		Anubis, a private WinBoard compliant chess engine by José Carlos Martínez Galán, its development started in 2003 as successor of Averno. Anubis is a bitboard engine, and in its first version generated sliding piece attacks using Kogge-Stone-like algorithms ^[1]. Completely re-written in 2012 ^[2], Anubis played some private tournaments by Sergio Martinez ^[3].

		Arthur, a Chess Engine Communication Protocol compatible, portable chess engine written by Walter Ravenek in the 90s, with an own graphical user interface for the Apple Macintosh computer. Arthur played various Dutch Open Computer Chess Championships with strong results, for instance becoming third at the DOCCC 1998 behind The King and CilkChess. It further played multiple Aegon Tournaments in the 90s, the IPCCC 1994, the WMCCC 1997 in Paris and the WCCC 1999 in Paderborn.

1997

Arthur is an amateur chess program that has been developed as a literate program, i.e., with description and source code integrated in a single document. The complete print-out is some 500 pages. The program uses conventional search techniques, with some specific extensions developed by the author. The program is knowledge intensive and plays mainly positional games. Arthur has been a regular guest in the AEGON Man vs. Machine tournaments and the Open Dutch Computer Chess Championships. Over the last three years it has finished between the top amateur programs.

1999

Arthur is a strong Dutch amateur program. It has finished as the best amateur program in the Open Dutch Computer Chess Championships for the last three years, performing reasonably well against commercial programs. The program consists of a platform independent chess engine, which is connected to a graphical user interface for the Macintosh. A WinBoard version will be available in the near future. Arthur is quite capable tactically, but it tends to play a positional game, when given the chance.

Atomystica,
a chess program which plays only the variant Atomic Chess ^[1], using the rules from FICS ^[2]. The development of the program started in April 2014. The program, written in Delphi, has its own GUI, but can also be operated via the Chess Engine Communication Protocol with WinBoard. But the Program do not support all functions of the protocol.

Description

The program uses piece-lists and a 10x12 board for the internal board representation. It applies alpha-beta inside an iterative deepening framework, further using the killer moves, relative history heuristic, null-move heuristic, transposition tables and some other ideas for move ordering. Under his name, the program plays on FICS with a rating from 2300 to 2400 points. On the server Atomystica uses an opening book with about 170,000 positions and some as many moves, separated in a white and a black book. The opening books were automatically generated out of the topgames played on FICS.

		Axon (Geniss Axon), a chess engine by primary author Vladan Vučković with chess knowledge and opening moves contributed by Đorđe Vidanović. Geniss Axon, a plain alpha-beta searcher whose development started in 2001, was written in compact 16-bit 8086 assembly, also incorporated into the Axon Benchmark program, which is available from the Arena site ^[1]. The benchmark indicates how well x86 processors will support Axon's 16-bit instructions.

Description

Axon used a 12x12 mailbox to represent the board, and applies a unique move repetition detection technique, as described by Vučković and Vidanović in 2004 ^[4]. Further developments were Axon I, the successor of Geniss Axon XP, first using null move pruning with R = 2, the 32-bit port Axon II utilizing 64-bit MMX extensions, and Axon 3 the serial program of the parallel chess system Achilles ^[5] ^[6]. In 2008, Vučković introduced the Compact Chessboard Representation as used in Axon ^[7] ^[8].

		BB, Christophe Jolly's first chess program running under MS-DOS on a x86 PC. BB participated at the WMCCC 1990 in Lyon, and the WMCCC 1993 in Munich, and is forerunner of Christophe's later program Techno Chess aka KnightX. Whether the program's name refers to its internal board representation, for instance as acronym for Bitboards, or the hexadecimal number 0xBB, decimal 187 and sum of three or nine consecutive prime numbers, and product of two primes as well, for a 17x11 vector attacks approach, to Bébé or something else, is not known so far by the editor.

BBchess,
a chess program by Bernard Brioit. The engine part is written in Pascal, its own GUI in Delphi. BBchess uses the 0x88 Board representation and performs an improved MTD(f) search on top of iterative deepening and applies Null move pruning with a depth reduction of 3. It uses two transposition tables, and supports the Thompson endgame databases with three and four pieces ^[1].

Chepla,
a private WinBoard ^[1] chess engine by Mikael Bäckman, apparently a plain fail-soft alpha-beta searcher ^[2] with impressive search depths and nodes per second, while the former was caused by not using recapture extensions and using late move pruning ^[3]. Chepla's evaluation is fast and simple, uses lazy evaluation and an evaluation cache otherwise ^[4]. Chepla played the CCT6, CCT7 and CCT8 tournaments.

