		Boris, an early dedicated chess computer, which appeared in February 1978, designed and manufactured by Applied Concepts ^[1] and marketed by primary distributor Chafitz. Already in March 1978, Boris played Second West Coast Computer Faire Microcomputer Chess Tournament in the "microcomputers with less than 8K of memory class" ^[2]. The name was likely in dependence on the given name of Boris Spassky, who lost the Chess World Championship 1972 from Bobby Fischer in Reykjavik. Boris ran on a Fairchild F8 8-bit microprocessor with only 2.5 KiB ROM and 256 byte RAM. David Lindsay was hired to program the machine ^[3], and two further Boris models with Lindsay programs appeared in 1979, the first travel chess computer Boris Diplomat ^[4] ^[5], where Lindsay holds a patent ^[6] on the Chess piece font ^[7], and the Boris Master ^[8].

Just to rewind a bit, one evening when I was home having dinner, I got a call from Bobby Fischer. He was excited about our electronic chess game "Boris" and I realized that if he was interested in our electronic chess game that there was a major market out there. We increased our development of electronic games and yes, we hired the brightest and the best programmers in the country to develop programs for our games.

Co-Author

The ICGA site mentions Rex Kent as author of Boris Experimental which played the 1st World Microcomputer Chess Championship 1980 in London ^[13]. However, Boris X was already the work of Kathe and Dan Spracklen, and additionally with modifications by John Aker and Terry Fredrick. Rex Kent operated Boris at the PCW-MCC 1978 ^[14]. It is a bit unclear whether Kent was operator or co- or book-author of the early Boris otherwise credited to David Lindsay.

Boris 2.5

In 1979, following the development of the original Boris when more advanced programs were required, Arleen and Steve Chafitz contracted Kathe and Dan Spracklen to be their chess programmers for their Chafitz modular game system as well the Applied Concepts Great Game Machine ^[15]. Their Sargon 2.5 program appeared as Chafitz Sargon 2.5 MGS module ^[16], and in 1980, as Chafitz ARB Sargon 2.5 ^[17], also called Boris Sargon 2.5 ^[18] or simply dubbed Boris 2.5. John Aker and Terry Fredrick, affiliated with Applied Concepts, were involved in improving the Sargon and Boris program ^[19].

Boris Handroid

		Boris Handroid was the first but very rare electronic chess robot from 1980 ^[20], with 64 Hall effect sensors to recognize pieces, and three servomechanisms to control the cartesian robotic arm. The Handroid program, adapted by Terry Fredrick ^[21] was also based on Sargon 2.5 by Kathe and Dan Spracklen.

Boris Experimental

Boris Experimental (Boris X) was the further development of the Boris 2.5 aka Sargon 2.5 program, but no longer by the Spracklens, who after their experience no longer worked for Chafitz, but for Samole's Fidelity Electronics. John Aker continued the job.

WMCCC 1980

The Sargon based Boris Experimental played the 1st World Microcomputer Chess Championship, September 4-9, 1980, in London, where it only lost versus later champion and Sargon based Challenger X, blundering an endgame a piece up ^[23], and became second with 4 out of 5!

Controversy

ACM 1980

Boris X was also registered for the ACM 1980. A brief description is given in the tournament booklet with Applied Concepts CEO Alan Mead as representative ^[24] :

BORIS EXPERIMENTAL, Alan Mead, Applied Concepts, Garland, Texas

The program uses alpha-beta pruning with recently developed and improved search heuristics. The program runs in 8k of program space and has nine levels of play including two tournament levels. The tournament level play is expected to be 100 points stronger than the present BORIS 2.5 program.

But Boris X, despite registered, finally did not play the ACM 1980. Kathe Spracklen had filed a protest, claiming Boris X is too similar to Sargon 2.5, and requested mutual comparison of the source code. After John Aker admitted that Boris X was a revamped Sargon 2.5, Boris was rejected ^[25] ^[26].

ACM 1981

At the 12th ACM 1981, Boris X was mentioned in the booklet again, now with a long list of its authors and Applied Concepts representatives ^[27], but again, did not participate, likely also because David Slate was already competing with Nuchess:

		Kasparov Sparc (Saitek Sparc), a chess computer module by Saitek, with a SPARC processor, and a program by Kathe and Dan Spracklen, dedicated for the SciSys/Saitek module system Saitek Renaissance. A first version of the program played the WMCCC 1991 in Vancouver as Saitek-X, 5th with 4½/7. The loss versus Ed Schröder's ChessMachine Gideon at the WCCC 1992 in Madrid almost ended their involvement in computer chess when they didn't win that world title. Despite, Kasparov Sparc participated a last time at the WMCCC 1993 in Munich operated by Günter Niggemann. Unfortunately, Sparc suffered from hardware problems and finally a broken interface card in the last round ^[1] .

