		AdaChess, an Italian chess engine released under the GPL license, written in Ada by Alessandro Iavicoli ^[1] . The development started in early 2012 and the first version has been released on January 21, 2013. Full compliant to the rules of chess, it also recognize draws by insufficient material. AdaChess is a console application without own GUI, but supports the Chess Engine Communication Protocol aka WinBoard/XBoard protocol. Latest version is tagged 2.0 and has been released in August 2014. AdaChess played the IGT 2014, IGT 2015, and IGT 2016 over the board.

		AICE, a free Chess Engine Communication Protocol and UCI compliant chess engine, written by Anastasios Milikas in C++ using the Standard Template Library, with Windows and Linux binaries available ^[1]. AICE is an Arena partner engine ^[2], and able to play Chess960, participated at the two open Livingston Chess960 Computer World Championships, the Chess960CWC 2005 and the Chess960CWC 2006.

Etymology

AICE stands for Artificially Intelligent Chess Engine, as explained by Anastasios, who also remarked "This is probably not a good name, since the engine is not intelligent! But I am working on it…” ^[4]. Anastasios initial intention with AICE was to use neural networks and genetic algorithms in order to optimize its evaluation weights, but he found that this was not productive and suitable for a chess evaluation function. They might be useful in time management, or controlling extentions or reductions ^[5].

Features

AICE is a bitboard based PV searcher with adaptive null move pruning in none PV-Nodes, using SEE, history- and killer heuristic to improve move ordering, and fractional extensions and non recursive reductions based on evaluation and history. In version 0.73, fail-high reductions were implemented in addition to null move pruning, but removed in in 0.97. Beside the transposition table and a smaller hash table for the quiescence search, AICE maintains a pawn hash table to cache once calculated pawn structure related data.

		Alice, an experimental open source chess engine under the GNU General Public License written by Sven Reichard in C++, compliant with the Chess Engine Communication Protocol. Alice is an object oriented program developed under GCC and Linux. The board is a vector of 64 pointers to pieces, while piece is an abstract class, with intermediate subclasses for common piece properties such as sliding versus none sliding pieces, and finally instantiable subclasses for the concrete pieces, like Pawn, Rook, etc., and "null pieces" for the empty squares ^[1]. Jim Ablett provides recent compiles for 32/64-bit Windows and Linux ^[2].

		Amundsen, (Jonte) a Chess Engine Communication Protocol compliant open source chess engine under the GNU General Public License, written in C by John Bergbom. Started as college course project at the Department of Numerical Analysis and Computing Science, Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm ^[1], a name change from Jonte to Amundsen took place between version 0.25 and 0.3, since the initial name was already used at FICS ^[2]. Amundsen was first released in May 2004, as announced by Dann Corbit in Winboard Forum ^[3]. Victory awaits him, who has everything in order. Luck we call it. Rotated Bitboards

Amundsen uses rotated bitboards with 1/2 MiB lookup tables, indexed by 8-bit line occupancy, to determine sliding piece attacks, ignoring the possible fourfold reduction excluding the redundant outer squares.

BitScan & PopCount

The memory bacchanal is attended by population count, bitscan forward and reverse with three 16-bit indexed, 64K lookup tables of double word integers, which is another 3/4 MiB ^[6].

Search

The search is PVS alpha-beta with transposition and refutation table inside an iterative deepening framework with aspiration windows, further using AEL-pruning à la Heinz, as well as LMR and IID in case of a missing hash move at PV-nodes. Checks, pawn moves to the 7th rank, and mate threatening moves are extended, killer- and history heuristic help to order moves, and a SEE swap routine is used to determine winning captures.

Evaluation

Amundsen's evaluation with a pawn structure cache features piece-square tables, and further considers mobility, passed pawns and hidden passed pawns, king safety through king piece tropism, and various features and defects such as outposts, rook on open file, seventh rank and behind passers, and bad bishop to name a few, and knows to trade pieces when ahead, but pawns when behind.

