		Alaric, (TerraPi) a WinBoard and UCI compliant chess engine written by Peter Fendrich in C++. It uses both bitboards and other structures to represent the board and to generate moves, and further utilizes transposition table, pawn hash table, history tables, and two killer slots per ply. Inside its principal variation search with null move pruning, a precise prediction of node types takes place in order to guide the search ^[1].

Etymology

The chess engine Alaric is named after Alaric I (around 370 – 410 AD), King of the Visigoths from 395, who managed to walk with his forces right through the Roman empire, invaded Italy and sacked Rome in 410. Before that in the year 394 he served as a leader of Germanic troops under Roman command of Theodosius I but wasn't happy with how the Goths were treated ^[3].

Tournament Play

Alaric played the CCT9 with a result of 3½/7, and, under the handle TerraPi, a successful WCRCC 2007, becoming 6th with 8½/14 ^[4]. One year later, at the WCRCC 2008, Alaric even became 4th with 9½/14 ^[5]. Alaric's opening book was cooked by Günther Simon ^[6].

அரசன்		Arasan, an open source engine written by Jon Dart in C++. Arasan's development started in the early 90s, the first version, released in 1994 was a 16-bit program running under Windows 3.1 using an 8x8 Board, incremental updated attack tables and its own GUI, evolving to a portable 32-bit and later 64-bit program, utilizing bitboards to determine its sliding piece attacks with rotated bitboard lookups. In 2008, rotated were replaced by Magic bitboards, which gave Arasan about a 20-25% speedup ^[1]. Despite its own GUI, Arasan early supported the Chess Engine Communication Protocol and later UCI as well, to run under Windows, Linux and Mac OS ^[2]. The latest version of Arasan and all major versions, including Version 1.0 from March 1994, are available as source code from the Arasan.org site ^[3] . Jon's change logs, bug fix reports and tournament reports over the time are available from forum archives, as well the recent ones from the Arasan blog ^[4]

Bitboard Trials

Lately I've been working on a new major release of Arasan. I have spent the last few months working on the search engine, trying to improve speed and performance. I tried some experiments with a bitboard move representation, but I have backed off on that for now.

With bitboards, I got a nice reduction in tree size (bitboards allow a more accurate swap-down analysis than I had before, and this improves move ordering and allows better "culling" of losing captures in the quiescence search).

However, currently the program relies pretty heavily on incrementally generated attack information, and I didn't have that implemented to work with bitboards, so I had to compute attacks as needed. Unfortunately, the current program "needs" to do this much more often than Crafty does, so the loss from computing attacks more than balanced out the gains from bitboards. This is fixable, I'm sure, but I've put off further work on it for now.

Magic Bitboards

The main change has been to re-work the code to use "magic" bitboard logic instead of rotated bitboards. This has given about a 20-25% speedup. I have also had to re-write the evaluation function to take advantage of bitboard attack functions for king safety and mobility.

PEXT/PDEP Bitboards

Arasan 20.3, released in November 2017, performs PEXT/PDEP Bitboards if compiled for the BMI2 instruction set ^[9] to replace Fancy Magic Bitboards in looking up sliding piece attacks ^[10]

Automated Tuning

Arasan 19.2, released in November 2016, now applies Texel's Tuning Method by default and supports the Adam gradient descent algorithm ^[11] ^[12].

Tournament Play

Arasan went online in December, 1996 ^[13] , and played almost all major online computer chess tournaments, such as CCT Tournaments, ACCA Americas' Computer Chess Championship, ACCA World Computer Rapid Chess Championship, TCEC, and International Gsei Web Tournaments. Arasan 15.1 ^[14] won the ACCA 2012 ^[15] , Arasan 16.0 the WCRCC 2013 ^[16] . Over the board, Arasan is active at the CSVN Programmers Tournaments operated by Tessa Pijl. Arasan was runner-up behind The Baron in May 2014 at the PT 46 one point behind, as well in June 2015 at the PT 48 with the same score according to the tiebreak rules ^[17].