When Sid Samole was ready to retire, he sold Fidelity. And he sold it to a German chess manufacturer who had, at the time, the then world champion program. Our program had slipped into second place and so ... And that company had bought Fidelity and so we're saying, well, they've got the world champion program and we're number two. What's our future? They're a German company and we're in California, you know, where are things going? And, at the same time, we were approached by... Eric Winkler.

And he asked us if we would come to work for him and create a chess program for him. And we did work for three years for Saitek and Eric Winkler had a dream of creating a chess program using the Sparc processor, a risc-based processor. And we did do that. We created it. We got Sparc workstations and we coded an entire chess engine in Sparc Assembly language.

Well, Saitek hoped to win a world championship and recapture the Royal Championship title and we took a program that almost won. We came very close to winning but... Yeah. We lost the final round... And did not win and so, at that point in time, Saitek said, "Oh, well, that was a good try. Good bye."

		Mephisto Almeria, a set of dedicated chess computer modules by Hegener & Glaser released in 1988 for their Mephisto module systems. As further development of Richard Lang's Mephisto series and successor of Mephisto Roma, Mephisto Almeria won the fourth consecutive title for Richard Lang in charge of Mephisto - at the WMCCC 1988 in Almería, Spain, which were infact three separate titles, the World Micro Software Champion of fthe Software Group, where an experimental Almeria program played ^[1], the World Micro Manufacturers (Team) Champion of the Manufacturers Group, which was a duel of four Mephistos versus four Fidelitys including a multi-processor machine, and the Single-CPU World Microcomputer Chess Champion of the Commercial Group, with three programs competing. Short after, the tournament machine played the ACM 1988 as Mephisto X and became third with 2½/4 only losing from winner Deep Thought, a draw versus Cray Blitz, and wins versus AI Chess and Sun Phoenix. Almeria further won the First International Chess-Computer Tournament in the USSR 1989 in Moscow, and also played humans at Netherlands-vs-Computers-1989, the Aegon 1989, and the Aubervilliers Rapid Open 1989.

Improvements

Despite small improvements in various game phases due to a tweaked search and evaluation, and an enhanced 60,000 ply opening book with 7,000 variations, Mephisto Almeria was the first released Lang program using a transposition table, in total up to 1 MiB of RAM.

Three versions were built, a 68000 version, and beside the normal 68020, the limited edition Mephisto Almeria Tournament machines ^[3] .

		Mephisto Amsterdam, a dedicated chess computer module with a 68000 CPU at 12 MHz for Mephisto module systems by Hegener & Glaser with a Psion based program ^[1] by Richard Lang persistent in 64 KiB of ROM, using 16 KiB of RAM. At the WMCCC 1985 in Amsterdam, Richard Lang won his first of eight World Microcomputer Chess Championship titles under the Mephisto brand. Mephisto Amsterdam I, running on a 32-bit 68020 workstation was ahead of Mephisto Amsterdam II and III, already running on 68000 module prototypes.

		Mephisto Dallas, a dedicated chess computer module by Hegener & Glaser released in late 1986 for their Mephisto module systems. Mephisto Dallas was Richard Lang's further development of the Mephisto Amsterdam, the winner of the previuos year's WMCCC, still persistant inside a 64 KiB ROM but using 64 KiB of RAM. Improvements were mentioned in evaluation and search, combining enhanced tactical skills with a strategic grasp of pawn stucture, weak pawns, advanced passed pawns, minority attack and king safety ^[1].

68020 vs 68000

Dallas was Lang's second coup with Mephisto, like its competitors with three incarnations playing at the WMCCC 1986 in Dallas - all three on a 68020 processor at 30 MHz ^[3] - Mephisto 3 won the title with 6/7, only losing the last round vs. Rebel aka Recom Deventer A. Another 68020 Mephisto also played in the evening at the simultaneous scheduled ACM 1986 only a foot walk far away ^[4]. Opposed to the Amsterdam, where a 68020 version which actually won the title was not sold, but only a 68000 module with World Champ button, the Dallas 68020 version was released with a 14 MHz 32-bit CPU, beside the cheaper 12 MHz 68000 module with only 16 Kib of RAM, both with the same World Champ 1986 button. However, at Aegon 1987 Mephisto Dallas 68000 became best computer - 3rd with 4½/6, followed by Mephisto Dallas 68020, 4th with 4/6 .

