "state of the art" PC computer chess.

1999

Chess Tiger used to be a very good tactical program, but has been improved to include more positional knowledge and is now a more balanced chess player. Chess Tiger is still developed under the sun, in Guadeloupe (French West Indies).

		Chester, a private chess engine written by Steve Timson. Chester is a solid tactical program, applying singular extensions restricted to fairly near-root nodes disjoint from recapture extensions ^[1] . Inspired by comments Bruce Moreland made at CCT3, if a (significantly) reduced depth search of the moves at a node reveal that only one move produced a score near alpha and the rest are all worse, then extend it. Steve further worked on positional knowledge during the development and mentioned Chester does not have any special bad bishop code beyond mobility ^[2] . Chester played a strong CCT3 with 4½/8 and CCT4 with 6/11.

		CookieCat, an educational open source chess program by Steven Edwards designed for pedagogical purposes, written in Free Pascal ^[1]. CookieCat evolved from the earlier Bozochess project ^[2] announced in October 2011 ^[3], renamed in December 2011 ^[4], and first released in January 2012 ^[5] under the permissive BSD License. However, Steven's wish that his CookieCat should be easily searchable on the net without too many false positives didn't fulfill when Steven Universe came up with a fictional character ^[6] and ice cream ^[7] in 2013.

Description

CookieCat utilizes bitboards as basic data structure to represent the board. Inside CookieCat's source code ^[9], there are three groups of routines named after some of Steven's feline companions. There are the Lucky positional evaluator routines, the Smokey mate finder routines, and the Spooky general search routines. The names were chosen not so much to be cute, but rather to make it easier for others to identify the program's functional organization ^[10]. CookieCat features five hash-tables, beside the main transposition table, an endgame tablebase cache, a pawn hash table, evaluation hash table, and a dedicated perft hash table, and can further probe an opening book ^[11] and Edwards' tablebases.

		Critter, an UCI compatible cross-platform chess engine by Richard Vida, executables freely available for personal use to run under Windows, Linux, Android and Mac OS ^[1] . Starting in late 2008, Critter was first written in Object Pascal compiled with Delphi, now available as open source engine ^[2] ^[3] , and was ported to C / C++ in 2009 ^[4] . It consistently evolved through various board representations from 0x88 to bitboards, as acknowledged by Richard Vida, also incorporating ideas from strong open source programs like Ippolit ^[5] , to a world class engine which achieved top five of most engine rating lists ^[6] .In 2012, Critter had its over the board debut at the ICT 2012, where it became strong runner-up behind the Rybka cluster.

Description

Critter applies a principal variation search with aspiration windows, null move pruning ^[8] and other state of the art forward pruning, reduction and extension techniques, such as the Botvinnik-Markoff extensions ^[9] . It can search in parallel with up to eight threads ^[10] , supports Gaviota tablebases ^[11] , and is able to play Chess960 ^[12] . Critter features a tapered eval with a score pair class and overloaded operators ^[13] ^[14] , and blockage detection in late endgames ^[15] .

		Dolphin, a WinBoard compliant open source chess program under the terms of the GNU General Public License written in 2009 by Nguyen Viet Huy in C#. Dolphin comes with an own graphical user interface. It uses a 0x88 array and piece lists to represent the board. The search is PVS alpha-beta with transposition table and adaptive nullmove pruning inside an iterative deepening framework. Killer- and history heuristic as well as static exchange evaluation are used to order moves. Evaluation covers material, mobility, various pawn structure features, and king safety through square control. Dolphin played the IOCSC 2010, and the DOCCC 2010 operated by Tessa Pijl.

		Elephant, a WinBoard compatible chess engine written by Harald Lüßen in C++, first released in March 2004 ^[1] . The name was chosen due to the connection with pieces in Chaturanga, Chinese Chess and chess, such as rook and bishop ^[2] , because elephants are known to be intelligent, and further due its author's weight ^[3] .

Description

Elephant applies PVS alpha-beta with transposition table, quiescence, adaptive null move pruning, IID, razoring, futility pruning and various extensions, embedded inside an fractional ply iterative deepening framework. Move ordering at the root is based on node count, and otherwise considers hash move including principle variation, static exchange evaluation, killer- and history heuristic. Evaluation might be lazy and takes material, cached pawn structure, king safety, piece-squares tables, mobility and multiple other terms into account. Elephant was used as testbed to compare various bitboard techniques in generating sliding piece attacks ^[6], in particular Exploding- and Sherwin Bitboards.

		Ferret , a chess engine by Bruce Moreland. Ferret won the Amateur World Microcomputer Chess Champion Title in Paderborn 1995 and was two times winner of the World Microcomputer Speed-Chess Champion, in Jakarta 1996 and Paris 1997. Ferret became second at the 14th World Microcomputer Chess Championship, Jakarta 1996 without losing a game. At the 9th World Computer Chess Championship, Paderborn 1999, Ferret was unlucky in not winning a dramatical playoff against Shredder.

Description of Ferret from Bruce Moreland's site ^[5] :

Ferret is a "normal" chess program. By that I mean that it uses alpha-beta full-width search, a quiescent search, a transposition hash table, an evaluation function that is called at the tips, and so forth. It uses null-move forward pruning, and for that I am indebted to Chrilly Donninger, who did not invent this technique, but he made it accessible to the amateur community via an ICCA Journal article (Vol. 16 #3, September 1993).