		Amy, a Chess Engine Communication Protocol aka XBoard compliant open source chess program under the GNU General Public License by Thorsten Greiner, written in C. Its development already started in 1993 on the Amiga ^[1], and continued on UNIX platforms, in particular FreeBSD ^[2]. Amy 0,6 was ported to Windows for Winboard by Dann Corbit in early 2000 ^[3]. Amy applies ABDADA ^[4] inside a NegaScout framework ^[5] as parallel search algorithm, further using fractional ply extensions aka the SEX Algorithm , Null Move Pruning, and Extended Futility Pruning . Amy played the WMCCC 1995 in Paderborn and various International Paderborn Computer Chess Championships.

Arasan's development started in the early 90s, the first version, released in 1994 was a 16-bit program running under Windows 3.1 using an 8x8 Board, incremental updated attack tables and its own GUI, evolving to a portable 32-bit and later 64-bit program, utilizing bitboards to determine its sliding piece attacks with rotated bitboard lookups. In 2008, rotated were replaced by Magic bitboards, which gave Arasan about a 20-25% speedup ^[1]. Despite its own GUI, Arasan early supported the Chess Engine Communication Protocol and later UCI as well, to run under Windows, Linux and Mac OS ^[2]. The latest version of Arasan and all major versions, including Version 1.0 from March 1994, are available as source code from the Arasan.org site ^[3] . Jon's change logs, bug fix reports and tournament reports over the time are available from forum archives, as well the recent ones from the Arasan blog ^[4]

Bitboard Trials

Lately I've been working on a new major release of Arasan. I have spent the last few months working on the search engine, trying to improve speed and performance. I tried some experiments with a bitboard move representation, but I have backed off on that for now.

With bitboards, I got a nice reduction in tree size (bitboards allow a more accurate swap-down analysis than I had before, and this improves move ordering and allows better "culling" of losing captures in the quiescence search).

However, currently the program relies pretty heavily on incrementally generated attack information, and I didn't have that implemented to work with bitboards, so I had to compute attacks as needed. Unfortunately, the current program "needs" to do this much more often than Crafty does, so the loss from computing attacks more than balanced out the gains from bitboards. This is fixable, I'm sure, but I've put off further work on it for now.

Magic Bitboards

The main change has been to re-work the code to use "magic" bitboard logic instead of rotated bitboards. This has given about a 20-25% speedup. I have also had to re-write the evaluation function to take advantage of bitboard attack functions for king safety and mobility.

PEXT/PDEP Bitboards

Arasan 20.3, released in November 2017, performs PEXT/PDEP Bitboards if compiled for the BMI2 instruction set ^[9] to replace Fancy Magic Bitboards in looking up sliding piece attacks ^[10]

Automated Tuning

Arasan 19.2, released in November 2016, now applies Texel's Tuning Method by default and supports the Adam gradient descent algorithm ^[11] ^[12].

Tournament Play

Arasan went online in December, 1996 ^[13] , and played almost all major online computer chess tournaments, such as CCT Tournaments, ACCA Americas' Computer Chess Championship, ACCA World Computer Rapid Chess Championship, TCEC, and International Gsei Web Tournaments. Arasan 15.1 ^[14] won the ACCA 2012 ^[15] , Arasan 16.0 the WCRCC 2013 ^[16] . Over the board, Arasan is active at the CSVN Programmers Tournaments operated by Tessa Pijl. Arasan was runner-up behind The Baron in May 2014 at the PT 46 one point behind, as well in June 2015 at the PT 48 with the same score according to the tiebreak rules ^[17].

BBChess,
a free open source engine licensed under the GNU General Public License, written in ANSI C by Borko Bošković starting in 2005. BBChess is Chess Engine Communication Protocol compatible and can be compiled for Linux and Windows. It performs a parallel search using threads, PVS, and determines sliding piece attacks with magic bitboards.

Differential Evolution

BBChess' was further object of research in genetic programming at Computer Architecture and Languages Laboratory ^[1], Institute of Computer Science ^[2] at University of Maribor, its evaluation was tuned by Differential Evolution (DE), also topic of Bošković's Ph.D. thesis ^[3] ^[4]:

The DE algorithm employs mutation and cross-over operations to generate new individuals and selection operation to select individuals that will survive into next generation. Before selection operation is employed, individuals have to be evaluated. In our case individuals are evaluated according to the games they have played. Therefore individuals play a specific number of games in each generation and individuals with greater efficiency survive into the next generation...