		Mephisto Genius 68030, a set of dedicated chess computer modules bys Hegener & Glaser for their Mephisto module systems running the Mephisto Genius 2 program by Richard Lang on a 68030 32-bit processor at 33 MHz. It was the improved Mephisto Vancouver program and the Motorola assembly branch of the 80486 program which won the manufacturers and Absolute World Microcomputer Chess Champion titles at the WMCCC 1993 running on the PC based Mephisto Wundermaschine. Mephisto Genius 68030 was persistent inside a 256 KiB EPROM, and used 512 from 768 KiB of RAM for the transposition table.

Mephisto London

A software update was available as Mephisto London also for older modules in 1994 ^[2], incorporating improvements of the Genius 3 program which played the Intel Grand Prix in London, winning speed chess matches versus Garry Kasparov and Predrag Nikolić. A few Genius 68030 London tournament machines inside the Bavaria board were shipped during the mid 90s ^[3]

		Mephisto Lyon, a set of dedicated chess computer modules by Hegener & Glaser for their Mephisto module systems with a program by Richard Lang, the successor of Mephisto Portorose. After Lang's sixth consecutive World Microcomputer Chess Championship title as member of the Mephisto team at the WMCCC 1990 in Lyon, the modules were released in late 1990. Notable was the draw by reputation versus runner-up Échec 1.9. Already earlier in November 1990, the Lyon had its debut at ACM 1990, becoming co-champion shared with Deep Thought. It further played the Harvard Cup 1991 with less success, and the Aegon 1991.

Improvements

Improvements of the Mephisto Lyon over the Portorose were due to an enhanced selective search with narrower but deeper search trees, the application of singular extensions, and capture extensions if entering the pawn endgame. Further, Mephisto Lyon has more knowledge to distinguish strong versus weak passed pawns, and the opening book was further extended to more than 100,000 moves within 13,000 variations ^[2].

Three Lyon versions were shipped - with 68000 and 68020 processor, and the limited edition Mephisto Lyon Tournament machines with 68030 processor.

Mephisto MM II,
a dedicated chess computer module for Mephisto module systems by Hegener & Glaser launched in 1985 with a Plymate based program by Ulf Rathsman. The Mephisto MM II ran on a 65C02 CPU at 3.7 MHz inside a 32 KiB ROM using 4 KiB of RAM ^[1]. Based on the MM II, the Mephisto B&P (Blitz- and Problemsolving) appeared in the same year ^[2].

Mephisto MM IV,
a dedicated chess computer module for Mephisto module systems by Hegener & Glaser launched in 1987. Ed Schröder's program run on a 65C02 CMOS processor. The MM IV played the First International Chess-Computer Tournament in the USSR 1989, and was runner-up, only losing from its stable mate Mephisto Almeria with a Lang program and a much more powerful 68020 32-bit processor ^[1].

		Mephisto MM V, a dedicated chess computer module for Mephisto module systems by Hegener & Glaser launched in 1990 as successor of the Mephisto MM IV with the same hardware. Ed Schröder's Rebel program ran on a 65C02 CMOS processor in 32 KiB ROM with 8 KiB RAM at 5 MHz, but gained 70 Elo over its predecessor and was tactically much stronger since it could solve deep combinations, while only doing 500-600 nodes per second ^[1], due to searching all check giving moves in the first at least two plies of the quiescence search, and even deeper if check evasion had only one or two legal moves ^[2].

Mephisto Polgar,
a dedicated chess computer module for Mephisto module systems by Hegener & Glaser launched in 1989. The Rebel based 8-bit program by Ed Schröder run on a 65C02 CMOS processor. The same program appeared in the Mephisto Academy, a computer with focus on didactics and teaching chess, also dedicated to the Polgar sisters Susan, Sofia and Judit.