		Barbarossa, an UCI compliant open source chess engine by Nicu Ionita, first released in Fall 2013 as successor of Abulafia ^[1] , both written in Haskell ^[2] ^[3] . It uses bitboards to represent the board, and magic bitboards ^[4] to determine sliding piece attacks. Barbarossa applies an alpha-beta search ^[5] utilizing a transposition table indexed by Zobrist keys, and uses the functional programming concept of monad transformers ^[6] ^[7] in continuation passing style to control the search. Some evaluation parameters were tuned by Rémi Coulom's CLOP, and more recently by MMTO as introduced by Kunihito Hoki and Tomoyuki Kaneko in the domain of Shogi ^[8] ^[9] .

		Betsabe II, (Betsabe, Betsabé II) a Chess Engine Communication Protocol compliant open source chess engine under the GPL written by Juan Benitez in C, able to run under Windows, Linux, Mac OS and Android platforms. Betsabe II is successor of Betsabe, which already played various Spanish Computer Chess Championships in the 90s, notably the SCCC 1993 where it became first Spanish Champion with a 100% score, and the SCCC 1994 as runner-up behind Zeus II. Betsabe was initially based on Dieter Steinwender and Chrilly Donninger's program Minimax ^[1], but differences in search and evaluation are substantial.

Search

Betsabe II applies PVS with transposition table inside an iterative deepening fractional ply framework in conjunction with mate distance pruning, IID, adaptive null move pruning, LMR, razoring, futility pruning, SEE pruning in quiescence, and check- and capture extensions with transitions to pawn endings. Move ordering is enhanced by history- and killer heuristic with two ordinary killer moves and one mate killer per ply.

Evaluation

The evaluation might be lazy using material and piece-square tables with respect to bounds, and otherwise considers mobility, pawn structure, king safety and various piece terms.

		Bismark, an UCI compliant open source chess engine written by Evgeny Shtranvasser in C++, recent version hosted by Bitbucket ^[1]. Bismark's board is represented as two-dimensional 8x8 array of squares and a vector of pieces. The engine applies negamax alpha-beta PVS with null move pruning, transposition table and a pure capture quiescence search within the iterative deepening loop. Beside material as dominating term, Bismark's evaluation aggregates values of middlegame and endgame piece-square tables along with king tropism, finally tapered by current game phase using float arithmetic. Further, Bismark considers various pawn structure terms, with appropriate bonuses for passers and candidates and penalties for doubled pawns and islands, as well as beneficial piece positions such as knight outposts, rook on open or semi-open file and bishop pair ^[2].

		Cheops, (CHEOPS, CHEss OPponent Simulator, Χέοψ) a didactic open source chess program written by Tristan Miller in C++, licensed under the GNU GPL, first released in 1999, version 1.0 in 2003, and version 1.2 in February 2015 ^[1]. The program uses a command line interface to interact with the user, and prints simple text diagrams to display the current position during game play. Moves are printed and entered in pure algebraic coordinate notation. Daniel José Queraltó has produced a build of CHEOPS 1.2 for Microsoft Windows. Michael Yee has produced an UCI compliant build of CHEOPS 1.1 ^[2] ^[3].

Description

Cheops uses a 64-square linear array board representation and performs a legal move generation anti-pattern by looking for from-squares of own pieces traversing the board in spiral order from center to h1-edge, keeping, returning and splicing ^[5] std::list as local move list variables on the stack. The tree search is fixed depth alpha–beta without quiescence search. The static evaluation function considers material, mobility, center proximity, king piece tropism, and a few pawn structure terms such as isolated, doubled and backward pawns ^[6].

		Duchess, a chess program running on an IBM 370/168 ^[1] under the MVS operating system, developed by three graduate students at the Duke University in the 70s, Eric Jensen, Tom Truscott and Bruce Wright, written in PL/I and Assembly ^[2]. Duchess was one of the strongest programs of its time. In 1977, it was runner up at the Second World Computer Chess Championship in Toronto, behind Chess 4.6 winning from Kaissa ^[3], and tied first with Chess 4.6 at the Eighth North American Computer-Chess Championship, runner up due to tie breaking points. Duchess won the Jerusalem CC Tournament 1978 due it's victory versus Chess 4.6. At the Third World Computer Chess Championship in Linz 1980, Duchess became third only losing from Belle. Duchess played seven ACM North American Computer Chess Championships from 1974 to 1981.