With the proposed tuning approach, we tuned the chess evaluation function of BBChess chess program. Tuning was done with and without expert knowledge. When we tuned the parameters without expert knowledge, because the search space was huge, we tuned only a few parameters. After 500 generations of the evolutionary process, the value of parameters convergence to the values that relationship were approximately equal as known from the chess theory. When we tuned the parameter values with expert knowledge, the tuning intervals of parameter values were set around the approximate values and the number of tuned parameters was 190. The obtained results show that, our approach was successful.

Belofte,
a chess engine written in C by Yves De Billoëz and released under the GPL license v2. Belofte is a console application, but supports the Chess Engine Communication Protocol aka WinBoard/XBoard protocol.

Features

The engine supports Winboard v1 and v2 protocol alongside the Belofte protocol. The engine also supports EPD test sets and can be run with initialization files. Games are saved in PGN format. PGN files can be converted into an opening book. Internally, Belofte keeps a two-dimensional 8x8 board performing pure negamax alpha-beta so far with a once estimated depth rather than iterative deepening ^[1].

History

Development started in 2005 and version 0.2.x made appearance on freechess.org chess server and in source code. At that time, it was released with a custom license (but still free for the open source community). Versions 0.3 till 0.6 were converted to C++ and developed under windows but compilation on other platforms failed. Source code for those versions is available. Look for the branch in the source repository. In 2017, the old version was re-released under GPL license and a new version 0.9.x is making its appearance. It is a branch from the 0.2 release and gradually, all changes from the 0.3+ branches will be included.

Rating

The engine performs currently at 1000-1200 Elo. In some tournaments, it achieved around 1500 ELO.

		Beowulf, a Chess Engine Communication Protocol compatible open source engine, the game-playing brains behind the ChessBrain project, a distributed computing project similar to SETI@home, that aims to harness the collective calculating power of individual computers over the internet to play a game of chess ^[1] . 		Betsabe II, (Betsabe, Betsabé II) a Chess Engine Communication Protocol compliant open source chess engine under the GPL written by Juan Benitez in C, able to run under Windows, Linux, Mac OS and Android platforms. Betsabe II is successor of Betsabe, which already played various Spanish Computer Chess Championships in the 90s, notably the SCCC 1993 where it became first Spanish Champion with a 100% score, and the SCCC 1994 as runner-up behind Zeus II. Betsabe was initially based on Dieter Steinwender and Chrilly Donninger's program Minimax ^[1], but differences in search and evaluation are substantial.

Search

Betsabe II applies PVS with transposition table inside an iterative deepening fractional ply framework in conjunction with mate distance pruning, IID, adaptive null move pruning, LMR, razoring, futility pruning, SEE pruning in quiescence, and check- and capture extensions with transitions to pawn endings. Move ordering is enhanced by history- and killer heuristic with two ordinary killer moves and one mate killer per ply.

Evaluation

The evaluation might be lazy using material and piece-square tables with respect to bounds, and otherwise considers mobility, pawn structure, king safety and various piece terms.

		Blikskottel, a Chess Engine Communication Protocol compatible chess engine written (in an extremely part-time fashion) in C by Adam Oellermann. Blikskottel is an Afrikaans slang term (meaning something like 'blighter' or 'rascal'), but Blikskottel's development began in England, and Blikskottel is now resident in Scotland.

Description

Blikskottel is a simple bitboard-based alpha-beta searcher. The original version was written in Delphi, intended to be an entry into a chess programming competition among a group of programmers. After the other programmers failed to produce entries, Adam decided to continue anyway. The Delphi version was quickly replaced with C code (originally developed in Microsoft Visual C++, but since being ported to Linux just about anything can compile Blikskottel now); much of this was written while on the train or watching TV, which perhaps accounts somewhat for the engine's lack of performance. Blikskottel's strength tends to make sudden jumps forward during brief spurts of intense interest in chess programming by the author, which then fade away as he realises just how awful the codebase is getting to be to work with; then, poor Blikskottel languishes - sometimes for years at a time.