		Mephisto Portorose, a set of dedicated chess computer modules by Hegener & Glaser for their Mephisto module systems with a program by Richard Lang as successor of Mephisto Almeria. After Lang's fifth consecutive World Microcomputer Chess Championship title as member of the Mephisto team at the WMCCC 1989 in Portorož (Italian: Portorose, literally "Port of Roses"), the modules were released in 1989 in three versions. At the WMCCC, Mephisto Portorose was unchallenged in the Manufacturers group, and Mephisto X won in the Software group, assigning the World Micro Absolute Champion title to Mephisto Portorose, claimed to be identical with Mephisto X. Mephisto X aka Portorose also played the ACM 1989 in Reno some weeks later, where it upset Cray Blitz and Deep Thought, becoming third. Mephisto Portorose further played the First Harvard Cup 1989 and the Aegon 1990 where it won from David Bronstein. In April 1990 Mephisto Portorose won versus Anatoly Karpov during a simultaneous exhibition at the SKA-Mephisto-Tournament in Munich ^[1] .

Improvements

Improvements were mentioned in various game phases due to faster and deeper selective search and tweaked evaluation, and an enhanced 80,000 ply opening book with 10,000 variations.

Versions

Three Portorose versions were shipped - with 68000 and 68020 processor, and the limited edition Mephisto Portorose Tournament machines with 68030 processor.

		Mephisto Rebell 5.0, a dedicated chess computer module for Mephisto module systems by Hegener & Glaser launched in 1986 short after Rebel's strong WCCC 1986 in Cologne. Ed Schröder's first dedicated computer program ran on a 65C02 CMOS processor. It was superseded during the following years by Mephisto MM IV, Mephisto MM V and various other models and modules, such as the Mephisto Polgar all with the approved 8-bit technology.

Mephisto RISC,
a dedicated chess computer module for Mephisto Module Systems by Hegener & Glaser, first launched in 1991. Produced by TASC, and similar to the ChessMachine, it used an ARM2 RISC processor to run the Gideon based program of Ed Schröder's Rebel family, which won the WMCCC 1991 in Vancouver. The RISC 2 Modul launched in 1994, was updated with Gideon 3.1 of the ChessMachine, which won the WCCC 1992 in Madrid.

		Mephisto Roma, a set of dedicated chess computer modules by Hegener & Glaser released in 1987 for their Mephisto module systems, like its predecessor Mephisto Dallas as 68000 and 68020 versions @ 12 and 14 MHz with 16 and 64 KiB of RAM respectively. Thus, the program was the further development of Richard Lang's Mephisto series, winning the third consecutive title at the WMCCC 1987 in Rome (Roma in Italian), again the site eponym of the computer modules. The Manufacturers Championship was a duel between Hegener & Glaser and Newcrest Technology, where three Mephisto Roma on 68020 @ 25 or 28 MHz ^[1] outclassed three CXG Sphinx with a Intelligent Software program by David Levy and Mark Taylor, running on a 68020 as well, with a stunning 9:0 result - while the games were more closely than the results suggested ^[2]. The cheaper Roma II 68000 module was released two years later.

Features

Kaare Danielsen praised Lang's programs in general in his ICCA Journal report of the Rome WMCCC, where Psion, still Lang's development base for his Mephisto programs, also won the Software group ^[4]:

Clearly, Richard Lang has produced the strongest microcomputer program in the world. It searches 4-5 plies brute force plus up to 6-7 plies selective search. The program contains a lot of chess knowledge, which is used both in the tree and to create piece-value-tables. The chess knowledge was obtained from chess masters, who analyzed games played by the program. The program has an asymmetric evaluation function, which emphasis safety (has rules like 'do not start a wild attack, but worry a lot if the opponent does so'). The program searches about 4000 nodes per second on a 28 MHz 68020, but this includes a thorough analysis at every node, including a swap-off evaluation (static analysis of captures instead of a capture search).

Improvements

Monsieur Plastique recalled the original Mephisto Dallas to Roma evolution was considered to be an extremely small one ^[5]. Improvements of middlegame and endgame and Blitzchess mentioned in the introduction of the Roma manual ^[6] look like a plain translation from the German Dallas manual ^[7].

		Mephisto Vancouver, a set of dedicated chess computer modules by Hegener & Glaser for their Mephisto module systems with a program by Richard Lang, the successor of Mephisto Lyon on the way from Psion to Chess Genius collecting World Microcomputer Chess Championship titles. The seventh title of Richard Lang under the aegis of Mephisto or vice versa at the WMCCC 1991 in Vancouver in the Manufacturers group was per default, since there were no other competitors. In the Software group, Mephisto X aka Vancouver only became third. For a long time, since the WMCCC 1983, nor Lang or Mephisto program won the microcomputer title in the software or commercial group - it was Ed Schröder's Gideon on an ARM2 plugin card, followed by Marty Hirsch's MChess on a PC, heralding an end of an era.