Chess Wizard is a highly selective program, with a lot of knowledge in the eval function. It uses the bitmap approach, like Crafty and Chess Guru. However, it is very speculative in its evaluation and has a lot of special algorithms regarding space control.

It is quite slow compared to a lot of other programs (6000-10000 n/s on Pentium Pro 200), but I think it is not too "stupid" (that is, for a chess program :) Chess Wizard is two years old now, but the French Championship was his first official tournament.

Wizard uses different extensions at different time controls, and his eval parameters change also with the time control (more agressive in sudden death). It uses an alpha-beta, and heavily prune forward by evaluating the position at each node in the tree.

Since Wizard plays reasonably well positionnally, I will concentrate on its tactical abilities for a few months. I was wondering what recapture extensions is considered to be optimal by other programmers. This problem is not simple at all. I am considering for now recapture extensions of equal material on the same square, plus quality sacs, plus exchanges around either king. I do not use fractional depth extensions, since I have not seen great benefits from them.

The first time Chess Wizard played a real game of chess was in 1994. I worked a lot in 1994/1995/1996, and in 1996 it won the french championship with Chess Guru. I read a lot of publications, studied some source code (Turbo Chess in Turbo Pascal, GNU, later Crafty), tried a thousand ideas that did not work, found a few that really worked... I tried the bitboard approach very early (1995) because of the possibilities regarding evaluation. I always wanted Wizard to have a good evaluation, and a lot of complex things were easier to implement with bitboards. I learned some bitboard tricks from Crafty (in the 9.x to 10. versions I think) that I had not thought about before. But Chess Wizard is not entirely bitboard-based, it's more a hybrid approach. I have two problems : my opening book is not very good, and I don't seem to find a way to make forward pruning really work. I tried 6723 ideas, a few times I thought I had found the solution, but everytime it was a false impression. Maybe I am forward-pruning challenged. I use null move (R=4 very far, then R=3, then R=2), I recently removed all checks from the quiescence search. The strength of Chess Wizard is based on two things : good evaluation, and search extensions. I use many threat extensions with small increments (2/16 of a ply), strange out of checks extensions, and so on. I tried singular extensions too, but with bad results. When Wizard detects some patterns in the position, it simply tones down, and sometimes even shuts down completely, entire parts of the evaluation function to concentrate on the parameters that really counts (so other parameters don't get in the way). But I really would like to find super-efficient forward pruning techniques, like those used in the top commercial programs. For the moment, I compensate with extensions. Maybe it is not possible to do both. Maybe it is the same thing, from a certain point of view. But I have learned a few important things :

You must never dismiss some thing that doesn't work now. Maybe in a year from now, It will work. You must never assume that something that works in someone else program wil work in your program. Like Christophe Théron rightly says, you must believe in statistics. Your testing methodology must be extremely well thought out. If you hear someone say "this algorithm sucks", or "it doesn't work", don't forget to add "for me" to the sentence. You must try it for yourself.

Sometimes, you should completely leave the world of chess programming (even for one or two weeks). Some ideas have a way of being found only when you don't think about them !

		Chester, a private chess engine written by Steve Timson. Chester is a solid tactical program, applying singular extensions restricted to fairly near-root nodes disjoint from recapture extensions ^[1] . Inspired by comments Bruce Moreland made at CCT3, if a (significantly) reduced depth search of the moves at a node reveal that only one move produced a score near alpha and the rest are all worse, then extend it. Steve further worked on positional knowledge during the development and mentioned Chester does not have any special bad bishop code beyond mobility ^[2] . Chester played a strong CCT3 with 4½/8 and CCT4 with 6/11.

		Chexa, a private Chess Engine Communication Protocol compliant chess engine written by Mauro Riccardi in C ^[1]. Chexa played the CCC 2008 and CCC 2009 Italian Chess Computer Cups, the IOCSC 2010 and IOCSC 2012 Italian Open Chess Software Cups, the CCT15, and won the IGT 2013 of original engines. As stated on Chexa's G 6 site, beside working on a parallel search, Mauro is in the process to find the right balance of passed pawn and candidate values, since too often Chexa has overestimated their good locations, and is about to introduce a table to evaluate pawn islands ^[2].