Description

Duchess is written in IBM 370 assembly language ^[8], applied iterative deepening, and searched about 200,000 nodes per three minute move. A book of 3,000 positions helped with the openings ^[9] .

He (Truscott) and Wright created their program for an IBM System 370 Model 165 MVT/TSO mainframe computer system at Duke. It had three megabytes of main memory, which Truscott notes was later upgraded to "4 megabytes for a mere $100,000." That was, according to Truscott, "Pretty much the top of the line at the time. We did our development in batch mode," he remembers, "The source code was on punched cards and the compiled code was stored on disk." And in tournaments, he and Wright used the IBM time-sharing mode TSO. The first computer chess tournament Truscott and Wright competed in was the North American Chess Championships held at the ACM Annual Conference in San Diego, California in November 1974. By then, Truscott was in his senior year at Duke. He and Wright named their chess program Duchess.

		Kempelen, a chess program written by Attila Kovács for 6502 and later 68000 based home computers, like Commodore 64, Commodore 128 and Atari ST. The commercial Commodore version by Andromeda Software Inc. ^[1], market in 1986 by Sierra On-Line was co-authored by Grandmaster István Bilek and Tamás Révkirá ^[2]. Kempelen played four World Microcomputer Chess Championships in the 80s, the WMCCC 1985, WMCCC 1986, WMCCC 1988 and WMCCC 1989. The program's name was in remembrance of the Hungarian inventor Wolfgang von Kempelen ^[3], in the late 18th century the constructor of The Turk, the chess-playing automaton later revealed to be a hoax.

		King of Kings, (KoK) a WinBoard compliant chess engine written by Koundinya Veluri in C++, first released in May 2001 ^[1]. King of Kings applies PVS with aspiration windows inside an iterative deepening framework with fractional ply increments ^[2]. Version 2.30 introduced PV extensions in 2003 ^[3], and in 2.50 depth reduction in null move pruning was increased from two to three plies, along with a more profound king safety routine in evaluation ^[4]. KoK uses two transposition tables supposable with different replacement schemes, size, and store and probe depth limits ^[5], and a separate pawn-king hash table ^[6]. Apparently, it uses biboards with a8 = 0, b8 = 1, h1 = 63 square mapping ^[7]. King of Kings played the CCT4 with 6/11 and the CCT6 with 6½/9 shared 4th - 6th along with Junior and Ruffian, behind Crafty, Hiarcs and Zappa.

Monarch's board is internally represented as an array (Version 1.0 used bitboards and a pre-generated move table), performs PVS with checks searched at the first ply of the quiescence, in conjunction with SEE, killer and history heuristic, null move pruning with R = 3, ETC and IID, and the evaluation is based on piece square tables ^[1] .

		Napoleon, an UCI compliant open source chess engine by Marco Pampaloni, written in C++, first released in September 2013 ^[1]. Napoleon had its over the board tournament debut in Turin 2014, where it quite successfully participated at the IGT 2014 becoming fourth with 4 out of 7.

		Nero, a chess program developed by Jari Huikari, written in Pascal and x86 inline assembly ^[1]. Initially a DOS program first released in 1998, it later evolved to a Winboard compatible engine. Nero performs alpha-beta inside an iterative deepening framework without a transposition table and a "real" quiescence search ^[2].

		Octavius, a chess engine by Luke Pellen relying purely on an evaluation based on a four-layer neural network without any material analysis, choosing the move with the best score on its single output neuron, performing a one ply look ahead. Despite Sebastian Thrun's remark, that using the raw board representation as input of a neural network is a poor choice ^[1], but quite similar to one input representation of the Neural MoveMap Heuristic by Levente Kocsis et al. ^[2], Octavius has an input layer of 768 (12x64) nodes, a sequence of 12 numbers (11 or 12 times 0.0, 1 or 0 times 1.0) for each square, where a 1.0 was given for the particular piece (if any) residing on that square. Two hidden layers with 1024 and 512 nodes are feed forward to one output node, which represents the score of the position for one side to move. In total, Octavius' net has 2305 nodes with 1,311,232 connections.