Improvements

Improvements of the Mephisto Vancouver over the Lyon after only five months between the WMCCC 1990 and 1991, was due to tweaked evaluation with enhanced pawn structure knowledge and center control considerations, Vancouver will also recognize more lost pawn engings statically. The opening book was extended to 150,000 moves in 17,000 variations. The program has many options supported by the revised user interface dialogue system, to configure search and evaluation parameters, such as selectivity, relative point values and contempt factor ^[2].

Like with previous models, three Vancouver versions were shipped - with 68000 and 68020 processor, and the Mephisto Vancouver Tournament machines with 68030 processor ^[3].

The program, written in 6502 assembly is derived from Boris Experimental, which on the other hand was a continued development of the Boris 2.5 aka Sargon 2.5 program by Kathe and Dan Spracklen ^[2] . Morphy appeared in 1981, and was intended to play the middlegame, in conjunction with the during game play exchangeable Gruenfeld and Capablanca cartridges. The trio played the commercial section of the WMCCC 1981, as well the open section as Applied Concepts X, both finishing last ^[3]. The Applied Concepts personal withdrew both entries after some rounds, due to a bug in the Capablanca module ^[4].

Gruenfeld

		The Gruenfeld Edition (1981/1982) was a chess opening module for the Great Game Machine, Chafitz Modular Game System and compatibles. It contained an opening book by chess master John Jacobs ^[7] and a control program by David Slate and Larry Atkin ^[8]. The Gruenfield opening cartridge was made available in June 1981, and covers openings up to move 20. When the book is exhausted, the system gives a signal, to remove and replace it with Morphy ^[9].
Ernst Grünfeld ^[10]

Capablanca

		The Capablanca Edition (1981/1982) was an endgame module for the Great Game Machine and the Chafitz Modular Game System, programmed by David Slate and Larry Atkin. The Capablanca module was part of the trio around the Morphy program ^[11]. The endgame starts when the material count is less than about 25, counting a queen as 9, a rook as 5, and so on. When this point has been reached, Morphy also gives a signal. Morphy can continue switching in extra end-game routines, or alternatively, Morphy can be taken out and the Capablanca cartridge inserted for a powerful finish. Capablanca has been available since October 1981 ^[12]. Capablanca was later converted to become the Steinitz module for Great Game Machine, and Chess 7.0 for the Apple II, Atari 800, and Commodore 64. Even later it became "How About a Nice Game of Chess" for the Apple IIe ^[13].

		Plymate, a series of chess programs by Ulf Rathsman and Lars Hjörth written in Assembly to run on 6502 based dedicated chess computers with up to 8 MHz. Plymate was commercially marketed as cartridge for Conchess computers ^[1], competing the WCCC 1986 in Cologne, and three micro events, the WMCCC 1985, WMCCC 1987 and the commercial group of the WMCCC 1988. The Plymate program was further incorporated inside the Mephisto MM II by Hegener & Glaser ^[2].

		Princhess, a chess program by Ulf Rathsman written in 6502 Assembly for the Commodore 64. Princhess played four World Microcomputer Chess Championships, the WMCCC 1980 in London, the WMCCC 1981 in Travemünde, becoming runner up, the WMCCC 1984 in Glasgow, where Princhess became tied champion, and the WMCCC 1985 in Amsterdam with a fourth place behind three Mephistos. After the success of Princhess in Travemünde, Rathsman became professional chess programmer and Princhess was incorporated into the dedicated Conchess computers ^[1] ^[2] .

Saitek Brute Force, (Kasparov Brute Force)
a chess computer module by Saitek dedicated for the module systems SciSys Leonardo, Saitek Galileo, and Saitek Renaissance. While the module was early announced with a program by Ulf Rathsman ^[1], it was finally released in 1992 with a program by Frans Morsch running on a 10 MHz H8 processor. Opposed to the later GK 2100 with only 1 KiB of RAM but same processor and also 32 KiB of ROM, the Brute Force had 257 KiB of RAM, 256 used for the transposition tables ^[2]. Brute Force played four Aegon Tournaments, Aegon 1993, Aegon 1994, Aegon 1995 and Aegon 1996.