There's a TODO list in the Blikskottel source code which is full of interesting ideas. Perhaps one day Blikskottel may be able to advance into the realms of the mediocre! Blikskottel plays as 'skottel' on FICS, from time to time. The 0.8 version maintains a FICS Elo rating of about 2000.

Brainless,
a Chess Engine Communication Protocol compliant open source chess engine under the GNU General Public License, written in C++ by Matthew Lai and Wieland Belka with contributions from Pawel Koziol. Brainless started as project from Matthew 's high school years and has been abandoned in about 2008, when German chess master Wieland Belka and Pawel Koziol contributed to the evaluation to play the First Italian Open Chess Software Cup, 2010 in Carugate. It plays on FICS under the handle BrainlessChess(C) ^[1]. The opening book is converted from Beowulf.

Board Representation

Brainless is a bitboard engine and uses rotated bitboards indexed by 6-bit line occupancy to determine sliding piece attacks, and uses the GCC builtins trailing zero count and population count ^[4] for bitboard serialization and mobility.

Search

The search is PVS alpha-beta with transposition table inside an iterative deepening framework with aspiration windows. Selectivity is applied by adaptive null move pruning (R=2 + depth >= 7), LMR, IID and check extensions, the quiescence search considers captures and promotions only. Along with the killer heuristic, static exchange evaluation improves move ordering, and also prunes bad captures near the tips.

Evaluation

The evaluation function, written by Wieland Belka, with contributions from Pawel Koziol, consists mainly of material, piece-square tables, cached pawn structure, king safety and various evaluation patterns.

		Butcher (Rzeźnik in Polish ^[1] ) a Chess Engine Communication Protocol compliant chess program written by Marek Kołacz in C, released in September 2001 ^[2] . Executables are available for MS-DOS, Windows and Linux. Since version 1.60, Butcher is able to perform a parallel search under Windows using processes and a shared hash table. A master process spawns worker processes, which run independently without any supervision. The Master process prepares all the structures necessary to split the node and continues the search. Worker processes simply use existing "split nodes" to start their search and report the results. The master process is responsible to kill the workers upon exit ^[3] .

Tournament Play

Rzeźnik aka Butcher played all Polish Computer Chess Championships, and won its first edition, the PCCC 2002, and the open category of the PCCC 2004 and PCCC 2006 ^[5] , and otherwise was always a top scorer, at the PCCC 2012 best Polish program. Butcher further played multiple CCT Tournaments, and had its tournament debut at the CCT3 in May 2001.

		Buzz, a Chess Engine Communication Protocol compliant chess engine written by Pradu Kannan in C++. An early version is available as open source engine under the GPL ^[1], intended to be an example program for new chess programmers. Buzz is a bitboard engine and applies Pradu Kannan's main stream implementation of Magic Bitboards with individual table sizes for each square, later dubbed Fancy Magic Bitboards, the generator is available as open source from the Buzz site. Buzz got a 2.2 x speedup from 32-bits to 64-bits on Core2 ^[2]. It uses a kind of principal variation search, dubbed Node-Type Search (NTS), explicitly considering node types ^[3], and utilizes multiple threads for a parallel search. In collaboration with Andres Valverde and Fonzy Bluemers, Buzz' search was incorporated into the team effort Dirty.

		Cassandre, an Chess Engine Communication Protocol and UCI compliant open source chess engine under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL), written in C++ by Raphael Grundrich, Thomas Adolph and Jean-Francois Romang, first released in March 2003. Cassandre started as a student project at Louis Pasteur University, Strasbourg ^[1]. It is based on bitboards, in particular Rotated bitboards with 256 occupancy states to determine sliding piece attacks, bitscan aka first- and last one by conditional 16-bit lookups, and population count by eight byte lookups credited to Dann Corbit, and uses the alpha-beta algorithm ^[2].