		Cipollino, a private chess engine ^[1] by Giancarlo Delli Colli in dependence on the fictional character from Gianni Rodari's eponymous Tale of Cipollino also known under its 1957 renamed title The Adventures of the Little Onion ^[2], who fights the unjust treatment of his fellow vegetable townfolk by the fruit royalty. Cipollino played the CIPS 2007 with 5½/6 ^[3] ^[4], with hindsight zeroed on the G 6 tournament page ^[5]. Concerning engine originality of Olivier Deville's ChessWar tournaments, Cipollino was suspected as Fruit derivative by Christopher Conkie ^[6], and according to Olivier Deville first forfeited and later reinstated after Giancarlo Delli Colli provided Christopher Conkie with some source code for examination, and nothing suspicious has been found ^[7] ^[8] ^[9].

		Crashtest Dummy (CTD), a Chess Engine Communication Protocol and UCI compliant experimental chess engine by Richard Pijl, intended as a test bed for his primary engine The Baron. Richard started with CTD in about 2004, when he was getting nowhere with improving the Baron. When CTD was able to play a game, he decided to give the Baron one more look, instantly removed the bug that was blocking improvement and kept CTD in a drawer. At another point Richard was about to retire the Baron and to work only on CTD, as its successor ^[1]. Crashtest Dummy played the ICT 2007, the DOCCC 2007, and the CPT 2008, operated by Tessa Pijl.

Czolgista,
a private chess engine by Tomasz Kazimierski ^[1]. As mentioned by Grzegorz Sidorowicz ^[2], Czolgista exclusively uses Multi-Cut without rather than in conjunction with Null Move Pruning. Czolgista played the CCT5 and CCT7 CCT Online Tournaments in 2003 and 2005 respectively.

Deep Sjeng,
a private and former commercial chess engine by Gian-Carlo Pascutto, which emerged in 2002 from the 12.7 closed source branch of the chess variant and chess playing open source engine Sjeng ^[1] . Opposed to other commercial engines with the surename "deep" to indicate the version is able to play on multiple processors and sold for almost the double price than their "none deep" counterparts, Deep Sjeng, albeit able to play on multiple cores as well, is the native engine name for single as well as multiple processors.

Deep Sjeng was market since 2003 by Lex Loep's company Lokasoft ^[2] . It came with the ChessPartner graphical interface and supports UCI and the Chess Engine Communication Protocol. Version 2.X with the Mayura Chess Board ^[3] and its third incarnation Deep Sjeng 3.x were distributed via Gian-Carlo's own site, but Deep Sjeng is no longer for sale ^[4] .

Deep Sjeng played many computer chess tournaments. It participated (so far) at six World Computer Chess Championships ^[5] :

Deep Sjeng further played various Dutch Open Computer Chess Championships, International CSVN Tournaments, Livingston Chess960 Computer World Championships, dominated The Chess Programmers Tournament with three wins so far from four editions, and won the Italian IOCSC 2010. Online Deep Sjeng played multiple CCT Tournaments, where Deep Sjeng won the CCT12 in 2010 and CCT13 in 2011. Since 2008, Deep Sjeng participated the ACCA World Computer Rapid Chess Championship always with top rankings, winning the WCRCC 2012.

Parallel Search

Gian-Carlo Pascutto in a reply to Georg von Zimmermann on Deep Sjeng's parallel search ^[8] :

How is Deep Sjeng going? What did you use to understand the parallel algorithms you are using (which ones) ?

I started out with ABDADA (described in ICCA journal article and used in Amy), which got me a speedup of +- 1.2. I went on to try PVS (Crafty 15.0 and described in several articles about parallel search) which got me a speedup of 1.2-1.3.

1.3 wasn't enough, so I 'bit the bullent' and started looking at DTS (Cray Blitz). Unfortunately, DTS is both hideously complicated and requires a nonrecursive search and a p2p design. I spent some time working on a variant of DTS that can work with a recursive search function and a master-slave design and that is what I am using now. It still needs a lot of test work, but current results indicate a speedup of about 1.6.

Automated Learning

In 2007, Gian-Carlo's experimental program Stoofvlees aka Deep Sjeng 2.7 ^[9] with a set of feature recognizers coupled to a neural network ^[10], had its evaluation function entirely automatically learned from "watching" Grandmaster games. The results were incorporated into Deep Sjeng 3.0 ^[11]. The engine has noticeably improved in strength, particularly in the areas where it was less optimal before.

		Desperado, a private chess engine ^[1] by David Blackman, under development since 1989. It has a few extensions, heavy null move pruning, hashtables, a moderately complex evaluation function, and no opening book. Desperado has played in most of the NC3 tournaments, and all the ANU Carbon-Silicon Tournaments before that. Highlights include a win against IM Guy West the year he became Australian Champion, and two third places in NC3 ^[2].
A desperado is generally indiscreet ^[3]