The program uses numerous common extensions such as check extension, recapture extension, and single-response to check. It also uses a sort of singular-extension that is loosely based upon the extension of this name that appears in Deep Thought and presumably Deep Blue. The evaluation function is designed to catch common features without being slow, but it's slow enough that the program isn't particularly fast.

The program uses endgame databases of my own design and construction, but which aren't any better than the Nalimov, Edwards, or Thompson endgame databases. I wrote my own because I didn't want to take advantage of code written by others, since I felt that the program would be less mine if I did so. The program has a series of special case low-material evaluation functions that it uses when endgame databases are not present, and in some cases when they are. The program is written 100% in C, and is portable to any platform that runs any Windows-based operating system, including multiprocessor machines.

Ferret is a "normal" brute-force program that runs under Windows NT. Techniques and tools used by the program include alpha-beta pruning, selective search extensions, quiescence search limited by a static exchange evaluator, null-move forward pruning, a 50,000-positions opening book, several hash tables and a few simple endgame databases. The program consists of about 20,000 lines of C code and has been compiled using Microsoft Visual C++ 2.0. Ferret searches approximately 18,000-32,000 nodes per second on a Pentium 66. It was written during off-hours over a period of about 4 years, for fun. Ferret finished fifth in Don Beal's uniform platform tournament last September. It has also played several hundred games of blitz chess on the Internet Chess Server, where it has been shown to be competitive among strong human players and various commercial programs. Ferret is copyrighted but its author is not particularly secretive about the program as he feels indebted to the many people who have answered his own questions.

Ferret is a normal chess program. It uses null-move forward pruning and other standard techniques. It is a leaf-node evaluator, and searches 80- 350K nps (120K typical middlegame) on a Pentium Pro 200 mhz machine.

is not correct, neither was GNU Chess a program by Bruce Moreland, nor was Ferret a derivative of GNU Chess ^[9]:

The program is 100% original, although at the time I started I had access to the Gnuchess source code. That code was kind of messy and it was its messy state that inspired me to think that I could do better.

		Gerbil, an open source chess engine under the GNU General Public License ^[1], written by Bruce Moreland, written for educational purposes. It has a decent search (null move pruning, hash tables) but a rudimentary evaluation ^[2].

It is using 0x88 move generation. The function is something under 200 lines long, which seems big, but there are a lot of comments and there's some repeated code.
It is using vanilla windowed alpha-beta with no PVS or anything like that, and I plan to keep it this way, since that is clear and performs acceptably.
It has a check extension. I think that is enough for now. I may try to do some pruning in the quiescence search, which uses MVV/LVA. I don't plan to write a static exchange evaluator.
This is already a more or less fully functional winboard engine, an effort that consumed a whole bunch of time, not that Mann's standard is hard to write to. I just had to spend a lot of time messing with threads.

		Gibbon, an UCI compliant open source chess engine by Eric Marathée written in C++. Gibbon originated from Small-C in 2005, playing Massy 2006 and improving since then. While featuring some bitboards, it has no annoying magic bitboard stuff, and is a counter approach of a Fruit like programming style, full of gotos, and difficult to follow control flow due to indent style and preprocessor switches for conditional compilation. Gibbon computes a few nodes, but is an attempt to compute the right ones ^[1].

		Giraffe, an experimental open source chess engine by Matthew Lai under the GNU General Public License, compliant to the Chess Engine Communication Protocol, written in C++11 and based on deep learning, which is topic of his Master's thesis in August 2015 ^[1] ^[2] . Giraffe uses the Eigen linear algebra library ^[3] , and Pradyumna Kannan's magic move generator ^[4] ^[5]. As employee of Google DeepMind, Matthew Lai announced the discontinuation of the Giraffe project in January 2016 ^[6].

Description

Giraffe's evaluation function is a deep neural network trained by TDLeaf ^[8] . Its feature representation includes a map of static exchange evaluations for all squares and sides ^[9] , a structure already proposed by Russell M. Church and Kenneth W. Church in Plans, Goals, and Search Strategies for the Selection of a Move in Chess ^[10] . Probability-based evaluation scores are not in centipawns nor linear to material , and span a +-10,000 range, with mate scores of +- 30,000. The search recently changed from traditional depth-based iterative deepening to assigning number of nodes (or time) to child nodes ^[11] . Node budget allocation will also become neural network based.

		GopherCheck, an UCI compliant open source chess engine by Stephen Lovell, written in the Go programming language, first released in June 2016 ^[1] available under the MIT license. GopherCheck supports a parallel search, defaulting to one search process (goroutine) ^[2] per logical core. GopherCheck is bitboard based and determines sliding piece attacks with magic bitboards with plain, homogenous arrays, which performed better than the common fancy implementations whith individual table sizes, thus less memory but variable shift while calculating the index ^[3].

		Hamsters, an UCI compliant multi-hamster chess engine by Alessandro Scotti with the goal of a program that has a full-featured and correct implementation of the UCI protocol, and that is able to play standard chess as well as Chess960. It applies a parallel search utilizing up to 8 threads. Binaries are available for Windows and Mac OS X ^[1]. Hamsters played the CIPS 2007, and was runner-up behind Delfi at the CCC 2008.