		Chenard, an open source chess program by Don Cross written in C++. Its development already started in 1993, and it is maintained and improved until the present. The source code of the didactic program is well structured and documented, is in the public domain with attribution of author's name and web address required in distributed works ^[1]. A Windows version comes with an own GUI, other versions for Windows and Linux support the Chess Engine Communication Protocol aka WinBoard or XBoard, its own native command line interface, or more recently, teletype chess.

Description

Chenard provides a genetic algorithm framework for evolving move ordering and evaluation heuristics. The board is represented by a 12x12 mailbox with disjoint piece flag encoding. Since Chenard isn't negamaxing, search, evaluation as well as move generation routines are implemented separately for White and Black.

Search

Chenard's search is pure alpha-beta with transpostion table, despite quiescence search and its top layer with checks, without any selectivity in form of extensions, forward pruning and reductions. The root search implements iterative deepening without aspiration windows. The depth parameter, suited to index a ply stack, starts at the root with zero and is incremented through the indirect recursive function calls until the the maximum depth, dubbed level, is reached and quiescence is called ^[3].

Evaluation

The evaluation looks sophisticated considering a bunch of features, many part of Chenard's genes. Beside the aggregation of material, imbalance terms and piece-square tables, which decides on an early exit aka lazy evaluation, Chenard looks at immobile and connected pieces, along with various piece specific evaluation features, and further takes pawn structure with focus on passed pawns, king safety, and even tactical motives such as pinned pieces and forks into account. Beside, Chenard has a mop-up evaluation for late endgames like KBNK.

Chenard has its own 4 man depth to mate endgame databases, generator and probing code ^[4]. The file endgame.zip contains KQKR, KQKB, KQKN, KPKN, KPKB ^[5].

Chesley,
an open source chess engine by Matt Gingell under the GNU Public License, written in C++ and supporting both Windows and POSIX. Chesley is compatible with the Chess Engine Communication Protocol. It takes its name from Chesley B. “Sully” Sullenberger, the pilot who successfully landed a airplane on the Hudson river around the time Matt was getting started ^[1]. Chessley is a bitboard program, and applies rotated bitboards not using the outer square optimization for a fourfold table reduction ^[2]. Matt made experiments with the Score data type in Chesley, and replaced 32-bit integer by Float, taking the same space ^[3].

		Chess for Android, written by Aart Bik, is a standalone chess application for Android. The application is available for free at the Android Market ^[1] or as direct download ^[2] and consists of a chess engine (a Java version derived from the UCI engine BikJump that is written in C++) and a GUI. The application accepts moves through the touchscreen, the trackball, or through the keyboard (e2e4 pushes the king pawn, e1g1 castles king side, etc.). An optional "move coach" highlights valid user moves during input and last played engine move. Full game navigation buttons enable users to correct mistakes or analyze games. Games import and export as FEN/PGN to and from the clipboard, load and save as file, are set up through a position editor, or import as application/x-chess-pgn MIME type on startup. A draw by stalemate, insufficient material, the fifty move rule, or threefold repetition is recognized. The engine plays at various levels (including random, against itself in auto-play, or free-play, where the game can be used as a "magnetic chessboard"). The user can play either side and, independently, view the board from the perspective of white or black. The application also supports the Universal Chess Interface (UCI) and Chess Engine Communication Protocol (often simply called WinBoard or XBoard protocol), which allows users to play against more powerful third party engines or even play tournaments between engines. Engine setup features pondering, infinite analysis, hash tables, multiple threads, endgame tablebases (Nalimov , Gaviota, Scorpio, Robbobases), and opening test suites. Chess for Android recognizes all ChessBase compatible engines that are installed on the same device. Since version 5.6 released in February 2018 ^[3], Chess for Android supports the electronic chess board of the Millennium ChessGenius ^[4].

chess4j,
an open source chess engine written by James Swafford using Java based technologies and the Chess Engine Communication Protocol, released under the MIT License, and first published in September 2012 ^[1]. The engine was hosted on SourceForge, and meant to be a test bed for various interests, including experimenting with different JVM based languages, parallel and distributed programming techniques, and machine learning. Since version 3.2 released in March 2017, chess4j became a bitboard engine, using magic bitboards to generate moves ^[2], now hosted on GitHub.
